Notorious anti-trans activist melts down at school board meeting: “This is insane!”

Her reputation preceded her. As Bourne approached the lectern for public comment — shouting about “healthy, whole women!” — scores of district-area teachers got up from their seats and walked out of the meeting.

Bourne went ballistic.

“Ask those teachers to stop interrupting my comment!” she shouted at the meeting chair. “I want my time back! I want my time back!”

The former University of California staffer’s virulent activism began several years ago following her own daughter’s transition.

Ah, there’s the rub. Her oldest child is trans and she just couldn’t accept it. The article linked in the quote is very interesting and gives a lot more context.

It truly is what Yoda said: Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.

Radical_Socialist_t00t@lemmy.ca · 32 pts · 3d (5 replies)

She can be a crazed suffering wreck in jail but she has no business trying to lead anything. Bitch is actively hurting kids through discourse

rekabis@lemmy.ca · 13 pts · 3d (4 replies)

These are the kinds of people who make me actively cram down my own personal squeamishness surrounding the subject to actively try to be a better person towards trans and intergender people and anyone else who is non-binary.

Our civilization could be so much better without hate. Especially when it’s over variations of conception or development. People can’t do a damn thing about it -- as an AuDHD person myself, I know. I wish there was a pill that could utterly eliminate all symptoms of my ADD, but there isn’t.

BrokenToY@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 3d (3 replies)

Thankyou for acknowledging the 'squeamishness', better still being a good person and recognising it as whait is.

rekabis@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 3d (2 replies)

And that is literally all what it is - a physical squeamishness. That’s it. And no, a firm, professional business handshake doesn’t trigger it.

And I see two people going nookie on each other, I’ll yell at them to get a room no matter what the combination. I don’t need to see your tentacle-tongues in action, much less anything more risqué.

Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Same, that's why i dont get these people. I get it, queerness is not my preference, i also dont like pineapple on pizza. The solution is simple, i can just choose not to eat pineapple pizza and let other people eat whatever the hell they want.

rekabis@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 2d

i can just choose not to eat pineapple pizza and let other people eat whatever the hell they want.

If more of humanity could adopt this simple piece of philosophy, our entire civilization would be so much better off.

Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca · 13 pts · 2d

I seriously don't understand that. If my kid came out as trans, bi, ace or what the hell ever, I'd still love them. I can't imagine NOT loving them.

They're still doing the fucking dishes though.

hanrahan@slrpnk.net · 8 pts · 3d (1 reply)

be interesting to read an interview with her daughter.

nickiwest@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 3d

Did you read the SacBee article? It's not explicitly an interview with her child, but the reporter obviously quoted them extensively.

Hurt people hurt people.

I believe this in my core and will take it to my grave

Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 2d (4 replies)

I mean yeah but it's just so dumb to be hurt by your kid coming out as trans idk

whoisearth@lemmy.ca · -6 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Dumb to us.

There's so many complexities at play of which I don't think any of us can assume to know.

It's a shame regardless.

Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 2d

Prejudice isn't a "complexity". It's a lack of any subtlety or complexity: "X people era bad regardless of anything and that's final". Regardless even of being your own child.

Trust me, I understand wanting to make excuses for people and wanting to believe that there's a little good in everyone but sometimes there just isn't.

IamMoonPie@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2d

I’m sorry but comments like these are why we’re at where we’re at in my opinion.

Yes, hurt people hurt people, but that isn’t an excuse. If you violate the social contract, you lose the right to participate in the privileges of said social contract.

At what point to we stop giving these people passes for the sheer amount of violence and vitriol they put into this world?

If the majority of society finds this woman fucking stupid as hell, then I’d say it’s safe to assume, she’s stupid as fucking hell and this we deal with her appropriately.

Everyone has a right to an opinion, but that right doesn’t exclude you from the consequences of being a fucking moron.

Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d

I think I understand what you're saying even though you're getting downvoted hard lol.

No, i mean yeah it's easy for me to say that's dumb, but idk people literally can have brain damage from physical and/or psychological trauma -- i have no idea how that could manifest as phobias of any and all kinds.

Bryllyg@quokk.au · 146 pts · 3d (4 replies)

Poor crybully got upset people didn't want to listen to her bigotry. She is obviously not a healthy woman or she wouldn't be freaking out like that.

Good for the people that stood up and voted with their feet.

In their defense it is rather entertaining watching something so pathetic meltdown. Not that hard to do it to em in person but rare to see it happen in such a public setting, only way it could be better is if she went and got herself killed.

I hope one day she realizes she's never getting any of it back, and decides to spend it on things that don't ruin other people's lives.

rekabis@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 3d

The chance is there, but far too many of these kinds of people hate for life. Like toxic waste, they just get more and more vile with age.

Frankly, IIRC having a nonbinary daughter is what initially set her off. And if the estrangement of a child doesn’t bodily smack you across the face such that you reconsider your life choices, not much else ever will.

