So I see this game. Let me sum up what I actually see:
- Reviews are mixed: not a great start
- Requires 3rd-party account: fuck that
- 60 euros base game: expensive, especially when the game has mixed reviews
- 175 euros DLC's: are you fucking kidding me? On top of 60 euros for the base game, there's another 175 fees for content?
- purchasable CoD points: so pay to win?
And they don't understand why people pirate, run away from AAA games and go for indie games instead.
This is just a random example. I've quit playing COD after Modern Warfare.
To end this positively: I recently started playing Necesse which is really nice, and I started playing an old time favorite again after a long time: World of Goo. Both worth my money :)

Take a look at the reviews, and find this insanity on the top:
Thanks, I'm out.

So in theory.. you can not even play single-player campaign because of kernel level anti-cheat + internet connection. Even if Wine/Proton would allow you to start the game.
cron@feddit.org · 33 pts · 286d
True. According to protondb, it is not possible to even start the game.

From time to time I'll still look at their steam page during sales, because I'd like to play a blockbuster single player FPS where I can mindlessly mow down bad guys, with good story and production value.
But the price point and reviews always turn me off... Do you have a good alternative to recommend?
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 285d
If you want a CoD game, pretty much any CoD up through Black Ops 2 is still decent, but only if Activision actually let's the game go "on sale". Halo games have a fantastic story (up until 5 at least) and the Master Chief Collection is usually on sale for $10.

You are missing the most important issue. It only runs on Windows!
TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip · 26 pts · 286d
To be fair that icon doesn’t mean much of anything cuz you can just force compatibility in Linux and use proton, you just gotta manually do that in properties.
This is probably windows only because of kernel level anticheat though so it probably still holds up.

Wtf with what reason xD The whole AI integration into basic things supposed to do basic things is stupidness of a dystopian degree. A bed with AI? It's just a mattress. Why, just why. An AC just needs to cool to a certain temp. Why does it need AI, to get a relationship with it? What's next, tables with AI?

I haven‘t encountered a Steam game that doesn‘t run on Linux so far. They very likely exist but anti cheat, third party account requirements, or an online connection while playing don‘t have anything to do with it as far as my games go. Same goes for GOG, Amazon Games and Epic Games on Heroic launcher. It just works as far as I can tell.
Klajan@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 285d
You are lucky then. If you play lots of multiplayer games you are bound to encounter one that doesn't work.
Most modern Call of Duty and Battlefield games do not work for example.
According to areweanticheatyet.com only 40% of Games with Anti cheat work on Linux...
CosmoNova@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 284d
It would never occur to me to install CoD or Battlefield in the year 2025. So yeah, Guess I am lucky for having standards. Hopefully more people will realize there are other fantastic multiplayer games out there that run on a Steamdeck for example.

Not fully true. Yes a lot of games run on Windows.. But a lot of them also run on Linux, in some cases even Native, in other cases using Wine/Proton from Valve. See: https://www.protondb.com/
A lot of online pvp games do work under Linux as well. But then again.. AAA games are the most problematic.. because they just stuck, and get ignored by the devs/publishers. I'm looking at you EA!

Bro the CoD ship sailed years ago. They just don’t innovate and release the same shit year after year. Buy something else. I’d recommend Factorio.
mellow@lemmy.wtf · 26 pts · 286d
Quite the leap going from CoD to Factorio tho. 😅
dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 286d
I had an intermediary of Minecraft and really gravitated towards the automation, I then saw Factorio on YouTube and was like damn this looks sick. I’m a software developer so it tracks that I like to solve problems.
Recently downloaded Satisfactory though to give that a try.
I also believe I aged out of FPS games as I was pretty above average all my life but just don’t have the time nor inclination to keep grinding anymore to stay really good at them. All about solo games now and just vibin.
brognak@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 9 pts · 285d
Only because I had to explain the differences recently and it's top of mind:
Satisfactory - Main goal is efficient usage of limited amount of throughput. Resource nodes are static, and efficiency is the name of the game. My favorites usually end up a spaghetti mess of belts, everything being fed the correct amount of inputs and all outputs being accounted for.
Factorio - Main goal is THE FACTORY MUST GROW. Your factory need more input to run 100%? You could figure out how to optimize everything that comes before it, orrrr just slam more out. Resources are randomly generated, and while you can exhaust deposits, there's always more on the horizon. Explore. Expand. Exterminate. ENLARGE FACTORY. Usually ends up in a beautiful mess of a factory with bots zipping around, and the power flickers every now and then when the biters think they are more powerful that explosives/concentrated beams of light.

