NYC EMS story.

Cab driver gets in a fender bender with a 911 ambulance.

After arguing with the crew and supervisor he decides he has neck and back pain and he must go to the hospital.

A second ambulance is dispatched and, following protocol, fully immobilizes him and takes him to the hospital.

En route the cabbie complains about how slow the ambulance is going.

"Everyone else is like you, none of them get out of the way."

TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 63 pts · 169d (25 replies)

Kinda misleading. This dude is a comedian and "influencer" (not really in the typical sense but he films a lotta stuff for online content). He cuts filming just as people are moving out of the way for the ambulance.

I ain't saying NYC doesn't have a problem with what he's saying, but I am saying you can see how he's not being entirely honest and he's incentivized to be dishonest.

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de · 91 pts · 169d (15 replies)

No amount of dishonesty can invalidate the fact that in a typical german city that ambulance would be going literally 10 times as fast without any issues. Its not just stupid drivers, but NYC is also just a complete failure in terms of road design.

Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 168d (5 replies)

NYC is thrice as dense as Berlin, the densest city in Germany. Probably accounts for something.

Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de · 19 pts · 168d (2 replies)

It really doesn't, because in Germany cars always move out of the way. Even if the street is completely full of cars waiting at a red light for example.

rapchee@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 168d (1 reply)

tbf it's because there is room for them or the ambulance to move to, like a bus lane, a bicycle path etc, but that's not acceptable in many places

Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de · 9 pts · 168d

No, that's my point. In the video there is much more room to move than what I mean, with two lanes it mostly suffices to just move the car to either edge of the road.

Anivia@feddit.org · 5 pts · 167d (1 reply)

Berlin is the capital of Germany, but NOT the densest city of Germany

Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 167d

Oh my mistake, you're right. Was rushing a bit, haste makes waste and all that.

Alwaysnownevernotme@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 168d (8 replies)

Well it wasn't leveled 80 years ago.

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de · 22 pts · 168d (6 replies)

Its not that deep. They just need to remove 2 of the three car lanes, replace em with a bike and a bus lane and the problems is solved.

Alwaysnownevernotme@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 168d (5 replies)

I would love to hear someone propose that at a city council.

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de · 13 pts · 168d (4 replies)

Im sure that has happened, but the car lobby has the money and money is literally the only deciding factor in US politics.

Alwaysnownevernotme@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 168d (3 replies)

The idea of a car lobbyist sitting in on a fucking city council meeting.

You guys are like gnomes the way you talk about America.

No the car lobby doesn't have to do anything, our own goddamn reactionaries will immediately squeal "They gonna make traffic WORSE!" despite the fact that I find our single lane freeways more efficient here because The option to choose what fucking lane they are in allows these people to make more mistakes and force more 'brake waves'.

pdqcp@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 168d

That's the direct result of car lobbying, it has changed the perception of a whole generation on how we should build cities

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 168d

If you genuinely believe that there are no car and oil lobbyists in local politics, especially in a city as big and famous as NYC then you are completely out of touch with reality. Yes thats not the entire reason for why its like this but it definitely helps buying of politicians.

Miaou@jlai.lu · 1 pts · 168d

American cities indeed are, after all, pedestrian oriented

Rothe@piefed.social · 17 pts · 169d

Even if they did eventually move out of the way, it would still be way slower than what happens in Germany (and many other European countries). Cars would begin to move out of the way as soon as they notice it approaching.

UnspecificGravity@piefed.social · 13 pts · 169d (2 replies)

I mean, there are about a thousand people that can coroborate the fact that people block ambulances in NYC all the time.

You do realize you’ve proved his point? In Europe there’d be no “just as they are moving”, the cars would have already moved by the time the ambulance reached them.

MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 42 pts · 169d (7 replies)

I've never been to New York, but as somebody born and raised in Southern California, lived in Portland, Or, and is currently living in Minnesota, I have never seen this. You always move over to the right. Immediately and without question. In California, Oregon, and Minnesota, at least, it's the law, and you can be fined for not complying.

