For anyone lamenting they don't have a Switch 2, or looking for OoT with QoL improvements for cheaper than whatever Nintendo's asking price is, there is a free PC port of OoT that will run as fast as your hardware can handle it without messing up gameplay speed etc, has a ton of switchable QoL features, and has mod support for using 3DS (and better) graphics/models. You can even use Master Quest's edited dungeons with all the benefits of the 3DS version.

It's called Ship of Harkinian. All you have to do is provide a copy of the game ROM.

Thank you for entertainment.

Never played the orig (never had a console after the Atari 2600), but as much as I've hears of the zelda-games, it's probably worth a shot?

A pirated ROM will probably do fine too? Before even thinking of giving nintendo a single Buck.

Thanks either way!

queerlilhayseed@piefed.blahaj.zone · 12 pts · 1d (8 replies)

I think so, I think Ocarina of Time earns its high esteem, and Ship of Harkinian irons out a lot of the QoL issues that make the original annoying, like being able to toggle boots without going into the menu.

After you finish OoT I'd recommend running Majora's Mask via 2 Ship 2 Harkinian as well. It's less popular than OoT but every bit as good, I think. I can't pick just one, but if I had to pick a "#1 favorite video game of all time", Majora's Mask would be a finalist. It's really good.

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d (7 replies)

Thanks man, will do! As there were tons of Zeldas: it's a finished story I can even follow without knowing any other title? I assume so, also assuming it's not just great gameplay but also great story.

wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Each game is meant to playable as a standalone thing, any direct storyline continuation from previous titles is covered in the game itself. Technically Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask are a pair with MM as the sequel, but either can be played alone with no real loss of context. MM does build on gameplay of OoT though.

It's not a spoiler to say that across the game series it's generally a plot about some reincarnation of the three central figures of Link, Zelda, and Ganon. There's often implied reincarnations of other characters too across multiple games, but that's mostly just callback fluff for fans. There's one game set first in the in universe timeline that sets up the impetus for the reincarnation cycle, and one game that splits the timeline into a few branches based off three different interpretations of the ending of that specific game.

The two main newest ones, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, are a two-fer as well, and are a new timeline or convergence of the split timelines depending on who you ask.

For a first time player, don't worry about it. Whichever game you play will give you what you need to know. Any understanding of the "grand series plot" just adds some extra oomph to scenes in later released games than OoT and MM.

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 1d

Perfect. Thanks for the detailed summary. My wife has a switch-something with breath of the wild. But I could never get myself to playing on this tiny thing or on a TV with 30fps or whatever the game offers (anything <80 gives me headaches). But the five minutes I managed to check it out, got my curiosity.

So, seems like I finally take a look into Zelda...

gartheom@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Most Zelda games are completely standalone and can be played in any order without really having any overlapping story. I think technically Majora's mask is a sequel to Ocarina of time but you don't need to play them in that order.

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d

Thanks man, that's all I needed to know. Nothing worse than playing a sequel first and only getting all references or so in hindsight.

captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1d

Each game can stand on its own. Nintendo is well aware that its audience will always include children playing their first Zelda game on their first console.

If any of the games refer back to a previous one, it will almost always be Ocarina of Time. OoT depicts the origin story of the series' main villain, so the boss fight at the end of that game marks the "Year Zero" for the series kind of the way the Battle of Yavin does in the Star Wars fandom.

Because Ocarina of Time involves time travel, it actually forks the timeline into three paths: Link is defeated, Link defeats Ganon and the timeline continues from there, Link travels back in time to prevent Ganon from rising to power in the first place. Later a fourth branch was established: Prequels, set before the events of OoT.

At least one game is a fever dream, at least two games take place in other, faraway kingdoms, at least one game can be interpreted as a fever dream or a faraway kingdom, and then Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom seem to be a reboot of the series because ToTK retells OoT's story and retells it wrong.

queerlilhayseed@piefed.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

There's an overarching storyline with some timey-wimey bits that I read at one point and have since forgotten. I haven't played all of them so maybe there are continuity assumptions elsewhere but both of the n64 titles can be played without knowing anything else about the series. MM complements OoT, but even they don't have to be played in release order to be appreciated.

