Headline is wrong. Former CEO.

johnwicksdog@aussie.zone · 84 pts · 269d (1 reply)

Fair call, but it’s worth adding he is still the chairman and part of the Toyoda dynasty and clearly representing the brand.

henfredemars@lemdro.id · 42 pts · 269d

This is true. I more have a bone to pick with intentionally misleading headlines. It sounds way more punishing for it to be the CEO, but that’s just not true. The author didn’t need to lie to get the point across.

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 10 pts · 269d (5 replies)

Oh thank God. I just paid off my Avalon and can't really afford another car rn.

RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com · 4 pts · 268d (4 replies)

Well if it's already paid off you're not really giving them any more money so it's fine right

Furbag@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 268d (2 replies)

You'd only be giving them money if it's leased through a Toyota dealership or financed through Toyota's loan department.

I have a RAV4 that I financed through the dealer when I bought it, but I refinanced that bitch after like 2 months. The interest rate was unbelievably high. Glad to know I'm not giving any more money to fascist bullshit.

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 268d (1 reply)

Dealerships are such a giving scam! I worked at one when I first moved to a new town and the way they talk about customers behind their backs is disgusting! Truly dehumanizing them and turning them into nothing more than walking legal theft targets.

Furbag@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 267d

I also had the unfortunate experience of working at a dealership as my very first job and you are right. The level of customer service you get there is superficial and only extends to the veneer of courtesy they put up to lure you in. I would often hear service technicians and even some of the higher-ups complain about customers when they thought nobody else could hear them, or maybe they thought that since I was also in a customer service role, that I was "one of them" and would understand.

I'm thankful for my experiences in that job, however. I can't ever be tricked by a charismatic salesman, because I know deep down that there's a good chance that that salesman only sees me as a walking talking bag of money. I think that's a big reason I would never fall for Trump's grift either - he's literally no better than a used car salesman.

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 268d

I got it slightly used from not a dealership and got my own financing through my bank. So I extra didn't give them shit!

Good Lord I've seen the headlines but that photo paints one hell of a picture.

When you ride bikes you can minimize the amount of money you give to shitty people who already have too much money!

humble_boatsman@sh.itjust.works · 32 pts · 269d (1 reply)

I know its a lot of shocked not shocked but Toyota has been a consistent bull shit company on environmental impact. It actually did shock me to learn this

Toyota has been a consistent shit company

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 268d

The bar is set so low by their American peers that Toyota can flop over it.

ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com · 26 pts · 269d

Toyota already had been donating to the congresspeople in 2021 who were planning that coup by refusing to certify. So yep, if you haven't been already, please do.

mhague@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 268d

To us: A former Toyota CEO kisses the ring.

To Trump: Mr. Domo Arigato bent the knee, this will look good for me.

To MAGA: We don't want your jap crap, go back to China.

Dudes at a NASCAR event. The sport that had to specifically root out racists which was somehow a bad thing for conservatives.

Horsey@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 268d

I’d say we should boycott Toyota, but their 220mi range piece of shit EV with a 9” display for 45k$ pretty much does them in without trying.

Formfiller@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 268d

Japan loves facism

jaykrown@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 269d (3 replies)

Toyota is seriously missing out on electric vehicles. Hybrids are overly complicated.

Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 269d

Agreed. Why drive around with two complete drivetrains.

Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 268d (1 reply)

Didn't they fuck up by doubling down on fuel cells too?

Tilgare@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 268d

I mean, it's a fuck up in hindsight... They clearly saw something in the technology that the rest of the market hasn't. It IS a viable option for EV's, but it feels at this point like it's a failed standard akin to Betamax vs VHS or HD-DVD vs Blu-ray. We've got thousands of BEV chargers across America now, and about 50 hydrogen fueling stations (in California only). I don't know if there is a market for both at this point... And there hasn't been for a while. Unbelievable that they're STILL sticking with it.

GraniteM@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 269d (4 replies)

Honest question: Assume that I do in fact need a car. I've been driving Toyota since college on account of it hitting pretty much the sweet spot of affordability and reliability. Is there another car company that hits around that same realm that is less morally compromised?

