Charlie's only shot at college was to debate new adults with a decade worth of adulthood less than he. He debated with a 10 handicap.

"debate"

shawn1122@sh.itjust.works · 29 pts · 330d (4 replies)

Came across a few posts saying he was a compelling debator.

Saw the post of him debating on school lunches. At one point, in response to being asked if he supports free school lunches, he calls the student stupid and says there is not a single child starving in America.

If this is what we consider compelling debate we're cooked.

He died doing what he loved, dodging questions.

ICastFist@programming.dev · 8 pts · 330d

I imagine the majority of his "compelling debator" façade came from careful editing of the videos

Ashenlux@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 330d

Yep. And that's most of these right wing "debaters" do. They talk fast, with as much authority and confidence they can muster, try to make people feel stupid for not seeing the world the way they see it, and then moving on before they get called out for the bull shit they spew.

Laura apparently wants her supporters to end up like Charlie Kirk.

These arguments always remind me of this quote from The West Wing: "Education is the silver bullet. Education is everything. We don't need little changes. We need gigantic revolutionary changes. Competition for the best teachers should be fierce. They should be getting six-figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge for its citizens, just like national defense. That's my position."

ClownStatue@piefed.social · 6 pts · 330d (4 replies)

Yeah, it was a pretty abrupt wrap up wasn’t it. It was there and then… gone. Be interesting to see how Sorkin handled the trump White House in that context but he’s probably been apoplectic through it all, also not sure how much he enjoys writing absurdist scenarios (even if they’re taken directly from real life)

echodot@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 330d (2 replies)

It's still not a very good strategy long term though. They want comfortable lives and they won't get to have comfortable lives if their enemy is the one making all the innovations.

octopus_ink@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 330d

These people are motivated by greed and power more than critical thought though. One of them would have succeeded by now if not.

(I know it looks like Trump and such are succeeding right now, but I do think their foundation is showing some cracks.)

My view of their plan is pretty similar to what's been expressed here. In summary - they really think they can "breed out the weak" and vilify education to the point where they have a nation of semi-educated workers who will fill factories or pick up guns as needed. They'll lose some hundreds of thousands every year to preventable disease and hazards that we used to try to prevent, but they don't care because they will have let the educated generations die off, and the younger ones will be denied birth control and encouraged to pump out babies.

They will replace all the scientists and the educated folks who built everything we have with AI, and that's how we'll keep up with the rest of the nations.

It ain't going to work, mind you, but 100% that's where they are driving the bus. We're more likely to end up like Russia, where everything they build is synonymous with being absolute trash and the only thing we have giving us world power is legacy, size, and resources.

_core@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 330d

"Don't feed the trolls" sounds great in theory, and for your own personal sanity it makes sense. Unfortunately ignoring people like this doesn't make them go away though. Instead, the lack of any pushback to their vitriol and lies just pulls in even more people and makes their message stronger.

brucethemoose@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 329d

You can push back.

Just not on their turf.

If you were in Nazi Germany, would you push back in a forum personally set up by Hilter to make you look like provocateur then cut you off? No. That would be stupid, and even worse, validates the platform with your presence.

You go somewhere else. And bring people with you.

THIS is the fallacy!

Twitter is not a fair forum, it's an engagement -> profit engine. It does not show posts fairly. The entire premise of it being a tug of war between narratives like some free speech dream is a fat lie.

Even if 'this generation' were Mensa narrative makers, that'd feed the troll engine all the better, like how I've seen people say they stay on Reddit to 'fight back.' The only game to play is to the bottom. The only way out is not to play.

I semi-disagree. I think lack of exposure (or exposure to falsehoods and stereotypes) is behind the racism and bigotry of a great many people. If someone is 75 and has been a horrible bigot their entire life, it's going to take something massive to change that, sure. But if someone is 20 and raised by magas in a small wyoming town, learning all the stuff you don't learn from magas in a small wyoming town is likely to make a difference, IMO.

Speaking for myself, I can look at a bunch of areas where my biases were challenged effectively and continuously just by exposure to folks from whatever group I was biased about in the workplace or school.

I'm pretty sure that's the real reason why racists have always been so pro-segregation. It's pretty tough to convince your kid all the black folks are lazy and stupid if the smartest student is his class is a black kid or he's got a strong crush on that pretty black girl who sits by him in science lab, or his best friend at school is a black kid.
