SlurpingPus@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Yeah, basically all dancey electronic music was invented in the eighties-nineties, little remained to discover. Idm and breakcore already came about with the crazy structures. Dubstep is the one major missing link, but it's pretty straightforward evolution from dnb.

Fun fact: Scorn's ‘Greetings from Birmingham’ came out in 2000 (made by former Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris), but somehow the dubstep genre got entirely hijacked by the London people later on.

Robin Williams did Aladdin on the proviso nobody would do a remake.

Edit: Okay, I'm wrong. It happens. Sometimes a lot.

It was on the proviso that Disney approve that his voice acting - and the Genie character - were not used in any of the film’s promotional material. They did it anyway, hence why he didn't voice the Genie for the 2nd film voiced by Dan Castanella (The Return of Jafar), and came back for the third (King of Thieves) after a public apology from the Disney head at the time, and $1,000,000.

Scrabbling a script isn't something you can to while scrambling. You end up dropping way too many letters and your dialog ends up consisting of mostly two and three letter words.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1d

If back to the future was released today more than 1/3 of the population would root for biff and would say that the movie is “too political” and “woke propaganda”.

That was half the joke of the original movie. Biff got super rich off cheating at sports gambling and was rewarded for his sudden financial success with political authority, because the writers of the movie knew that's how Americans respond to anyone who appears to be financially successful practically overnight.

Biff was a critique of the people who elected Ronald Reagan. People who were saying exactly the same fascist shit as MAGA Trumpies today.

Then again, being OK with child rape by that same group of people wasn’t something I would have expected even 10 years ago…

You must have slept through the whole Catholic Sex Abuse moment. The sex-crimes apologists were crawling out of the woodwork. Guys like Ross Douthat made their first nut trying to defend the indefensible. Half of the Peggy Noonan columns were just her whining about anti-Catholic bias every time another child-rape story broke. JD Vance made his Catholic Turn right in the middle of the scandal, seemingly to suck up to the rich Catholic fuckwits gullible enough to believe he was going to protect them.

Before that, you had the string of scandals at the Texas Youth Corrections office. And the Abramoff Scandal, which had an often-undercovered element of child sex trafficking in the Marianas Islands. And, of course, Epstein himself got off with multiple slaps on the wrist across multiple administrations, thanks to his DC (and Mossad) connections. All these people and institutions retained conservative support in the face of a deluge of accusations and a torrent of new victims coming forward.

I think the difference is between how much things were chamging back then. The 50s were very different to the 80s. Technology changed completely and also the 80s were post-vietnam which caused huge changes in the culture. As for the 90s its all about digital technology and computers aaand so is today? Theres a reason for(at least for people arround me cause im gen z 💀) our grandparents being 'technology shocked' so much while our parents grew up sorta with the same stuff as us. Yes the access was different but my mom used to play pirated videogames on a computer at the library. That definitely wasnt a thing in the 50s. Thats my perspective at least. Also me being eastern european may influence this cause for us time and progression was locked for so long and the 80s freed all of it up.

1995-2005 was all about Chatrooms (AOL, IRC, AIM) and early social media. 2015-2026 is all about Chatrooms and social media being taken over by corporate interests, state actors, and political public opinion manipulation all posing as the AOL, IRC, AIM era.

left_is_best@feddit.online · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

The omnipresence of the internet and its perversion into a tool of the surveillance state would be the most shocking thing to a lot of people, I think. If you told an adult from the early 90s that all of their communications would go through one device that you kept in your pocket and that large corporations and governments were collecting data from it 24/7, they'd shit a brick.

I think a teenager like Marty from today would have a hard time navigating communication in the 90s as well. Like you had to get your hands on the Yellow Pages and use a pay phone or a land line somewhere. People weren't walking around with cell phones that you could just borrow, and you couldn't just look someone up with their name on social media and send them a DM. That's something that I think is much more different 1996 to 2026 than 1955 to 1985.

Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Today, the Internet is something which just exists and is deeply (forcefully) entrenched in our everyday lives. A teenager from today would have their mind blown that in 1995 you had to hook your computer up to the phone jack to access the Internet and it'd be difficult to do much without Google as the default search.

If they remake BTTF with a Cybertruck we should burn down the movie studio

bizarroland@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Yeah, remember Doc Brown's reason for choosing the DeLorean was because, "If you're gonna travel through time, you ought to do it in style".

Cybertruck is not style unless you are a brain-rotted seven-year-old.

Maybe a Rivian? You'd have to come up with a different issue other than the car not starting, like the difficulty of charging it or something.