BigDiction@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 268d

For a new vehicle probably Mazda or Honda.

I’d love to give Ford a chance but the post 2020 reliability has not looked great. I had 07 Escape for 15 years that was an absolute work horse.

RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -1 pts · 269d (2 replies)

I don't think there are any 'good' car companies, due to extreme size they are all fuvkheads one way or another, often in many ways

TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 269d (1 reply)

less morally compromised

Basically nothing is a binary.

RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 269d

There was that investigation into privacy before that showed that literally every company they tested failed horribly. It might literally just be 'they all suck horribly'.

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · 9 pts · 269d (2 replies)

Is he driving a Ford?

50MYT@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 269d (1 reply)

Yeah the photo in front of the ford makes it funny

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · 3 pts · 269d

I think he's driving an F-150 there too though.

aesthelete@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 268d

I still haven't gotten over hearing that recording of people who were about to die because they couldn't use the brakes in their Toyota.

Seems I was right to not forget.

Bosht@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 268d

Jesus Christ may as well have done a photo op with Trump's micro peen in his mouth wtf. I actually liked Toyota up until this point.

udon@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 268d (2 replies)

What exactly does this "investing" mean here? Do they essentially donate money to Trump? Do they buy American factories/companies? Do they build new factories? Do they just announce and investment and then nothing happens for a long time?

In other words, who makes the profit here? Did they rip off the Trump without him noticing or did they get ripped off and can't do anything about it? Is "investing" another way of saying "ASiAnS BuY MuRIcaN ComPnAIEs!!!1!" that is more popular with the maga crowd?

All the reports I've seen about this just regurgitate the government speech and give no useful details what's really going on here.

bitwolf@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 268d

My guess is they're capitulating for forgiveness on the EV mandates.

The best Toyotas seem to be just the plain inline 4's and inline 6's. They did not have a good run IMO with the Prius platform on their SUVs and probably are bootlicking to get exemptions made.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 268d

What exactly does this “investing” mean here?

Check's in the mail, babe. I promise I'm good for it. Honey, don't be mad, just let your tariffs down a little. Come on, it'll be just like old times.

xxce2AAb@feddit.dk · 8 pts · 269d

What? Didn't his sincere smile win you over? No? Me neither.

fin@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 269d (2 replies)

Damn. I'll never buy Toyota. I hope Mazda won't do that.

UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 269d (1 reply)

Mazda and Toyota are partners. Mazdas are actually more reliable than Toyota now. Toyota has a massive recall fir blowing up engines. Their new land cruiser rides like shit and has less interior room than a ford ranger which rides better also.

https://www.iseecars.com/compare/ford-ranger-vs-toyota-land_cruiser

fin@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 269d

Mazda and Toyota are partners.

I know, but I believe they are different

morphballganon@lemmynsfw.com · 6 pts · 269d

I'm boycotting the car industry and big oil by not having a car in the first place.

Yes I know. You couldn't do it and you need a car. Your car is so very practical. You think I should also have a car because they're so useful. I know my food is hauled by trucks burning oil and that I contribute unwillingly anyway. But I arranged my life around the fact that I don't need one, and I'm glad to avoid contributing to this horrible industry.

Fuck cars.

jaykrown@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 269d (2 replies)

Find me a remote job that pays over $50k a year and I'll get rid of my car. Thanks!

Fuck fuck fuck. I was looking for a reliable single cab truck with 4wd and diff locks to convert into a camper. A 90s J70 seemed like a perfect option, but even though I wouldn't be giving toyota any money this feels wrong now... I wonder what other options even are there; L200 is too small for a camper, anything land rover is so unreliable I won't dare go overlanding, and good luck finding parts for older american trucks over here (besides, Ford&GM bowed to fascists all the same)

lemming741@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 268d (3 replies)

So basically Toyota is going to suck now.

Junkers_Klunker@feddit.dk · 4 pts · 269d

Toyota, quality wise, has been going downhill for the last 25 years. They used to be, like old Mercedes’ and really old Peugeots, buy once cry once cars, but now they’re no better than any other car.
