From my reading of social media there are two kinds of neurodivergents: 1) hates showering, most unpleasant experience, sensory overload 2) loves showering, could live in the shower, sometimes exits the shower and realises that they forgot to wash their hair or soap up or something. Only misses their daily shower when they are very busy and can't find an hour in their schedules.
You may be a neurotypical if you:
shower each day
complete your shower in less than 10 minutes
don't forget any of the 1-3 things you are supposed to do in the shower
Sleeping in the shower! Do you then wake up when you start gurgling?
If you want a good night's sleep in the shower then get one of those continuous water heaters, or a recirculation shower to save on the water and energy.
It goes on at length about how the myriad filters remove everything. I hadn't thought about that, but I don't think it would clean the water THAT good.
A simple heat exchanger from the drain to the cold water running to the shower. A thermostat on the shower reduces the amount of hot water you use as the cold water gets warmer.
Recovering water from the drain to go into the shower again, probably via reverse osmosis.
Second option requires maintenance and a bunch of engineering. Unless there's a massive lack of water where you live and you have lots of money.
First option... Well, it requires more piping and that the drain pipe is a heat exchanging pipe - a pipe within a pipe where the cold water is in the outermost pipe, running in the opposite direction of the drain water. I'm not sure how much heat you would recover. The floor of the shower might need to be a bit higher than otherwise. And if you have hard water then I wouldn't do it. When you heat cold, hard water the calcium carbonate precipitates and you get limescale. To avoid reducing heat exchange efficiency and avoid clogs you would have to descale regularly and it's just not very accessible. With normal descaling you can remove a lot mechanically but here it would have to be all chemical. And how would you even get the descaler into those pipes?
Tl;dr don't do option 1, only do option 2 if you have very soft water.
I think the usual way these are installed is they go in the basement with the drain portion going between the sewers and the house's various drains and the fresh water portion going before the water heater to pre-heat the ground-temperature water before it enters the tank (although the DOE's diagram indicates it pre-heats all fresh water entering the house, thereby also warming the cold water, which is probably great for showering, but not when getting a glass of cold water while the dishwasher or clothes washer are running)
I've thought that if I were heavily renovating or building I'd want to strongly consider putting a tankless waterheater just for the shower. Main water heater does its job but can be set to a good handwashing temp but the shower never runs out of hot and is set hot enough for both myself and my wife.
I should have gone to the military, like I wanted to. When I finished school, I wanted to serve to learn discipline, order, and structure. My parents are both strict pacifists and had dragged me to peace protests from a young age. I didn’t want to break their heart, so an undisciplined civilian life it was. Still lacking discipline, order, and difficulty sleeping.
I don't known why people are down voting you.
You do you.
If you want to shoot a gun, go bet one and blast away.
If you want to blow shit up, umm I can't help you.
Army takes up to 36, and they're decently disciplined. May have missed the boat on Marines though, and that's where the true brainwashing occurs, in my opinion. And I don't mean brainwashing making you want to kill and love war, I'm not fond of either, less so after than before. But structure is a very real thing, and developing good habits.
I don’t know how much neurodivergence factors into it, though Im sure it does. Plenty of these sort of people think they only need to shower once every week or two because they don’t smell and usually insist they have “good hygiene” despite that. Some just straight up can’t be bothered. Both types tend to not have very many friends; who would ideally inform them that they stink.
I had a boyfriend that HAD to shower everytime he pooped. He couldn't poop anywhere he wouldn't be able to shower or he would be annoying until we got home. He also had IBS. Lovely time I had
Oh no. We had a bidet shower (bum gun), he just wouldn't use. He said it didn't felt clean enough. He wasn't a germophobe but I guess he couldn't handle poop lol. At lease he wasn't one of those "real men don't clean" gang
Nah cause I'm both of those. I want nothing to do with a shower until I get in and then I'll stay there until I run through 50 gallons of near boiling water. And then as the water starts turning cold I realize I haven't even washed yet.
Showering properly is one of the few things I do consistently, because if I'm not doing something outdoors like hiking or camping then my stinky bits annoy me.
Idk, humans have lots of different smells and some are more tolerable than others. Like if you don't sweat much (not me unfortunately) you can definitely go a day without showering. The worst human smell might be a rotting tooth though, that's really difficult to be around.
I'm the same. But of course I do daily the parts where the sun don't shine.
Some people really do smell more than others, with the same washing habits.
