I'm still flabbergasted by this ridiculous outrage, like, it was crazy. Calling a bit of natural peach fuzz a beard, crazy work. These incels and weirdos really are twisted ass dudes.

Humans are mammals, so we're a bit hairy, that's genuinely not out of the ordinary for a regular woman to have a bit of peach fuzz. What isn't normal is making it seem abnormal, these chuds, they're truly tragic in so many ways.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -26 pts · 25d (40 replies)

it's ragebait.

if you raged and took this seriously, they won.

the point of posts like this is to make people flip out and get them to reply and push engagement.

and it works. it worked on you.

call them names all you want, you are giving them what they want.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 21 pts · 25d (1 reply)

The tag that I added to the above user's handle gives me a good chuckle every time I see them in the wild. Helps balance the rank odiousnesses of many of their comments lol the irony of a troll like them calling something rage bait only adds to my glee.

LostWanderer@fedia.io · 15 pts · 25d (37 replies)

I didn't take this seriously, it's just confusing that this caused people to actually lose their minds. There's no rage to be felt about this as all I feel is absolutely confused this passes for something to feel outrage over. ROFL It's just weird to me that they never saw a woman up close, and knew that peach fuzz is a thing women have on their faces. I did call them names, but, incel does seem fitting in this case. More than ever.

starik@lemmy.today · 5 pts · 25d (36 replies)

I think they’re saying that the OP’s OP’s OP was rage bait, i.e. the guy pretending not to know people have fine hair everywhere was just trolling.

They’re still wrong.

starik@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 25d (14 replies)

Maybe. It’s impossible to know. If it is rage bait, it definitely worked.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 25d (13 replies)

There were very real tantrums about this. Look at the reaction to the new God of War.

Pretending like incels don’t whine about the “integrity of their games” and “woke bullshit” is silly.

starik@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 25d

I know. Just saying it’s not clear in this instance. It seems almost too ridiculous to be real, but it could be.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 25d (19 replies)

i also think it's funny how enraged people are you suggest it's rage bait.

because clearly this is some huge problem, instead of stupid internet flaming bullshit.

but ragebait works. people love being angry over stupid bullshit and projecting their angst at imaginary chuds that likely don't really exist.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 24d (18 replies)

No one is mad you're calling it rage bait, though what you're doing is rage baiting as well since if you were around the internet when that game released you know full well all the gamergate chuds lost their fucking minds. Fuckin dweebs are always so loud. Anyway yeah this was actual discourse for a month or two, not just assholes ragebaiting.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 24d (17 replies)

My interpretation of gamergate, which I was there watching it happen live, was very very different than the popular narrative about it.

But hey, what do I know, I only lived through it. I didn't read about it through a bunch of idiot mainstream journalists who only focused on the 'evil men vs innocent women' narrative to score the post clicks.

A lot of the 'harassment' that the key female figures received, never had any evidence. I also knew Zoey Quin, I went out with her on a date in 2011. She was an absolute nutcase, probably had BPD or something. Her grasp on reality was very tenuous before gamergate, so I doubt anything she said about those event was remotely truthful. And I'm sure her boyfriend there was also equally mentally ill.

But sure, tell me how I'm rage baiting or something. Despite me having personally known at least one of the people involved. And I also was friends with a person who was friends with Anita in SF, who also told me she was an absolute nutcase of a person. And my friend's husband, who was also a figure in gamergate, though minor, was an another absolute psycho. She divorced him two years later because of his physical and mental abuse of her. He also went on and on about 'harassment' and 'abuse' when his shitty games got bad reviews. He, like Anita, Zoey, and all the rest, were trust fund babies who engaged in all sorts of abuse, manipulation, and lying about who they were and their finances. My friends husband had all his millions in offshore accounts, and would post to social media about how he was struggling to get idiots to give money for his 'art'.

Notice how now these figures all gave up on gaming, and go around being professional victims? Getting paid 1000s to talk about their 'trauma' and how horrible and awful gaming culture is? Yeah, that's just more grift. It was never about games. It was abotu them creating a narrative by which they could con people into giving them money for playing a imaginary role.

