I have the perfect place for you to make a pilgrimage to. In Sicily near the coastal beach resort town of Taormina there is a town atop of the nearby mountain called Castelmola. The trek up the mountain is amazing and the views are incredible. Your reward for the journey is in that town there is a bar called Bar Turrisi, this is your new bucket list destination.
Alternatively, they could go to one of the "penis temples" in Japan. I know that there is more than one, because a Google search turned up this one, and I have been to another in southern Osaka Prefecture.
The one that I went to was actually devoted to fertility and appeasing The souls of aborted/miscarried babies, but it had its fair share of penises as well.
Lol. Oh for sure. Knife and straight razor sharpening has been my hobby for the past 30 years. My daily driver EDC is currently a red Microtech Ultratech knife and an Olight ArkPro in zombie green.
I never quite wrapped my mind around knife/flashlight collecting. I have one of each that I EDC and I did quite a bit research to find the ones I like the best (Benchmade Bugout and Wurkkos TS22 - both in green). Carrying anything else would mean leaving home the one I like the most which doesn't make any sense.
I don't judge. It's just one of those things I have no theory of mind for.
Maybe the closest thing I have to a collection is seeds, but I plant those to grow stuff. Is that a collection? Maybe! I guess youâre not disqualified for using the things in your collection.
There have been times when Iâve thought that but I think the test has to be based on how much it affects or doesnât affect the rest of your life. If youâre spending huge amounts of time and money on it while the rest of your life and relationships suffer, itâs probably an issue. If itâs mostly a hobby that occupies a reasonable portion of your life, itâs fine.
It does bother me though that some collecting hobbies seem to be mostly about spending money and trying to achieve a complete set rather than a mixture of stuff of collecting, repairing, researching, and visiting people, and going to shows etc. Iâm all about variety in life though, so that may be a personal bias of mine.
It's just so useful to just have another one to grab when the one you're using runs out, and let that one charge in the meanwhile. I can also just take two in my bag and never run dry.
Common handtools. I have at least 2 - 3 of each. One set in my work truck and another in the toolshed. What can I say - I'm a sucker for tools.
Traditional hatchets. If I see an old hand-made axe head for sale with or without a handle for a decent price I'll buy it because they're not making more of them. I'll gladly sell/hand over one to who ever needs, appreciates and promises to look after one.
Bikes. I don't sell the old when I buy new one. It's worth more to me as a bike than as the money I'd get from it.
Hand carts. I don't know how I ended up with two but here we are.
If I see an old hand-made axe head for sale with or without a handle for a decent price I'll buy it because they're not making more of them.
Doing a quick search, I see multiple companies that say that they hand-make axeheads. Now, it's probably cheaper to get them secondhand, but I don't think that the supply of new ones will run dry, as a business making handmade axeheads probably doesn't see a lot of economy of scale.
We specialize in offering professionally hand-forged axes by makers who have been in the business for decades, so you find the last wood-cutting axe or wood hatchet you ever buy.
Lehmans, US. "The letter is the last initial of blacksmith who tempered the axe.", says that the axe is "Maine made", the handle is made by "an Amish family a few miles from our store", that the steel comes "from New York", but doesn't explicitly say where the blacksmith is.
I was refering to traditional Finnish vintage axes specifically - not hand made ones broadly. BillnÀs, Kellokoski and Fiskars for example. Those are no longer being made.
Headphones. I have my commuting headphones, walking headphones, working headphones, video game headphones, music headphones... I also have two pairs of earphones.
I could get down to two pairs of headphones and one pair of earphones.
I have a few different wireless earbuds for different uses and devices, and like 5 sets of headphones because they all have different sounds/uses as well. I definitely understand this ridiculous!
Yup. I have way too many headphones because I wanted to hear the different sound signatures. 90% of the time I'm either listening to my AirPods Pro or Grado SR325s. The other 10% is Koss PortaPro. Why do I have so many headphones?
I have some bone conducting headphones for just about everything, a pair of ear buds for everything else. Generally I'm wearing ear protection with my headphones and what type I want determines which headphones I'm wearing.
I have multiple of the bone conducting ones. The main ones. The backup ones for when I forget them. The backup backup ones that was two generations ago and the microphone crapped out on that lives in my desk at work in case I forgot the backup ones.
Electric razors. I have one for the left hand and one for the right. I bought one several years ago and was gifted the same model about the same time. Didn't have the heart to tell them I already had one. Turns out shaving with two razers goes pretty fast.
I cannot fathom how you ended up with two sets of Clerks: The Animated Series on DVD, but I am 100% sure that's enough evidence that we should be friends.
A person could luck into their first set of Clerks: The Animated Series on DVD; but I believe obtaining a second set of Clerks: The Animated Series on DVD can only be evidence of excellent taste and some decent moral fiber.
I find that if I really like a product, I don't want to have to go to the trouble of finding a new one in future if I lose/break the first one. Often, even if it's something that you wouldn't realistically expect to break, I'll buy a few of it just in case, like clipboards, or document cases.
Another is consumables. For example, I bought an unusual eraser holder that has replaceable inserts for it. I really like it, so of course I had to buy 20 years' worth of inserts because I can almost guarantee they'll stop making inserts before I'm finished using the product.
For bulk food prep, it's often easier to work in batches. For example, I might make 5 days' worth of breakfasts at once, and store them in the fridge. In that case, I need 5 * <number of people> worth of containers. I also need to account for contingencies: what if a guest stays over? I don't strictly need that many identical containers, but it makes for a good system
Gaming computers. I have a laptop, a desktop, a Steam Deck, a light handheld and a smartphone. Not to mention a few older consoles, but they don't get much use anymore. The others all do.