I myself prefer a slight body odor in others, even light sweat (not stink!). Although some perfumes smell really good. But that agressive deodorant smell I hate.
I'm sure plenty of people do, maybe you're even one of them, but turning this into blanket statements is weird and annoying. How many people think, because of the culture embodied in this sign, that they must shower every day, and never even check?
if you don’t shower daily you reek like shit /FULL STOP
Maybe you reek like shit after a day without showering because you don't adequately wipe your ass? Because I don't have that issue. I shower 2-3 times a week and don't have any issues smelling like I stepped in your argument.
I also don't really go places much since I work remote, but it's not hard to shower before leaving the house to go do something
Get a bidet, use deodorant, and you can skip a day between showers, as long as you haven't been working in the yard all day, or just got done at the gym.
I'm one of those low percentage of non east asian people who have this and it is indeed nice especially since I'm allergic to most deodorants. The hard ear wax does sometimes cause me issues during allergy season though so its not all good.
Yep. I developed eczema and soap/chemicals are not my friend, I will forgo deodorant in the winter and use it lightly during the summer - you'd be surprised how little you really need - but I am checking with people about it regularly. I had a friend tell me I smelled like "outside" which made me realize the crystal deodorant wasn't working right.
Plenty of people don’t start to smell bad 24h after a shower, with or without deodorant. In winter, I’d guess it’s actually most people.
I've learned for my own body the sweet spot is to use deodorant every day first thing in the morning and once per 48 hours take a full shower but if I do anything that causes me to sweat on an off day then I need to take a quick shower without any soaps. This keeps my body appropriately not-smelly and my hair doesn't get greasy from over-washing like it does if I do a full shower daily. This regime also survives both running 5ks and biking 20+ miles in the summer, even if the day of the race/ride falls on an off-day!
Regarding deodorant I get smelly by the end of the day if I do not use deodorant regardless of the temperature. Also, some deodorants are apparently really good for larger folks who have chaffing issues. A friend of a friend specifically recommended slathering it anywhere that chafes first thing in the morning and that can help significantly
Well I'm certainly not taking a cold shower in winter! I don't have a thermostatic shower tap so don't know what temperature it is, but I guess I have it at about body temperature... Not sure if that is as hot as you mean.
Thank you for being the voice of reason and your patience with some people. A lot of people succumb to The Toupee Fallacy (A form of selection bias in which a thing whose quality is measured in terms of being difficult to detect is wrongly judged to be of poor quality in general, caused by the fact that most people only notice poor quality instances of it.).
I stopped showering every day for medical reasons and under medical supervision when I was young, and that really helped with my smell(Turns out I had both a fungal infection, and a hormonal disorder), and the habit stayed. My hair and my skin do a lot better, and due to the nature of my job, I would certainly know if I smelled, since I am often meeting clients and other team leads.
Having a bidet, applying deodorant daily and changing my clothes daily as well, added to working in climate controlled spaces, away from the sun, crowds and smelly habits like smoking are all factors that some people seem incapable of even considering.
But of course, this is Lemmy, where nuance often just fucking dies.
Denying the antecedent: "showering every day prevents smelling bad, therefore if you don't shower every day, you will smell bad"
Confirmation & Selection bias: "that person smells bad, therefore they can't shower every day, making them an example of not showering every day leading to smelling bad"
Bias of anecdotal evidence, presumably - at least, I'm assuming that most such people really do smell bad to themselves after only a day, which is treated as a reliable indicator of everyone's condition.
It's quite interesting to me, because it clearly becomes a very emotive topic when the difference between waiting one, two or three days to bathe is pretty abstract. I have developed a hypothesis that it's the feeling of having a shower when one is feeling sticky and sweaty and dirty, and then coming out feeling nice and clean, that gets readily associated with bad odour. I then think that this link simply can't form easily if your feeling when coming out of the shower is not "nice and clean" but "disgusting ball of skin-flakes held together only by paraffin and artificial grease".
I have encountered this kind of attitude before but I was actually surprised to find it that prevalent here, because I expected more people to be sympathetic to conditions which require deviation from the norm.
Oh fuck, moisturiser!! Thank god someone has finally suggested MOISTURISER to me! And here I'd been covering my body in salt and ash. Truly I am saved.
I don't want to go into too much detail about medical stuff in public but I don't believe it is about soap alone because it also affects skin that i don't soap up in the shower.
You're not anonymous on social media? That's always a mistake.
affects skin that i don’t soap up in the shower.
Dawg, what's the point of showering if you don't wash your entire body?