And lots of social media/influencer figures out there are like this. They make up fake drama that has no factual or evidential basis, never appears in court, and milk their fans for huge sums of money. It happens again and again, and people like you eat it up, because you love this notion that these are poor innocent helpless people being abused by these evil faceless masses of harassment. It's manipulation through and through.

but hey, what do i know, right, i'm clearly just another evil chud right? it can't possibly be that gamergate was just a lot of shitheads being shitheads, and faking everything so they could score cash and fame from the ignorant public... people never ever do that, right? that's not... a proven business model we've seen replicated again and again.

and reporters ate it up, despite having no sourced evidence other than the hearsay of the participants. I remember another local figure who lived in my city, who reported all this harassment, opened a police report, and it was shut down because the police found no evidence and she would provide none of this so called harassment. And what she do? claim it was police ignorance/misogyny, and her fans ate it up and her donations piled up... and her game she was working on... all the sudden development stopped and she dissipated from the gaming/public scene entirely. weird how her 'art' she 'struggled' for no longer matter one she had a few 100K in donations, oh and she fired the two people working for her.

and clearly I'm just lying and making this all up right? the level of detail is just my imagination, not my lived experience and memory that doesn't mesh up with the 'gamergate was bad mean people harassing innocent women' narrative most folks seem to believe.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 24d

Eh... Very visually beautiful, but for some reason, the gameplay just didn't appeal to me much and I couldn't really get into it much. Didn't help that (at least in the beginning of the one I played) the story seemed bland, vague, and a bit confusing.

Still, though, visually wonderful. Amazing graphics and art.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 24d

Wow really? The story is one of my favorite parts, I put it up there with BioShock in terms of ludonarrative resonance. Admittedly it gets a bit fuzzy in the sequel but the characters are well written and the world building is delightful. But everyone has their tastes, and the combat is something you either click with or spend the whole game fighting against. I will say combat is a bit sloppier in the sequel, they give you quite a few more tools but no real reason to use them for the most part. Still a good time though.

buddascrayon@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 24d (3 replies)

There was a similar reddit thread about this game character a couple of years ago in which a guy had posted his screenshot of his "improved" model of her for everyone to admire his work and was defending his modding of the character to "beautify" her because he didn't like her "masculine" qualities such as facial hair, not having a "feminine shaped face", skinny waist, voluptuous bosom, etc. The consensus through most of the thread was that the guy was a chud. But he really ground his heels in on the fact that he didn't think female video game characters should be in any way "ugly" (to how he saw them).

Sanctus@anarchist.nexus · 7 pts · 24d (1 reply)

Which is bullshit he would think that. This peach fuzz is fucken impressive. I bet these models took upwards of hundreds maybe even breaking a thousand hours to make.

Things like that are usually photo mode or cinematic only. Things where you can either expect the player to not notice mild latency, and you can turn off the rest of the universe except for what's on screen.

Games are shockingly good at hiding absolutely everything that doesn't need to be sent to the render system.

There's massive benefit to representing women accurately in media.

Saapas@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 24d (15 replies)

Does a game studio in this case actually care about that? I'd just expect them to want to make most money with least effort. That's why I'm surprised

velma@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 24d (14 replies)

....they did? They made the game this way. This game is already out.

I think it's kinda funny that you're surprised they would be inclusive. I'd bet there are quite a few women on the dev team and there are quite a few women who play these games.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 24d (5 replies)

Women play games. And men who appreciate attention to detail play games.

The only people who might be turned away from buying this game because of this particular detail are incels. And why should a game studio cater to them?

Saapas@piefed.zip · 0 pts · 24d (4 replies)

Incels are a big player base. But they've probably done the math on which one benefits them more

velma@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 24d

Considering the game sold 8.4 million copies by April 2023, I don't think the incel community is as big of a player base as you think.

prime_number_314159@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 24d

The studio probably doesn't set out with an exact artistic vision, and then arrive there as quickly as possible. Much more likely they decided 15 (or whatever) artists is enough for this project, and they are paying them until the project is done. For the artists, that means if they've met the bare minimum, then chasing smaller and smaller things to keep busy... Keeps them busy.

Likewise, the studio is (hopefully) still within their estimate for the art budget, so there's no one breathing down their neck about cutting costs there. It's not worth it to fire people just because the work is done, especially if they might need that capacity for something close to release.

Technically, the director (or someone) probably could tell them "That's everything for now. Doomscroll until we need you again", but that's not really best for anyone - so effort spent on meaningless detail wins.