David_Eight@lemmy.world · 43 pts · 169d (1 reply)

I live right outside NYC and have to drive through on a semi-regular basis. People generally do move out of the way of emergency vehicles. BUUUTTTT, traffic is completely fucked in NYC. Watch the video again, cars are trying to move but literally have nowhere to go. This happens daily, if you're not out off Manhattan by 3pm your travel time is now at minimum doubled on an average day. Some days its 3-4x worse.

Daemnyz@lemmy.ml · 9 pts · 168d

I think the difference in Germany is that you are required by law to make space beforehand. When you are in a traffic jam on the Autobahn, there are rules for how to make a "Rettungsgasse" (rescue alley). A few years ago they bumped the penalty up to 320€ and suspend your drivers licence for a month. This penalty isn't only applied when you actually hinder an ambulance or the like, but when your actions could affect them in theory. I love that.

nandeEbisu@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 168d

As an NYC resident, cars will move over if there's space, but there's so much congestion that you physically can't move, there's no shoulder or anything.

And there's also idiots who are fighting congestion pricing that helps with these kinds of problems by reducing the number of cars on the road. You can't widen these roads without getting rid of sidewalks which just means even more cars and traffic so the only option is reduce the number of cars.

SethW@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 168d (3 replies)

the right lane cars move to the right the left lane cars move to the left the ambulance goes down the middle, its interesting your brain only imagines moving right but not process the goal of creating a path

MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 168d (1 reply)

My brain can imagine the process of creating a path, wtf, that's literally what I'm talking about. Just moving over to the right is what is written in the law in most places. Chill.

Another reason I don't like this idea of this dude being used as any source of information, I find his comedy routine exhausting and overly laden with tired, old stereotypes instead of actual humor. All of them are forced to drive. Some people admit they are terrible drivers, but have no options if they still want to have a life not revolving around commuting.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 2 pts · 168d (1 reply)

Being a terrible driver and not making way for emergency vehicles aren't necessarily mutual.

Like, using another example, a bad driver might park a little over the line. An entitled asshole will purposely take up 4 spots or use the handicap space when they are not handicapped.

Tuuktuuk@nord.pub · 1 pts · 168d

I remember in 2009 or so there was a case in Berlin (a city in Germany) where someone made way for an ambulance by moving their car on the sidewalk. They did that moving very fast, killing a pedestrian.

Proves that even a very terrible driver can be able to make way for an ambulance.

  • death
  • murder
  • suicide
  • rape
  • guns
  • drugs

welcome to the dawn of the age of new speak. I heard a 13 year old kid last week say "unalive" instead of "kill".

we're so fucked.

azertyfun@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 168d

It's way worse. They don't ban you and they don't delete your content. TikTok ads don't pay enough that demonetization is a concern either.

The algorithm just silently (!) deranks your content. They don't have guidelines, they don't have feedback, they will never communicate on what is and is not okay to post about. You'll just say "Fuck ICE" in a video once and notice it is doing suspiciously worse than the rest, but then again, you're never quite sure why some of your videos "make it" and some don't. So maybe you're being paranoid? You can't tell.

So on top of the very real algorithmic censorship from these platforms, you've got very frequent bouts of mass psychosis where everyone self-censors for no other reason that other people are doing it and they don't want to risk it. Is the word "dead" de-ranked? Quite likely not even, but who's to say, and it doesn't cost anything to farm a little engagement in the comments by self-censoring...

Isn't the future bright?

Ja, well. Good luck finding someone to talk to.

In Germany, if you are seriously sick or injured, you need support from someone who can make demands of the hospital and the doctors, otherwise you get no info and probably not enough treatment and medication. If Mutti doesn't have anyone actively engaging with doctors and staff, Mutti is pretty much f'ed in proverbial a. Why? Because everyone is overworked and disillusioned and very tired, and there is never enough time or money to treat people properly because of the way our health system has been restructured: to be profit oriented - even public hospitals.