There's no valid excuse for not bathing every day, except if you're camping or something. If you really are having negative skin reactions, you should go see a dermatologist. I'm not a doctor, so maybe I'm wrong.
You say that you don't stink, but you also don't bathe every day, so I'm not going to trust your judgment on matters of hygiene. You should try to get an opinion from someone who wouldn't lie to you. I have a cousin who doesn't regularly shower, and he tries to hide it by slathering himself with cologne, but that just makes him smell like body odor and cologne. I tell him he smells like shit, but he doesn't care. He readily admits that he is just too lazy to shower every day.
Idk why I care so much about this. It's your life, be gross if you want to. Just... Don't lie to yourself, I guess.
I don't wash in the shower what I wash out of the shower.
I am an adult and it's weird you and others assume that I haven't consulted a doctor about this in my entire life.
Not all health problems are curable, so actually doctors' advice includes (or can include) "don't shower every day if that exacerbates your condition".
My partner wouldn't lie to me about this, which I know because sometimes they do tell me I need a shower. Not often though. It's weird that you think it's so hard to tell, yet also are so adamant that it must be done every day - yet that's my experience with most people online.
It seems pretty clear it just grosses people out who never questioned the habit.
Like, you're trying to make your point sound reasonable and well thought-out, but then you write stuff like
I don’t wash in the shower what I wash out of the shower.
Wtf does that mean? Your hands? Your face? Your asshole?
I'm not a doctor, but I've been on this earth for enough decades to have met all kinds of people with different showering habits. Those that don't shower daily are easy to identify, either by their smell up close, or by their oily skin from a distance. Maybe you're an anomaly, and should be studied by doctors for your superior anti-stink genes?
My partner wouldn’t lie to me about this, which I know because sometimes they do tell me I need a shower.
Different people have different sensitivity to smells. I've known two people who have no sense of smell (and one of them habitually stinks). Maybe your partner likes your stench? Maybe they just tolerate it because they love you?
Again, I don't care how you live your life, esp since it's unlikely I'll ever have to smell you. I have no ill-will towards you, and hope you live a long and happy life. But for the sake of intellectual curiosity and internet conversation, I'm not backing down from my position if all you have is a "just trust me bro".
What parts of your body do you wash regularly outside the shower? Is it a non-zero amount? Then you understand what I mean, right?
How are you correlating the smells of all these people with how often they shower? How many people have you asked that question of, because I'm guessing it's "none" and you're simply assuming that everyone who showers every other day is detectable by your nose - rather than those being people who haven't washed for a month.
My partner tells me on the rare occasion when I smell bad, so there's no reason to think they're saving my feelings. I can also smell the change.
You're so keen to assume all these details about my life instead of believing what seems to me to be extremely unsurprising - that it takes at least one person a few days to start smelling bad.
people of different age, race and sex all smell different, with a common gene among Asian people resulting in little to know body odour. This shouldn't be hard to believe.
My partner tells me on the rare occasion when I smell bad, so there’s no reason to think they’re saving my feelings. I can also smell the change.
Is that the case? Or do they only tell you once the smell becomes unbearable? Usually, when you reach the point that you can smell your own stank, it's really bad for other people. Have you had an open conversation with them about this? It's an awkward topic for most people. If you're so adamantly defending your point here on the internet anonymously, I wonder if you're more defensive about it IRL, and off-putting to people who would otherwise be honest with you.
In any case, one of us is delusional here. You? Me? I don't think we'll reach a consensus on that one.
I only shower on hair wash days. Showering isn't the only form of bathing, and I don't understand why people think soap stops working outside a shower. I feel absolutely gross if I can't take a wet washcloth with some soap and wipe all the grime off periodically. If you're relying on a daily shower to keep you clean, and don't wash outside a shower, you must be absolutely disgusting.
Why can't you use a washcloth inside a shower? Why do you think sitting in a pool of your own grime is cleaner than having a shower wash it down the drain?
I use the skin friendliest soap I know of, and can smell when I need a shower, and have trusted other people who validate my own sense. Olfactory fatigue makes no sense unless you shower really infrequently.
Thanks for your fake, ill-informed concern though. Sucks that on Lemmy people are so closed minded they can't understand that people sweat less than they do.
That's just not how interacting with humans works though.
Chances are there are several individuals who visit this shop with "offensive" hygiene.
The sign isn't going to stop them coming in.
