That is the insane part. Honestly I thought so. I literally read an bias as fuck biography of that guy, believing that I would find some competency. Even they failed to spin the yarn in that way. The most positive spin was effectively "musk is a good promiser/beggar".
Context, it was in the early Tesla days, in which people hope he would kickstart a change.
I struggled through it with two new laptops last month. The command prompt method didn’t work anymore. I was however able to bypass after disconnecting the Internet a few times during the setup process to make it fail at trying to create an online account. It’s like it will finally give up after two or three times and allowed me to setup a local account finally.
It sure looked like an option last time I tried, but it was more hassle and I was just trying to create a guest account for a friend, so I didn't bother.
Also Microsoft backed off on the intrusive AI stuff about 5 minutes after announcing it because there was such an uproar. The funny part is I was working for Microsoft at the time, and you could tell the leadership really thought consumers were gonna love it.
For anyone reading this that has to install Windows, when you get to the point where it asks you to log into a Microsoft account, hit shift+F10, type oobe\bypassnro into the command prompt and after it reboots select "I don't have an account"...
I would still maintain that Linux is a better option though.

And if you want to go down the rabbit hole of "PC is personal computer" good luck defining what a computer is without defaulting to what society thinks a computer is, because technically your phone is a computer that is for your personal use. Your phone is a PC. In a sense so is your TV and your gaming console and the steam deck and possibly even your fridge. Maybe even your car.
Save yourself the headache and use PC as you understand it while accepting that others have a different meaning for PC.
This is because long ago there was the Apple Macintosh and the IBM Personal Computer. So things that were "PC compatible" were not Macs. So the term got applied to Windows stuff. It's not used very much now, but that article is from 2007.
So while it's correct terminology to say Windows are PCs and Macs aren't, it's pretty outdated and another example of his failure to be recent on tech trends. I don't think I've used the term PC to mean Windows since 2020 at least. Probably longer.
I might be dumb. PC vs Mac is a common way to differentiate. Laptop vs stationary is a common way to differentiate. Isn't "PC Laptop" a pretty descriptive and non-overlapping way to unambinguiusly distinguish the item?

You can press SHIFT+F10 keys to open Command Prompt.
Execute OOBE\BYPASSNRO command then.
After this, setup will reboot the computer and after reboot, you’ll get a new option I don’t have Internet or Continue with limited setup to skip the Internet requirement.
I did this when installing Windows 11 for a friend, was also my first experience installing Windows 11 as well. Having to open a command line during the installation process really nullifies the "Windows easy" and "linux hard" stereotype.
It's not "your choice" if you have to hack the installer to do it, something 99.99% of people wouldn't even understand if you tried to explain if to them.
Also a single command line does not compare to Linux
Outside of l33t h4kzors distros like Arch, Linux OS installers have not required any command line invocation for at least two decades. Just enter your username, wifi info, etc and click next until it's done.
And it boots to a fully updated install if you connect to the network in the wizard, unlike Windows which might take as much as a full business day to update itself depending on the age of the install medium

I've had 2 instances where the Shift+F10 method didn't work on a Windows 11 Home edition install. 1 was a brand new HP laptop I set up for a friend. It came with a bunch of bloatware so I created a bootable USB and reinstalled the OS. It didn't pull up a command prompt when I tried the command no matter what I did. The second was at work. I accidentally let it update during the setup and afterwards it accepted the bypass command, but still never gave me the option to log in without a Microsoft account. I have a feeling they're phasing that option out for Home.
At least Pro has the domain join option. Still it sucks that Bitlocker gets set up automatically and associates the key with the first Microsoft account you sign in with.
If you buy one in s mode, then you can't run 3rd party programs or particular built-in ones. That includes command prompt, which is why shift-f10 didn't work. It's ok as you can get out of it by, going to the ms store after logging in as an admin!
We now see the problem with s mode in the out of box experience.
You're right, it was in S mode. I had to create a junk email address to unlock it. The original account was an admin but it wouldn't remove S mode without an MS account.
Finally got a chance to watch this video. I don't know enough about how Windows works to have found the exploits they did, but I do know it well enough to understand what they did and found it hilarious. It's more practical to actually get out of S mode, but making everything run despite still being in S mode was a good laugh.
Yeah, it's technically already home version, just in a special mode, and it's trivial to switch out of if you don't mind connecting your Microsoft account to the computer. Just log into the Microsoft Store and "install" the switch out of s mode "app". It's a bit of a pain to get rid of it without adding an account, so if you want to do that, it's really easier to just do a fresh load that will automatically pick up the home edition license the laptop already has. Why not just use a disposable account just for switching laptops out of s mode? We tried doing that, but Microsoft locked the account after we'd logged it in and out of a dozen odd computers. Now we just use the customer's own account if they have one (and actually know their password), or reload Windows if they don't. You'd be amazed at the number of people buying cheapo S mode laptops and then being surprised when they can't load some other software they really need. (Or maybe you wouldn't be amazed if you've worked with the public before. Point is, a lot of people do this.)

