Trump confirms he will not attend Super Bowl because of music acts: ‘I’m anti-them’ | Both Bad Bunny and Green Day have been outspoken critics of Trump

https://www.independent.co.uk/politics/trump-not-attending-super-bowl-bad-bunny-green-day-b2906989.html

The NFL’s decision to feature Latin artist Bad Bunny at halftime has already sparked controversy in some conservative circles, with critics arguing that his predominantly Spanish-language music and stances on issues such as immigration make him an unconventional pick for the game’s massive audience.

His 2025 song “Nuevayol” features an imitated Trump voice saying, “I want to apologize to the immigrants in America. . . . This country is nothing without the immigrants. This country is nothing without Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Cubans.”

Green Day, which formed in the East Bay Area in the 1980s, is set to perform during the game’s opening ceremony. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has long denounced the administration and has altered the lyrics of the band’s 2004 Grammy-nominated song “American Idiot” during live performances, changing the line “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda.”

In July, Armstrong led a Download Festival crowd in a chant calling Trump a “fat bastard.”

And you’ll get booed in live TV?

Maybe worse?

humanamerican@lemmy.zip · 87 pts · 225d (5 replies)

This is the real reason.

CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 28 pts · 225d (4 replies)

Yup. He's likely not to get lots of adulation from conservatives that clap like seals whenever he mumbles out stupid shit like happens at his stupid road shows.

SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 225d (3 replies)

There's a reason he doesn't do them anymore. Either he's too sick, or there's just not enough interest, even from his most bigly followers.

phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 224d

Also he doesn't like his dumb-ass followers, so it doesn't give him the buzz he craves.

CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 224d (1 reply)

I think you are right. It's probably a bit of both.

I know he just ate that up like it was manna, since he's a narcissist.

I think everything would have been so much better for everybody if he could have just kept his circus roadshow as a regular thing, stayed away from any office, and he could have had all the adulation he wanted without any of the stress of even pretending to work a real job.

He could even expand the thing with some warm-up acts to really give the fans a thrill - get some snake handlers in there to go on about the miracles of Jesus. I'm sure some bible bangers would love to get in on that grift, if they weren't already - I don't really know since I wouldn't get anywhere near one of his stupid rallies. I'm picturing some real Righteous Gemstones type of stuff, LOL...

Oh, I guess people selling nostrums like ivermectin and the wonders of HCQ....as long as Taco is the closing act and gets a cut of the opening acts, I'm sure there'd be enough to keep everyone fat, dumb and happy.

Even with how mad MAGA supposedly is, I betcha $10 this will be the most popular Super Bowl of the decade. I think the internet and news media vastly overestimate MAGA's influence on the daily lives of every American. I live in a big red county in a rural area and lemme tell ya, basically nobody gives a shit about 70% of what the internet and the news says they do. I'm not saying they are saints, I'm just saying that when you see "MAGA angry at [blank]" most of the time it's literally just, like, a Reddit post, a few tweets, or some right wing podcaster.

HamFistedVegan@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 225d (2 replies)

I think the internet and news media vastly overestimate MAGA's influence on the daily lives of every American.

I'm not saying it's right but it seems to be the only logical explanation for everything.

How else do you look at what's going on and explain that 49% of Americans voted for this?

That's a genuine question. I'm not being facetious.

TommySoda@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 225d (1 reply)

49% of Americans didn't vote for this. 49% of those that voted in 2024 technically voted for this whether they were aware or not. Only about 62% of the population voted in 2024 so including those that voted third party, realistically only about 20% - 30% voted for this. And that doesn't include those that voted based on things like affordability without realizing the choice they were actually making. Add those that regret their vote and you have a very small percentage of people that actually voted for this specific outcome. Sure you can look at polls but those only account for people that were interested in participating in polls, which MAGA loves to be vocal about their opinion.

In my opinion, they are trying to make us feel isolated and alone when in fact we are literally surrounded by people that are on your side. They'll say "you voted for this" in the same way an abuser says "you did this to yourself."