When you say "hey fuck off stinky", they're going to react badly. Pointing to the sign isn't going to make them any less reactive or defensive.
The correct way to handle this is to pull them aside, tell them you really appreciate them visiting the store, they're really into the hobby and a key part of the local scene or whatever, but last time they came in a few other customers mentioned their hygiene.
I totally understand that most people don't want to have that second interaction, that's fine.
My point is, in either approach the sign doesn't help.
I get it, personal hygiene isn't always a big priority for us nerdy types. But it's reaaaally not hard to do the bare minimum to keep from stinking, guys. Have some consideration for others when emerging from your cave.
When you go to cons you always see these guys who are clearly spending mad cash, but they’re in a ratty t shirt and sweat pants, and they smell like unwashed ass covered in baby powder. You can play magic for 10 hours but you can’t go take a 15 minute shower???
In the mid 90's I was with a group of union apprentices attending the mandatory four week training at our headquarters in the Midwest. They put us up at a decent hotel in the downtown area. During our stay one year they had some kind of fantasy con. Many of these people were foul smelling. They were not used to being told they couldn't enter the elevator without getting fucked up. Some of my fellow apprentices were how shall we say it. Impulsively violent toward people who smelled like unwashed ass. After all nearly everyone of us would shower once or twice daily due to the job. The con attendees quickly learned how to use the back elevator away from our floor.
It was really kinda sad but the Navy also had a floor for their recruits to stay at while they were being processed in. Many were young women all of legal age with the navy personnel trying but not always succeeding in keeping those ladies away from forty or so young construction workers. One of their main tactics was to encourage the navy recruits to use the back elevator. In forcing those unwashed losers to the back we inflicted them on those recruits.
its because CARD game players: yugioh pokemon, purposely not shower, and smell that way on purpose to distract other players from the game making them more likely to make mistake and lose a game. it has gotten so bad they have to implement the smell ban rule.
Yeah every once in awhile if I'm in a certain position I catch a whiff of myself and it isn't good.
I had a dream last night that I wandered into a cozy dormitory-like situation for the mentally ill and all I wanted was to find the shower room but the dream ended before I made it that far but I saw so many familiar friendly faces & everyone was warm & welcoming.
In my dreams people are so real & genuine & we all get each other.
don’t get why some people have a problem with that.
I have bipolar disorder. I see doctors for this. Saturday October 25th I took a shower and I went to work. Next day I went to work too. That night I drove 2 hours to prepare for an athletic event on Monday morning. I did the athletic event which took all day and then I went to bed. I was in bed from Tuesday to Friday. Friday morning I finally took a shower again.
That snapshot of my life from Tuesday to Friday is my dark side of bipolar disorder. Lay in bed. Can't move. Stare at phone. Lemmy, YouTube, eat, sleep, pee, poop, repeat for 4 days until something makes me snap out of it which today was the obnoxious infuriating sound of a leafblower outside my bedroom window. And just like that I got out of bed & took a shower. It was quite a relief to finally be able to move after feeling trapped in bed for 4 days.
it may not be as frequent at your store? might happen at the most busy card game stores. i went by 2 just the other day, i dint stop to read if there was a sign, but it was practically empty inside, it was bustling before the pandemic, covid really screwed things up with this shops. Plus scalping also has pushed fans out of the game completely.
Some LCS's (local card shops) are more Magic focused, some are more Pokémon focused, as well as Yugioh focused. They'll still sell other product, but most likely have a core group of players who show up to play one type of game.
The LCS I used to go to sold everything, but it was largely known to be the spot to play MTG/have tournaments consistently versus their Pokémon days.
The one in my city is really small and fun. Whenever you go in to buy a few cards there's always a more autistic than me kid asking me if I know this card, if not, they'll explain, and it goes on for 45min and you can't get away. Or the owner is there and starts to complain about the economy, his autie customers not working and being poor, about politics, about how it used to be better back then, his experience in prison (ehm ok) etc. Again, can't leave for at least 45min. Few years ago I came there with my partner, she needed a few lands. A hoard of people came onto us. "Ooh, a girl playing magic!" We stayed there for 2 hours as we couldn't end the conversations even though we tried many times lol.
I love it so much, places like these are super rare and awesome which should never stop to exist. Support your local game stores! Whether it's trading cards, miniature war gaming or regular boardgames.
Ahhh brings back memories from my YuGiOh days, sitting in the back of the shop opening extortionately expensive packs and playing game after game. I'd miss it if I didn't now see just how much of a horrible waste of money it was.
