Some asshole going around his school filming and announcing "I support ICE!". He passes this guy who responds "I'm gonna punch you", the filmer says "you'll get in trouble", to which the guy pictured replies "okay" and starts swinging

Law enforcement requires fascism and power.

They have to be careful to a degree, since the government isn't allowed to stifle free speech on government property. If they told him he wasn't allowed to they would open themselves up to a lawsuit.

CubitOom@infosec.pub · 18 pts · 199d (7 replies)

US law enforcement subpoenas data centers and servers often. For a physical server, the FBI will leave a windows sever running and gain access, if it is a Linux sever however, they will to confiscate the server. I'm not sure what they do for cloud hosted servers.

LibertyLizard@quokk.au · 26 pts · 199d (6 replies)

All the more reason to be on a non-US based server right now.

Worth noting that a lot of their subpoenas are BS though and could be fought successfully. Big tech is too scared to do even minor things to protect their users because the regime will retaliate in other ways that could cost them money. Small hobby servers don't have the same avenue of attack, although they might be more vulnerable in other ways.

saplyng@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 198d

This. I work for a tech company that unfortunately gets quite a few subpoenas, from little police departments to the letter agencies, and I have pushed back on subpoenas and warrants that I felt infringed on peoples rights and "negotiated down" the scope of them. If a company isn't willing to try and keep their users out of the legal crossfire they're cowards.

0x0@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 198d (3 replies)

A server in .au is still part of the 5 eyes, so...

LibertyLizard@quokk.au · 3 pts · 198d (2 replies)

True... I guess I'm not too knowledgeable about the situation in Australia. How would the US approach them and what legal avenues for resistance exist?

They're not a fascist government but they also don't seem to have the same free speech protections the US does. Not that that has helped us much,

LibertyLizard@quokk.au · 2 pts · 198d

Spying is a bit different from being compelled to share data though. Probably everyone is vulnerable to secret surveillance, I'm not sure how to mitigate against that. But the information from such efforts will be more limited.

DaddleDew@lemmy.world · 92 pts · 199d (37 replies)

WTF are all US schools like that? With all that security it looks like it was filmed in an airport

Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 75 pts · 199d (19 replies)

Because we have school shootings all the damn time. It still won't stop them from happening but it's not like we're gonna go after the source of the problem and ban guns anytime soon. Security theater is the best thing administrations can do and the kids are those who end up suffering the most out of it.

CubitOom@infosec.pub · 73 pts · 199d (4 replies)

Zaktor@sopuli.xyz · 33 pts · 199d (11 replies)

And we can't go after the guns because patriots are going to use them in case the government ever starts doing tyrannical things like grabbing people off the streets without due process, killing protesters, breaking into houses without warrants, or threatening the voting system.

If any of that happens sometime in the future the good ol' boys will be ready to protect the Constitution and we'll understand that all the dead kids were worth it.

9bananas@feddit.org · 9 pts · 198d (7 replies)

that was super obviously sarcastic...

ToTheGraveMyLove@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 198d (6 replies)

So they're saying we should go after guns because patriots aren't doing that, which is why I called them a troll, because they're wrong. Patriots are doing that.

9bananas@feddit.org · 7 pts · 198d (5 replies)

they were saying that the "patriots" (so maga, not actual patriots) are claiming that they would step in and stop tyranny, but are actually doing the opposite.

and them claiming that that's the reason they need their guns is the most prominent reason that constantly comes up in discussions about gun control. which is true.

so they are saying that particular argument is utter bullshit, and that gun reform should disregard that argument.

and gun reform/gun control doesn't mean nobody can have guns.

it just means stricter rules on who can have them. which, yes, is a necessary legislation that every civilized country already has.

ToTheGraveMyLove@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 198d

And I'm saying that's all bullshit, because actual patriots (not maga) ARE stepping up and using the second amendment for what it was made for. Anyone talking gun control right now is a fucking fascist masquerading as a liberal because they're scared that people are arming themselves to protect their neighborhoods.

dylanmorgan@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 199d

School Resource Officers became common before Columbine, starting in black schools in the 1980s. (It’s America, did you think this history wouldn’t be racist as hell?)

Cory Doctorow has pointed out that if you want to see what is planned for white middle income people, look at how prisoners are treated; the same thing can be said about schools in poor neighborhoods. Now having cops handle disciplinary issues at schools is just the standard.

ToTheGraveMyLove@sh.itjust.works · -4 pts · 199d

Granted it's been a bit since I've been in highschool but mine didn't remotely have that level of security. We had a rent-a-cop show up maybe twice a week who did breathalyzer tests as people came into the school. There were two entrances though so people just went to whichever one they weren't at. They also tried having a drug dog come in every so often but we revolted and all the students started putting open bags of poppy seeds and dog treats in our lockers so that didn't last long lol

How would you have a robust school to prison pipeline if you don't have plenty of cops at the schools?

hellure@lemmy.org · 9 pts · 199d

It was right at the main door, and they had a active student protest in that entrance space that was being policed for everyone's security. So the reg security and a couple cops and staff were literally right there to get involved.

FYI, the protest was being allowed by the school.

IratePirate@feddit.org · 7 pts · 198d

Well, if it weren't for the school shootings, I wouldn't know if the U.S. still had schools.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 199d

What I read was that the cops were there because there was supposed to be some sort of anti-ICE protest, and this moron shows up to support ICE because apparently he's the Stephen "PeeWee Himmler" Miller troublemaker of his school. djdarren@piefed.social · 18 pts · 198d (3 replies)

The WORST kind of shithead is the one who does shitty things because they're technically legal.

The kid in the original video didn't need to walk around school 'protesting' his support of the status quo. He didn't need to act like he was some kind of fucking minority. Then as soon as his actions met any kind of negative (to him) repercussions he was all like "THAT'S ILLEGAL".

And I don't wish pain or injury on him. I just wish him to fuck off. I nothing him. I wish him a future where he can look back upon this episode with shame that he was such a piece of shit at this stage in his life.

But he won't.

The usual shitehawks and grifters will champion him for their own gain, they'll inflate him and make him feel important, and at worst he'll end up becoming a figurehead for the oppressed, silent, majority. A silent majority who I wish would shut the fuck up once in a while.

Everyone should believe in constitutional/human rights. That's not a partisan position, that's a human position.

The monsters posing as humans to push any agenda that would rob humans of their rights, should not be considered neither "left" nor "right". Many of them are simply aggressive capitalists that value profits more than human lives. There are exceptions to this.

Supporting violence is clearly different than violence... You really are doing some fancy mental gymnastics. If only you had the mental capacity to not be shit.

The only reason people get away with violence, is because someone is supporting it. If you enable it. You're just as culpable. "I didn't deport this baby, I just support the people who did, how about we find common ground..."

https://www.commondreams.org/news/ice-deports-juan-nicolas

Pick a side here and stop being a coward. You're with the fascists or you're not. There is no fucking common ground with ice. That spineless middle-ground "I want them to deport babies but I also want to sleep at night" bullshit of yours, it says more than enough about the person you are.

Punch the Nazis! Make them feel unwelcome. There is no place for racism and hate.
