The Republican-led Senate on Wednesday rejected the latest Democratic attempt to halt Donald Trump’s war in Iran, turning aside a resolution that would require the U.S. to withdraw forces from the conflict until Congress authorizes further action.
The 47-52 vote was the fourth time this year that the Senate has voted to cede its war powers to the president in a conflict that Democrats say is illegal and unjustified.
Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against it. Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky voted with Democrats.

This is why a very minimum requirement for an actual democracy includes recall voting.
Dude just straight up decided to betray his constituents and nothing can be done to remove him.

Reminder not to joke about encouraging people to do incredibly cool and sexy crimes, the FBI are not required to show context when they're showing your and other peoples posts to a judge for getting a warrent.

Was he? Or did brain damage turn him republican? Because it seems like there is something mentally wrong with most republicans.
BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 124d
Studies showed that people who trended conservative tended to have more active parts of the brain for emotions, especially fear. They're older and finding anything older than 2 months on the internet is like archeology.

I came here to mention this. Glad I'm not alone. I do not understand why we can't recall or impeach Congress members by vote.
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 11 pts · 125d
Because then the people might recall them and put in politicians who do what they want. And that's bad for the people who don't want what the people want; the capitalist class whom finances their campaigns.
orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 125d
Democracy bad.
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 11 pts · 125d
Bourgeois democracy is designed to defend the interests of the bourgeoisie over other classes. This isn't a flaw inherent to democracy, this is a flaw inherent to capitalism.
orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 125d
I agree with this, which probably explains the nuance lacking in the previous statement.
couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip · -4 pts · 124d
Are you going to replace them with the republican candidate?
orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 124d
Why does everything have to be so unequivocal or binary? He's not who they voted for now. Should they have to endure it?
FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 124d
Easy solution is the ousted candidate's party gets to choose a temporary replacement, but a new election must be held at the very next election to find a permanent replacement be they Democrat or Republican (whomever the people elect). Easy peasy.
NutWrench@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 124d
I would also add "no confidence" recall voting and a two term limit, so politicians can't form these decades-long relationships with their billionaire owners.
BygoneNeutrino@lemmy.world · -23 pts · 124d
I don't know, man. I'm a Democrat because I support policies like marijuana legalization and free healthcare. The conflict in Iran is pretty low on my agenda. I wouldn't feel particularly betrayed if he was my elected official.
I never understood bipartisanship. My opinions and beliefs span the entire political spectrum. It feels like people think that anything supported by Republicans must be anti-Democrat.

No, he was a racist and a zionist before he was elected, we just chose not to see it. The alternatives in the primary were just as bad. This was lost when Fetterman was the left most candidate in the primary.

All it takes to be a Democratic elected official is to run as a party member and get elected. He did those things. He's a Democrat. The Democratic party is just a lot more right wing at its extremes (and overall) than folks like to admit.

Why not just draft a bill that is a formal declaration of war or immediate cease and desist of war activities of it doesn't pass? Force the Republicans to formally stain themselves with war.
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 11 pts · 125d
That's not a thing, you can't make a law that has effects if it doesn't pass.
MagicShel@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 125d
Well they ought to be able to. Make it like a vote of confidence in the war. Either we're at war or the process to continue trumps aggression fails.
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 7 pts · 125d
So there is the War Powers Resolution act, which requires the president get congressional approval within 60 days of hostilities. Obama's admin made up some bullshit why it didn't apply to his wars, and Trump will probably ignore it all together.
0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 124d
How bloody convenient, eh?
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 2 pts · 124d
A law asking the president to do a thing is unenforceable anyway, since the president would be the one enforcing it.
All congress can do is impeach presidents until they come up with one that does the thing they want or stop funding the military.

... and THIS is how Rs show their compliance when the minority.
BoTh PaRtIeS can stop this "supermajority" nonsense at ANY TIME. But, from their point of view, that makes popular legislation too easy to pass, and they don't want that, do they?
Instead, they ¯\(ツ)/¯
If memory serves this "supermajority filibuster" circus started in the 1970s. This is a parliamentary rule ONLY. It's not law. It's not in the constitution. It requires only a simple majority vote to erase. They pass legislation they really want without it all of the time, by making it an "exception" to the parliamentary rule (also done through simple majority vote). There are hundreds of "exceptions" to the super majority rule. This is what they want to pass.
So, this is a fucking circus that they can stop at any time. For example, Democrats could have decided "enough is enough" when Biden was in office after the monstrosity that was Trump, and used the "nuclear option" (that's what they call it) to revert to simple majority vote to pass laws. Then, they could have passed lots of very popular legislation, a new New Deal, so to speak; 70% of American voters want universal healthcare, for example... 90% of Democrats want this.
What did the Democrats do for their own voters?
¯\(ツ)/¯