May be so, but fun is worth some money too. And some cards hold value. One card I bought for 5 euros is now worth 1200.
I haven't played magic for several years but recently I started playing with friends again.
I also played Warhammer 40k for a bit. Talking about overpriced shit. I want to sell it all. Once they changed the rules so I had to invest 500 euros to get the right books and extra models to get my armies playable again. 55euros for 3 unmoddable models. Plus super expensive paint. Fuck that. And there are many players who don't know what sportmenship means.
Magic with friends stays a lot of fun so I'm sticking with that. The interest goes on and off over the years while the value of cards only increases so I'm happy.
I can buy it with no scent. I wish to fuck other people did. If you put this junk on yourself every day, and put more and more on until you can actually smell it after your olfactory nerves have been burned out by years of such abuse, think about what that's doing to people that are actually sensitive to this shit.
Nah. They all suck. Id much rather shower more frequently and stay in a climate controlled environment than have some asthma activating supermarket washroom smelling crap making me itch.
Unpopular opinion but I agree. Maybe I don't hang around enough stinky people, but I've encountered far more instances of punch-in-the-face perfume/cologne than body odor.
im sensitive to those perfume smells, but BO is much worst, especially if you dint shower for a while, also your scalp starts to smell to. perfumes, have volatile compounds , aromatic and alcohols that causes those smells, those are short range, unlike BO.
What’s wrong with not wearing deodorant? That shit has a ton of aluminum and other garbage in it. It ruins your clothes. You just need to wash and change your clothes regularly.
The aluminium salts are the effective ingredient that stops us from sweating. Products that contain aluminium salts are called anti-transpirants because of that.
There is also no reason to call them garbage, because besides of being effective against sweat, they don't harm us. That was a myth, disproven for years now.
The BO AOE cloud that follows not wearing deodorant is what’s wrong with not wearing it.
Lots of them do have aluminum, but more and more brands now have new formulations without it. Most of the mainstream ones in my area have variants. There are also more natural ones available like Dr. Squatch, but I haven’t had good luck with it (melted during summer, but was effective).
As far as ruining your clothes, do you mean staining the armpit area? I’ve only had that happen to a couple of tshirts years ago with Axe deodorant sticks.
I’ve only had that happen to a couple of tshirts years ago with Axe deodorant sticks.
I generally use Degree (there's only like 4 deoderant options in my local stores and I can choose between Oldspice which my wife hates, Axe which smells like a middle school dance in all the worst ways, Suave which never lasted the full day when I tried it or Degree) and I've noticed some older shirts have gotten some minor staining on the inside, but its literally only visible on the inside and only if you really hunt for it
The BO AOE cloud that follows not wearing deodorant is what’s wrong with not wearing it.
SO MUCH THIS. My dad has refused to use deodorant my entire life. You don't want to do anything around him after about 2PM because he showers every morning and reeks of BO by the end of the day (he also matches the meme about only using Head and Shoulders for literally everything in the shower just to complete the mental image for you)
The only way someone would be offended by this, is if they don't wear deodorant and are aware of their own BO, but decided it's actually a good thing that everyone can smell it.
Wanting everyone to have a good time and not have to smell something horrible isn't in any way narcissistic.
Thinking it's okay to make everyone else smell your own BO, absolutely is narcissistic.
As a regular person, if I saw this I would be glad they were saying something. I wouldn't associate myself with it because I know that I bathe regularly and don't smell like rancid asshole. I spent a lot of time the game store in my town when I was a kid and mfers that couldn't wash properly were absolutely a problem.
I fear you're the one who is having trouble reading. The sign clearly delineates who is allowed and who is not. Wearing deodorant and showered within the last 24 hours =Welcome. No deodorant or has not showered =fuck off. How is this insulting ALL customers?
You aren't disagreeing honestly. You're disagreeing as if you can't see my arguments. I wish lemmy as a platform had a "mute replies to this comment" so I could stop seeing the replies on this thread specifically. No one is arguing in good faith, they're all, like you, masturbating to the idea of feeling superior to people rather than acknowledging the disrespect to the customers.
I can see your arguments, they are based on the incorrect presumption that this sign is insulting to all customers. It isn't, it clearly spells out who it's intended to disrespect. Anyone that doesn't meet that criteria is free to walk right by.
you seem to be the loud an obnoxious types at any store, that would get you booted, stop projecitng your personal problems. as i said ina previous comments, people like you would make it habit to smell bad on purpose to illict reaction, and this has made people lose actual tourney games.