Still beats what they have in 'murica: at least you can get affordable treatment even as a nobody.

Berlin is larger (892km^2 vs 783km^2) and less population dense (6 million vs 20 million in the metro areas). So... Kinda comparing apples to oranges.

Edit: If you want a real comparison, look at Philadelphia or Chicago. Those are a little closer to Berlin than fucking NYC. But, I guess it's our turn to start a World War this time, so maybe after NYC gets razed we can rebuild like they did with Berlin and focus on modernizing traffic patterns for mass transit.

vapeloki@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 169d (7 replies)

There is just one small flaw: this study only had a look at people that made it alive to the hospital.

Also, as the study said in noumorus places, whilefor Germany, full statistics where available, the USA data is more hit and miss, and therefore not as granular as German data.

While it is true that Germany has one of the worst life expectancies in western Europe, this is attributed more to our style of live then our health care system.

Ambulance waiting times cost lives.

That is a proven fact.

raef@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 168d (6 replies)

The national target for ambulance response time in the US is 9 minutes. It's up to 19 in Germany

vapeloki@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 168d (5 replies)

Also correct. The target. And how many times this target is reached?

Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus · 3 pts · 169d (3 replies)

I would take that with a grain of salt, since the study here says it only deals with death inside of the hospital (which is what is expected of a system encouraging the individual to flee the expensive place as soon as possible):

Considering the markedly lower length of stay in U.S. hospitals, it seems likely that more deaths following AMI occur after hospital discharge in the U.S., compared to Germany. This assumption is supported by recent OECD publications, which also report U.S. 30-day AMI mortality based on linked data. This figure was at 9.3% in the year 2020, compared to 4.9% when based on unlinked data. For Germany, national 30-day AMI mortality figures based on linked data are not available to date. In other industrialized countries reporting both figures, the difference between mortality based on unlinked data and mortality based on linked data was not as pronounced as in the U.S. (e.g., 5.6% vs. 7.2% in France, 6.5% vs. 7.1% in Spain)

In addition, the median age of patients is quite a lot higher, and as we all know, we all die at some time. If i am in my 50s and have a heart attack, sign me up for a German hospital 100% of the time, at least i am not bankrupted afterwards if i survive.

Tuuktuuk@nord.pub · 1 pts · 168d (1 reply)

Also, when a share of the people die on the way to the hospital, the least healthy ones get culled from the the statistics. Some of the people why die into ambulances in USA would die in the hospital in Germany.

The multiplier of 1,5 can therefore also tell about a lot of people dying because of ambulances being stuck in traffic jams. Only the healthiest will make it to the hospital.

Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus · 2 pts · 167d

That was actually accounted for by the study. The study was looking for differences in reporting between Germany and the US and if/how they are relevant

raef@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 168d

It's hard to measure for those that don't try , but have to assume death will be declared in hospital for those on their way there.

raef@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 168d

That in built up areas the times are not so different. That is evident in many studies. Rural areas are incomparable as the US has rural areas at a level Germany can't understand

Reparations are a thing. Also you should really read up on denazification and how it stopped being useful to the US (and thus was ended) once the Communists became the new enemy.

Stop begging for someone else to save us and do something about it yourself. Organize, get to know your neighbors, save your money outside of the American economy.

I wish I could downvote this twice.

We tried that after WWI, let me know how that reparations turned out.

Oh, don't worry friend, history rhymes, and you're going to get your "payback". In fact, you're getting it right now, only not in the way you were expecting. This time around the Old World is going to be coming to the rescue of the New. Rescue it from the same fascist ideology.

Let me know how you plan on paying us back. But don't worry - we're not going to blackmail you into it. Europeans are more decent than that - nowadays we prefer the negotiations table. Which doesn't mean we've forgotten how to use guns. We're the ones who taught you how to wage war, after all.

By the way, Europe used to have its own ICE thing going on but we decided to disband it in 1945. Not sure why, but I've heard Americans had something do with it. Ironic, isn't it?
