The guy would probably vote for trump again if given the opportunity

im_fine_sandy@nord.pub · 54 pts · 22h (2 replies)

Or at best, just not vote.

plateee@piefed.social · 36 pts · 20h

Listen, I'll take disengagement at this point (from former maga).

Just don't fall for inevitable voter fraud that comes after.

Cethin@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 12h

This should be encouraged. It is a useful tactic, and you can tell this because it's the tactic they use on us. You see all the things about not voting for a Democrat? Those aren't people abstaining from voting for moral reasons (at least originally, but it is spread by people who buy the message). It's spread because it keeps people from voting who would solidly be voting Democrat.

kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world · 116 pts · 19h (6 replies)

The older I get, the more it becomes apparent that the primary political distinction between people is how many degrees of separation from themselves they care about people. The more you care about people barely connected to you at all, the more progressive you are. The more your scope of concern for people is limited to people in your immediately sphere, the more conservative you are.

It is not always selfishness that sways conservatives. They can care genuinely and deeply for their family, friends, colleagues, and community. But that is typically as far as that scope of concern goes. They can take on more progressive political positions or make limited exceptions when their lifelong regressive politics suddenly negatively affects themselves or those close to them. Their kid comes out as trans, their work friend is black, their community is being spoiled by a corporation, and suddenly they are a progressive ally on those things alone. But what they care about will still be limited to those in their bubble. They will not care that their politics has the same effect on someone else's family until it happens to their's. It's a genuine character flaw. They are incapable of general altruism.

Lyrl@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 22 pts · 18h

Unfortunately, that it's such a widespread characteristic means society can only maintain progressive institutions by figuring out a way to protect them from being considered "enemy other" by people like that. There are selfish reasons to support safety nets - treating infectious diseases in poor communities prevents transmission to wealthier communities, for example - but those reasons haven't been sold in a way to gain traction with today's conservatives.

mojo_raisin@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 12h (1 reply)

in-groups and out-groups

There are 2 types of people, those who think might makes right and those who think consent makes right. The might-makes-right type form rigid hiearchies and well defined in-groups and the group leaders are always working to shrink the group and demonstrate status.

kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 12h

Right but I think that that particular strategy just plays on that character flaw. Consevatives care about very few poeple, and if you can manipulate who those poeple are that they care about, and concentrate the types of people they care about, you can control WHAT they care about.

Progressives are also susceptible to in-group/out-group manipulation too. But our out-groups are those who oppress or disenfranchise others. So you would manipulate us by convincing us that that is happening when it isn't, or isn't happening when it is. Sound like a familiar argument?

Vandals_handle@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 13h

Observed the same, mostly agree. Many hold bigoted "one of the good ones" attitude, never an ally for people outside their circle.

Hapankaali@lemmy.world · 94 pts · 1d (16 replies)

Trump's support has fallen by another 0.1% this month! It will be soon.

Here are some approval ratings for context:

  • Trump: 39.5%
  • Merz: 14%
  • Macron: 27%
  • Starmer (just before resigning): 23%

Trump's lowest ever approval rating in RCP's average was 37% (Dec 2017), which was around the time it was revealed to the public Trump aided the Russian military in attacking US targets.

Waterpumpee@lemmus.org · 34 pts · 23h (3 replies)

For context Germany (Merz) isnt a 2 Party-System. Basically we have 4 Major ones currently (afd, spd, cdu, green) and a few minor ones (left, left but pro russia, libs). With the major ones usually getting double digits % and the minor ones barely make it over 5% which is the baseline to participate in parliament. There are also very small parties listed as "misc" getting 10-20 of votes but not participating in parliament. Imo this 5% barrier and ignoring 20% of votes is a problem.

Anyhow, if the votes concluded its normal that multiple parties form alliances and agree which policies they want to implement to get over the 50% threshold. Mostly dropping anything the voters wanted and implementing stuff rich people want under the blanket of "finding compromises".

While 14% is really bad it's also just harder to get everyone behind you in such a plural political scene. Also Merz said stuff to insult about any worker. But the policies are particularly bad for workers yet the (self attributed) workers party SPD agreed to these policies. So Merz is problematic but it's 2 whole parties that are problematic and outright lie during elections.

Hapankaali@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 19h (1 reply)

For context Germany (Merz) isnt a 2 Party-System. (sic)

Sure, that's true. Angela Merkel's approval rating, however, reached as high as 77%.

Imo this 5% barrier and ignoring 20% of votes is a problem.

I am also not a fan of the 5% threshold. If, as opinion polls now suggest could be a real possibility, the AfD manages to gain an absolute majority with less than 50% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, it will be more than a problem but a full-fledged constitutional crisis.

ajikeshi@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 19h

Sure, that’s true. Angela Merkel’s approval rating, however, reached as high as 77%.

that mostly is a question of how the question is being asked, like you could ask merz approve/disapprove, or does he do a good/bad job...

but for merkel in regards to her doing a "good" job.... suprisingly many people thought that, see https://www.statista.com/chart/23144/merkel-opinion-polls-since-2005/

and as far as i can tell, the "14%" number is voters from another party's approval rating of merz, see https://min.news/en/world/1507853cbdd8c108c09a91cd4c3a9850.html

The support rate of the Union Party dropped to 27%, and the support rate of the Social Democratic Party dropped to 13%.

which would make a lot more sense.

but the fact remains, that merz is quite unpopular due to his political agenda, and him opening his mouth

kettuli@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 19h

Finland also has a multi-party system. Our current government is an alliance of a right-wing party, an even more right-wing party (now with verified nazis) and two small fillers that are now also right-wing parties. Hooray for democracy.

Not really, no, considering the systems aren't a match either.

Hapankaali@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 19h (4 replies)

They mean whatever you want them to mean.

Obviously, a different electoral system will affect the approval rating of politicians. Nevertheless, I think it illustrates the deeply servile attitude of Americans towards their politicians, especially considering none of the other examples have had scandals anything like the 100th-worst scandal of Trump, and while I don't agree with the politics of any of the others, one could at least make the case they were trying to run the country.

ajikeshi@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 19h (3 replies)

I think it illustrates the deeply servile attitude of Americans towards their politicians

i do not think that this assessment can be made...

but the statistics can be compared to their own earlier stats, and that also paints a bleak picture for trump

Hapankaali@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 19h (2 replies)

Does it? He's been around the 40%-mark throughout most of his first term and the current term so far. I don't think there is a reason to expect his approval rating to suddenly crater, unless a sex tape with him and Hilary Clinton were to be uncovered.

ajikeshi@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 14h (1 reply)

yep.. and the 40% were already the lowest rating in history iirc... so it just shows that he is doing worse now

It might be more about the dissent rising in the right-wing media ecosystem than people waking up ontheir own, but the dissent in the right-wing media system may be driven by falling viewership, so maybe it's the whole thing collapsing in unison. Last poll I saw had him down to 33% now.
