No one ever looks in pepper grinders until they are empty, you could put a decent amount of dead beetles in one and the owner never even know.

You must not use good pepper corns then if you can't tell the difference between pepper and dead beetles.

SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world · 61 pts · 114d (1 reply)

These are very good dead beetles. Please don't compare them to peppercorns.

Butterphinger@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 114d

At 50% percentage, the peppercorn grinder becomes a beetle grinder full of peppercorns.

Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world · 37 pts · 114d (5 replies)

There's a very exact ratio where the average person wouldn't notice. I imagine it's higher than you'd think

Anivia@feddit.org · 16 pts · 114d (1 reply)

How much sawdust can you put in a rice crispy treat before someone notices?

NannerBanner@literature.cafe · 1 pts · 114d

It wasn't very much, if I remember that video well. Even the lowest amount they tested had them say they could tell a difference. Now, if they had not eaten a treat in a while, maybe you could get away with that lowest amount, but...

You didn’t have to write this you know.

When you cross that threshold, you've just got Grape Nuts.

Even more, the off brand Nutty Nuggets.

These are spicy 🔥 beetles!

More of a beetle feeder, no?

garbagebagel@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 114d (1 reply)

I feel like in order to think of doing this, they must have gone through the logistics and tested the plan

1D10@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 112d

Nah things like this just come to me, kinda like intrusive thoughts, then they rattle around until I tell someone.

One of the few things I have morals about is that you do not fuck with peoples food.

My pepper grinder is clear (except for the actual grinding mechanism, of course)

If you'd like we could grind up the beatles and reconstitute them into peppercorn sized balls for you

noxypaws@pawb.social · 9 pts · 114d

please do, i hate that band

Are your beetles reconstituted?

Would you like us to assign someone to reconstitute your beetles?

netvor@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 113d

my pepper grinder is clear as well, but point stands, i don't ever look there.

netvor@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 113d

is your point to have the grinder so small that you can basically observe every individual seed in it to check if it's not a beetle?

1D10@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 112d (1 reply)

Dammit, I have those. Now I need to find enough beetles to fill it. Do you know how long that is going to take?

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 112d

Depends on if you buy them in bulk or hunt them down one by one.

OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml · 23 pts · 114d

Yes officer, this one right here

I briefly worked ina health food bar factory that focused on raw or at least fresh ingredients. You are 100% eating bug parts.

GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca · 24 pts · 114d (2 replies)

Scientists who work with cockroaches often develop an allergy to them, which leads to them being allergic to ground coffee. Whole bean coffee is still okay. The difference is how likely you are to grind up a cockroach vs. a commercial coffee grinder. One of many sources.

Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 113d

Welp, that's a thing I didn't want to learn

obelisk_complex@piefed.ca · 1 pts · 114d

Ick. I've only had a few cups of pre-ground coffee in my life, because they were uniformly awful. I'd believe dead cockroaches are why, for sure.

mine are acrilic, I'd see i am wise to your wiley ways op!

SpongyAneurysm@feddit.org · 8 pts · 114d

I think I'd notice, because I look at the food I'm eating. I suppose ground beetles look different enough from ground pepper.

But I also have a bit of a biology background, so YMMV.

(Also taste, but I don't know as much about that. Maybe there are pepper beetles, I don't know about. But there are definitely some poisonous ones I'd rather avoid. )

AmidFuror@fedia.io · 6 pts · 114d (4 replies)

Serves those rich, pepper-mill using people right! If you're not scavenging your meals from dumpsters, you're probably exploiting the working class somehow.

Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 114d (3 replies)

I got my pepper mill from a good will :(

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 114d

Oh, a robot nurse replacing real human workers!? REAL NICE!

AmidFuror@fedia.io · 2 pts · 114d

Then it probably already came with beetles. You get a pass.

kambusha@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 114d

good will

So you inherited it?

netvor@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 113d (1 reply)

I don't use pepper but I use Himalayan crystal salt so your point stands, there could be decent amount of dead Buddhist monks there.

(I guess I'll have to be checking from now on.)

Wataba@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 113d

To be fair, anyone eating normal salt could in fact be consuming the remains of Lot's wife.

wuffah@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 114d (1 reply)

Where can I find large quantities of dried beetles? Asking for a friend.

SpongyAneurysm@feddit.org · 2 pts · 114d

Anywhere, where you can get insects as food. There are dedicated online shops and the only other place I've ever found them IRL was a camping/outdoors supplier, they are a very light source of protein. That's in the EU though, don't know how insect food is regulated wherever you live.

I never bought it though, I found it pretty expensive, don't really need it, and I'm a vegetarian anyways. I have tried them at a museum once, though. Pretty unspectacular if you ask me, a bit nutty in taste but also quite dry. I prefer actual nuts as a snack.

blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 113d

I've got one of those smell designer rabbits (don't worry, she's a rescue) and her turds are about the size of peppercorns
