There's nothing more satisfying that being able to gradually break something up, with different graphical layers of damage, without having to think about opponents getting in the way, like annoying mosquitoes.
So, Lemmy, any recommendations besides the bonus levels on Street Fighter II and Final Fight? Edit: Preferably not FPS.

Red Faction: Guerrilla? Smash some stuff on Mars?
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 86d
That does look good, thanks. I'll see if it'll run on my hardware.
noxypaws@pawb.social · 6 pts · 86d
It's quite old at this point, should run well on most stuff!
emb@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 85d
It's the first game that came to mind for me, too. Destruction there is very satisfying!
Buuuut people keep shooting at you. When playing it, I got constantly annoyed with the TPS elements and just wanted to tear stuff up. After a bit I bounced for that reason.

Plus it has a great song dedicated to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FCF2Y4lIWk&t=23

I mean, there's always the classic Rampage:

Seimhe@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 86d
Thanks for reminding me, I loved that game! Perfect recommendation, although the enemies do impede the satisfaction of getting on with it. Maybe there's a cheat to get rid of them.

There's a certain satisfaction to eating the enemies
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 85d
There is, actually.
ferrule@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 83d
Just beat it on the NES the other day. Even after the 120 levels it took to get to the end it still felt great smashing stuff.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 83d
120! At least it sounds possible from what you’re saying. I doubt I’ve ever gotten to level 10.
ferrule@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 83d
Yeah just looked it up, to finish off California its on day 128. If it was an arcade it would have cost me like $5 to $10 in quarters to beat.
mercano@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 86d
Hardspace: Shipbreaker has you tearing old spaceships apart for salvage. A lot of it is sorting your space recyclables, but towards the end of story mode
::: spoiler Spoiler You get to absolutely trash a wreck, recovering 0 salvage value, to show management what for. :::

Thanks for the rec!

This is the one I thought of. It's much more calming than the others but just great.
yyyesss@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 86d
Blast Corps for N64. IIRC, the whole point of the game was to use different heavy equipment to destroy stuff.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 86d
Now we're talking, thanks!
cloudless@piefed.social · 4 pts · 85d
Blast Corps is a great hidden gem. You should really try it.

I'm watching a review now, thanks. Looks like a good recommendation, although I'm not a huge fan of FPS. Edit: yeah, this is great but the learning curve is a bit much for me. I just want to smash :D
ChairmanMeow@programming.dev · 3 pts · 85d
You can open up sandbox maps if you want. Not all missions are timed either, some just let you smash shit.
Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 85d
There's an old game called Carmageddon where you could wreck people and other cars pretty well without interrupting.

Always enjoyed a good Death Race type game.
I always wanted a true updated Autoduel/Carwars arena combat game with distructble vehicles and locations.

BroForce. There are enemies, but it's totally just blowing shit up with parodies of action movie heroes. Lots of cascading explosions, very satisfying.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 85d
That looks like a really good rec. I'm sensitive to flashing lights and fast animations so it's not for me, but it's my vibe. Thanks.
southsamurai@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 85d
Broforce is ana absurd and delightful train wreck :)
Kolanaki@pawb.social · 10 pts · 85d
Blast Corps 64 - You need to smash everything out of the way of an out-of-control nuclear armed truck using various tools ranging from bulldozers to a full on mech suit.
Just Cause 3 - You capture enemy territory by blowing up everything colored red.
Teardown - You're a demolition company and you're tasked with demolishing various things.
Donkey Kong Banaza - Not played it myself, but the game just appears to be Donkey Kong going ape shit and wrecking up everything he sees.
The Sims - Smash and destroy the dreams and aspirations of your virtual doll people
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 85d
Thanks for the recs, I appreciate it! I haven't heard of JC3 and I haven't really seen The Sims so I'll check those out.
Sunsofold@lemmings.world · 10 pts · 85d
The term you would want to search for is 'destructible environments.'
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 85d
Thanks, I'm working through reviews on these :)

Rampage (1986) comes to mind, but (minor) enemies are present and I don't think it applies damage in layers.

Seimhe@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 85d
Yes, already commented by iknewitwhenisawit, but it's a great example that I'd forgotten. I doesn't have the damage in layers, but it does have gradual and incremental damage which is great.
who@feddit.org · 2 pts · 85d
I don't see any such comment. I guess federation could be lagging.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 85d
Ah, I get you. I didn't think of that. Thanks for the suggestion.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 8 pts · 86d
Can't believe I'm shilling for Nintendo for the second time in like a month but this seems to be a type of fantasy Donkey Kong: Bananza could fulfill? That whole game's selling point was fully destructible environments.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 85d
That does look good, thanks!
jordanlund@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 86d
Pretty much all of the Lego games are about destroying everything to get parts to build more things.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 86d
I only played the first Lego Batman, but I don't remember it. Would that count?
yaroto98@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 86d
Lego Worlds is the best for lego destruction.

Thanks.
bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de · 6 pts · 86d
Not super much destructible environment, but enough to satisfy most chaos gremlins, can be found in Goat Simulator.
otacon239@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 86d
Not retro, but Instruments of Destruction is made by one of the Red Faction devs. Also check out Abriss.
Both are machine building games with a focus on destruction. Instruments of Destruction does have a ton of prebuilt vehicles though if building isn’t your thing. The he campaign is also pretty easy to plow through to unlock the prebuilts.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 85d
Both look good, but I appreciate the mention of the prebuilt vehicles because building isn't my thing. Great comment, thanks.

If you ignore the missions, Jungle/Urban/Desert Strike. Just annihilate the president's motorcade via helicopter, as you do.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 86d
Haven't heard Desert Strike in decades. Thanks, that's a good rec.

Not really what you want, but Two Crude (Dudes) is one of the stupidest game I have ever played. Available on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It's Final Fight in a Mad Max environment, and it's very ugly.
Seimhe@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 86d
That looks enjoyable. It's 2D and seems like you can tear down the environment more than most platform games. Thanks! https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=v91XLMM79PM