I love trackballs, but no amount of mouse acceleration can make them not a pain in the ass on multiple high res monitors. I love em, but I just canât use em.
My keyboard from around 2000 is still in use and the only keyboard I ever bought. It looks a little oldschool and beaten up by now, but I type on it every day since like quarter of a century. Probably the best 50⏠I ever invested.
Nail clippers. I kept losing nail clippers so I bought a pack of 10 and put two in each of the places I'd expect to be able to find them. I think I'm down to only having four now, so it might be time to buy another 10.
Lip balms, nail clippers, and we have a lot of laundry baskets despite living in a 3 room apartment. Two or three per room and three/four in the main laundry collecting area.
10mm wrenches. Saw a deal online years ago for 20 wrenches for like 20 bucks. I was still doing field work at the the time so 10 and 11 mm were common purchases for me. They didn't break, so there was no need for an expensive warranty. They just got misplaced, usually by a trainee who didnt have their own tools.
It was frustrating because buy even one cheap wrench was $10, but a kit of 8 or 10 wrenches could be bought on sale for $20. I have a few of those kits too, and a few socket kits. I have yet to use most of the pieces in 20 years. I mostlt just needed the 10, 11, and 13mm.
A 20 pack of 10mm for cheap? I couldn't pass that up. Then I stopped working field. Now I have a shed full of tools that I might never use again. Nothing wrong with them except some old batteries maybe. I refuse to get rid of them in case I have to back to field work. But it makes me look like a hoarder.
I have four copies of Skyrim and havenât even played it.
I have seven coffee makers (various sorts, sizes, and materials). I use 3 regularly.
More generally, anything that I use frequently, like tools, I have multiples of because I misplace things a lot. Having multiples means itâs more likely to find things when I need them, without having to hunt them down.
Yup. Donât even need one. But three? Peak useless (but fun).
E: donât take me for a hater. Cars are my hobby. Iâd have a fleet of unique and interesting cars if I could. But thereâs no way you canât have a little self awareness that having multiple cars is kinda useless.
I like to have a special car for every occasion. Twisty backroads, or a track day? Roadster. Long highway cruise, or maybe moving some bulky stuff? I have a hearse, which sits on an '80s Cadillac limo chassis. Aside from commutes, I only drive my daily on the rare occasion I have more than one passenger.
If I ever get a third "fun" car, it'll probably something like a Jeep for off-roading.
I was gonna say mine arenât âclassicâ but the newest vehicle I have is a 2007âŠ. One junk class daily driver plus a mega-hauler truck to tow around my track-day car.
Chances to make a change in my miserable, depressive life. It only takes one opportunity to capture, one chance to seize and decide to do things differently, but alas, I'm not there yet. Thankfully, I have multiple - nay - an unlimited amount of chances ahead.
Materialistically speaking, off the top of my head, maybe my physical security keys (Yubico)? I have a backup key so that I don't get locked out of my accounts in case I loose my main key, but I could manage without the backup. Jeesh, it's hard to come up with something material that I have multiple of since I'm a minimalist and literally have like ONE plate and ONE spoon/fork/knife if you catch my drift.
One lives in my backyard shed, for cleanups and dust collection.
One lives in my garage, for cleaning the cars.
Our house is split level, so we have one for upstairs and another one for downstairs. All to save carrying it up and down the six steps that divide the front and back of the house. These two are the same make and model.
Double edge safety razors: if I had to choose only one, Rockwell 6S is enough, but they really perform different and have different feel. I mostly use four or five on a daily basis, but it is more than necessary.
Also, fountain pens: it's pretty much the same, TWSBI pen(s) would suffice, but there are too many brands and models with different look and feel, hard to choose only one. Plus in case of pens multiple ones allow for use of different inks at the same time (those I also have multiple compared to the amount that would suffice, even in the same colour)
Guitars. I have a whole stable, including a couple of electrics (Strat and Les Paul), and a few acoustics (My favorite, a backup, another one with a nice tone that is also electric, and a nice travel/parlor guitar).
I also have a short scale electric bass, and an acoustic bass. Also a couple of nice ukuleles.
I'm still on the hunt for a small all-mahogany acoustic, a 12 string acoustic, and a good semi-hollow body that isn't white, red, or black. I'm also always looking for a good deal on a new electric bass. Also a banjo and mandolin.
I'm not in a band, I don't even play with others, I just like to record my own music, both originals and covers, that nobody ever hears but me. And I delusionally believe I need a shit-ton of guitars to do that.
Knives, I have a lot of knives. Always looking for that new look or different blade geometry. New fancy metal or accessories. Just always been a blade or edged weapon kind of guy.
I have a bunch of bows too. Into archery as well...
I enjoy collecting and modding them more than actually playing lol. Generally I suck at games.
Now I do play them. But I spend a lot more time figuring out better ways to use them and getting the best quality out of them possible, or trying to use og hardware but playing any game (like ps2 over ethernet)
We bought a washer/dryer combo. It wasn't cheap, but you could put two side by side in a regular laundry room. They are nice if you have kids or if clothes get forgotten in the washer with some frequency.
I would like to have a second one but it's a luxury I can't really justify.
I thought about using those but ruled them out. I am planning on using stackable units, a single washer drier combo unit doesnt really change anything. I still need multiple water hook ups and two drier vents, they use the same floor space and I donât need more counter space
You don't need dryer vents. You do need two water hookups but you can just add some Y connectors. Also they run on 120v so no electric work (probably, I don't know the actual current draw).
You do have to clean the lint traps every single time.
I understand you've done your research and know what you want. Posted mostly for other readers I guess.
Well, I have a bunch of stuff around here that serves no real purpose that I'm otherwise sentimentally attached to or think might be useful some day, but I'm not sure I have many duplicates, even loosely speaking.