Most of the relationships she spent years forming — as a mom, community member, and university employee — have now dissolved. No one called her on her birthday last month, she said, through glassy eyes filled to the brim with tears once again. Attempts to connect with these former friends — by sending them controversial columns about gender identity, for example — are not received kindly. “We don’t want to hear from you,” Beth said a friend recently told her. “Don’t send us anything anymore,” said another.

she seems closer to the verge of emotional breakdown than she is to the verge of an insult.

The mom needs some impartial advice as to why everyone in her life cut ties with her, and why her eldest child being happy is driving her to the point of a mental breakdown.

Just another opportunity to post about the missing missing reasons.

EDIT: Quotes are from the sacbee article linked elsewhere in the comments.

CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social · 11 pts · 2d

Stupid people just can't quite handle the reality that treating real life conversations like their Internet echo chambers make you annoying even to people who agree with you, much less the people in your lives watching you try and hurt others.

dkppunk@piefed.social · 2 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Mothers like this tend to dig in and hold their ground when people tell them they are wrong about their children. For them, it’s not about love, it’s about control. They need their children to fit into these perfect little boxes they have constructed in their minds and if we don’t fit, it’s because there is something wrong with us or society has twisted us.

Source: I saw my mom do similar to my younger sibling. Now, my mother does not have a relationship with either of her children and I’m working on healing the damage she did between sibling and me. I’ll always stick up for sibling over mom as long as she behaves this way.

historicaldocuments@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I also detect notes of how the world will think of them that THEY raised a child that turned out to be trans or gay. The actual happiness of the child isn't a factor, but the appearance of the child's happiness is, because that's a reflection of the parent.

I’ll always stick up for sibling over mom as long as she behaves this way.

Good for you! It's a hard step and people don't always seem to understand how a child can cut ties with a parent. They never what those parent/child relationships are like leading up to going no contact with parents. Also, protip: she's always going to behave that way.

The first thing I thought of from looking at the parent's situation is how hopeless it is. Second thing was how Lily seems to be doing fine. Third was how similar to the ending of American Beauty the parent's situation is.

dkppunk@piefed.social · 2 pts · 17h (1 reply)

100% agree with you. Many of these parents just see their children as a reflection on their own character and morals instead of being proud of the person they raised.

Good for you! It's a hard step and people don't always seem to understand how a child can cut ties with a parent. They never what those parent/child relationships are like leading up to going no contact with parents.

Yep, I’ve had folks tell me I’m a bad daughter for not having a relationship with my mother. They lost their wonderful mom to cancer and would love to have their mom back so obviously I should want to have my mom in my life, but they fail to realize that not all moms are wonderful like their own was. Even after explaining my circumstances, I’ve still heard “but she’s your mom and you should talk to her” like that means I have not tried for a decade to talk to her about how she makes me feel and that I am required to put up with her wreaking havoc on my mental health.

Also, protip: she's always going to behave that way.

I’m fully aware of this unfortunately. She knows the things she has to do to have her children in her life, I’ve flat out told her what to do. She refuses to do something as simple as apologize, so she runs around telling everyone that her kids hate her for no reason. It’s the missing missing reasons factor 🤷‍♀️

My relationship with my sibling means far more to me than my relationship with my mother anymore. Sibling is a dork and can tease me, but ultimately is supportive and doesn’t judge me the way mom does.

historicaldocuments@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 7h

like that means I have not tried for a decade to talk to her about how she makes me feel and that I am required to put up with her wreaking havoc on my mental health.

Yeah. And it really does take that long. Usually the kid has to get out in the world and start swapping stories with other people, or get caught doing some damned Learned Behavior around normal people. After that the negotiation phase with the parent, and after that fails over and over again it's no contact. It's why I really hate the stories of people who got parentified...that's their whole life spent and the one constant is you can't get time back.

she runs around telling everyone that her kids hate her for no reason. It’s the missing missing reasons factor 🤷‍♀️

I wish it wasn't so common for it to need articles that well written to exist. Parent attempts to capture kid in a false dichotomy, and when they find a way out and escape control, they parent tries to control the narrative. In the happy ending the kid loses their parent.

Congratulations keeping some family.

For now... And you can add interracial marriage there too.

hemmes@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d

Yeah, kinda bizzare. Like you’re okay with one segment of LGBTQ+ but not others.

That’s the problem with anti-LGBTQ+ folks. They want it to be simple, cut and dry, but each person is unique in how they feel inside and out. All you have to do is support the people we love, our friends and neighbors. Don’t try to figure it out for yourself, just be there to support others through their journey.

Why is that so hard? (Rhetorical question of course)

Article spends too much time repeating the mountains of runny diarrhoea she spouted through her hate-filled mouth and not enough time talking about the opinions of the teachers who actually do care about children's welfare. At least they mentioned all the restraining orders on her for endangering children by doxxing trans kids.

I read the rest. It's the same sort of logic as "Love the sinner, hate the sin" shit. If it makes you uncomfortable, you really need to work on it. Interact with trans folks, get to know some. I'm not saying you need to want to date them or something, but it just making you "uncomfortable" isn't good and something you need to work on.