I didn't mind that part of the sequel. The writing wasn't as good though but my main issue weirdly was just that they give you a bunch more weapons and tools and no reason whatsoever to use most of them. When her face isn't taking up more than 50% of the screen, the beard isn't rendered. Mipmaps for Level-Of-Detail

The beard is likely only rendered in cut-scenes, and that's likely it.
No triangles were harmed in the making of this beard

Edit: The original post (coward) read something like

I get that women have beards, but why waste gpu cycles on something so unneccesary

BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 24d (7 replies)

Hair is the one hardest and most GPU time consuming object to render realistically. OP was correct to ask about the sense of doing it in the first place

jj4211@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d (4 replies)

However to gripe at that, one would tend to want there to be evidence of the game being seen as particularly poorly performing. Horizon is not a game series known as struggling to keep up, so it's silly to try to blame a non-existant problem on the model detail.

It could make more sense if the game was known to struggle that they couldn't afford the performance budget to do such a subtle detail, or they didn't manage LoD right.

BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d (3 replies)

Nah, it's always a tradeoff - they had to reduce detail elsewhere to squeeze this. There's no free lunch.

jj4211@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d (1 reply)

Well, in that case, what detail is terribly missing to make room for this?

BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d

I don't know "what if" they had bigger GPU budget for other stuff. Maybe they could make better foliage? Maybe better textures? Or better lighting? Ask them.

Spacehooks@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 23d (1 reply)

Was it cut scene or in game graphics? In game sure sure but cut scene probably ok with the render farm the devs have.

I doubt you can see that in game unless it photo mode and even then it may only render if close. If they didnt do it that way that'd blow my mind on the efficiency of code.

BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23d

I mean, there are cases when game devs are just flexing - like in Witcher 2 opening scene with Roche interrogating Geralt. Super simple environment, super detailed body. They did similar thing in opening scene of W3. But other than showcase of skill and engine this is pretty pointless

Wouldn't it be a similar amount of graphics used as putting in a man's beard?

Horizon Forbidden West was designed to run on most people's PCs and the PS5.

Real representation of women in media is important, yes.

With Horizon Forbidden West now available on PC, benchmarks have revealed whether the game plays better on AMD or Nvidia hardware. While GeForce GPUs put in a respectable performance, it's clear that the port runs best on Radeon graphics cards.

Despite its origins as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, you don't need the best graphics card to play Horizon Forbidden West. In fact, the game appears to run well on aging pixel pushers, providing you're willing to turn down a few settings and make use of dynamic resolution scaling (DRS).

AMD's victory in Forbidden West has been certified by Computer Base, which tested more than ten graphics cards across multiple generations and manufacturers, using a Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU to get its results.

HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 25d (6 replies)

Normally you don't see the individual hairs with a mans beard do you? More of a mesh and texture over it.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 24d (4 replies)

Actually starting about ten fifteen years ago it was a big trend in games to add realistic hair that models individual strands and how they react to movement and gravity. Bunch of games have a real hair setting or something like that, Witcher 3 did it and boy did you need a beefy rig to handle that when it came out.

ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 24d (3 replies)

Back then it was TressFX and NVIDIA HairWorks. Real good hair with physics is making a comeback, that new Dragon Age no one played has excellent hair.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d (2 replies)

I played it! It was a pretty good game if a bit too PG. Terrible dragon age though. I do not know who thought nice-washing the literally grittiest most grim dark violent fantasy IP was a good idea.

ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 24d (1 reply)

It started as a live-service game (cause Anthem was such a success for EA), so they had to file all the edges for mass marketability.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 24d

Yeah and even with the development hell it went through, the final product was still a fun game, and one of the best performing ue5 games to date even. It's just not good at being dragon age. Like, the violent brutal brotherhood of assassins that literally abduct children and torture them either till they die or become assassins themselves and keep an entire city in line through fear of death, they're just portrayed as a bunch of lovable rogues! Like half the kids they abduct die in training. It's ridiculous.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 24d

How old are all y'all? This game isn't that old, and hard R Gamers were screeching about Aloy's facial hair and other parts of her design constantly, till they found out she was gay. All this is ignoring that when the first game released the character was a minor and chuds still screeched about how she wasn't attractive enough.

ceenote@lemmy.world · -19 pts · 25d (22 replies)

Less "Why do women have hair" and more "Why are developers spending time and money on peach fuzz when game development is already too expensive?"

ricecake@sh.itjust.works · 35 pts · 25d

Because it's part of how you get realistic light scattering in the photo modes and visuals that people like?
You can't have realistic graphics without doing the things that make something look realistic.