No. I seem like the type that would not give this store money for being shitty towards their customer base.
as i said ina previous comments, people like you would make it habit to smell bad on purpose to illict reaction, and this has made people lose actual tourney games.
This isn't an argument against anything I said, its just throwing out insults pretending that they're true so you dont have to have any logic to your point.
Those people would be kicked out regardless of the useless customer bashing sign.

This is very much a thing! Here's a DOE explainer page and here's a Home Depot listing

And I don't mean brainwashing making you want to kill and love war, I'm not fond of either, less so after than before. But structure is a very real thing, and developing good habits.

That's like 8 mins, maybe 9 because I spend 2 with my hair, maybe 10 because I spend 2 mins wetting my body to heat it up.
Ofc, if I'm feeling cold I end up spending way longer in the wet body phase.

FishFace@piefed.social · 6 pts · 303d
Yeah, my partner can be trusted to advise me of the situation lol
Trainguyrom@reddthat.com · 6 pts · 303d

FishFace@piefed.social · 3 pts · 302d
Yeah. I guess you can analyse it as:
It's quite interesting to me, because it clearly becomes a very emotive topic when the difference between waiting one, two or three days to bathe is pretty abstract. I have developed a hypothesis that it's the feeling of having a shower when one is feeling sticky and sweaty and dirty, and then coming out feeling nice and clean, that gets readily associated with bad odour. I then think that this link simply can't form easily if your feeling when coming out of the shower is not "nice and clean" but "disgusting ball of skin-flakes held together only by paraffin and artificial grease".
I have encountered this kind of attitude before but I was actually surprised to find it that prevalent here, because I expected more people to be sympathetic to conditions which require deviation from the norm.
bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 304d

I don't want to go into too much detail about medical stuff in public but I don't believe it is about soap alone because it also affects skin that i don't soap up in the shower.
entwine@programming.dev · -10 pts · 303d
You're not anonymous on social media? That's always a mistake.
FishFace@piefed.social · 6 pts · 303d
I don't wash in the shower what I wash out of the shower.
I am an adult and it's weird you and others assume that I haven't consulted a doctor about this in my entire life.
Not all health problems are curable, so actually doctors' advice includes (or can include) "don't shower every day if that exacerbates your condition".
My partner wouldn't lie to me about this, which I know because sometimes they do tell me I need a shower. Not often though. It's weird that you think it's so hard to tell, yet also are so adamant that it must be done every day - yet that's my experience with most people online.
It seems pretty clear it just grosses people out who never questioned the habit.
entwine@programming.dev · -2 pts · 303d
Like, you're trying to make your point sound reasonable and well thought-out, but then you write stuff like
Wtf does that mean? Your hands?
Different people have different sensitivity to smells. I've known two people who have no sense of smell (and one of them habitually stinks). Maybe your partner likes your stench? Maybe they just tolerate it because they love you?
Again, I don't care how you live your life, esp since it's unlikely I'll ever have to smell you. I have no ill-will towards you, and hope you live a long and happy life. But for the sake of intellectual curiosity and internet conversation, I'm not backing down from my position if all you have is a "just trust me bro".
FishFace@piefed.social · 2 pts · 303d
This shouldn't be hard to believe.
entwine@programming.dev · 0 pts · 303d
Is that the case? Or do they only tell you once the smell becomes unbearable? Usually, when you reach the point that you can smell your own stank, it's really bad for other people. Have you had an open conversation with them about this? It's an awkward topic for most people. If you're so adamantly defending your point here on the internet anonymously, I wonder if you're more defensive about it IRL, and off-putting to people who would otherwise be honest with you.
In any case, one of us is delusional here. You? Me? I don't think we'll reach a consensus on that one.
faythofdragons@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 303d
I only shower on hair wash days. Showering isn't the only form of bathing, and I don't understand why people think soap stops working outside a shower. I feel absolutely gross if I can't take a wet washcloth with some soap and wipe all the grime off periodically. If you're relying on a daily shower to keep you clean, and don't wash outside a shower, you must be absolutely disgusting.
entwine@programming.dev · 1 pts · 303d
Why can't you use a washcloth inside a shower? Why do you think sitting in a pool of your own grime is cleaner than having a shower wash it down the drain?

When you say "hey fuck off stinky", they're going to react badly. Pointing to the sign isn't going to make them any less reactive or defensive.