Nitter (the software) recently had an update, as long as you just provide a valid Twitter account, you can easily run an instance. The previous versions of Nitter used an unauthenticated GraphQL API, but it was shut down at some point. I still don't know how xcancel.com and nitter.poast.org managed to survive though.

Buuuut I've been on Debian for the past year with absolutely no issues. I think that, for 99% of computer users, the whole "rolling release" design for an OS is more trouble than its worth. Give me a stable release that I can get used to for a couple years, then one big update at a time - little updates every day that unexpectedly change and sometimes break things just make the experience of doing things more finnicky and unpredictable.
That was also the final straw that made me leave Windows, for the record.

He is probably using a company laptop which by default requires a Windows account to be used, if it’s his personal account that’s another story but this is also how Microsoft tools are built. You don’t like this way instead of complaining just switch to macOS or Linux
Lots of people in this thread calling him out for not doing the bypass, and I really don't want to be defending him, but he did try too. The issue was that the computer automatically connected to a nearby open wifi network so was not presenting the no network option. I'm completely sure that no bad actors are going to take advantage of this fact to infect new machines.
I mean, it apparently just needed to be de-selected, but my comment was more about how bloody concerning it is that Win11 devices just connect to whatever nearby open wifi network they can find to phone home.
Well yeah, Microsoft sucks from many standpoints, including privacy and security, but he's the last person to be complaining about any of it for a multitude of reasons.
Yeah, okay, sure. But call him out for the legitimately stupid/awful stuff he does. This thread is full of folks talking about how easy the bypass is, when I've looked up that bypass for one of my own devices and nothing said shit about fuck when it came to automatically connecting to open wifi networks. Which is a concerning escalation in privacy issues from Microsoft to me.
I can't speak for them, but that is not why I posted it. I posted it to show that "genius" Elon both doesn't know how to do very basic things with computers that non-beginners could figure out and that he has a problem with other people having access to his data, but he has access to the entire federal government's computer systems which have all sorts of personal details about virtually everyone in the U.S.
I am pretty sure he uses Linux because he said something once that seemed linuxy. I forget what. Does he seriously use Windows or is this more "edgy humor"?
With Linux so easy to use, it's hard to understand why someone would use Windows unless they had a really low intelligence and struggled to learn anything new (like they had a brain disease, developmental issues, etc.) or if they were using it it in an enterprise or virtual setting.
Leon might have tried Linux once. But he was famously fired from PayPal for trying to switch the codebase from Linux (which he didn't understand) to Windows. And Windows ME or some shit. Not even the somewhat stable version that was also out at the time.

It's mostly a marketing gimmick, same as people who say "tablet or iPad".

Most people don't care and create an MS account anyway. And they don't have to use any command line.

It came with a bunch of bloatware so I created a bootable USB and reinstalled the OS. It didn't pull up a command prompt when I tried the command no matter what I did. The second was at work. I accidentally let it update during the setup and afterwards it accepted the bypass command, but still never gave me the option to log in without a Microsoft account. I have a feeling they're phasing that option out for Home.
At least Pro has the domain join option. Still it sucks that Bitlocker gets set up automatically and associates the key with the first Microsoft account you sign in with.

S mode!
If you buy one in s mode, then you can't run 3rd party programs or particular built-in ones. That includes command prompt, which is why shift-f10 didn't work. It's ok as you can get out of it by, going to the ms store after logging in as an admin!
We now see the problem with s mode in the out of box experience.

