Ed Sheeran is a fucking coward that tried to say he can't have Macklemore talking about Palestine because of the children in the audience. The appropriate thing for someone with $400m in the bank would have been to cancel the tour, raincheck or refund the tickets and find decent venue owners for the next attempt.

Also, I'm pretty damn sure that Robert Kraft's stadium gets tax money for something. That should fucking stop immediately.

She’s exactly right too.

He had zero problem being political with Ukraine, when it was pretty universally accepted.

His problem isn’t politics, it’s actually having a backbone and standing up against any sort of adversity.

No. The proper thing to do is take the stage and repeat Macklemores words and cover the song Macklemore covered.

darvocet@infosec.pub · 22 pts · 1d (2 replies)

No that's how you attempt to save face now.

ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de · -3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

His contracts with all those venues may cost him far more than you'd imagine if he just doesn't show or drops out. The only telling thing he has done that makes him look really badly is his lack of any statements he could have made by now.

ayyy@sh.itjust.works · 20 pts · 21h

Oh nooooo, it would cost him? How will he eat tomorrow?

…better than children in Palestine, that’s for sure.

Triasha@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 44m

Take the stage and read statements from every act that canceled, call for an end to genocide, and maybe cover some of their protest songs and maybe then.

tell Kraft to such a dick, and if he Still gets paid because he is evil and has good lawyers then learn your lesson and never sign a contract that allows that again. Play in dive bars until the rich fucks cave.

Kraft also owns the new england patriots. Hate to give those athletes a splash effect of their owner's awfulness. But I also think thats the celebrity world for you. We have to make zionism as toxic in the business community as it already is in public opinion polls. BDS works.

Oh, the fucking irony...

Macklemore was vocally against Biden and proclaimed he wouldn't vote for him.

He didn't pick a side. I presume he didn't vote for Trump, but he sure convinced folks not to vote for Biden.

Trump is raping the US and the world right now.

Edit: Fuck anyone who doesn't oppose Israel's genocide.

kestrel7_7@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 10h (1 reply)

I mean, I was vocally against Biden (in 2020) in a sense of, “this guy is way too conservative on Israel and will probably lose re-election as a result if the conflict there heats up.” Not a very satisfying “I told you so.” I still voted for him in 2020, but I told this to everyone at the time, and with hindsight I was absolutely right. I still voted for Harris in ‘24, but I wasn’t surprised when she lost after all the Liz Cheney/“most lethal military” shit. The job of politicians is to convince voters to support them, not to ignore them, and Biden/Harris were completely out of touch with their own base. This is not the voters’ or Macklemore’s fault, it is Biden and Harris’s fault. Can’t even blame Trump for this one.

Sheeran posted this on IG:

I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The suffering and pain caused on both sides is a human tragedy.

But when a side has a 1000:1 kill rate and it's actively trying to remove/cleanse/genocide the other side from its foundation...

Hamas exists because Israel

phx@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 5h

Yes, Jewish people suffered greatly in the last century. Yes, there people in certain countries/religions who actively want to kill Jews or at least Israelis. Yes, Israel is a majority Jewish state.

But.

No, a past genocide does not give a free pass to execute a new one. No, murdering thousands in collateral to catch the ones who might be dangerous is not acceptable (not to mention the executions etc of obvious non-combatants). No Israel does not speak for all Jewish people nor have justification to excuse their behaviour/crimes as such. Also, yes the Israeli government/leadership is corrupt as fuck, uses war to dodge accountability, and is involved in a lot more terrible acts than "just" the ones in Palestine.

Honestly, when Mossad was blowing up pages and mobiles I thought that was great. It was strategic, effective, and we'll targeted at the actual terrorist leaders/allies rather than causing mass casualties.. they obviously have the capability to be much more surgical in their responses, so mass-bombings etc seem that much more like war/hate crimes. Doing this just creates more hatred, which leads to more terrorists and a continual cycle.

Felis_Catus_Domesticus@lemmy.world · -36 pts · 19h (12 replies)

Hamas exists because Israel

80 years of making the wrong political decision at every fork in the road.

Always on the wrong side of things.

Eventually that catches up with you. No matter who you are.

That is what we are seeing unfold in Gaza in our present times.

