Ternus is allowing this to happen or he directed it to happen. Either way, he’s spineless because he won’t tell Trump to fuck off. If he changes course in the near future, then my opinion will change. But they kept the stupid name change of the gulf, they’ll likely keep this as well.
And to the people who would say “well what choice does he have?” That’s a form of appeasement. And I seem to remember some kind of history where that didn’t work out too well for business and government appeasing a dictator.
Trump has in the past threatened economic or financial penalties over minor, and major, disagreements
Trump is in his last term, so he likely isn’t concerned with the political, legal, etc. ramifications of his actions
Apple, as a company, still manufactures the majority of its product lines outside the US
Trump is still trying to use tariffs in the US to manipulate markets and force business actions
Either I capitulate and save Apple from potentially billions in fiscal pain and / or years of legal representation to fight said pain, or make this change and avoid all of it
The cost of this capitulation is mostly a PR / company image issue + plus dev time to implement the change, versus a very real monetary loss

Already replaced my macbook air with a pallet unit lifebook, and have my sight on the new framework laptops for the trackpad haptics and general principle of serviceability, even at the premium. I was an apple customer, I was always willing to pay for the premium to get a more consistent, robust quality experience. Framework really saw the writing on the wall, and I love it. Finally there are starting to be actually valid options for running Linux with the qol of apple hardware besides asahi.
On phone frontier I have zero clue where to go, but this is really just sealing the deal of me dropping apple there too whenever this one breaks. Motorola seems promising though, we’ll see..

The president has these companies hostage in terms of trade rules. They appease him or they lose out, and considering the state of big tech, they need friends, because the AI bubble has drained their supply chains of resources.
The thing is, Apple was the exception in terms of the “AI” circlejerkery. Not trying to fanboi for them - simply pointing out that they are nowhere near the proportional outlay that the kool-aid drinkers are, in terms of ML spend.
That's probably about to change with their new CEO too:

He reckons AI could be "the most consequential technology" for Apple because it could either help it maintain its lofty position or create a set of daunting challenges.
It's pretty likely that AI was the reason why Apple is changing CEOs in the first place, because they have been getting criticized for not being as hopelessly stupid about it as other tech companies are.

Termus is a hardware guy, and if AI is going to play a part in Apple’s long-term plan (and I agree that it will,) it’s going to skew heavily on-device. I don’t think we see any big AI changes from Apple just because Ternus is now CEO.
Dull but extremely profitable and successful as a company. Maybe their products are boring and there were a few flops along the way (HomePod, Vision Pro) but the transition to the M chips seems to have been successful and iPhone is still 21% of market share of the smart phone market.
Let’s see how the floppy phone is received when it comes out in a few days.
Yeah exactly, local AI is the long term future. Open weight models running on your desk are already good enough for a lot of tasks, and quickly getting better.
Apple are in a very good position here and don’t really need to do all that much other than continue to iterate on their existing hardware.
Compare that to Anthropic, OpenAI who must spend insane amounts to host their closed weight models, which seem to be unprofitable at any prices people are actually prepared to pay. As local AI improves these companies have no other business to fall back on. I know which company I’d rather be CEO of right now.
But at the very least, there's a good chance that Apple will start trying to shoehorn integrate AI in a lot of places. How much and where remains to be seen. Especially as a new CEO, there will be a lot of pressure to respond to all the criticism they've been receiving about their approach to AI.

Per the link in your screenshot OSM is following the standard of using the GNIS official name, while also keeping the displayed name as the common name until and if common usage on both sides of the border begins to reflect the official name in GNIS.
Precedent from the Gulf of Mexico/“Gulf of America” discussion as well as accepted OSM convention would suggest that once GNIS is updated (which it appears it is already), official_name:en-US=* should be added/changed to Lake America, but name=*left as is unless and until common usage on the ground on both sides of the border shifts to prefer the “Lake America” name (which seems very unlikely).
They have had the nick name 'cRapple' ..amongst a hundred others for many many years. Such names doesn't come by them selves, so not sure why you think they are not already one of the most enshittified and evil corps in the world - they always were !..