As far as short-lived US brands with only one production model go, there are two choices in the recent past - Fisker Karma and Lordstown Endurance.

darklamer@feddit.org · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

In the category of "quirky and iconic but affordable sports car just a few years old at the time of the plot" there's probably only one obvious choice for 1995: Mazda MX-5

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Yeah, my thought was either a Miata or maybe go a bit more exotic and go with the Lotus Elise (first released in 1996).

darklamer@feddit.org · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Lotus Elise would almost have been a perfect fit, if it had been a little less expensive and released a couple of years earlier.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

As I recall, they used to be more similarly priced. Like I remember being flabbergasted at how cheap the Elise was compared to my expectations. I was expecting something more like $60-80k but they were like $30-40k. Miata was a bit cheaper but not by a huge margin.

Though it was a bit different because the Miata was more of a comfort sports car while the Elise was more of a racing sports car with bare minimum interior. Though that makes it sound even better for Doc Brown to tinker with because he wouldn't have to strip out as much to fit his extra stuff in.

Oh another option just occurred to me, though I don't recall the specifics, but wasn't John Titor's time machine mounted in a vehicle of some sort? His story timeline matches up fairly well with this BTTF remake idea, though iirc he left from the 30s rather than the 20s, and I think his wasn't closely integrated with the vehicle (like I seem to recall he had said something about swapping the vehicle it was in during his journey). Could update the method from flux capacitors to virtual black holes and even show that laser bending trick (where all other light mysteriously isn't affected by whatever is affecting the laser lol) as a satirical nod to whoever did that hoax.

Edit: I forgot the biggest thing! Cell phones weren't common yet. Getting ahold of someone while they weren't home or at their desk was unlikely to succeed.

vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1d

I feel like it'd be better to say that the broad cultural attitude and even aesthetics havent changed too much since the 90s. You could throw me in my normal clothes (Read weeb shirt and surplus camo jacket) and there's a pretty good chance folks would just assume I'm punk or grunge. While culture has shifted the broad attitudes have really only gotten bleaker if more socially progressive, but here's the thing the culture that existed when my grandmother was 20 and what existed when my mother was 20 is for more different than my mother and I at 20. Throw me back to 1999 and I would only look different in that I'm a paranoid asshole trying to murder his own father.

Note I'm 26, just using 20 as a baseline since it's pre 9-11 for my mom and 1976 for my grandmother.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

I think a big part of that is how the 80s/90s had inherited a lot from the 1950s that never really made it over the 2000s divide.

So what you had in the 1980s was 50s revanchism that dominated mainstream culture while a strain of alt-media was growing in the cracks. And now that old 50s/80s culture has been fully strangled by an outgrowth of 90s/00s culture which has become the cornerstone of modern media and culture.

FFS, there's a Hillary Duff revival going on. Won't be long until Britney Spears is rediscovered and we have another Bush running for the White House.

jpablo68@infosec.pub · 2 pts · 1d (5 replies)

yeah but in 1995 there was no broadband internet so going online to check or search for something right away was out of the question, no widespread cellular phone usage so no contacting anyone at any moment, no social media, I think the cultural change in regards of how we perceive the world as interconnected has changed

diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 1d

Well, if you count Lemmy as social media, I guess usenet is... tho it's for nerds in universities.

RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Yes. But we did have computers, basic social media, cell phones, and yes, we did have what constituted fast internet wirh DSL or T1 lines. No, it wasn’t “broadband” by today’s standards, but it was fast enough. Cable internet came out for consumers in ‘96.

Point being anyone going back to ‘95 would have little trouble understanding the world, and vice-versa. The big difference would be carrying the internet, CD collection, and movies in your pocket on a phone. I daresay there would be no small number of people who would prefer the ’90s to all the bullshit happening over the last couple decades.

Going from home PCs, early gaming consoles, cable TV, laser-discs, and a whole other shitload of changes technologically and societally between 1985 and 1955 IMO would be a lot more stark.

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d

The lack of smartphones and social media would be a huge change for a 17 year old today going to 1996. That alone would probably give them difficulty in navigating society.

jpablo68@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

yeah I'm talking about widespread use of all of that

RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

While you’re secifically right, that’s splitting hairs when compared to the wild differences betwen ‘55 and ‘85 - which is NO PCs, NO cellphones, NO internet, etc. and the point of the comparison was the differences between going back to ‘95 or ‘55 from the specified decades. NOT focusing on a single aspect of today vs ‘95 which, by comparison, is minor despite some 17 year olds having mental breakdowns over a cellphone addiction.