Walking out on the U.N. partition plan negotiations back in 1948 was a tragic mistake, and it's only become more disastrous with the passage of the years and decades since then.

No musician or singer poncing about on stage like an uninformed idiot before a crowd of even less informed idiots can change anything about those facts.

ProfThadBach@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 15h (5 replies)

Here is a simple take on this. I'm living here near a little town on my little half acre of land. Then some people move in beside me on their little half acre of land and they have support of the nearby town and several counties giving them the land and the house. It's not the best land in the area but they get it for free. Now I'm sitting here on my little half acre minding my own business and the nearby town and counties decide that hey we're going to give the people that just moved in beside you a quarter of your land and I go no you're not so I put up a fence they come in and tear it down and take it anyway. Now my neighbors on the other side of me they want to back me but they're afraid because my new neighbors have the backing of the local police and sheriff. So they just stick to their own business. Well I'm not very powerful but I'll go out there and I step on my old stolen piece of land and I put up a fence again. This time The neighbor comes out with guns and start shooting my cats tears down the fence and says well we're going to take a little more and so they take a little more. So we kind of settle into an uneasy fuck you across the fence for a while. Eventually my neighbor sees that hey my land is growing corn and stuff and it's nice and flat so they decide that that's what they want to so they decide one day they take down part of the fence and they move it another 50 ft intake my whole front yard now what do you think I'm going to do? I'm going to fight the whole time cuz I got nowhere to go. Then my neighbors decide they want my fucking house too so they come over start shooting my cats and throwing my shit out in the yard setting it on fire all what the help of the local police and sheriff. Now you tell me who the terrorist is?. That's a rhetorical question.

Political opinions from uninformed or biased celebrities no, but at the same time it's easier you somebody who already has a following to make that push in the right (or wrong) direction than some random nobody.. This is especially true in the US where people are being actively oppressed by their own government, as it's a significantly harder for ICE etc to suddenly disappear somebody famous versus a random "dissident".

lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 4h (1 reply)

My problem with the situation is not so much the celebrities speaking out. They can say whatever they want, it's their platform. My problem is with all the people listening and forming their own opinions around that. There are (or at least should be) better informed sources to learn about problems like this from. Media is fucked up too though so at this point I guess gather information from wherever you can.

phx@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1h

Yeah if you're solely basing your opinion on what some famous dude with no other credentials says then that's a bad idea. I still try and listen to the professionals, but they are being suppressed especially in the news. Still, it seems people are as much likely to migrate towards celebrities that seem to share their political views as they are to be informed by them.

If people are going to follow celebrities for politica informationl, maybe they would be better off to go with Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine). He at least he has a degree in Political Science, and a decent wit to go with it.

Yes, that's why it isn't a question at all but a way to pressure someone into saying what you want. It's a social dominance tactic employed by dark triad personality types.

Which are exactly the types the "righteous causes" attract, because it allows them to express their desire for social dominance by hitting people over the head with things that nobody sensible would disagree with in the first place.

"You're not a supporter of Genocide, are you?!" No you scintillating moron, nobody in their right mind is. And if they were, they wouldn't answer your question truthfully anyway.

They give you a false question which is essentially "You're not with the baby bunny killers are you?" And the only answer is no, and the only reason they ask you is to relieve some of all the aggression they're carrying around by forcing you to give the answer they want by posing a false question.

It's a socially acceptable form of psychological violence. And all it does is make healthy people distance themselves from political movements that otherwise have the right opinions, but are using them the wrong way. Because of their Egos, they're literally losing voters.

The one with the extinction countdown?

Citation needed

The one who mass raped/murdered concert goers?

Remove the last two words and that's Israel.

IDF's claims that Hamas committed mass rape and/or used rape as a weapon on October 7th have never been substantiated. Unlike the IDF themselves.

The one that lobs rockets to the other on a daily basis?

that's still the IDF.

You're comparing a few primitive rockets with no guidance systems a week to a systematic genocide deliberately targeting civilians including children and somehow arriving at the former being worse.

However its not like jews are the grand evil

Nope, "the jews" aren't "the grand evil".

The state of Israel, on the other hand, is a fascist apartheid state that has been inherently and enthusiastically genocidal for 80 years and categorically denies all responsibility for its countless atrocities

and were never attacked b4.

