Yay, Disney hate is finally mainstream! I'm basically inline with popular opinion by virtue of maintaining my firmly held beliefs I developed decades ago and held even when it was inconvenient and unpopular!!! It's my time to shine for the short period of time this transient fad plays out!
Kidding and current events aside, Disney media has given me the creeps since I was a kid. The popular cartoon movies just felt like propaganda. I'm not saying everything Disney hits that note, but so, so much of it does.
Then I started meeting Disney adults and, while I understand that Disney has no control over how these people act and choose to represent them, all I can say is OH MY GOD. Crazy cat lady, bizarre couple who live in Christmas themed home decor and wardrobe year round, homeless person who's still got money for meth and thinks he's Jesus vibes all wrapped up into one with sprinkles on top.
Then they took over local news stations and started presenting "Disney" as news -- entire segments dedicated to Disney intellectual properties disguised as "breaking news" kind of bullshit.
And finally they wrapped their slimy tendrils around the neck of super heroes and Star Wars and squeezed until blood poured out every pore while the corpse dried out and rotted.
So, thank you, I've had enough, and at least now maybe a few more people will see what kind of monster they've been supporting all along and decide to sever the ties.
It’s a bit funny and sad that the most innovation I’ve seen from Indiana Jones and Star Wars has been from video games - a cinematic medium they contract with, but don’t have as much twisted control over.
When Cal picks up a “crossguard” in Jedi: Survivor it was at first a moment of sequel cringe, but then they had the idea of having him wield it like a two-handed bastard sword where it has more weight, and it gives it such a cool identity.
I said this in another thread but it’s frustrating as hell as a non American that your citizens are being vanished into gulags based on their race, free speech is being silenced, your rights are being pissed on and all your tax money is going to weapons and billionaires. And the best you guys can do is a Disney boycott.
disney bought up so many streaming, media companies. they owned FOX, but not fox news(which is still under murdochs control), and hulu+. ALSO BBC, which is why they have been PROMOTING charlie kirk.
Omg I went to cancel Hulu and I was paying $26 a month for the ad free package. It had dismey plus and ESPN too. I don't watch any of those! I told my wife I was cancelling and she was like yea fuck those fascists.
Tongue-in-cheek question, serious answer: Stop watching entirely, deny the company your attention, and erode its ability to control our culture. Use the time to learn DIY skills, and meet people IRL.
Probably preaching to the choir here on the Fediverse, but...
It's hard to remove Disney from every aspect of your life even when not consuming media. For example, I play Magic the Gathering, and the producer of the game is Wizards of the Coast, owned by Hasbro. Wizards of the Coast has secured licensing deals with properties of many media franchises including Marvel. Now, I personally try not to purchase licensed cards from those sets. but when cards are released quarterly and the supply chain to small game stores is choked out to only give them the newest stuff and the oldest stuff no longer in print but still in supply, your choices become, buy the latest licensed boosters and boxes or buy the old stuff you probably already have enough of.
My shop hasn't had Tarkir: Dragonstorm (a set that released in Q2 of this year) since the Final Fantasy set launched several months ago. And since then, Edge of Eternities (an nonlicecensed set) has released and even that set is hard to get hands on. So my options right now are, Final Fantasy cards, cards from a year or more ago, or prepurchasing Spiderman cards.... Even my hobbies are being canabalized by the megacorps.
It's exhausting, and I want to just enjoy my card game. I hate that a huge part of my enjoyment of this hobby has been sniffed out (cracking packs with friends) has been turned into something that feeds all the monsters at once. And since it became a finance hobby for people who don't care about the game at all, just what they can sell the product for aftermarket, this thing I love has become harder and harder to enjoy.
All that said, please nobody tell Disney about Disk Golf............
Yeah. Still using Plex since I am old head with a lifetime subscription I got for $50 on sale a decade ago. Though if not I hear jellyfin is the best now.
