I believe the responsible parties are: Lorn, less.people, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Death in Vegas, Shlohmo, Ramin Djawadi, and Gustavo Santaolalla.
Funnily enough, that was my most listened song from them! I got to see them do it live during the Spicy Meatball Tour, and his voice is fucking (fucking) POWERFUL!!!
They just went back on limited tour for 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue and I got to finally see them in concert. It was amazing. They also said that they were thinking about coming out with some new stuff.
What were your other top genres? Why do you think you've transitioned away from EDM? I feel like I've been slowly listening to EDM more over the years (and pop is always my staple), but this year R&B managed to sneak its way into my top five.
Why? Access probably. I get exposed to a lot of EDM from friends and I do really love it a lot. My favorite right now is Apashe.
On the flip side, I'm older. Radio is gone far as I'm concerned so my rock/metal taste have just kind of sat there until this year I got annoyed and for a while made a concerted effort to find new music I like. But now that list has sort of stagnated again. I just don't have the time.
Radio sucked, and continues to suck. But it did act like a kind of filter for the previous generations. With it gone those few of us who are still interested in new music have a harder time.
Ah yeah fair. I try to use Spotify's algorithms to my advantage to find new stuff I like, but I only seem to resonate with a new song it suggests every now and then.
Years back before Spotify I used to use Pandora. Idk if they are still around but their radio feature always seemed better than Spotify to me. It's been years though.
I was one of the first subscribers to Pandora. They actually emailed me and gave me 6 months free as a thank you for being the first x number of subscribers. It used to rule. But last time I checked it out I was a bit disappointed. Its like it got dumber somehow.
Unfortunate, but not too surprising I guess, especially because it's not popular anymore.
Pandora used to have the best radio feature, but it just didn't have a way to go back and play a song you liked. So I switched to Spotify and I guess most others did as well.
The main reason I stick with spotify is its generated for me playlists. Some weeks they can be pretty bad but a lot of the time they have songs that I end up adding to my liked songs. It's actually how I found the top 5th band on my wrapped 2023 and 4 of the 5 top songs.
If you haven't used the Playlist like discover weekly or the daily mix ones, I highly recommend trying them.
Spotify does have its own radio feature. Find a song and open the context menu and select Go to Song Radio. I use this sometimes but I don't think it works as well as the playlists.
Yeah I use the song radio all the time. Problem is it's not a true radio but it's just a pre-made playlist of a certain number of songs. I feel like with Pandora, whenever I started a radio it would morph over time and not just play the same 20 songs on repeat. Maybe I'm misremembering though.
I don't know for sure but I would guess Pandora worked the same, it just didn't show you the list. There is a feature in Spotify for it to continue playing similar songs once it hits the end of a list but I think the initial list is always the same for that song or artist radio.
I don't think the web player version of Spotify seems to have that feature. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things the web player lacks, but I can't download the app on my work computer.
When I'm at home I'm usually on my phoje on the mobile app which seems to have most features though.
I’m actually having fun with the DJ feature as well. Sure it need some tuning, but I like how it switches up genres and plays different types of music.
Does the "DJ" talk a lot? I saw that yesterday, but when I clicked it, they went on for a while to introduce themselves, and I noped out of it because listening to a DJ talk is exactly why I avoid listening to the radio anymore.
“He” talks the most the first time since he introduces the concept. Then be seems to jump in every 5ish songs to switch up the genre, like “let’s go back to 2020 and play some of your favorite songs” or “here are some songs from when you were growing up”.
Reasonable! I usually need music to focus on work. I also have music going any time I'm driving, for sure. And sometimes I even have it going when I sleep--although, I don't think I did a lot of night music in 2023. Definitely more 2022. I think my number was in the 180s last year, maybe because I've been watching more Youtube videos this year. I should cut Youtube out and go back to music--probably a healthier use of my time lol.
Bit of a mixed bag. Arctic monkeys and fall out boy makes sense as top 2. I think my music taste varies wildly enough that Katy Perry and P!nk must have just sneaked in there over other artists.
I really didn’t listen to much music this year. I guess not engaging in my main hobby that let me listen to music as much really hindered my listening time.
I listen to PolarisRadio every day on my way to.work. 273 plays for Sea of Stars. I like most of his works. Gorillaz is also in that Playlist but I don't get that far every day driving.Sabaton and Voltaire are straight choices I hit play on. I'll listen to their new albums day one.
I usually listen to everything just a little bit.I also listen to untracked mixes on youtube like JAZZ PL concerts and 飛行船の上のシンセサイザー弾き
Of course there isn't good way to share wrapped in English. My genre is Japanese Jazz Fusion.
Top artist is The Tedeschi Trucks band, no surprise there. Best God damn band on tour right now. Listened to them so much this year as I got tickets to one of their shows this past July.
It was a good year of listening for me.
Edit: after scrolling through the comments, pretty cool seeing very few repeated bands.
The scene is still good, I'm not clued up on the Vicks but from searching no, it's not common at all now but rolling is still 90% of the crowd. Went to a Stu Allen memorial show last week with my mates dad, the 50s crowd still got it, glow sticks and whistles.
More Anjunadeep these days for me. Jody Wisternoff (Way out west) and James Grant (Jonos Brother). They luckily do a lot of shows near me so it's quite available but we travel for them.
Never been to a tritonal event or artist show actually, quite new to me these.
It's an old joke referencing some TV show or movie, I forget. A Reefer Madness sort of vibe but for MDMA and the whole scene. "Kids smearing Vicks on each other, eating drugs that take ice cream scoops out of their brains," or something along those lines, real pearl-clutchy. My friends and I thought it was hilarious and started leaning into it. "Oh yeah, huge scoops, and we slather the Vicks on with trowels."
Takes me back. Spin some glow sticks for me the next time you go. And stay hydrated!
Bit of a pet peeve for me that the recap slide at the end doesn't give the artist for the names of the songs. There are many songs out there with the same title.
I've been listening a lot of a song called "Box of Bones" recently for example, but mine isn't from a pop punk band.
Did the same thing with King Gizz this year as I did QOTSA in 2020. Find them around September, listen to them almost exclusively for the rest of the year, and end up in the top 0.5% or better
Both have Steps as my favourite artist which mostly isn't surprising. The top song on the two differ, though - for Spotify it's Samo mi se spava by Serbian singer Luke Black, and Apple Music it's Twisted by Australian prog metal band Voyager. Both artists entered Eurovision 2023, though Twisted wasn't the entry.
Awaiting ListenBrainz's which'll be released in the new year, as that will have some of the most accurate data, as it includes things from my local library
Genres listened to in total: 154
My genres:
Chillhop
Gaming EDM (I guess? I'd just group it to general EDM)
Lo-Fi Beats
Jazz
(Japanese) vTuber music (weird to call this a genre)
In regards to vTuber music: Since it's very diverse I list the artists instead:
Hololive (incl. Korone, Bae, Marine, Suisei, and loads other artists)
Partly related: Hatsune Miku (Deco*27 and others), Anime OP/EN music, Touhou.
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness because I saw him at his birthday show last year and love his vocals.
Let You Down by NF sneaks into every playlist cause I got emotional damage. Lol
Looks like all the top songs are Disney. Moana, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog.
I'm just wondering if that first one is from Tron Legacy? If it is, I'd have to say the daughter has better taste in music. 😆
I listened to cell dweller for the first time in years yesterday. It was rough, but def brought back memories. I saw Gary Numan, FLA and ministry last year haha. Going to check out your other suggestions. Thanks again!
My 10month old son has always just shut up and listened whenever sound of silence comes on (the disturbed version, he doesn't care for S+G it seems) and that was my number 1 by a distance I think.
367 listens, so more than daily, I don't mind though as it's a proper banger and I could listen to David Draimans voice forever.
I dont axtually know how spotify calculates the songs, but I believe its a mix between minutes spent listening to the song and how many times the song was played
(If you're wondering why mine looks weird it's from YT Music instead of Spotify)
I always find with these recaps that I don't remember listening to one specific song more than others, and I'm constantly surprised by what the top 5 are. That being said, I usually just listen to the personalized mixes, so maybe part of it is the algorithm deciding that I really like a song because I haven't skipped it 🤷
Top artist: Cautious Clay (pop/r&b) (top 0.05% of listeners)
Top song: That's Hilarious by Charlie Puth (pop)
To be honest, I don't think my top song is really standout compared to the others in my top. But I had a rough day and played that song on repeat like a zillion times for some reason.
Some bangers from my top five are:
#2: How I Want Ya - Dawin Remix by Hudson Thames (pop/electronic)
And
#5: Want You in My Room by Carly Rae Jepsen (pop)
I randomly got into "she's kerosene" by the interrupters this year. Saw it on a very amateur bmx clip reel and couldn't get it out of my head all year.
Having said that, it didn't make my Spotify wrapped list.
I'm in the top 3% of listeners for Sabaton, but my most played song was 59 times Another Love by Tom Odell. And I'm an alchemist because I create more playlists than other users. Overall I listened to 44 genres.
Also, as for current favorite artist/album/song, I would say:
Favorite Artist: This one is hard to decide because there's a lot of candidates, but in terms of "will I like probably anything they release?" probably Young Medicine.
Favorite Album: CCL Dive by Cityfires. This has been my favorite album for a long time. Make sure to listen to it with headphones or in a quiet room, because it has a lot of quiet parts and small details.
Favorite Song: daisy chain by wishlane, jacob geoffrey & defsharp. Absolute banger, love the energy and I definitely listened to this on repeat for a while when I found it.
I use Apple Music, but my top artist was AJR. 14 of my top 15 songs were by them. Over half my listening time. Their just resonate with my life right now, and I can’t get enough.
My second my played was Snails House. I love the bops they put out!
I have to say, Fia (the German representative) had the song with the best message, and I liked her backstory a lot. The song she submitted is called "Ohne Worte" (translation: without words).