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1d

Perfect! I'm curious to Zelda around for the first time ever. Who's envious? 😁

Thanks man!

saimen@feddit.org · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Haven't played it as well, but according to metacritic it's the best game ever:

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1d

Sounds solid. Hopefully it aged better than the 2600 games 😁

captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Okay so. A primer on the Zelda franchise:

Nintendo dislikes video games with stories, and they nakedly hate video game franchises with overall lore. Nintendo wants to make video games that are mechanically fun, "it's fun to jump on the thing." "It's fun to swing a sword ad the thing." "It's fun to throw a ball at the thing." Look no farther than their primary flagship franchise, the Mario series, for games with an excuse plot and highly polished primary gameplay loops. You can tell they truly, madly, deeply resent their secondary flagship franchise, the Zelda series, for being a more narrative driven adventure saga that attracts gamers who like deep overall lore.

Ocarina of Time is the most important game in the Zelda series' deep overall lore.

TallonMetroid@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

The best example of this mentality is the release of the Hyrule Historia timeline, immediately followed by Aonuma going "sure we're totes paying attention to the timeline for BOTW, so it's totes obvious where it should be", before eventually admitting that they did nothing of the sort.

captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 20h

To be fair to Nintendo, they painted themselves into a corner.

The first game was supposed to capture the feeling Myamoto had when exploring the woods near his home as a kid, so it has an excuse plot about collecting magical plot tokens on a quest to rescue a princess from a monster. It did well enough to get a very dissimilar sequel, because Nintendo also hates sequels. Myamoto always wants to do something new, he always resists making more of a good thing.

The third game, A Link to the Past, returned to the top-down dungeon crawl, but there was room on the cartridge now for some NPC dialog, so they wrote some backstory. And they got a little carried away becuase they wrote a creation myth, a deep backstory of the kingdom, a villain, and the design document of the rest of the series. The fourth game, Link's Awakening on Gameboy, is canonically a dream. It all happened in Link's head.

The fifth game, Ocarina of Time, is a prequel, they made a game out of A Link to the Past's fluff text. Fans went fucking nuts for it. The sixth game, Majora's Mask, is a game made on a strict one-year deadline, it has themes of constantly ticking clocks and impending doom. Write what you know, boys.

The Oracle games are side stories that don't effect the overall story, Wind Waker is the way it is because Myamoto went on a vacation to the beach and liked it, see also Mario Sunshine. Minish Cap is a distant prequel that takes place before OoT, and then Twilight Princess came out, made almost entirely to address the backlash against the cartoony art style of Wind Waker and to a lesser extent Minish Cap.

Nintendo sold the Wii on its motion control gimmick. Twilight Princess was a launch title for the game, but TP was designed for the Gamecube and they just mapped wiimote swipes to button presses. They took the rest of that long console generation to develop Skyward Sword with actual motion controls, and it was yet another distant prequel even predating Minish Cap.

It's the 2010s by now. Youtube exists, and fans are starting to make video essays about the sprawling, self-contradictory series and trying to form it into a cohesive whole. Detecting a merchandising opportunity, Nintendo releases Hyrule Historia, a nearly 300 page hardcover book that among other things contained the officially sanctioned timeline of events: The timeline splits into three separate parallel realities at Ocarina of Time, meaning some of the biggest entries in the series to date: A Link to the Past, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, had nothing to do with each other.

One 3DS sequel to ALttP later that largely takes place in yet another alternate reality, and they come out with Breath of the Wild, which is deliberately nowhere on the timeline and contains details established in all three split realities, followed by Tears of the Kingdom which retcons even Ocarina of Time out of existence.

TL;DR: The story of the Legend of Zelda series is best summed up by its main character, Link, when he said "Hep! Hap! HEEEEEYAH!"

Other people already answered your question, so gotta ask. What's your favorite 2600 game? I gotta go with Missile Command if I had to pick.

In hindsight I don't really know how we could justify paying 50€ for 10 pixels and two beeps 😁 but I'd say pacman? Was my first beside pong.

Still have the cartridges in my cabinet šŸ˜

ChocolateFrostedSugarBombs@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I play SoH all the time! It's awesome! But how do you get the master quest stuff in it? SoH doesn't accept the master quest ROM.

wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Last I checked you can import it when you first run it, or from an option menu somewhere, and it adds it to the options you have when starting a new save. I just followed instructions from the GitHub.

Apparently if you have a supported ROM (check here) you just drop it in the same folder as the exe to import it.

ChocolateFrostedSugarBombs@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Hmm, ok I'll have to take another look cause I tried that and it didn't work for me. I thought I had a valid ROM but maybe not.

k0e3@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1d

Thanks! I might play this until November.

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d

Another option is the Ocarina of Time 3D single screen hack for 3DS. Less messing around required.

popcar2@piefed.ca · 33 pts · 1d (15 replies)

Nintendo finally hired that guy!

