Seeing how all brexit negotioations revolved around ireland, why yes I think it is totally plausible that WW3 is started by some northern irish fisherman fishing a few kilometers too far south.
Are you implying that fiction written way in the past cannot accurately predict current events? What's next, no flying cars and public use hoverboards in 2015 (alright, they were actually pretty accurate with millionaire Biff Tannen)?
People here are talking like WW3 didn't already start. How long after Franz Ferdinand was shot did people decide that was the start of WW1/The Great War?
Most people who die in wars are civilians. Especially if WW3 goes nuclear, that would probably be most of them. However that is basically just nuking all major cities in China or so.
Committing to any real world dates was a fundamental misstep. They knew it was a bad idea from the start! That's the whole reason stardates were invented! But they couldn't help themselves.
Counterpoint: they should have just kept real world dates without worrying that they "didn't happen." We all know Star Trek is made up. Stop trying to reconcile it with real history.
Not my preference. Star Trek was made to be about our future, not the future of an alternate past.
SNW seems to have formalized the concept of a sliding timeline, attributed to temporal cold war shenanigans. I hate that justification, but the sliding timeline approach is probably the best one for how the franchise has developed. The Eugenics Wars are will happen 20 to 30 years from now... whenever now is.
Counterpoint to your counterpoint: we do not refer to BCE dates by the calendars of their time...the original date as it was referred to then may be documented, but everything from our time referencing them is converted to the BCE/CE scale.
And for good reason. Could you imagine if we still referred to events that happened > ~1400 years ago as "the harvest season of the second year of king Louie"?
As contemporaries of the stardate era, only a total nerd would know how people of a given historic era would refer to their calendar. Most people, assumedly, would have learned from resources scaled to a stardate calendar.
It's not the dating system I'm concerned about, I'm not bothered whether they use stardates or CE. I think it was unnecessary to adjust the Trek timeline in SNW because the 90s had passed and the Eugenics Wars hadn't happened.
I always think we are cursed to be emotional creatures, who need to vent our deepest darkest urges so that we could emerge better than before. A lot of scholars think even if a major catastrophe happens in our lifetime, a new and better system usually emerges, just as it happened in history. The problem is, and I always say this, it will become worse before it gets better.
i’m ok if the owning class suffers in the aftermath. maybe everyone gets one of those worms that crawls up your pee hole but all it does is hang out there and itches and complains about how tiny its new dick home is.

Star Trek promised us Irish unification two years ago, so I'm not holding my breath

I guess this needs to happen for WW3 to start. Clearly.

If I recall correctly... Star Trek said ... 2010, right? ... I probably don't recall correctly.

I could easily see nukes being dropped on the US, albeit they'd mysteriously only target Blue states and historically Blue cities.
justaman123@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 112d
There's only like 5 red cities and they all have fewer than a million residents. So the blue city moniker basically just means large city

I honestly doubt, that it would take that long. Nukes can end a war pretty quickly.
marcos@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 113d
Nukes can fast-forward the world into a late-war environment in a couple of hours. But it's not actually known if they can end a war.
Unless you are talking about those "Earth's crust destroying" nukes. But no country has actually built those.