This kind of thing is why I dont get excited for steam sales now. Oh, 50% off Recent AAA Game? Haha, yeah, half off the base price, but the entire game is DLC now and each of those is still full price, and there's a dozen of them.
warm@kbin.earth · 8 pts · 286d
AAA is just cash grab, they haven't been good or innovative games for a long, long time now. They are very good at marketing to the masses though and they have the pricing tiers laid out perfectly to extract as much money from people as they can.
They start off with their massive price tag like $70-80, plus the deluxe editions for $100-120 for any suckers who want a fucking extra skin. Then after a couple months when sales slow down, they put it on sale for like 20% off, then a couple months more, its like 40% off and so on. DLC has kind of fallen off, as they get people stuck in the battle pass and cosmetic buying loop instead (people are crazy).
If a AAA game looks interesting to you at all, you are literally best just waiting a few months or more, it's a win-win, you either buy it it's actual value or you get the reviews that its a disgusting broken mess or was completely over-hyped (it's these last two 99% of the time).
Steam sales are for getting them older games a bit cheaper, good indie games are worth their price tag multiple times over honestly so unless you are tight on money, I'd support the developer regardless of sales.
mcforest@feddit.org · 18 pts · 286d
Maybe because there are still people who are not tired of Call of Duty, liked the predecessor and are still looking forward for a sequel and play it with their friends?

warm@kbin.earth · 10 pts · 286d
They dont want people buying the old games, even their 15 year old ones are still full price on purpose. They want you in the latest game each year, exposed to all the predatory extra-transactions, then they want you to do that again the next year and the next and the next... the games are not priced like that because they "forgot", it's a business strategy.
Saledovil@sh.itjust.works · 17 pts · 285d
More than not a great start: Only people who have bought the game are allowed to review it, so reviewers are already biased towards liking the game, because only somebody who thinks they would enjoy the game would spend money on it. It's basically impossible to get a strong negative score by just being run of the mill awful. So "mixed" means that about 50% of people who though they would enjoy the game, didn't, which is quite damning.

When people may get into a competitive game, data shows that they commit to it as their primary game.
It becomes a part of their identity. You see things like Leage of Legends going strong despite a slow down in new players - people just commit to it for better or for worse, likely because most of the skills they’ve gained in it and friends they’ve made will not transfer to other games. Even other FPS games have different nuances that are non trivial once a player becomes serious about winning.
Take Wild Rift vs Mobile Legends Bang Bang. MLBB is objectively a worse rip off of League of Legends and the Chinese game Glory of Kings, but it was first to market on mobile. Now that League has released their mobile version with immense polish and quality, many mobile moba gamers just aren’t interested - they’re already totally invested in their main game, despite it being proved in court that it’s a cheap copy. (Not cheap as in $$$ though)
When you’re a kid, spending time on any competitive game will be fun (if you can handle the baseline toxicity) since you will start bad at most of them. When you get older there is a real cost to switching, you will not have as much fun until you build up the years of muscle memory that would be needed to even approach your skill at the previous game.
Because of the lock in, if a competitive game finds a sizeable enough player base and lasts a good handful of years, the devs essentially get free rein to milk their cow as they see fit.
BilboBargains@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 285d
Short answer: you wouldn't buy this game, given your valid criticisms.
This type of extortionate pricing policy speaks to the general user base being nobs, die hard try hards and probably a toxic gaming environment. Having a barrier to entry in any activity prevents total idiots from entering. Consoles have made it easier for people who don't understand how to operate a PC to play games but that necessarily means those games will be replete with obnoxious people. The advent of smartphones has done that for the internet.