Use Unraid for my NAS and definitely going to upgrade to lifetime after I've used it for over a year now. Makes things super easy but it's still Linux underneath so I can do whatever advanced thing I want when needed.
A nice NVMe cache drive, basic CPU, MB, some sticks of RAM, and a few multi TB HDDs and you can say goodbye to all streaming services for life.
Friendly reminder, boycotting Disney isn't just a few streaming services. Everything from Spiderman Underoos to the Lego Millenium Falcon should be avoided like the plague. No Aladin on Broadway, or Theme Parks.
When their partners start to complain and their residuals take a hit they'll hear you a lot more clearly than just a drop in subscriptions.
If for some reason you can't cut them off, try to cut back. Disney made 91 billion in 2024, if everyone cuts back by 10% you can carve nearly 10 billion dollars out of their revenue stream.
I kind of feel bad for Americans who were/are very invested in American culture. A lot of people survive on consumerism, so now they have to decide if they want to change their habits (choose ethics and morality) or continue doing their thing (because they’re in denial/need a distraction). It’s not looking good…
There’s zero chance this turns Americans away from consumerism. Hell, even in threads calling for boycotts most people are saying they’re going to still consume Disney products, they just won’t pay for it.
I consume like a motherfucker but I still cancelled Disney Plus and Hulu literally just now. Dropped my MAX/Hulu/Disney bundle and picked MAX back up because from what I understand they had nothing to do with this.
I'm kinda annoyed. My sub expired a bit before this and I didn't renew. I was looking at whether to do so this month, but now I don't get to tell them why they aren't getting any more of my money
Walt Disney was a fascist himself. Also there are rumors he was into young children so the fact that Disney now is choosing for the pedo fascists is very fitting.
And I saw a documentary thing about how Alice in Wonderland was a fantasized story of him having a love obsession with an underage girl or something but that was a long time ago and it has never been confirmed.
So I asked about a month ago about boycotting Disney in a completely different thread. I'll ask again. Should I start boycotting Disney the same way we should be boycotting Amazon and Target and all these other companies kissing Trump's ass?
History channel?! Where the hell do you expect me to watch pawn stars and American pickers knowing ripping people off like the assholes they are. If that ain’t some real American history.
Even without a usenet indexer, public bittorent gets you pretty far.
Also funny how some of the nicest container stacks I've been seeing are fully decked out pirate ships with upwards of 20 containers handling various things. Some dude even published his insane 10k USD 320Tb plex server build on pcpartpicker with consumer priced server grade tech like 28TB HDDs and ECC RAM.
Finally, the left and the right find one thing they can agree upon. Columbia (the sportswear company) just sent me an ad promoting a Disney event and a Disney line of clothing and I sent a reply that probably no one will see, but I told them they can fuck off with that.
Xactly. Tis a scam. His grandpa was a pimp & grifter. So was his dad. Matter o' fact, his g'pops certainly made his fortune next to Ruzzia. Odd. Something something, rhymes with Krasnov.
From Wikipedia (Jimmy Kimmel): On September 17, 2025, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live indefinitely after Kimmel's remarks regarding the MAGA movement's reaction to the assassination of Charlie Kirk drew threats from FCC chair Brendan Carr and an announcement from station owner Nexstar that its ABC-affiliated stations were dropping the program "for the foreseeable future".[5]
The Trump FCC chair started it by threatening ABC's license as well as licenses of ABC affiliates...Nexstar/Sinclair said they wouldn't broadcast the show, then ABC bowed to pressure and said the show was cancelled indefinitely.
Disney is worth $200+ billion, and if they fought this in court, the first amendment is clearly on their side. But like Paramount before them, they are complying in advance.
Disney have supported the gop far more than not, i wouldnt hold your breath of them fighting agains tthem. they also started dropping "pro-diversity" stuff from thier shows too.
marvel hasnt been pushing out good shows/movies, you arnt missing much. even if you really wanted to see it, i would just look for youtube clips, and save you the trouble when it comes out.
My joke was more or less on that direction really.
After endgame, I don't recall anything really good. Wandavision might have been the best, but not great. Thunderbolt's was a decent movie for a flight, but hardly a recommendation.