Top song is Comin Around by Andrew Duhon.

Tritonal and Above & Beyond! Are the kids still smearing Vicks on each other? Good times.
LUHG_HANI@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y
The scene is still good, I'm not clued up on the Vicks but from searching no, it's not common at all now but rolling is still 90% of the crowd. Went to a Stu Allen memorial show last week with my mates dad, the 50s crowd still got it, glow sticks and whistles.
More Anjunadeep these days for me. Jody Wisternoff (Way out west) and James Grant (Jonos Brother). They luckily do a lot of shows near me so it's quite available but we travel for them.
Never been to a tritonal event or artist show actually, quite new to me these.
LongbottomLeaf@lemmy.nz · 2 pts · 2y
That's good to hear. I always had fun there.

I've got two, from Spotify and Apple Music.

My genres:

Their singer died on November 17 of prostate cancer. He had it since 2020 but only revealed it to the fans on 2022.
I've seen them almost a year ago at the Centre Bell in Montreal (around 20k seats amphitheatre). It was the most memorable show I've ever seen.
They are a band that has been running for something like 25 years. Multiple generations have grown with them. The Quebec is still mourning him.!

I always find with these recaps that I don't remember listening to one specific song more than others, and I'm constantly surprised by what the top 5 are. That being said, I usually just listen to the personalized mixes, so maybe part of it is the algorithm deciding that I really like a song because I haven't skipped it 🤷