I can’t say I like how /Games often circles around negative attention rather than positive.
Activision spent billions on marketing so people will buy these stupid Ultra Editions. Even negative attention gets people thinking about and talking about the game.
Instead, post about the cool indie games out that you think deserve far more attention than this battle pass slop. Let Activision come check up on us and cry because for all their efforts no one even cares to hate on their game.
Theres an asymmetric game out as a demo, called Carnival Hunt. It has a really unique aesthetic, and isn’t all that fun yet, in part because of the formula being refined and players getting better at it. But I like the idea: Rather than TCM’s idea of unlocking doors towards an exit, the survivors, “bunnies”, are trying to climb the floors of a large building, with each method of ascending a floor requiring various tools and making noise. Some ways up are harder to set up but easier to repeat, others only work if the killer is ignoring them.

I tried to use OpenSUSE tumbleweed for about 6 months as my main desktop, but eventually due to many of the things I wanted to do being a real pain to do in linux, said fuck it and went back to windows whilst building a new high end gaming rig.
It really sucks as I hate Microsoft with a burning passion, but if you want to play games, or use many CAD packages or make music, or watch videos (specifically with pot player for me, as it absolutely dunks on VLC unfortunately), then you just have to use Windows.
I haaaaaate the obvious attempts by the new taskbar to control user behaviour.
I hate the spying which it takes a while to turn most of it off, I hate... a lot, but the world is how it is.
I'm very thankful for Steamdecks gaining steam so that one day hopefully gaming on linux will be possible, and maybe adoption goes up and then maybe other apps follow.
Maybe the US collapse will have Europe mass switching, causing professional apps to also move over, especially CAD.

Bigwig studio is a great ableton replacement that is Linux native too. Made by some of the original team from ableton too iirc.
Theres also Reaper if you want something closer to FL studio.
I'm not into CAD stuff at the moment but I'm pretty sure there are some really good open source ones out there at the moment that are Linux native also.
I've not had any issues with any games on bazzite or cachyos either. Although I don't play AAA multiplayer games with the shitty anti cheats, which i think are the only ones that don't work now. Master Chief collection is about as close to that as I go but that works completely fine.
Keep in mind with bazzite and cachyos i also didn't need to do any tinkering to get the games to work. They just do.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 285d
Oh I wish, but the only thing worth anything is FreeCAD, and it is literally pain to use. The UI is infamously horrific, they're only now sort of fixing basic issues like the infamous topology issue, and it seems like the devs are dead set on breaking all the standard UI and UX conventions of every other CAD program since the beginning of time, and its just pain to use or learn.
Then it breaks your designs all the time too with cryptic errors.
The other ones, some of them only have basic modelling capabilities, are completely programatic, and you have no hopes of doing things like FEA or anything like that, much less motion studies or the other basics you need to successfully make a lot of things.
Its in a painful state, and CAD, if you even want to make a cent with other CAD software is bare minimum almost 1000 USD per year.
Its very depressing if you are a more creative person and not made out of money.
I've been told this many times, and sure its true for single player games without awful DRM schemes, but you can basically count multiplayer games out, and many games that have awful phone home systems.
Its ultimately like, how much do i want to fight my own operating system, and when people have a finite level of burn before burnout, how much do you really want to spend of that burn on an operating system you use daily?
Its a heavy cost for not that much benefit, especially with so much on fire right now.
Maybe Ill try again eventually if there is at least a competent CAD package available.
MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 285d
Like I said, I play quite a bit of multiplayer games that work fine. Just not the shitty live service with awful kernel level anti cheat ones which you would never have caught me playing even back on windows.
The only notable games I know that don't work are valorant and league because of their anti cheat, but i would never want to play them anyway. I've played marvel rivals on bazzite though, perfect experience, ended up running better on the same hardware than it did on windows.
I also feel like I have to fight against windows now more then ever. I currently still have to use it for work and it can be a nightmare at times. On Linux if something is wrong I can almost always find a way to fix it. Most of the time you're shit out of luck on windows 11.