Jokes aside, looks pretty good. The faces are throwing me off a lot though. They're so... weird. I was expecting something closer to breath of the wild than the semi-realistic style. I hope they adjust kid link, at least.

emb@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I thought the faces looked good, except young Zelda looked a little weird to me.

popcar2@piefed.ca · 13 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Looking closer I think all the child characters look really uncanny. They're all so stubby with huge eyes and it's just weird. Adult link and Ganon look great though.

sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz · 6 pts · 1d

Child Link looks exactly like the mini cherub statues my grandma used to have, and I really like that in the context of what he has to go through in OoT/MM and what we know of the Zelda timeline. Adult Link looks good though, I'm really happy they kept his and Zelda's noses like the OG instead of giving them button noses.

Uruanna@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Saria, Malon, the Kokiri shop kid, look decent. Young Link looks like a doll face with shimmering eyes and rosy blush cheeks and glossy skin, young Zelda has super weird eyes and nose proportions, but the other kids look a lot better with skin tones a lot flatter and less random shading, Saria's and Malon's eyes are much less jarring than Zelda. In the shot with Saria and Link facing each other at the beginning of Miyamoto's play demo, Link's face profile is glimmering from the lighting, and Saria's face is normal in the same lighting, they're clearly not from the same art / shading style.

popcar2@piefed.ca · 6 pts · 1d

Whenever someone tries to remake a Nintendo game in a realistic art style people would sarcastically say "Nintendo, hire this man!!!"

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/nintendo-hire-this-man

RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Probably CryzenX, who has been remaking OoT in Unreal Engine for a while now. Seems Nintendo didn't bother to try making theirs look any better than CryzenX's attempt, sadly.

MimicJar@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

The water on people makes them look a bit too shiny. I hope they adjust it before release. Otherwise I think they mostly look pretty good.

mesamunefire@piefed.social · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

The answer was right here over an hour before you replied...

mesamunefire@piefed.social · 2 pts · 1d

I see it now. Might be a sync thing with piefed.

k0e3@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1d

I kinda like child link. He looks so angry and unfazed all the time. A little smile when he picks up some rupees would have been nice but I like it. Zelda on the other hand is freaking me out a little. I think they're trying to make the characters look like the game art from the original. Like, western oil painting touch with big googly anime eyes.

audaxdreik@pawb.social · 32 pts · 1d (5 replies)

The Nintendo discourse cycle:

  1. Months of furious, irrational debate
  2. Releases to record sales
  3. 1 year later, no lasting cultural impact and most people agree that you should probably just play the original for the historical context (maybe the 3DS remaster, more debate ensues)
victorz@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I prefer their remakes, not gonna lie. Improvements to gameplay QoL here and there, good looking graphics, better frame rates(!).

And I grew up with NES and N64. I know what it was like. The slow frame rate is a big source of frustration for me, personally. But upgraded visuals are a big plus to me also.

MimicJar@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I think most people would agree with you, the remakes have QoL improvements that basically make them the best version.

Sure some people will always be nostalgic for the originals, but as remakes continue what is the original?

Let's look at Link's Awakening. If you played it on the Game Boy, it's a great game. But if you played it on the Game Boy Color it had the camera side quest and color dungeon, those were excellent. But if you played it on the Switch the camera side quest is now Dampe's Dungeon Creator.

I personally liked the camera side quest, but Dampe's Dungeon Creator was an interesting addition and I think it was cool to see.

victorz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Fully agree. Also the upgraded MUSIC with orchestral versions of all the classic songs. Ugh. So good. 😭🤤

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 22h

Jank has charm, but only if you played the original really.

The thing that is missing is older games were developed by small teams of like a dozen or two people, not 100s of people across multiple companies, as much of the work is outsourced. which is how pretty much every modern game is done.

wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 1d

At this point we already have the ridiculously extensible PC ports. There's no shot that there won't be mods to bring over whatever QoL this remake adds (assuming it's anything not already in the port) within weeks of release. I'll give it maybe a year or two for homebrew graphics mods to catch up or for someone to extract the new assets into a mod.

And there's no debate regarding the 3DS remaster anymore. You can just shove its graphics into the port if you prefer them and flip a few settings to toggle the changed behavior.

Plus everyone knows the best way to play is with the Beatles in OOT mods (seriously go search up the stupid fucking fever dream that is the remixed OST).

bigmclargehuge@lemmy.zip · 29 pts · 1d

If I can still parry Ganon with a bottle, I’ll be content.