"Those who make peaceful resistance impossible will make violent resistance inevitable."

-- JFK, edited to fit

That's also why most of the international community shuts up about this

No. Geopolitical mafia methods from the US, Germany, the UK, and other allies of the fascist apartheid regime is why most governments don't dare point out the absurdly obvious.

They dont have a solution.

They have several, but all of the good ones require that Israel recognize that Palestinians are humans and act accordingly, which is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Of course as an artist you can point out problems without having the solution

That's literally the job of any political art.

When Picasso painted Guernica, nobody asked him to propose terms for a cease fire. Because that would be ridiculous.

Its easy clout for them.

Yeah, having some of the most powerful people in the world doing their best to take away your livelihood because you object to genocide is SUCH an easy mode grift! 🙄

Another reason to not like "taking sides" is avoiding potential aggravation of fans agains local jews

Again with the antisemitic conflating of "Israeli war criminals and other Zionists, most of which are Evangelical Christians" and "all jews" 🙄

Its the responsible cowardly and complicit thing to do.

Fixed it for you.

Yeah, that's why evangelical Christians are so gung ho for the Apartheid state:

the biblical prophecies they take literally require all Jewish people to be in the area at the time of Armageddon so that most of them can be converted to Christianity and the rest can be slaughtered.

| The one who mass raped/murdered concert goers?

Remove the last two words and that’s Israel.

They murdered concert goers too. There were hundreds of vehicles in the area of the music festival that had the roofs smashed downward by explosives from above. Hamas had no capabilities to inflict that kind of damage on those vehicles. It was reported by IDF officers that the Hannibal Directive was used to justify "shooting anything that moves" in the area that included the festival, and 14 attack helicopters fired all their munitions and resupplied and continued shooting at vehicles on that day. There were also attack drones used for similar strikes on vehicles in the area with missiles. There are also the reports of IDF tanks being order to shoot at homes in the area that contained captives. The IDF are likely responsible for many of the deaths of Israelis and festival goers.

https://www.middleeasteye.net/explainers/israel-war-gaza-what-hannibal-directive-why-controversial

Nof Erez, a former senior Israeli Air Force official, said that a "mass Hannibal Directive” was employed that day.

“There was crazy hysteria,” one source told Haaretz. “No one had a clue about the number of people kidnapped or where army forces were.”

Heavy Israeli fire was also aimed at a fence between Israel and Gaza. At first, soldiers were instructed that "no vehicles should be allowed to re-enter the Gaza Strip”, according to a security source who spoke with Haaretz. Then an order was issued to "turn the fence area into an extermination zone". At night, an order was given to "open live fire at anyone approaching the area [the fence]”.

In April 2024, the Israeli army published its findings regarding the death of Israeli hostage Efrat Katz. The report stated: "During the battles and the airstrikes, one of the combat helicopters that took part in the fighting fired at a vehicle containing terrorists - and which, in retrospect… also contained hostages… most of the terrorists operating the vehicles were killed as a result of the shooting, and apparently Efrat Katz."

The Israeli army also fired at a house at kibbutz Be'eri, where Hamas fighters were holding 15 Israeli hostages. Barak Hiram, a brigadier general, said in an interview with the New York Times in December that he ordered tank shells to be fired at the house as negotiations were now over. “Break in, even at the cost of civilian casualties.” Only two hostages survived.

This link shows a photo of many vehicles with roofs mashed downward, and attributes the damage to Hamas attacks, which really makes no sense at all.

The side that wants the genocide is the one committing the genocide

Simple as that

Waterpumpee@lemmus.org · -12 pts · 17h (1 reply)

Basically both are committing it at this point. Just Israel has more firepower through USA. Things would look worse if it was the other way around. See oct 7 to get a glimpse of that reality. Or Afghanistan to taste unchecked islamism hamas wants to implement.

JimmyMcGill@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 7h

Go and educate yourself please Look at some numbers And this didn’t start on October 7th. Long before that

qarbone@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 1d

What are you even talking about?

chunk6235@piefed.social · 18 pts · 1d

Which side is wanting the genocide tho?

It's probably the side that's been trying to empty Palestine for 80 fucking years. The whole state of Israel was founded on the ethnic cleansing of Palestine to make room for themselves.