It's a bit more basebuildy than Terraria which I actually prefer as someone who enjoys rimworld. It's pretty big on boss fights tho, but i usually leave that to my friends and focus on the base. It has a lot of polish and quality-of-life features. I've sunk about 140 hours into it so far but I'll probably rack up a lot more than that. It isn't very replayable and has a weak endgame loop, but it's a very solid game.

Because you like Call of Duty so much it's the only game you ever play? 🤷♂️
I hate this shit, and it really sucks because I like competitive games, and all the competitive games made since, like, 2015 have been loaded with FOMO MTX bullshit which the devs exckusively focus on while balance and bug fixes get tossed to the way side. They are banking on players having more fun spending money than actually playing a fun game.
cecilkorik@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 285d
Yeah it's gotten shitty. I used to play competitive shooters all the way back to the original Team Fortress mod in classic Quake. It's not really fun anymore, for me anyway. It's way too overproduced and overmonetized, it's become a serious business, there's too much on the line so anti-cheating becomes a priority and it just sucks all the fun out of everything. I'm reminded of the scene in Ted Lasso where Roy Kent takes Jamie back to the little local pitch he grew up playing at with other guys on his street so he can remember what it's like to just play the game for fun again where there's no money on the line and nobody is watching you.
My suggestion would be have you considered getting into speedrunning at all? It's highly competitive, but is available for basically every game imaginable, can be done solo and can't really be gatekept by the multiplayer gods. And there are many different categories for all sorts of different playstyles. It's not just a straight line to the fastest finish either, or grinding out the best run after thousands of attempts, depending on the style you get into there's strategy and risk and RNG can sink you or save you. Most competitive fun I've ever had was speedrunning Legend of Zelda randomizers against people head-to-head. Same seed, same start time, green light go and your skill and choices will decide the outcome. There's a lot of fun to be had, I think, and it goes in a lot of different directions if you take some time to look around the scene to find if there any parts of it that appeal to you.

They completely understand... the numbers saying that they're making money hand over fist and the number of people who care is sadly minuscule.
These games have hit a critical mass where people will casually buy them because they're friends are and so its a common ground game to play with buddies.
I don't think we can ever rely on consumers pushing back on anti consumer practises because of the reality of people.
Not everyone can afford to care about every issue.
As a result, boycotts are very unlikely to work in the modern world. There is just too much all at once for any one person to care about all of them, so even if you, lets say, care about 1% (a really high estimate) of things that are wrong in the world, and are willing to act, if we extrapolated that out to the whole population, the only things that would move would need to have double digit percentages of peoples care overlapping before anything stuck.
Really, the answer is that you simply need a government that cares about its people/consumer rights.
The USA and Canada, both are very far away from having governments like that.
Europeans are a lot luckier, but yet still, there is plenty to go.
Blurntout@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 285d

I think that fighting games are in a much better place with the season passes(character DLC) than previously.
They are a much more long term game, with better balance patches and additions through mechanics to the game. Tekken 7 for example was supported for 7 years and you can jump in with just the base game. This also applies to other games like Street Fighter 5 and 6, Guilty Gear Strive and so on.
Where as if you go back to Street fighter 4 as an example, The support was limited and then they added more with a new game, Super Street Fighter 4, which then got replaced with Ultra Street Fighter 4, and you could not play someone who had Super if you only had Ultra which sucked for the online community.
I do think there is a lot of issues with where Fighting Games are going, but that is more an industry thing. Like battle passes, avatar clothes and other shit as micro transactions.
nuko147@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 285d
Well, maybe you are right. But still it feels wrong putting fighters that exist since 1995+ as paid DLC content (or almost half of your fighters are paid locked). Also if you want the whole package it costs you almost double money. I don't need support, i need a fine product from day one that has everything like BG3, E33, and many indie games. They just want to make games like a service and not products.
OrgunDonor@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 285d
While you may not need support for the game. The games would not do as well as they do without it. They are predominantly an online multiplayer game. I am no the biggest Tekken fan, but I am a pretty big fan of Street Fighter, I have over 1000 hours on SF6. If it didnt have the good online multiplayer, and just had just had the offline and single player stuff, I would have something like 100 hours maybe and would have moved on to other games.
And that makes a big difference, to how much I am willing to buy into both characters and costumes, and also the next game.
Tekken 8 and SF6 still have good(for fighting games) single player stuff, but you are looking at a simple story and some arcade modes. SF6 has a bit more of a single player RPG almost for its single player, and I have managed to sink around 80 hours into that, they add more with each new character and I believe it is free.
And to go back to Tekken, Tekken 3 had 22 characters, While Tekken 7 had 36, which then increases to 51 if you add in the addition characters, Tekken 8 currently has ~40 with more being added. They are fine games, with all the content that you want(mostly) in the base game, but the biggest difference between Tekken 3 and Tekken 7 or 8 is it isnt being replaced in a couple years by a new full priced game, it is getting patches and support, additional mechanics and moves, new characters. And the online/competitive community can thrive.
nuko147@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 285d
I don't know. I prefer to unlock characters through playing the game, not with my wallet.
Also you can have 2 different games with 25 fighters each every 4 years, versus having 1 game with 50 fighters for 7 years with the same money as 2 games. I just prefer the 1st option.
Just support the game for 2-3 years and make a better one after. If you need money for the support put DLC with soundtracks and artwork.

