The expanse

Babylon 5

Trek - tng and ds9

Batman TAS

Battlestar Galactica 2003

EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 18 pts · 73d (4 replies)

I'll add Voyager to that trek list.

And +1 for BSG, I've always loved the show. I actually just watched the first two episodes again this past week, but for the first time I decided to smoke some weed first.

Holy shit I get WAY more into the show when I'm baked... Like I was trying not to cry when the 60 FTL capable ships left the other 20ish behind and they focused on the little girl playing with her bear as the nukes detonated...

And hearing everyone go from a solemn, muttered "so say we all..." to a strong, purposeful "SO SAY WE ALL!"

chef's kiss

I really like the bits of the Expanse I've seen. I absolutely love how realistic they portray space life, especially combat. After a few episodes I realized it was one long continued story, and the series was still being worked on, I lost all drive to finish it.

I'll pick it back up eventually, it just feels like sitting down to watch a 200 hour movie, rather than a TV show.

7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 9 pts · 73d (1 reply)

Yeah the expanse book series is apparently three duologies and a trilogy.

But that mindset helped me frame the story better.

Expanse

crater2150@feddit.org · 1 pts · 71d

Also, the trilogy is set 30 years after Babylon's Ashes, so even if I'd have liked the TV show to continue after book 6, it finished in a way that doesn't leave any major cliffhangers.

I'm still hoping they'll simply continue the show 30 years after the last season, so that all actors have the right age. Although

::: spoiler Spoiler for book 7 Duarte hasn't aged because of protomolecule treatment, so that one would still need another actor or a lot of makeup :::

dkppunk@piefed.social · 8 pts · 73d

I'll add Voyager to that trek list

+1 for Voyager. I’m almost finished a watch through now and I’m kicking myself for not watching it as a kid. I watched so many reruns of TNG and DS9 after school but somehow missed Voyager.

And The Expanse is well worth the watch. The books are phenomenal and some of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

Cethin@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 72d

The start of BSG is so good. One of the best, if not the best, starts of any show. 33, in particular, is so strong. It really makes you feel the pressure that they're being hunted.

Sadly the end of the show isn't nearly as good. It's not a Game of Thrones ending, but it's a drop in quality from the start, but I don't know how you'd end it with the same level as it starts.

You’re so lucky. I had to both wait for each of these to debut, but also for a WEEK for each new ep! For ALL of these series!

All of which I now have on my Plex server, and frequently binge, lol!

7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 73d

The bulk of those I also had to wait. Same for Voyager... Honestly I couldn't watch early Voyager because of the UPN network... Lol

But yeah all on my Plex server now too. The wife and I are in DS9 and I'm watching through the expanse in 4K. This is my first time watching.I figured I needed to watch it after I read the series.

EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 73d

I ALSO had to wait for every new episode of ds9 and voy. I wasn't of watching-and-following age for most of tng. So I had to wait for re-runs. And hope they were aired in order since sometimes they only aired half a two-parter.

I need to get them moved over to my hard drive, I think I have all the dvds...

TheEighthDoctor@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 73d

The expanse is great, I started watching the show then I read the books and then I never finished the show 😄

I keep trying to get into the expanse but it's just not latching. Weird as hell 'cos i'm a massive scifi nerd.

7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 73d

It's really slow you can't think of it as seasons you have to think of it as story arcs

And the first season is a slog.

I stopped watching it because it was so slow and read the books.

Start with "Slippin' Jimmy' ;), then watch BB, then El Camino, then Better Call Saul.

Rinse & repeat.

chiliedogg@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 73d (1 reply)

Disagree. Breaking Bad should be approached cold.

brem@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 73d

Yes. Most people aren't aware that 'Slippin Jimmy' is a real show. I mean, it's animated.. and it's terrible. Vince hates it.

I agree. Start cold with Walter in his Walter tighty whities.

hOrni@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 73d (3 replies)

Hard disagree. BCS is nothing like BB. I loved Breaking Bad, hated Better Call Saul. I couldn't even force myself to watch the final season.

brem@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 73d (1 reply)

Most people that I have talked to prefer Better Call Saul, because Breaking Bad has the stigma of a terrible drug hanging over the premise. It's harder for Joe Everyperson to watch Breaking Bad because it feels dirty. BCS has a more familiar swindly feeling because that's who Saul is and Saul represents a lot of people. But so does Walter.

They're both great companion series, my point was to make sure anyone reading this would watch Saul after breaking bad. It doesn't work the other way. Watch it as it was released. Hell, they overlapped at the end (iirc)

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 73d

Wow. Seriously? Maybe people would feel differently if they knew Hal was truly the villain, not the hero.

homes@piefed.world · 4 pts · 73d

I’m on board here. Didn’t hate hate BCS, but if you’re gonna get into the style of Vince Gilligan, you need to start with breaking bad before you get into better call Saul, because it’s extremely heavy and takes a bit of patience to get through.

Plus, even though BCS is a prequel, there’s a lot of references to breaking bad, so you should watch breaking bad first.

hOrni@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 73d (4 replies)

I've watched it quite recently. It lives up to the hype. But don't bother with Better Call Saul. It's nothing like Breaking Bad. I've found it boring and annoying.

brem@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 73d (3 replies)

Before you get downvoted into oblivion for desecrating a great show, would you like to take a moment to tell the audience what your favorite show is?

hOrni@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 73d (2 replies)

Bob's Burgers.

StarryPhoenix97@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 73d

I perfer The Great North.

I was really hearbroken when they cancelled but it got 5 excellent seasons. It felt like it was written just for me sometimes.

Its a very specific kind of niche. Those of us that grew up in small mountain towns but ended up in the city can really see the love and detail. I used to watch it with my buddy and we would just be blown away by all the little touches. Really, anyone that spent a significant amount of time in their life in 'cabin country' would get a hit of cozy that they didn't know they needed.

brem@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 73d

It was so worth it though. The writing was superb with seemingly throwaway plot points coming back years later in full force. It may have taken years to write but the pacing and story was nearly perfect every season.

kaklerbitmap@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 73d (1 reply)

The original BBC radio version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is absolutely incredible. It's a radio play read by Douglas Adams, so its a step up from a normal audio book and they do a fantastic job on all the voice acting, sound effects and music. This isnt an adaptation either - the series started as a radio sitcom, and was adapted into books, TV, movies, etc.

Agreeing with the other response. Yes, absolutely recommending them! But the first season is better than the second. Second isn't bad, just isn't quite as good. I recently started watching The Blacklist. It's totally silly, but it's worth it just to watch a couple of James Spader monologues every episode. They're silly, too, but he's so fucking fun to watch.

The Americans was an amazing show that many people missed. Right up there with Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos, Deadwood, etc.

Also Star Trek: Next Generation, ST: Deep Space 9, ST: Voyager, ST: Strange New Worlds. Star Trek: The Original Series is super campy and fun, but it's not great, but it is is great.

ST:Enterprise, and ST: Discovery suck.

Also Twilight Zone.

Next time you run across hushpuppy heaven, ask for "the fritter fratter", they'll take you to the basement. Yes, every location has a basement...

Anyway,

After you get down there, a person in full leather will fall out of the ceiling from above. Dust them off, then say "let's get at er"

The leather clad greeter will then seat you and give you the actual menu.

Ask for "The Peg-Leg" and your server will appear, dressed as a parrot; and lead you back upstairs to the fryers in the kitchen, dumping everything into the same grease.

Explaining to you why this is how it has to be, your server will then take you by the hand to the bathrooms, the very last stall, and shall point at a glory hole with the sharpie inscription "here be Long John"