The correct way to handle this is to pull them aside, tell them you really appreciate them visiting the store, they're really into the hobby and a key part of the local scene or whatever, but last time they came in a few other customers mentioned their hygiene.
I totally understand that most people don't want to have that second interaction, that's fine.

The LCS I used to go to sold everything, but it was largely known to be the spot to play MTG/have tournaments consistently versus their Pokémon days.
TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 303d
Edit: this is most of my magic

I would love to support my LCS, but unfortunately they're in the scalper business as I caught the owners wiping out inventory at the Big Box stores.
TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 303d
That's sad
BluesF@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 303d
Ahhh brings back memories from my YuGiOh days, sitting in the back of the shop opening extortionately expensive packs and playing game after game. I'd miss it if I didn't now see just how much of a horrible waste of money it was.
TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 303d

I'd rather smell unwashed gamer than the overpowering perfume in these bloody deodorants.
HikingVet@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 303d
You do know you can buy lighter scents....
BartyDeCanter@lemmy.sdf.org · 4 pts · 303d
Or even unscented.
Ageroth@reddthat.com · 4 pts · 303d
Yeah but they can't make other people wear it. There's always that one person who thinks bathing in body spray is the same as actually bathing
ikidd@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 303d
I can buy it with no scent. I wish to fuck other people did. If you put this junk on yourself every day, and put more and more on until you can actually smell it after your olfactory nerves have been burned out by years of such abuse, think about what that's doing to people that are actually sensitive to this shit.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 303d
Nah. They all suck. Id much rather shower more frequently and stay in a climate controlled environment than have some asthma activating supermarket washroom smelling crap making me itch.
jellygoose@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 303d
Bro what the fuck
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 303d
Whats so what the fuck about this? Are you seriously saying you believe people smell the moment they're out of the shower?
Are you saying people smell just from the brief amounts of heat moving from one climate controlled place to another?
Are you saying people smell before the by products that actually smell are produced by the bacteria that are abundant around sweaty regions?
This just seems like ignorance on your part.
jellygoose@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 294d
You’re unhinged dude. Take your meds.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 294d
Your history is literally mostly short thoughtless insults hurled at other users.
HikingVet@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 302d
What does this have to do with the price of tea?
hark@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 302d
Unpopular opinion but I agree. Maybe I don't hang around enough stinky people, but I've encountered far more instances of punch-in-the-face perfume/cologne than body odor.
ikidd@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 302d
Thank you. Body odor is gross, but it doesn't give me an insta-headache like the chemicals people douse themselves in every day.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 302d
im sensitive to those perfume smells, but BO is much worst, especially if you dint shower for a while, also your scalp starts to smell to. perfumes, have volatile compounds , aromatic and alcohols that causes those smells, those are short range, unlike BO.
jaybone@lemmy.zip · -12 pts · 304d
What’s wrong with not wearing deodorant? That shit has a ton of aluminum and other garbage in it. It ruins your clothes. You just need to wash and change your clothes regularly.
blackris@discuss.tchncs.de · 16 pts · 304d
The aluminium salts are the effective ingredient that stops us from sweating. Products that contain aluminium salts are called anti-transpirants because of that.
There is also no reason to call them garbage, because besides of being effective against sweat, they don't harm us. That was a myth, disproven for years now.
ryannathans@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 304d
Don't wear a deodorant that contains aluminium then, not that hard...
dublet@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 304d
I knew someone who didn't see the point of wearing any, yet they had a noticeable "funk". Turned out they're anosmic.
rehydrate5503@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 304d
The BO AOE cloud that follows not wearing deodorant is what’s wrong with not wearing it.
Lots of them do have aluminum, but more and more brands now have new formulations without it. Most of the mainstream ones in my area have variants. There are also more natural ones available like Dr. Squatch, but I haven’t had good luck with it (melted during summer, but was effective).
As far as ruining your clothes, do you mean staining the armpit area? I’ve only had that happen to a couple of tshirts years ago with Axe deodorant sticks.
Trainguyrom@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 303d
I generally use Degree (there's only like 4 deoderant options in my local stores and I can choose between Oldspice which my wife hates, Axe which smells like a middle school dance in all the worst ways, Suave which never lasted the full day when I tried it or Degree) and I've noticed some older shirts have gotten some minor staining on the inside, but its literally only visible on the inside and only if you really hunt for it
SO MUCH THIS. My dad has refused to use deodorant my entire life. You don't want to do anything around him after about 2PM because he showers every morning and reeks of BO by the end of the day (he also matches the meme about only using Head and Shoulders for literally everything in the shower just to complete the mental image for you)
ieGod@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 303d
Antiperspirants contain aluminum, not deodorants.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -25 pts · 303d
Ha ha lol lets insult customers!