The best(?) example is probably the fact I have 3 CRT TVs, none of which I use regularly. One is the main house TV but, since I don't use it much, I've never felt the need to upgrade it. The other two are portables that I'm keeping for if I ever get back into 8-bit computers.
Don't need to use them every day, but previously I could never find any of the three pairs I had. Then I realized that I have money and can go buy a dozen pairs of scissors.
Now it never takes me more than 30 seconds to find a pair of scissors. 10/10, would recommend this lifestyle.
Also, as others have mentioned, clothes sets. Work wear is not what I wear on my own time, including shoes. But I could just wear one set (either work or casual) and I don't think anyone would care.
Phones. Got my current along with the last 3 I had. I haven't disposed of them because I'm a little paranoid someone would reconstruct the contents of each phone if I just disposed of them.
Also, burned CDs/DVDs that are useless because they don't work. I'm not good and throwing away discs, which is why I still keep them.
I thought about saying loose bread ties, but those are generally so useful for when one breaks or you just need one.
Cajons. I have two, because after I got one my husband loved it and demanded i get another, basically. They are handy as bonus seats and as a barrier to keep dogs out though, on top of just being fun to thwack.
Computers. I could do everything I need to do on my threadripper workstation, but it's not as portable as my gaming rig. I move around a lot for work and wasn't thrilled with my steam decks performance plugged into a TV for some games. Then there is my limited home lab stuff that I could host on the workstation for a minimal hit to power consumption, but why do that when I have tons of older hardware I could piece together to do it. Then there are my multiple Atari STs that I've collected. One of them is my first computer which I've managed to keep for almost forty years. I also have a few classic macs and dozens of video games, all of which I could functionally duplicate with emulation. I like old hardware, and now it's not polluting the environment in a landfill.
I have two color laser printers. The old one is a Dell branded printer from about 15 years ago and was about the cheapest color laser printer you could buy at the time. It has some issues now particularly with color printouts, and combined with poor Linux support meant I went ahead and bought its replacement, a much nicer Brother model. But as the old printer can still give acceptable results for some things I'm keeping it until it runs out of toner which could be a while.
On top of that I still have an HP LaserJet 4 but that's been disconnected for a while. Still prints but desperately needs new rollers.
So, the oldest cordless drill I have is this old Black & Decker 12v thing, my dad bought it in like, 2002. It has a quick detaching chuck, and under the chuck is a 1/4" hex collet. So you can load a phillips or torx driver bit in that, then mount the chuck over it and chuck in a drill bit, then you can drill your pilot holes, pop the chuck off and drive screws.
And other than that minor innovative feature it's crap. The build quality on even consumer-grade power tools has increased a lot since I was in high school; I've got some of the new SB&D Craftsman tools that are a lot nicer to handle; that old B&D creaks and squeaks as it flexes in your hand, it's not overmolded and the bare ABS slips around in your grip, the controls feel like you're twisting lego bricks, the batteries are long out of production and it's the only tool I have that takes that standard, and it's a 20 year old brushed motor 12 volt tool; it's the size of my 20v drills but less powerful than my little 12v mini Bosch drill.
I recently converted my stove from gas to induction, but one of the casualties was my griddle top - steel griddle covering the entire stove. I loved playing short order cook or having all that space to toss around fried rice. I keep telling myself I donât need something like that but those Blackstone grills keep drawing me in
After a few years with a Blackstone I can confidently say it's fun, but not for everyone.
I got it thinking it would save some time, money, or effort. It did none of those things.
It's quick and easy if you have the support of a surrounding kitchen, but if you're having to drag everything you need with you outside to use it, set up an clean up take just as long or longer.
It's a huge attractant for rodents, but a clip on the grease drain fixed the problem of the rats getting to and shitting all over the cook top. But I occasionally find rat shit inside the grease bucket. I keep a liner with poison in there now.
It does genuinely make food better in some cases. Bacon and eggs just taste better coming off that thing. Fried rice is fantastic. Steaks an burgers come away with a great sear. I make a chopped cheese that I can't replicate inside the kitchen.
Cleaning up all of the grease is a pain. It fucking gets everywhere. Even with a lid, the second you open it grease is going to coat every surface within about 10 feet. Not much different than a kitchen griddle but I find that cleaning up the Blackstone takes a bit longer.
It's also built to fail. The cook top is fine, the burners are fine. The supporting structure might as well be made of paper. I had misaligned holes and don't dare use the bottle opener. The included gas line had to be replaced after a year as the safety tripped and couldn't be dislodged.
I enjoy my Blackstone. I really do. It doesn't do what I wanted it for but it does do a mighty mean breakfast.
I doubt spending more will fix the build quality issue. Just get you a bigger griddle. I have a 4 burner and it's fine. But it's also required more maintenance in it's few years with me than my mother in law's gas grill did over 20 years. It's just cheaply built. If that's important to you I'd look at other options. Id even go so far as to suggest, since you already have a gas grill, just getting a plate to fit inside it. Works exactly the same way, doesn't add an appliance.
The downside is they are custom sized and every grill is different. You canât really expect a plate for one grill to work n the next. Historically Iâve had grills last only 4-6 years. This one is more expensive so I hope itâll last but is already five years old
After thinking about this a bit and reading through this thread, I realized I might have a problem about always wanting spare things. I have more than one of a lot of things - lip balm, battery banks, phone & watch charging docks, dogs, headphones and earbuds (even two of the same kind), computers, pillows (I have spares of my main and body pillows), and the list goes on. I apparently need to re-evaluate my habits.

