Had no idea it was a movie, was a slogan at video rental places (that were pretty much out of business by 2008) before I was born. Seeding torrents is a p deece analogy for the benefit it provided
Is he? I figured he just sold out and didn't want to jeopardize any of his contracts due to calls for political violence. Still disappointing, but I haven't seen any evidence that he's actually a Trumper.
i used to work retail, what annoyed me more than the cart stuff was when people just left refrigerated items they didnt want anymore on shelves. is it rly that hard to walk a couple extra seconds to put it back? just spoils food, attracts bugs
With us if it was still physically cold to the touch, we could put it back. Condensation on the milk jug kinda thing. Anything past that and it had to be tossed
You misunderstand. I didn't mean, "it's fine to put random crap you find misplaced around the store back in the fridge". I meant it's fine for the people who put it on the shelf to instead put it back in the correct refrigerated/frozen section.
OFC you shouldn't put now unthawed crap back in the freezer or now warm things back in the fridge unless you know it hasn't been out long... That should be common knowledge. I assumed noone would be dumb enough to take that interpretation, but here we are...
At one of the bigger groceries I've been to, the wheels would lock up if you got too far from the store. Well, we'd parked outside that range so the wheels locked up and I had to awkwardly drag the full cart to the car.
Being a good person, I went to drag it back to the return spot. The wheels did not unlock. Dragged it all the way back anyway.
But given this, I can see why someone might just abandon their cart if the wheels are locked.
It doesn't create any new jobs. It just creates a task the already employed people at the store need to deal with. Walmart claims they have dedicsted cart wranglers, but every store I have worked at just made CAP go out and do it during lulls in other tasks.
Omg I bitched out these two ladies at the theater many years ago. Left a massive mess of popcorn, left drinks, everything. I asked if they were going to leave it, they said they're helping the theater employees keep their jobs. I followed the bitches out of the theater and called them out in front of an employee cleaning another theater. Grown ass women. I was getting loud, they ran into the women's restroom to avoid me, I left after that. Fucking hate people.
Maybe about plugging in devices to charge when you're done with them? Schools use laptops a lot now, but don't think they're communal ones on carts anymore.
To really capture the full spirit of it, I think the the closest thing would be a YouTuber asking you to join their Patreon. The point of the Be Kind Rewind slogan was that you putting in a little effort now meant that the video store clerk or the next renter wouldn't have to do it and could instead do their actual job or just watch the movie in convinence. If everyone did it by default, there would be no need for the slogan and the stickers.
YouTube Patreon plugs hit all those marks. It's a small inconvenience that you do because it means they can do their actual work in producing media and the next guy can watch content without having the inconvenience of paying for it. If everyone did it by default, they wouldn't need to mention it in every episode. The only real difference is you're trading your physical effort for your commodified effort.
I disagree, 'be kind rewind' is a free action, whereas joining someone's patreon involves money. Not everyone can pay for patreon, but everyone had the ability to rewind.
Even as a child, I never really understood this concept and I am old enough to remember going to video stores a lot. But you're rewinding one way or the other. Why does it matter if you're doing it when you just get the cassette or when you're done watching it?
And video stores were super adamant about this too.
If everyone does it, it improves the overall experience of everyone, as you said, at absolutely no additional personal cost, financial or otherwise. You get home from Blockbuster, insert the tape, flop on the couch with the still warm takeout food, and begin your movie night without any friction. At the end, you placed the cassette on rewind and switched to cable to watch something else until you dozed off, or kid's bedtime came or whatever.
The other experience, you insert the tape, flop on the couch and…wait, the VHS says the videotape is at the end. Ok, then put the VHS into rewind, it was usually slow, then use the rewinder. You have to get up, take the cassette out, put it in the rewinder, wait a few minutes. “Daddy I want to watch the movie now.” “Patience, just wait a minute.” “Honey, the food is getting cold sit down to eat.” “Wait, the rewinder is do…shit, it swallowed the tape again.” Take it out, clear the jam, manually wind the tape, put the tape back in the VHS, it is gentler. Wait some more. Now start the movie. At the end, should you rewind?
It was just one of those things that, are simple, nice and cheap for everyone. Not doing it is just a mild annoyance for others, but it costs you nothing. It was truly a test of morality back then. Good people are those who still do the right thing even if no one is watching.
Yeah, that's kind of the point. It was benign, you didn't have to do it. If you didn't do it, you wouldn't hurt anyone. But if you did it, it displays a modicum of kindness towards an invisible fellow that speaks of a considerate moral character.
Ya, I'm just going to say no. Morality has nothing to do with it, nor does kindness in the ethical sense. Not every courteous or considerate act automatically rises to the level of a moral concern.
If you feel that way, fine, you're entitled to that view, and there's nothing wrong with it. But objectively, choosing not to rewind a tape causes no harm, violates no duty, and infringes on no one's rights.
At best, rewinding it is a small courtesy. It does not constitute a moral or ethical dilemma.
To be fair to myself, I do have very clear memories of rewinding tapes prior to returning them to the video store.
I think I did it because I was instructed to and for no other reason aside from it literally costing nothing but a minute in the tape player.

Retail, not restaurant. Think groceries. It's packaged. It's fine to put back if it's still sealed.

My Dad tried to argue "it creates jobs".
He really didn't want to accept that trolley pushers aren't given more time to fetch the carts.
All it does is make the job harder.