A Nintendo game and a remake, Lemmy should love this! /s

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 22h (3 replies)

the amount of overly detailed shitting on it is something else. so many bitter weirdos just trying to find some absurd detail to hate on because... they have nothing better to do and no idea what non-bitter gaming people care about?

it will sell 20 million+

I'm honestly surprised how I haven't seen people ranting yet about how Nintendo is fascist and run by neo-nazis and this remake is proof of that.

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 20h (1 reply)

This is officially the first Switch 2 release I am sad because I don't have a Switch 2 and won't be able to anytime soon... at least this fall is stacked with a ton of other great releases. Hopefully next year ill be able to get one.

HalifaxJones@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

My hope hope hope is that someone much smarter than me figures out how to illegally get it onto a steam deck. That way I’ll be able to play as well. I have no plans to buy a switch unfortunately but really want to play this remake.

M137@lemmy.today · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

From what I've read it'll be a good while before there are any real Switch 2 emulators.

HeyJoe@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Yeah i read the same thing a while back. I was shocked when I read that it was way more different from the first to the point that it is emulating switch 1 games because its not compatible. So starting from scratch sadly.

cattywampas@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d (6 replies)

Looks awesome! Can't wait to relive my childhood. I love Ocarina of Time so much, but it hasn't aged well like pretty much every N64 game. Really looking forward to playing it again with modern quality of life.

M137@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 1d (5 replies)

I don't see that at all, they've aged great IMO. And that seems to be the opinion of most people as they're still loved and played so much.

iamthetot@piefed.ca · 6 pts · 1d (4 replies)

I grew up in the 90s and absolute adored my N64. OoT was my jam. Still my favourite Zelda game, though some others have come close.

Saying any N64 game except maybe Super Mario 64 has aged "great" is... a take, certainly. There's some very strongly rose-tinted nostalgia glasses on a lot of people, I think. And I'm not even just talking about the graphics. The polygons of the N64 era will always have a certain charm, for me. But my gods, but controls and the QoL features in general were not quite there yet in that era.

Goldeneye is another game that I think people mostly remember so fondly because of how they felt when they played it back then. Try playing it again today, after experiencing modern FPS QoL improvements, and uh... it's not great.

Revolutionary, cutting-edge games for their time, but they have not aged well imho.

Pupschism@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I feel like N64 games have aged well in the same way that NES games have aged well. They're both primative and compromised, and you either like the effect that has or you don't. I think most people would agree that blurry textures and low resolutions are pretty ugly for 3D and I see why, but the low detail looks uncluttered and easy to parse, and everything being so angular is a fun exaggeration which I like as its own style. I guess I have a pet hate for people talking like it's not valid as an art style, and I feel like that may have been how NES games were treated in the years after its obsolesence, now 8 bit pixel art is just funky and cool, and has been for decades.

I've been playing DK64 again with the new PC recomp, and now I can play it at 60FPS I have been appreciating the texture work, seeing it at stable framerates it looks so much prettier, a lot of the environments and some enemies have baked in lighting in the textures and while it's still low poly some stuff feels closer to PS2 vibes than N64, I'd say they took the visuals to a much higher level than any other retail N64 game I've seen

cattywampas@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 22h (1 reply)

I think graphics are less of a factor in how games age than the controls are. I had a friend recently ask me what Zelda game he should play for his first one. I recommended Ocarina of Time. He couldn't get past two dungeons. I said yeah the graphics are a little dated. He said I don't care about graphics but the controls are awful.

So my next recommendation for him was Link to the Past for a more classic Zelda experience, or Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom for a more modern and polished open world that doesn't follow the classic formula.

Pupschism@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 22h

Interesting! Yeah the early 3d era had very unforgiving controls all things considered, usually as a result of camera systems not reaching maturity. You sorta have to plan your movement around what it's good at and lots of newer age gamers aren't keen on what can feel like a big step backwards. They might like SOH better though! Much more customisable controls and camera

cattywampas@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 22h

Agreed. I can deal with low-poly graphics. It's the janky controls and QoL factors that cause games to age poorly for me.

To your point, I recently played a round of Goldeneye with some friends on an N64 with original controllers and everything. My god. It was atrocious. I couldn't believe we'd spent countless hours playing it back in the day.

myyass@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d (9 replies)

blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d (3 replies)

There's a theory that the sages died, in which case, lots of sad going around. Link of the gorons losing his dad is probably more sad than the kokiri losing a member. The zora princess dying would be pretty devastating for that people. Etc.

MimicJar@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I mean FWIW if the sages die as a theory then in one out of three realities the world is saved and they don't die. In another reality they die but as a sacrifice to save to world so, while sad, ultimately leads to a better future. And of course in the failure timeline... Well ok that probably is sad all around but that's only a third of the time at worst.