You're right, it was in S mode. I had to create a junk email address to unlock it. The original account was an admin but it wouldn't remove S mode without an MS account.

You can unlock by editing the registry.
Tricky part is doing that in SMode because regedit is blocked.

Finally got a chance to watch this video. I don't know enough about how Windows works to have found the exploits they did, but I do know it well enough to understand what they did and found it hilarious. It's more practical to actually get out of S mode, but making everything run despite still being in S mode was a good laugh.

Well, it's always pre installed on the cheapest laptops. Yeah, there are ways around it still, but it's not quite as easy as the old bypassnro.

Yeah, it's technically already home version, just in a special mode, and it's trivial to switch out of if you don't mind connecting your Microsoft account to the computer. Just log into the Microsoft Store and "install" the switch out of s mode "app". It's a bit of a pain to get rid of it without adding an account, so if you want to do that, it's really easier to just do a fresh load that will automatically pick up the home edition license the laptop already has. Why not just use a disposable account just for switching laptops out of s mode? We tried doing that, but Microsoft locked the account after we'd logged it in and out of a dozen odd computers. Now we just use the customer's own account if they have one (and actually know their password), or reload Windows if they don't. You'd be amazed at the number of people buying cheapo S mode laptops and then being surprised when they can't load some other software they really need. (Or maybe you wouldn't be amazed if you've worked with the public before. Point is, a lot of people do this.)

Nitter (the software) recently had an update, as long as you just provide a valid Twitter account, you can easily run an instance. The previous versions of Nitter used an unauthenticated GraphQL API, but it was shut down at some point. I still don't know how xcancel.com and nitter.poast.org managed to survive though.

I followed a guide on YouTube to install windows 11 without an account. It also helped me disable a lot of crap.
Despite what people tell you in here Linux isn’t an amazing alternative if you don’t want to spend time setting it up to be a replacement.
I’m a software engineer and when I leave work I don’t want to be solving more problems.

My fedora install nuked itself after an update
Corrupted the btrfs filesystem and would only mount as readonly. Trying some "fixes" completely fucked it.
Meanwhile had zero issues with windows updates and even was able to get the machine booting fine to an older windows install on the drive

The same thing happened to me on Pop OS.
Buuuut I've been on Debian for the past year with absolutely no issues. I think that, for 99% of computer users, the whole "rolling release" design for an OS is more trouble than its worth. Give me a stable release that I can get used to for a couple years, then one big update at a time - little updates every day that unexpectedly change and sometimes break things just make the experience of doing things more finnicky and unpredictable.
That was also the final straw that made me leave Windows, for the record.

He is probably using a company laptop which by default requires a Windows account to be used, if it’s his personal account that’s another story but this is also how Microsoft tools are built. You don’t like this way instead of complaining just switch to macOS or Linux

Lots of people in this thread calling him out for not doing the bypass, and I really don't want to be defending him, but he did try too. The issue was that the computer automatically connected to a nearby open wifi network so was not presenting the no network option. I'm completely sure that no bad actors are going to take advantage of this fact to infect new machines.

This thread is full of folks talking about how easy the bypass is, when I've looked up that bypass for one of my own devices and nothing said shit about fuck when it came to automatically connecting to open wifi networks. Which is a concerning escalation in privacy issues from Microsoft to me.

I can't speak for them, but that is not why I posted it. I posted it to show that "genius" Elon both doesn't know how to do very basic things with computers that non-beginners could figure out and that he has a problem with other people having access to his data, but he has access to the entire federal government's computer systems which have all sorts of personal details about virtually everyone in the U.S.

I am pretty sure he uses Linux because he said something once that seemed linuxy. I forget what. Does he seriously use Windows or is this more "edgy humor"?
With Linux so easy to use, it's hard to understand why someone would use Windows unless they had a really low intelligence and struggled to learn anything new (like they had a brain disease, developmental issues, etc.) or if they were using it it in an enterprise or virtual setting.
It must be a joke.

Leon might have tried Linux once. But he was famously fired from PayPal for trying to switch the codebase from Linux (which he didn't understand) to Windows. And Windows ME or some shit. Not even the somewhat stable version that was also out at the time.
