FYI, Dr. Glaucomflecken is an ophthalmologist and has a YouTube channel full of medical comedy bits. I'd link it but I'm too tired from writing and triple-checking "Glaucomflecken" and "ophthalmologist".
It’s a stage name. His real name is Will Flanary and Glaucomflecken is a medical term:
Glaucomflecken are small, gray-white spots that form on the front layer of the eye’s natural lens. They are the physical scars left behind when the eye has suffered a sudden, severe spike in internal pressure, typically due to an episode of acute angle-closure glaucoma.
Oh shit, I know that channel and didn’t pick up who it was until your comment made me look closer at his profile picture. He’s pretty damn funny with healthcare relevant comedy.
"did he finish the chore?" "-no, he stopped it and came to the doctor's office on his own initiative!" .......... [BIG RED BUTTON PRESSED] "GET THE CHOPPER!"
Jesus, I didn't think they made contacts that thick. On the bright side, those bad boys could probably stop a direct hit from a nail gun before it hit your eye. I bet it's like wearing permanent safety glasses.
As far as I know only one company does, so uh, hope you like them because it's that or glasses thick as a submarine window. Even with the -16 I can still only get to 20/50 vision thanks to the early onset cataracts caused by the extreme myopia. Is what it is though, I don't complain.
I appreciate the consideration. Honestly, I can see better now than in my 20s thanks to years of conscious effort to train my brain to use that eye too. When I finally got a vision test at around five years old, I was already pretty bad off in the one eye, but the other was fine at the time, so my brain just kind of learned to use it for peripheral vision and not much else. Hopefully I don't get macular degeneration or a detached retina, but what can you do but make the best of it? Take care out their folks, and get your kids eyes checked!
I started my contacts journey at +7.5 and +7.75. I've been in +3.00 and +3.25 for about 10 years now. No one knows why I dramatically got better in 3 years but that was a wild 3 years of not really being able to see because it was changing so much.
I would put my glasses down and lose them... My eye doctor warned me though that since I'm approaching 40 I'm about to start trending the other direction. Yay...
Oh and to top it all off my right eye is a lazy eye and it doesn't like to stay centered (not very notifiable noticeable thankfully) so my brain has just decided to basically not interpret most of the info from that eye so I'm just winning over here lol.
What a prick. As if he could tell from that picture how attractive she is anyway, she's not dressed in a revealing way, which is a suggestion to not talk about her looks like that.
I'd never heard of this guy either. But I read all the way to the bottom and deduced from the last comment that his previous comment meant something other than the woman's appearance. It requires using intelligence.
The glasses she refers to and are wearing are the context of his comment. That's pretty easy to understand if you aren't obsessed with standards of physical beauty.
Hes talking about her glasses but like, on the subject of people actually making comments like you've misunderstood him to be doing, people aren't more deserving of crappy comments on their bodies based on how they dress 😅
Either give someone a non-dickhead compliment in a context where its appropriate or keep your thoughts to yourself. Learning to understand what kinds of compliments don't carry a feeling of entitlement to their time and reciprocation for the person receiving them is a skill, but its an important one thats worth doing. And It's important to remember that person doesnt owe you any attention or positivity back for the fact you chose to comment on them
(Much of this isnt really purely a reply to you teyrnon, not trying to single you out, just saw the opportunity to address the way we comment on people and expand on the idea that the way people dress doesnt mean folks are entitled to interacting with them in a way that sucks for the person being commented on)
I don't think you need to see any body to tell that she has a pretty face, just to counter your implied "there's no way to know for sure whether or not she's that ugly and it's rude to point it out while she's dressed like that".

I’m a doctor and every time I write ophthalmologist I’m surprised at how many H’s there are and where they end up.
akwd169@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 45d
Phenolphthalein is a similar experience, as a chemist
So strange to surround a T with H's like that
CrackaAssCracka@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 44d
Bless your heart, chemistry made me despise our reality and how it works.
Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 45d
Of you could just not worry about it in any language that spells words sensibly. It's fenolftalein where I live.

I know, right? At least it's not otorhinolaryngology.

Oh you mean ENT? I refuse to acknowledge the existence of any other term for the specialty.

He's awesome. And hes doing real activism for the fucked up US medical system.
Manalith@midwest.social · 22 pts · 46d
Is his name genuinely that close to Glaucoma or is it a "stage" name. If real, I think that's wild he chose to become an ophthalmologist.
colforge@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 46d
It’s a stage name. His real name is Will Flanary and Glaucomflecken is a medical term:

Flecken is German for spots. Glaukomflecken just means glaucoma spots.

With a name like "Glaucomaflecken," he was destined to become an opthalmologist.

He also has an eyeball themed podcast called Knock Knock, Hi.

I'm apparently already subscribed to him, but looks like he mostly does shorts...? I've avoided those things like the plague...
I want to watch his videos but don't really want to open the Pandora box that is shorts, trying to make me scroll forever until I'm brain dead

Hah i saw the "dr" first and knew what he was talking about. Also helps to be a glasses wearer in this case i guess

Jeez +7.5 is incredibly uselessly blind. "Maybe can read a billboard" ass prescription
Hell I'm around where you are now, and sometimes get jealous of my myopic wife for being able to read without glasses even if it is super close.

Okay, so he's an ophthalmologist, and he's talking about what her potential prescription for her glasses might be.
It is easily misread as a misogynist measurement of her beauty, and he recognizes that and acknowledges it. It wasn't what he meant. Hence, the meme.
