So, ICE is scared that aggressive untrained people will use deadly force against them, and that afterwards the government will do nothing about it?

That's pretty much how everybody else has felt about ICE for a long time.

(The Halfway Post is a satire website)

Naich@lemmings.world · 105 pts · 211d (13 replies)

What's the fucking point in doing satire these days?

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 211d (10 replies)

We all cope in our own ways. This post is an amazing example of how we are not immune to propaganda, so... at least there's that?

logicbomb@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 211d (7 replies)

This post is an amazing example of how we are not immune to propaganda

This post isn't propaganda, though, so it's not that amazing of an example.

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 211d (5 replies)

Yeah and if this openly and unabashedly satirical post was still being treated like legit reporting, imagine how people must react to actual propaganda.

logicbomb@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 211d (4 replies)

Actual propaganda isn't true, though, or at least it requires an element of misleading in it. If ICE officials aren't actually concerned about people shooting them and claiming self-defense, then I'll eat my hat, as the old saying goes.

It's also not "openly and unabashedly satirical." You only think that because you recognize the source as satirical. To everybody else, it reads as clickbait.

Clickbait + true statements does not equal an amazing example of how we are not immune to propaganda.

Petter1@discuss.tchncs.de · 4 pts · 211d

Can be true, can be as simple as „make you think about that (so you don’t think about this)“

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 211d

Actual propaganda frequently is true, this is misleading in that it is not actually reporting news, just guessing something is true doesn't make it true, I didn't recognize the poster I went and looked it up trying to find a source and discovered it was posted by a very open satire site, and this seems like a really stupid thing for you to be trying to start a fight over.

kali_fornication@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 211d

Naich@lemmings.world · 11 pts · 211d (1 reply)

I wasn't criticising the satirist, more the world that is making satire impossible to differentiate from fact.

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 211d

Nah totally, I read it as a similar sentiment to "What's the point in doing anything". If that was off the mark I apologize. I just meant that we all cope in our own ways, even if some of them are somewhat windmill-tilting-y

CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 211d

In this case, perhaps to put the idea of shooting at ICE cars out into the universe without getting in trouble lol

chunes@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 211d

Because there's still plenty of wiggle room. You actually thought ICE officials were afraid of citizens?

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 211d

Not in this case.

Give it a month, max, before somebody with either the cojones or the ovaries required to do this, does it.

... This ... this is literally how the American Revolution started, at least from one sort of way of looking at it.

You have oppressive government forces killing and maiming enough randos long enough, eventually the randos start shooting back.

matlag@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 211d (2 replies)

With that said, if you were to end in the same situation, would the idea to actually run over an ICE agent so that he doesn't shoot you cross your mind?

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 211d (1 reply)

I really fail to see how that's relevant to the source being a satire news site.

matlag@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 210d

Mate, have you read the news in the last months, with special attention to the first days of this year? I understand it's satire and it's not real, but right now, people are having a really hard time to distinguish satire from real news.

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 211d (1 reply)

One of the biggest reasons why everything sucks right now is the prevelance of misinformation online. This isn't even trying to be misinformation, it took me literally five seconds to confirm that this is from a satire website, and yet when I posted it every other comment was engaging with this as though it were factual reporting.

I know everything sucks right now, but we can't start freely accepting lies as truth just because we're tired. If we do that, we lose completely.

AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 211d

My comment was more on the funny side tho. We live in a timeline so ludicrous that satire is having a hard time because the rapist always find a way to one-up them.

SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 211d (3 replies)

Eh, can't say I agree with Thomas Hobbes on this. ICE is acting in the exact opposite of the state of nature, they're the violent arm of the sovereign

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 18 pts · 211d (2 replies)

That's a blatant misunderstanding of what a Hobbesian sovereign is. According to Hobbes, a sovereign is a form of body politic derived from the consent of the governed. People form civilizations, understanding that by abiding by common agreements they can mutually improve the conditions and circumstances of their lives. Everyone is safer when we agree not to kill each other, and anyone who violates that norm loses the protection of the social contract. Hence, capital punishment as a penalty for murder.

What ICE is doing is violating the social contract and acting without the consent of the governed (bypassing congressional approval/oversight, ignoring established laws and constitutional rights, etc.). In effect, they're regressing us back to the conditions of the state of nature in which "might makes right" and "survival of the fittest," conditions which the social contract originated in order to overcome.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 43 pts · 211d

It's almost as if they're projecting since they know that it's standard practice for them to jump in front of moving vehicles so they have an excuse to open fire and claim self defense.

They're literally accusing people of what they have been doing for at least a decade now.

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 36 pts · 211d

Well, they should be worried.

Fleur_@aussie.zone · 33 pts · 211d (9 replies)

I seriously doubt you're making it to the jury stage of the trial if you open fire on police

MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works · 32 pts · 211d (4 replies)

Renee Good didn't open fire on police and still didn't make it to a jury trial. When unarmed, peaceful people are executed as though they're violent protesters, there's no longer any real reason to be unarmed, peaceful people.

This federal government wants people to open fire on police. This would justify a further police state, martial law, and cancelling the midterm elections that they're definitely on pace to lose disastrously. Natural causes is taking its sweet time, but even if it weren't I don't think the next guy would change a thing unless his owners told him to.

AA5B@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 211d (2 replies)

Protesters also don’t deserve to be executed

MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 211d (1 reply)

Agreed, but they'll try to argue that violent protesters could kill thousands of innocent people, so killing them is the morally right thing to do. Here, they're arguing that Renee Good was a domestic terrorist that was using her vehicle as a weapon to try to kill the ICE guy, even though it's blatantly obvious that that's not what was happening in the slightest.