I am in no way an Apple fan. I think their computers are fine but grossly over priced and their phones are ass. I would say compared to many other big tech companies, the enshittifying isn't as bad. Those like Google and Microsoft for example. If I had a gun to my head and had to buy a new Windows laptop or Mac and not install Linux, I'm taking the Mac. That's not a positive review for them, it's an insult to Microsoft.
So take what I said and just assume it means that they are just getting worse faster, not that they good and going to get bad. That ship sailed long ago as you pointed out.
Grossly over priced compared to what though? I can't find a comparable ARM SoC on any non-Apple laptops to even compare to and the first gen Apple chips are still trading blows with modern Intel and AMD Chips depending on use case. We're now talking about the release of the 6th generation this year (though likely no Pro or Max chips this time).
A Macbook Air isn't really more expensive than a Thinkpad with similar performance.
I think they're overpriced compared to most laptops. Being ARM doesn't inherently make it more valuable. The newest cheap model is the first that I feel has been relatively fairly priced, but it still comes with less RAM than it should. "Grossly" may not be the best word, but I think they are overpriced based entirely on name recognition.
Like I said, I think their fine computers, just more expensive than they should be.

As part of an attempt to research more single-use devices (as a way to help focus attention and reduce distractions), I recently learned that there are a variety of interesting e-ink tablets and phones sold by companies like Boox. I’m starting to realize that there are really compelling alternatives on the market that offer different kinds of value than Apple’s visionless product line.
l’ve postured in the past about replacing my Apple products, but for the fist time I’m starting to feel comfortable with the prospect of doing with really interesting and different devices. My iphone is still pretty new, but my ipad (which i use a lot) is probably due for retirement this year. This latest cowardice from Apple may have just pushed me put of the walled garden for good.
By all means, buy a device whose operating system is designed by an advertising company who also sucks Trump’s cock. After all, Google caved on this before Apple did.

They have had the nick name 'cRapple' ..amongst a hundred others for many many years. Such names doesn't come by them selves, so not sure why you think they are not already one of the most enshittified and evil corps in the world - they always were !..

I am in no way an Apple fan. I think their computers are fine but grossly over priced and their phones are ass. I would say compared to many other big tech companies, the enshittifying isn't as bad. Those like Google and Microsoft for example. If I had a gun to my head and had to buy a new Windows laptop or Mac and not install Linux, I'm taking the Mac. That's not a positive review for them, it's an insult to Microsoft.
So take what I said and just assume it means that they are just getting worse faster, not that they good and going to get bad. That ship sailed long ago as you pointed out.

Grossly over priced compared to what though? I can't find a comparable ARM SoC on any non-Apple laptops to even compare to and the first gen Apple chips are still trading blows with modern Intel and AMD Chips depending on use case. We're now talking about the release of the 6th generation this year (though likely no Pro or Max chips this time).
A Macbook Air isn't really more expensive than a Thinkpad with similar performance.

I think they're overpriced compared to most laptops. Being ARM doesn't inherently make it more valuable. The newest cheap model is the first that I feel has been relatively fairly priced, but it still comes with less RAM than it should. "Grossly" may not be the best word, but I think they are overpriced based entirely on name recognition.
Like I said, I think their fine computers, just more expensive than they should be.

As part of an attempt to research more single-use devices (as a way to help focus attention and reduce distractions), I recently learned that there are a variety of interesting e-ink tablets and phones sold by companies like Boox. I’m starting to realize that there are really compelling alternatives on the market that offer different kinds of value than Apple’s visionless product line.
l’ve postured in the past about replacing my Apple products, but for the fist time I’m starting to feel comfortable with the prospect of doing with really interesting and different devices. My iphone is still pretty new, but my ipad (which i use a lot) is probably due for retirement this year. This latest cowardice from Apple may have just pushed me put of the walled garden for good.

Edit: Nevermind, when you zoom in it changes to Lake America.
I rarely ever use Apple Maps, I guess I’ll be using Wayz and Mapquest from now on.