I've too considered making a shelve for my penis shaped "ornaments."
Shame to put something so aesthetically pleasing hidden away in a drawer - especially in my private bedroom where no outsider ever goes to.

I cannot fathom how you ended up with two sets of Clerks: The Animated Series on DVD, but I am 100% sure that's enough evidence that we should be friends.

Can openers, they're cheap, I keep losing them, buying them, and finding them.
2910000@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 231d
In that case, I need
5 * <number of people>worth of containers. I also need to account for contingencies: what if a guest stays over? I don't strictly need that many identical containers, but it makes for a good systemColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de · 19 pts · 231d

But it makes me look like a hoarder.

captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 230d

Grills
I recently converted my stove from gas to induction, but one of the casualties was my griddle top - steel griddle covering the entire stove. I loved playing short order cook or having all that space to toss around fried rice. I keep telling myself I donât need something like that but those Blackstone grills keep drawing me in
SippyCup@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 230d
AA5B@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 230d
Part of that seems like an argument for the more expensive models, LoL
SippyCup@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 230d
I doubt spending more will fix the build quality issue. Just get you a bigger griddle. I have a 4 burner and it's fine. But it's also required more maintenance in it's few years with me than my mother in law's gas grill did over 20 years. It's just cheaply built. If that's important to you I'd look at other options. Id even go so far as to suggest, since you already have a gas grill, just getting a plate to fit inside it. Works exactly the same way, doesn't add an appliance.
AA5B@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 230d
I might get a plate. Iâve been looking at them!
The downside is they are custom sized and every grill is different. You canât really expect a plate for one grill to work n the next. Historically Iâve had grills last only 4-6 years. This one is more expensive so I hope itâll last but is already five years old

I have more than one of a lot of things - lip balm, battery banks, phone & watch charging docks, dogs, headphones and earbuds (even two of the same kind), computers, pillows (I have spares of my main and body pillows), and the list goes on. I apparently need to re-evaluate my habits.