But no, let's not talk about the slow rolling genocide ongoing since the end of WWII, we have to look at one little event in the last decade and pretend it's the start of the problem.

Fuck Israel and anyone who supports them. Especially through this mealy mouthed 'both sides are at fault' horse shit.

SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip · 17 pts · 23h (2 replies)

The Arab League put a peace offer on the table, under which Israel would withdraw to 1967 borders, and Hamas would recognize its existence.

Israel never addressed it. The answer is Israel. Israel wants genocide.

Waterpumpee@lemmus.org · -5 pts · 17h (1 reply)

idk about history that far back. there are internationally accepted borders which are not honored by israel. thats bad.

Oct 7 was a tipping point though.

SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 12h

Yes, we just found out that Netanyahu probably knowingly let it happen, seemingly to stay out of prison, and kick the long, slow genocide into a higher gear. Israel never wanted peace, that's why Netanyahu helped create and fund Hamas. It wants the land, without the people of Palestine living there.

Shema Yisrael, most of the "Local Jews" I know, think it's very clear Israel has gone way beyond what's reasonable or justifiable and are sick of being tarred with blood libel by people using their names to defend the Israeli genocide. They're also sick of being ghettoized by loud, wealthy zionists who are acting as anti-semitic against the diaspora as some of the the actual anti-semites.

Waterpumpee@lemmus.org · -6 pts · 16h (1 reply)

Hamas isnt eradicated. You'd just see the same shit happen every 3 years. Of course israel went beyond whats morally acceptable but thats what ed sheeran agrees on. Both sides.

GreenBeard@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 9h

And you just added another hundred years to how many times it will happen every 3 years. You cannot kill your way out of this. You will only make more threats.

https://www.snopes.com/news/2024/06/20/un-evidence-sexual-violence-hamas/

"The (UN) inquiry commission said Israeli authorities had not allowed its team to access victims, witnesses, the sites of the attack, or evidence related to rape, sexual torture or sexual mutilation."

"The commission said it had "not been able to reach a definitive conclusion" as to whether rape, gang rape, sexual torture or genital mutilation occurred because it hadn't been able to talk to survivors or witnesses or access the places where the attacks took place. The report added that Israeli authorities had actively "obstruct[ed] the Commission's access to information related to sexual violence" by not responding to requests for information or calls for testimonies, or by banning medical doctors from talking to the commission because they cited distrust about the commission's intentions towards Israel."

Tldr no evidence of any rape, Israel actively blocked UN attempts to gather evidence of it and at least two rape claims have been completely debunked.

Only Israeli claims of rape exist.

Waterpumpee@lemmus.org · -5 pts · 17h (1 reply)

Wasnt UN actually involved in financing this shit? UNRWA.

Plausible to not trust them any inch.

kreskin@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d

u/Waterpumpee: this is a well worn path for what used to be western civilization, and enshrined in the UN charter than Israel and the US both signed. Using violence for self defense has to satisfy 3 ideas for it to be legitimate. (1) You have to have honestly exhausted peaceful means. (2) It has to be due to a real threat rather than an imagined one, and (3) it has to be proportional.

  1. Palestinian civilians were never a threat.
  2. Nor were all peaceful means exhausted by Israel. They never honored what deals they made, going all the way back to partition, and they assassinate negotiators and journalists as a policy.
  3. And even considering Israels framing of Palestinians as a unified block-- where all Palestinians are somehow hamas killers, which is obviously a bankrupt racist idea and a war crime-- the violence leveled on Palestinians for the last 80 years has never been proportional to what Israel was then answered with. Israelis prided themselves on a 10-1 or 100-1 ratio of victims. If a kid throws a rock they kill the whole family.

Palestinians have a legitimate right to self defense and Israelis just dont have a leg to stand on in terms of a justification for using force. they really never have since the first 5 minutes of Israels existence when they launched the Nakba displacing 100s of thousands and murdering like crazy. Israelis are terrorists. Its really that simple, and the logic of it really cant be disproven.

The western world should be boots on the ground there, today, making sure the israelis respect the UN charter they promised they would honor when they signed the document, and containing them in the land they agreed to stay in when the country was started. They wont do it themselves so they need to be contained militarily for the good of the planet. This war with Iran is another front on their war, and no one else wanted it or gains from it.