I'm just saying that they're escalating. They're hoping that people either stay home because they're afraid of being executed just for being outside, or retaliate and permit them to escalate further. And even an extreme retaliation will not eradicate the fascism, so I'm not sure what the right move is now that we're at this point.

athatet@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 211d

They will escalate regardless of what we do. They already have been.

How's work?

AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works · 23 pts · 211d (6 replies)

Well yeah that's kind of how rules and laws are supposed to work.

That's kind of the entire purpose of having a system of government. If a government doesn't exist to protect the people who pay for it, what's the point of it even existing?

Pretty sure the people intentionally destroying the U.S. are aware of that, but it's always kind of a head scratcher to learn the people that are carrying out their orders have been so busy goose-stepping and commiting crimes on their behalf, they haven't really picked up on it.

I'm really not sure why I have to explain to other adults that we all benefit as a society from a system that promotes equality and protects the majority from harm and exploitation.

When you help these people in their never ending war on equality, you're helping to further cement a system of government that enables exploitation and removes any expectation of protection for the majority.

That is what you're working towards on behalf of a billionaire class. A world where they're protected by the system, but we're all expendable, including you. That is what people mean when they call you class traitors. If that term offends you it's probably because you're not understanding or recognizing your own exploitation.

You've handed over civil rights and civil liberties for the "freedom" to participate in a caste system which protects an overclass you will never be part of. Your sole purpose in the system is to help keep them propped up above the rest of society by enforcing their rules and acting as cannon fodder that serves to insulate them from the rest of the masses.

Mudsill theory is the proposition that there must be, and always has been, a lower class or underclass for the upper classes and the rest of society to rest upon. The term derives from a mudsill, the lowest threshold that supports the foundation for a building. The theory was first articulated by James H. Hammond, a Democratic United States senator from South Carolina and a wealthy Southern plantation owner, in a speech on March 4, 1858. Hammond argued that every society must find a class of people to do menial labor, whether called slaves or not, and that assigning that status on a racial basis followed natural law, while the Northern United States' social class of white wage laborers presented a revolutionary threat. Mudsill theory and similar rhetoric has been dubbed "the Marxism of the Master-Class" which fought for the rights of the propertied elite against what were perceived as threats from the abolitionists, lower classes and non-whites to gain higher standards of living

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 8 pts · 211d (1 reply)

And this one too.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 211d (3 replies)

The thing is, they view it as a fair trade to support that in exchange for the opportunity to be a part of that system. They might not be the galactic emperor, but they don't seem to mind being a stormtrooper. Everyone else is just peasants and rebel scum in their eyes.

To them, they're high enough on the social hierarchy to have plenty of people to look down on, and that's all they need to feel better about themselves.

AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 211d (2 replies)

True, but they shouldn't act so surprised when they find themselves thrown under the bus. They probably always will, but again, it's because they're too ignorant to recognize their own exploitation.

This may be satire but it does really capture that casual assumption they seem to share that everyone else has the same lust for violence that they do. Don’t advertise on social media, just buy it.

Store it disassembled, but get some ammo. This way you can put it back together but they can’t claim you were armed if they come in with a no-knock warrant. Kinda hard if your pistol is in 17 separate bits in a locked case.

What this will do is show statistics of gun ownership go up in blue states.

nomy@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 211d

I tell people as often as I can, especially my trans and bipoc friends; now is the time. Get a couple guns (a long one and a short one) and learn how to use them. Learn some basic first aid, you really just need to know how to stabilize someone. Start networking with like-minded people in your communities. The police will not protect us, they’ve proven they’ll happily club senior citizens to the ground and shoot any protesters in the face with rubber bullets while escorting a rightwing murderer to safety. Iran was a secular, liberal state until almost 1980 when they (mostly legitimately) elected an Islamist theocracy; it could happen here.

Our current situation really is the culmination of almost 70 years of rightwing efforts. It’s a long listen but worth checking out How Conservatism Won by Robert Evans. He lays out in a clear concise way “how a consortium of rich failsons got together to fund a network of right wing think tanks and shift American culture in a fun new direction. (note: it was not actually fun at all).” They’ve been very successful and those think tanks are now pipelines used to funnel ideological purists into powerful positions like our current Supreme Court.

The shadowy cabals the rightwing says are behind everything is classic projection again, they're controlled by shadowy cabals of rich people. One of the primary ghouls/traitors responsible for the attempted overthrow of our government on J6 was Roger Stone, the same traitorous ratfucker who began his career working for Nixon and has a fucking Nixon tattoo on his back. It's really impossible to overstate how bad these people are and they're winning.

The coup was successful, they're in power and if they don't want to give it up they won't.

Get to know people in your community. Take an interest in growing food, learn how to fix things. Establish secondary lines of communication and start preparing.

If they shoot someone raiding a house I don't know if there would be a trial at this point though. I'm not saying you should do some solo stand-your-ground thing and get yourself killed, but it doesn't seem like it would make a difference if you even owned a gun or not as far as their legal justification, even if there was a trial they could say they feared for their life. Nothing to do with headline which was already confusing, because brownshirts were volunteers. ICE is a US army division deployed to silence dissent, under cover of being a purely anti-immigrant enforcement army division. The National Guard becomes a force protection service for ICE. The brownshirts were paramilitary meaning a technically independent of government group even if they get "informal" government (actually nazi party funded brownshirt leadership) funding which leaders can optionally fund pay to "soldiers". ICE is simply government salaried and controlled soldiers.