But the choice to allow that level of voice acting does not bode well. It adds up to a pretty consistent "oh that's gonna be bad" impression for me.

It looks like it's gonna be bad.

If it's unlikely to be better than the original, the only reason for it to exist is to make money.

Also what in garbage name is that awful voice acting? If there's better voice acting in WWF, your voice acting sucks piss.

I just want the people making games to care about us again and stop making things that are clearly, so blatantly, insultingly soulless garbage just to extract money from us and play on the weak minded who are slaves to their nostalgia and have no self control.

Stop giving people that make shit like this money.

Hard pass.

I like that you can control the camera with the right stick. But that's about it.

Fortunately Ship of Harkinian has that and more.

kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 18h

i do kinda like it

So it appears to be a 1:1 straight remake, but with modern graphics, better sound and probably some improvements to the UI.

I'll be honest though; I preferred how all the characters looked in the 3DS remaster. Oh well; I don't have a Switch 2 anyway, so it's not like I was gonna get this either way.

They mention that you can run around some of the areas that were previously just backgrounds in the original, so I suspect there will be some new content there at least. And a some cool new UI elements and ocarina accessibility stuff has been added if you're into that. Time will tell how similar it will be to the original, but either way, I'm feeling pretty excited for it!

That was Castle Town, there's also the Temple of Time entrance, there's not that many maps where the OG just had a literal JPG flat background. And we saw Castle Town in the demo, it's still a 1:1 map with the exact same town square, the same people, the same shops, and the same back alley, not a single change. Everything they showed had the exact same flat ground, flat walls, square rooms - only the Gerudo Hideout has ONE extra pillar stump that appears to go up to the cell you escape out of with the hookshot. Only Hyrule Field seems to have more variety and UE5 look in the hills and river banks and apparently a spot where the river kind of becomes a mini swamp area with Tektites (not sure which map that shot was in the trailer, could be the drained Lake Hylia)

It's looking like the maps will be 1:1 down to the pixel, only filled up with space in the area past Castle Town walking up the guard trail to the castle. Except Kakariko where they apparently flipped the Skulltula house and the construction spot with the cuccoo coop in the back, for some weird reason?

There's also a dedicated jump button and some other control changes. I have to imagine that will also mean some slight changes to puzzles and stuff that could have otherwise been solved by a dedicated jump button. Unless it will just not work the way I'm imagining it would.

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 19h (1 reply)

Adding a jump button in chess does not necessarily make it better.

iamthetot@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 18h

I didn't say that it does, nor was that really supposed to be the take away from my comment.

MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip · -1 pts · 1d

Looks dumb.

Edit: Link i mean. Why a different art style in a remake?

"This will be graphics in 2013."

Nintendo really is stuck in 2013, huh? Wonder when they'll get to the UE5 Slop trend... 2040s maybe?

"We kept the load screens in some areas to keep the essence of the original game."

No dawg, you did that because the hardware required a load screen there. The transitions would have been instant without the animated triforce if it was purely a style choice and not a hardware limitation.

Absolutely insane that people here still suck up to Nintendo. Holy.

ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I can't remember which game it was now, but I've definitely played some indie game that has fake load screens because I remember someone modded them out and asked the dev why they existed, and the response was that the dev found the instant transition between scenes jarring. It's not crazy to think Big N would do the same thing.

RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d

Transitions and a minor less-than-a-second pause are one thing. That's not what I am talking about.

The triforce animation instantly tells me that's a 4+ second loading screen. Nobody puts those in for stylistic choice. Even Resident Evil 1 style door transition screens are significantly faster than in the original RE when they show up in modern indie games. RE1 had them because of a hardware limitation, and the creatives decided to hide them with the door animation. Modern developers aren't usually so creative and they just shove a tiny animated sprite in the bottom corner, as seen here with the animated triforce.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug

Uruanna@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

No dawg, you did that because the hardware required a load screen there.

Have you heard of Breath of the Wild? The hardware does not require a loading screen there. There is a load screen because they separated the maps, so they do have to load the new assets between each screen transition, but splitting the map is the choice they made. They didn't have to split the map, they could have made one big open world-style map (except for the dungeons) and they chose not to, that's what they're talking about. They're not talking about how long it takes to load, they're talking about the fact that it's not one big map and it has transition screens, they didn't need to do that.

I'm bad at counting months.

Lmaoo

blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

We're already in the 9th month of 2026, so if they used the British date system, the game would be out by now.

Speiser0@feddit.org · 1 pts · 1d

Nintendo is a bit late with their announcement. But what has Britain to do with this?