It's the same reason they spend time figuring out how light moves through cheek skin: if the light doesn't do that you look like a plastic sculpture and it's wrong.

Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca · 15 pts · 25d

Love a good fuzzy peach.

terranoid@lemmy.cafe · -14 pts · 25d (18 replies)

I've always seen the argument coming from incels who want their game women to look like anime, but this is the first realistic take on it.

Yeah, i don't want to spend money on a new graphics card because some artistic vision includes peach fuzz. Realism in video games has met a new point where, we dont want to spend money on seeing more realism.

Like it's cool to see some realistic hair but i dont want to smell Geralt's unwashed anus when i havent visited a bath house in a while. I cant speak for everyone, but realism isnt always necessary or better.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 17 pts · 25d (11 replies)

Wouldn't it be a similar amount of graphics used as putting in a man's beard?

Also did most people have to upgrade their graphics cards to play Horizon: Forbidden West? I thought it was scaled to most people's setups?

With Horizon Forbidden West now available on PC, benchmarks have revealed whether the game plays better on AMD or Nvidia hardware. While GeForce GPUs put in a respectable performance, it's clear that the port runs best on Radeon graphics cards.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 24d

It's ironic he brought up Geralt when Witcher 3 actually had a setting specifically for realistic hair that did stress your system if it wasn't powerful enough.

realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 25d

Wouldn't it be a similar amount of graphics used as putting in a man's beard?

Yes, but a beard on a man makes up a significant part of his appearance. A few barely visible hair do nothing for graphics except waste performance - a negligible amount tho, tbf.

But then again, afaik, the in game model has none of this facial hair. It's just on the box art.

ceenote@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 25d (8 replies)

I would say the key difference is that facial peach fuzz will be virtually invisible except in a close up still frame, and if it's missing it won't be missed.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 25d (5 replies)

I'd counter by saying that girls and women playing this game would be able to identify with Aloy and real representation of women in media would be missed.

ceenote@lemmy.world · -10 pts · 25d (4 replies)

Suit yourself. I think that anything that's invisible except in a close-up still frame is a poor use of resources in a video game, and that nobody would say "hang on, where's her peach fuzz?"

velma@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 25d (2 replies)

This topic has already been debated to death.

The game developers don't care what you think.

Women being accurately portrayed in media is important.

ceenote@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 25d

I don't know how to make it clearer that I'm not talking about representation, I'm talking about bloated game development. I'm a hairy guy, but hair on a man's chest being modeled instead of just a texture would be a waste, too.

piccolo@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 25d

You clearly have no idea how games work. Level of detail graphics has been a solved problem for well over two decades. Simply you render high detail up close and remove details at a distance when it wont be noticed.

otter@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 25d

It's also possible that some details don't render unless you are close enough to see it, and so it won't take up much space

msfroh@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 25d

Horizon Forbidden West added a "photo mode", I think mostly just to show off how good the graphics can be (when nothing is being animated). It does look awesome. If you zoom the camera in, you get anatomically correct facial features.

There might also be some conversation scenes with close-ups of Aloy. Depending on your graphics settings, you might get some extra details rendered.

I am absolutely convinced that the game is not rendering fine hairs while you're fighting robot dinosaurs, since, as you suggest, that would be kind of ridiculous.

But, hey, you really kicked the shit out of that straw man! Great job!

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 24d (1 reply)

It's funny you bring up Geralt when Witcher 3 has a specific setting just for realistic hair, and that setting would stress your system if it wasn't up to snuff. Picked a poor example there.

terranoid@lemmy.cafe · 0 pts · 24d

That's my point exactly though. Allowing someone to turn off Nvidia Hairworks so you can play on weaker hardware or get more fps is the right move. You had the choice and it should look good either way.

schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 25d (2 replies)

Part of the problem is everyone is on UE5 and UE5 does everything for you, which means the art of designing a game engine to efficiently do exactly what you want it to do for your unique game is a dead art. True innovation in game design is gone, so all you have are massive budgets trying to push as many photorealistic details down a standardized pipeline as possible to make a game look AAA.

piccolo@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Zero dawn isnt a UE game it is on guerrilla's own engine, Decima.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 24d