I want a Call of Doody game where you're running around downtown of a major city looking for a public bathroom while prairie dogging a big old shit kind of like Far Cry 2's malaria mechanic.
treesapx@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 286d
I'll support anyone who references Far Cry 2's malaria mechanic. A game ahead of its time...

With CoD BO3 extensive ability to be modded and workshop support, it could be theoretically possible.

I want to see a game where you have to pay rent on a server and you need to spend all of your time working to make in game currency to pay the rent otherwise you're kicked out. But when you're sick and can't play, they will kick you out anyways. And the rent keeps getting up, but the monthly income does not. And when you need customer support they put you on a waiting list and when it's your turn they say "wrong department, we're putting you on another waiting list" so you will never get the mental help you need. Yeah, I would definitely play that game, I know I'm good at it.

It's CoD. You're asking why people drink coke if you don't like coke.
Also, steam FPS reviews are full of people on full tilt. Use better review sources.

Nah, cod is an objectively bad game. Fight me
killeronthecorner@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 284d
Leave it in a steam review bruh
Mr_Dr_Oink@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 284d
Im not referring to any particular cod game. Im referring to the whole series. Its triple A garbage that is churned out like pop music and its boring. Every new game is a rehash of a previous one with no innovation and more monetization.
Its not a review of the game. Its an opinion about the capitalist nature of the companies who make these games and how shit it is.
killeronthecorner@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 284d
Yeah it was a joke man. CoD is exactly as you described but it's irrelevant to the people playing it.
Sports fans go and watch the same team play similar games dozens of times over many many seasons. That's what CoD is to its fans (FIFA, NFL, etc., similarly).
Both are not for me, but I get why other people like it.

I can only think of one reason, because it's the game your friends are playing.
You have two choices; buy the shitty game with the understanding that the game itself is not what matters but the time spent playing with your friends. Or, don't buy the game and spend the next few weeks, or months, not playing with your friends and hope they grow bored of the game soon.

Thanks to modern video games being barely functional slop most of the time, I got into emulation. All these games work beautifully and I have a massive catalogue of high quality games, with creative contents that would not get made anymore today.

I'm all for hating on CoD, but the DLC "content" is skins and minor cosmetics, it really doesn't add anything to the game and isn't necessary at all. Also the CoD Points are for cosmetics as well. There's a lot of shitty things you can and should say about Vanguard, but it is not pay to win.
TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 285d
Fair enough, at least we have to give them that. But that means it's a platform for people to show off they have more money than others and gladly show they wasted it on useless digital nonsense. Not the audience I'd like to play games with.

Unsurprising, it's not for anyone but those who spend a lot to be able to frag the other one.
I stopped playing MMOs and online shooters a long time ago. Instead dividing my time between actual cycling and playing single player adventure games.