I have skipped almost everything, so I might have missed something. Fantastic four had OK reaction I guess, might check it out eventually.
Actually, Spiderman homecoming was good, even if it was nostalgic fan service basically. Maybe deadpool 2, but I don't know it that counts.
To those of you that are canceling Disney+ and looking for animation alternatives, might I suggest anime, (Japanese animation, some based on comics.) Give crunchyroll a try.
Boycotts aren't effective alone.
Neither is one person deciding to vote for the other party.
Telling your boss 'Uh, no, I'm not going to do that, that's illegal and immoral and probably a war crime or something' is not actually effective.
Sure, I could switch providers or go sailing the high seas but that won't eradicate fascism, so why bother?
So I guess the only solutions are
1, carry right on supporting, validating, and participating in any bad practice or evil that comes your way,
2, some hitherto undiscovered way to Stop Evil in one fell stroke, or
3, engage in change as a process, on the understanding that the bad guys are hopefully not the only type of people who can work together to get shit done over a longer timeframe than 'now or never'.
I'm going for 3, because frankly if there aren't enough decent people in my community to put in a fraction of the effort the dangerous idiots are putting in, it's not worth saving.
And I can't be bothered to do the whole 'judging myself, my family and friends and neighbours and country and society and finding it wanting' at the moment, so it's easier to just do what little good I can, wherever I see the chance
I already don't even have a Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ account. So if you are trying to say I should participate and cancel my subscriptions I literally can't.
My point still stands: Boycotts barely do much at all. They can be a small boost to a political project if they are done alongside something more substantial but otherwise whatever they accomplish is essentially washed away in the noise eventually if its the only thing done.
And at worst, they can be a form of slacktivism. Satiating one's feeling that they need to contribute to a cause without meaningfully actually doing so.
Better methods would be: attempting to induce shame in those working at Disney and getting them to resign, harassing their CEO, spreading propaganda about the content of the company itself that actually hurts their bottom line, and .
Hell, merely promoting alternative content would even be better than a boycott. Then you are satiating people with something other than Disney slop for who knows how long so they don't even have to make the decision of going without all while promoting smaller companies/organizations or creators.
Sorry I don't know what have Disney done in particular. I've already seen something on it but *I can't understand what happened. *
I'm sorry for my ignorance.
Hoping someone will answer,
Jimmy Kimmel made a comment about how the MAGA gang was spinning the shooting of Charlie Kirk as a politically-motivated assassination by "Democrats", when the shooter themselves was part of said MAGA gang and was not, in actual fact, a Democrat.
In response, the FCC threatened ABC and encouraged TV broadcast stations to exclude their programming, and so ABC indefinitely suspended Jimmy Kimmel's show in response.
I don’t personally think cancelling subscriptions will do anything, they honestly do not care because they have millions of other people subscribed to them.
I honestly hate the hive mind of “we have to cancel our subscriptions to boycott”, let people enjoy their shows.
It can have a limited impact on the short term but I agree that it won't do much. I don't recall a "boycott giant corporations movements" that changed anything recently. Money comes first, and a mega merger to become even more monopolistic is much more important than a handful of angry customers. We're at the age of enshittification and fascism. See Reddit as an example. Or Imgur. Now the same thing is happening but with another giant media.
It's like people boycotting oil companies because gas prices are too high. They inevitably fail because there's still plenty of people addicted to oil and gas willing to pay anything to get it.
Hell, in the current climate, cancelling or boycotting over this could put you on a list of people disagreeing with the government, and get you harassed or imprisoned.
I know people on this service are big advocates for pirating and shit like that to not give the big corporations any money. I’ve learned that rather quickly in the short amount of time I’ve been here.