Seriously I do not understand signs like this.
They only scold the very customers they want, while they will bounce off the customers they don't want.
These signs are self masturbatory in nature. Just someone who wants to rant and feel better than others in a public fashion.
ryathal@sh.itjust.works · 24 pts · 303d
That's not a sign that just gets put up. That's a response to a problem.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -14 pts · 303d
Im not arguing about whether it is or isn't. Im saying no sensible person thinks this is actually a solution and this is 100% a narcissism play.
zalgotext@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 303d
What's a sensible solution to the problem of unhygienic customers then
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -15 pts · 303d
Ill tell you what it isn't: This.
Rude and demeaning text aimed at your customers absolutely does not help the problem.
They could try a probably still bad approach of saying the rooms are warm and so people might want to pay more attention to this.
They could have people just approach those who smell and point it out to them politely
They could have better air exchange to mitigate the problem when not caught.
There are so many options which arent this, because this simply does not work.
NotSafeForWorld@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 303d
Eh, i fw it. Either come back with the decency to hold up your end of the social contract or I don't want your money.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 303d
If you are a regular person, it tells you that you are associated with this now.
It means you don’t want to go to a place that is associated with this.
This isn't actually affecting the people its pretending to affect.
NotSafeForWorld@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 303d
You're overthinking what a regular person would think and do
CaptnNMorgan@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 303d
The only way someone would be offended by this, is if they don't wear deodorant and are aware of their own BO, but decided it's actually a good thing that everyone can smell it.
Wanting everyone to have a good time and not have to smell something horrible isn't in any way narcissistic.
Thinking it's okay to make everyone else smell your own BO, absolutely is narcissistic.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 303d
Not at all.
If you are a regular person, it tells you that you are associated with this now.
It means you don't want to go to a place that is associated with this.
You pretending you don't understand my point doesnt make your argument sound.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 303d
As a regular person, if I saw this I would be glad they were saying something. I wouldn't associate myself with it because I know that I bathe regularly and don't smell like rancid asshole. I spent a lot of time the game store in my town when I was a kid and mfers that couldn't wash properly were absolutely a problem.
webp@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 303d
How is it so rude and demeaning? It literally is just a warning sign that if someone doesn't have a hygenic lifestyle they will be asked to leave.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 303d
If you are a regular person, it tells you that you are associated with this now.

Why does it upset you so much? Kind of suspicious XD
eestileib@lemmy.blahaj.zone · -2 pts · 303d
Ah but we are dealing with gamers here, not sensible people.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 4 pts · 303d
No one wants the stinky customers. If you're insulted by this you should stfu and take a bath.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 303d
I fear you might be able to read, but not able to comprehend.
There are a legion of other people who also jump to insults pretending they cant understand the problem.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 303d
I fear you're the one who is having trouble reading. The sign clearly delineates who is allowed and who is not. Wearing deodorant and showered within the last 24 hours =Welcome. No deodorant or has not showered =fuck off. How is this insulting ALL customers?
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 303d
At this point your comment is tantamount to trolling, because there is no way you don't understand my message.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 303d
Disagreeing with you is not the same as misunderstanding.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 303d
You aren't disagreeing honestly. You're disagreeing as if you can't see my arguments. I wish lemmy as a platform had a "mute replies to this comment" so I could stop seeing the replies on this thread specifically. No one is arguing in good faith, they're all, like you, masturbating to the idea of feeling superior to people rather than acknowledging the disrespect to the customers.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 303d
I can see your arguments, they are based on the incorrect presumption that this sign is insulting to all customers. It isn't, it clearly spells out who it's intended to disrespect. Anyone that doesn't meet that criteria is free to walk right by.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 302d
you seem to be the loud an obnoxious types at any store, that would get you booted, stop projecitng your personal problems. as i said ina previous comments, people like you would make it habit to smell bad on purpose to illict reaction, and this has made people lose actual tourney games.
Credibly_Human@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 302d
No. I seem like the type that would not give this store money for being shitty towards their customer base.
This isn't an argument against anything I said, its just throwing out insults pretending that they're true so you dont have to have any logic to your point.
Those people would be kicked out regardless of the useless customer bashing sign.