Some dudes seem to be required to buy every COD game and every new sports game every year and that’s it until they eventually try to sell it all as a bundle on Facebook Marketplace.
I know this is a steam page, but y’know.
TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 285d
I'm a person sensitive to that stuff too. I love to have collections complete. I used to buy every special edition of assassin's creed but I should have stopped after black flag. I used to buy games fully, with all DLC's because I needed it to be complete. Even the expensive useless skins, for single-player games. It's so stupid. And most oft he times I wouldn't even finish the game and wouldn't even start on the extra purchased content. Same with boardgames on kickstarter. I have several games with all expansions and extras still in plastic, for several years.
But I'm done with this shit. I stopped buying boardgames because I have more than enough and I pirate videogames and purchase them only if I spent enough time enjoying the game.
But recently I purchased the latest Hitman game because I enjoyed the pirated version. When bought, it was only half a game because the pirated version had all the DLC's. So I refunded it, I'm not going to spend money for only half a game, then to have to spend more to get the complete game.
Indie games I buy, AAA games I pirate and most of them I won't even play longer than 3-5 hours because they are shit. Happy they didn't get my money, I feel scammed by the industry for way too long.

Marketing weirdly effective, for one. They pump a large portion of their budgets into hype and they make just enough back to keep going. It's like the same people who watch an ad for a fast food place and go even though it's never as advertised.
And most isn't direct marketing. They very much pay influencers to buy this slop and worse. You pay a half million to a guy to make something look popular and it becomes popular. It's very annoying.
Blackmist@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 284d
You wouldn't. You'd buy Titanfall 2 for a whopping £2.49, and play a great (if short) single player campaign and then delete it.
If only for Effect and Cause, which is right up there with the best levels in any game.

The graphics. You need the newer game to be able to play with the rest because they have the newer version, and you want the newer version for the better graphics, but to be able to run it properly you need to buy the high end GPU's. If yo don't, you're a loser, a sad poor person, because everyone else has it and you don't. So you throw away more money to something completely shit. And children are very easy to catch in this scam.

I got it on sale for 10 bucks last year. Great SP. Lots of fun.
TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 285d
That's why I pirate. Even 10 bucks is too much money for these companies exploiting their customers. The only "downside" is no multiplayer. But I only care about single-player anyway :)

Agreed, puts a damper on everything else that follows.
Also agreed. If I buy a Steam game, I'd generally much rather it be accessible through Steam and do not appreciate when games are sold on Steam for other platforms.
Not the worst price, but yeah I'd definitely expect a much better review score to justify that price. In the absence of a good review score this would be something I'd have to know I'm going to enjoy before I'd consider buying it full price.
I don't know for certain about this particular game, but I do know people were shitting on Monster Hunter: Rise for the exact same reason: a seemingly exorbitant amount of DLC available from release implying it's a cash grab and just trying to milk more cash out of the player.
That being said, in my opinion MHR wasn't even half as bad as the naysayers would have you believe. MHR on release on Steam had a lot of DLC, sure, but it didn't launch on Steam. It launched on the Switch then later was ported to Steam with all of the same DLC they had worked on since its launch a year prior.
Almost all of the DLC was exclusively cosmetic skins, and almost all of those were part of bundles available for significantly cheaper prices than each one individually. I don't recall the exact prices but I believe it was something like buy 10 skins individually for $2/ea or buy all of them in a bundle for $5. The real price for any sane person for all 10 skins would be $5, but this showed up on Steam as 11 DLC items with a total of $25. Multiply this by the 6-10 ish bundles they had on the title's release on Steam to get a huge quantity of items and a massively inflated price compared to what anyone who wanted everything would realistically pay, assuming they paid attention.
I don't know that CoD is doing a similar thing here, and I certainly wouldn't give them the benefit of the doubt, but I dislike this argument against them because it can be very misleading.
Not necessarily P2W, but yeah I'm not a fan of MTX either and again wouldn't give CoD the benefit of the doubt to have a good or fair monetization model.

I don't like the black ops series. The modern warfare games had a really nice single-player, or at least the first 2 (I haven't played any cod after that, they already broke it).