Reaching a real person at any of these companies' call centers will cost the company real money.
(It can also hurt the statistics of the call center employee, so it's morally wishy-washy)

New Disney Plans announced Make Disney Great Again

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 321d
Didn't this come from Sinclair media, the notoriously right wing, massive media conglomerate?
I'm not sure how it works, and not saying Disney isn't partially to blame.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_stations_owned_or_operated_by_Sinclair_Broadcast_Group
Sinclair is the "ABC Affiliate stations".
From Wikipedia (Jimmy Kimmel): On September 17, 2025, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live indefinitely after Kimmel's remarks regarding the MAGA movement's reaction to the assassination of Charlie Kirk drew threats from FCC chair Brendan Carr and an announcement from station owner Nexstar that its ABC-affiliated stations were dropping the program "for the foreseeable future".[5]
nothingcorporate@lemmy.today · 16 pts · 321d
The Trump FCC chair started it by threatening ABC's license as well as licenses of ABC affiliates...Nexstar/Sinclair said they wouldn't broadcast the show, then ABC bowed to pressure and said the show was cancelled indefinitely.
Disney is worth $200+ billion, and if they fought this in court, the first amendment is clearly on their side. But like Paramount before them, they are complying in advance.

Thanks for putting that concisely, my brain isn't working so great this morning

Disney have supported the gop far more than not, i wouldnt hold your breath of them fighting agains tthem. they also started dropping "pro-diversity" stuff from thier shows too.

marvel hasnt been pushing out good shows/movies, you arnt missing much. even if you really wanted to see it, i would just look for youtube clips, and save you the trouble when it comes out.
Railcar8095@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 320d
My joke was more or less on that direction really.
After endgame, I don't recall anything really good. Wandavision might have been the best, but not great. Thunderbolt's was a decent movie for a flight, but hardly a recommendation.
I have skipped almost everything, so I might have missed something. Fantastic four had OK reaction I guess, might check it out eventually.
Actually, Spiderman homecoming was good, even if it was nostalgic fan service basically. Maybe deadpool 2, but I don't know it that counts.
Harbinger01173430@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 319d
I pirate their series because it's cheaper.

To those of you that are canceling Disney+ and looking for animation alternatives, might I suggest anime, (Japanese animation, some based on comics.) Give crunchyroll a try.
might want to check out these alternatives also

No wonder they are so shit now.
HalfSalesman@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 320d
Boycotts on their own are not effective. They are more of a sprinkling addition to a full fledged program that includes more heavy duty tactics.
Lastangel@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 319d
Boycotts aren't effective alone. Neither is one person deciding to vote for the other party. Telling your boss 'Uh, no, I'm not going to do that, that's illegal and immoral and probably a war crime or something' is not actually effective. Sure, I could switch providers or go sailing the high seas but that won't eradicate fascism, so why bother?
So I guess the only solutions are 1, carry right on supporting, validating, and participating in any bad practice or evil that comes your way, 2, some hitherto undiscovered way to Stop Evil in one fell stroke, or 3, engage in change as a process, on the understanding that the bad guys are hopefully not the only type of people who can work together to get shit done over a longer timeframe than 'now or never'.
HalfSalesman@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 317d

* I'm sorry for my ignorance.

That just about sums it up briefly.
untorquer@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 319d
Additionally, ABC is owned by Disney.
Probably obvious but the idea was missing a key component assuming it's not common knowledge

devedeset@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 320d
They bought all the free media, stuff that gets broadcast over the air. A lot of local news TV channels are Sinclair.
Hard to boycott when it is basically broadcast to everyone by default, including to things like Roku

I don’t personally think cancelling subscriptions will do anything, they honestly do not care because they have millions of other people subscribed to them.
I honestly hate the hive mind of “we have to cancel our subscriptions to boycott”, let people enjoy their shows.
canajac@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 320d
No idea what protesting is hey. One person who writes a complaint equals many others who don't do it but have the same reasons to boycott. Look it up.

pedz@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 320d
Icedrous@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 320d
I know people on this service are big advocates for pirating and shit like that to not give the big corporations any money. I’ve learned that rather quickly in the short amount of time I’ve been here.