Edit: Spelling

HamFistedVegan@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 225d

I see. I had that figure incorrect then. I apologise.

I hope you are right in the fact that most people see what ICE are doing as truly awful. I struggle to see how you could look at it and not think that.

If 30 odd percent support what is going on then by all accounts Trump should lose drastically in the mid-terms.

Whether he does or he doesn't will be very interesting, to say the least.

sturmblast@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 223d (2 replies)

There's nothing based about it they're big artists with big money

rumba@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 223d

if you take into account the NFL itself, how much money they're making/spending, the cost for a commerical during the show, the cost to watch it on tv, the price of tickets and how capitalisticly crazy the whole thing is...

I think green day is probably the most based part of the whole equation :)

I'd still rather see another Kendrick halktime show though. Or maybe a RATM show....they could get together for one more show right?

jve@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 223d

There’s lots of big artists with big money out there.

These two are surprisingly outspoken against the US government.

Idk how political Bad Bunny gets on stage, but he cancelled a bunch of shows because of ICE, and said as much. Green Day has whole albums dedicated to calling out politicians.

They’re gonna make buckets of money either way, this way puts them in the line of fire politically in a way they didn’t need to do. That’s at least a little based.

From all the way back when we thought Dubya was as bad as it could get:

Don't wanna be an American idiot

Don't want a nation under the new media

And can you hear the sound of hysteria?

The subliminal mind fuck America

Welcome to a new kind of tension

All across the alienation

Where everything isn't meant to be okay

Television dreams of tomorrow

We're not the ones who're meant to follow

For that's enough to argue

Well maybe I'm the removed America

I'm not a part of a redneck agenda

Now everybody do the propaganda

And sing along to the age of paranoia

Welcome to a new kind of tension

All across the alienation

Where everything isn't meant to be okay

Television dreams of tomorrow

We're not the ones who're meant to follow

For that's enough to argue

Yeah, he's totally saying alienation.

Totally.

Not Aryan nation.

... Yep. Its an ... angsty song, not a protest song.

Mhm.

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 8 pts · 225d (1 reply)

So when he says 'maybe I'm the removed'... he is literally just saying he's gay or bi, yes, and, what about it?

He's taking the word back.

And also, they replaced 'redneck' with MAGA.

Not sure if you actually know too many queer people who were 90s kids, but it was and still is pretty common for them to jokingly, ironically mock themselves or their friends using that term you seem to think is only ever a slur.

Maybe I'm old and out of touch at this point, but as a bi 90s kid, I'm qualified to at least explain how the terminology worked back in 04 when this song came out.

EDIT:

There was no need to delete your comment.

People can sometimes say things that are slightly innacurate, and then... learn, grow.

That, doing that is ... much better than trying to be 100% correct 100% of the time.

That is impossible.

... you can just say "Oh, I didn't know that / think of it that way."

No harm done!

Furbag@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 224d

Okay, I deleted my comment not just because I didn't want people to upvote the misinformation, but also because I knew if I started typing out an edit or a reply that I would get upset and say more than I should. But since you're now twisting the knife, I'll oblige, since it's entirely unavoidable at this point.

First, you are absolutely correct about the lyrics. I made a mistake. Happy?

Second, do not presume to know anything about me:

Not sure if you actually know too many queer people who were 90s kids

Well, I know me, for one. Now I know you too.

you seem to think is only ever a slur.

Did I say that? I self-censored not because I believe that the word should be unspeakable, but because I don't want to be banned from Lemmy for typing it out. It's explicitly against the rules of /c/politics.

To be clear, I don't really care if people use it, as an insult or otherwise - that's their business and not mine. But platforms most certainly do. To add on to that, my preferences are not shared by all. I know it makes some people uncomfortable to read it, which is why I try to avoid it when I can. We've all definitely matured past the people that we were in the 90's. I'm not going to regress just for contextual purposes.

vantablack@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 223d

technically in the lyric booklet for the album it's written as

"alienation"

with the "nation" part bolded as if also saying "alien nation" in addition to "alienation"
