Technology connections remains awesome thankfully. Hell him touching on politics made me respect him more as he did it sparingly because he felt an obligation to use his platform to speak up
He tapped perfectly into that zeitgeist where the world is falling apart but we are still making entertainment, having kids, doing laundry. So many others refuse to acknowledge the oligarchical elephant in the room (looking at you, Legal Eagle) and I get that's how they make their living so can't go off the deep end but the tone deaf-ness of NOT acknowledging is so frustrating.

I also think it's the sort of person both fields attract. Comics are often cynical and edgy while still having a lot of empathy for people, which is a really helpful perspective for writing great horror.

Currently he has 4-5 videos going over the Trump phone scam and calling out the Trump family for it. He and Coffeezilla were the ones who reported the big Trump Phone data breach. The hacker who discovered it went to them after Trump's scam company ignored him.
The STEAM, arts & crafts bit of YouTube has kinda remained the same in most cases or even gotten better. Think of any creator that would go to Open Sauce and they're likely still as good as you remember.
I watch a lot of arts and crafts YouTubers and my kids love anyone doing wacky engineering projects. I’ve been disappointed by Mark Rober’s trajectory though. He was always a bit of a bro, but it’s ramped up big time and he seems to be more focused on flair and less on the engineering.
I grew up on builder youtube and I've had to leave channels like Veritasium and Mark Rober in the past due to the clear corporate influence that ruined the content for me. What was really the line for me was when a bunch of big channels started pushing pro-military slop disguised as engineering content. No Mark Rober i don't neef to hear you glaze the military. A few smaller channels have also done military content but i mostly excuse it because its usually years in the past and I'd bet most of them vehemently disagree with the actions of the US military. Like do I love that William Osman did an egg drop off a Navy ship? no. Do i think Big Willy would glaze the military? absolutely not. is he still part of my dream blunt rotation? yes.
This but in reverse with The Amazing Atheist: last i checked he'd come out as bi, hates that he spawned a lot of shitty stuff, and seems generally fine though a bit abrasive.
Mandy and Sseth are basically the same (the former more than the latter, Sseth is markedly more stable now) and have also stayed relevant for a decade or so in the adult gaming "subculture". And thank God for that. Charlie (penguinz) fell off like half a decade (EDIT: actually, over a decade ago, I'm just in my 30s so time is starting to mesh) ago at least, but he seems to be a nice and overall normal dude so I wish him the best even if I no longer find him entertaining. 🙏
My problem with Penguin0 is that he's an outrage junkie.
Anytime there's even a morsel of drama, he's got a video out for it within 30 minutes.
And there is a possibility that one of his videos ended up getting the pedophile lead singer of the lost prophets killed in prison, or at least contributed to the awareness of the situation for the prisoner that killed him.
And he seems rather chuffed at that.
I cannot remember a single video he made that has actually been good and worth watching that wasn't him clowning on somebody for being a piece of shit.
I'm not implying anyone should lose any sleep on that specific outcome, it was just the one thing that stuck in my mind when I was thinking about how he is searching for drama to harp on.
I'm just surprised he hasn't gone full chud, which is kinda impressive given his niche. He must be good at not getting radicalized by some single issue crusade like so many similar influencers.
On the positive side of things, if you are someone whose mind is still in its formative stages, having someone like him talk about how horrible evil people are and how you should not be like that person is probably a good thing.
Ah shit, I didn't know about any of it, I haven't even been subscribed ever since he started posting videos showing his face. Slightly disappointing, NGL. Believe it or not, he used to host a silly, short-form, gaming commentary channel, kinda like Dunkey (another one I used to watch almost religiously but he's now a husband and a father so he gets a pass, lol) but slightly less autistic. I still remember the Happy Wheels, Mr. President and Safety Driving series... and a quick YT check showed me those videos are at least 11 years old. 🥲

Back in the day I would watch the Hodge twins, they had a channel on gym culture and another where they would joke around about obscure current events.

Totally watched Elliot Hulse back in the day as well, I never quite understood how working out and self improvement became an entry point for MAGA and right wing authoritarian, but it did.
There was one I used to enjoy whose whole schtick was doing skits mocking onspiracy types. Then came Trump, and now if I go try to watch his stuff he's either the dumbest kind of MAGA or he's wearing the mask well enough it's hard to tell if he means it or he's satirizing it or if he just wants money and MAGA is a more valuable audience to advertise at.
It's like the shitty feeling I got when an old friend introduced a YouTube miniseries to me. I liked it. But the guy didn't send in new episodes for 4 months.
After entire 7 months without videos, I got a notification about him. Great!
...he gave a character who never appeared before the "plot twist villain" and expected us to be surprised.
Me when looking up a really promising game devlog a few years later when going over my ancient youtube subscriptions only to find out that they are a pos and a groomer. "Arcadian Rift" was the game's to-be name iirc.

Lots of stuff. Still commenting on drama a lot like Pokemon Card Scalpers. He still does the Official Podcast but dropped all other podcasts on that channel.
He's been going out of his way to shit on Trump a lot and even called out Netanyahu and Israel for being both genocidal monsters and interfering with US politics, on multiple occasions. Currently he has 4-5 videos going over the Trump phone scam and calling out the Trump family for it. He and Coffeezilla were the ones who reported the big Trump Phone data breach. The hacker who discovered it went to them after Trump's scam company ignored him.
So, so far he's in a pretty good spot.

The STEAM, arts & crafts bit of YouTube has kinda remained the same in most cases or even gotten better. Think of any creator that would go to Open Sauce and they're likely still as good as you remember.

I watch a lot of arts and crafts YouTubers and my kids love anyone doing wacky engineering projects. I’ve been disappointed by Mark Rober’s trajectory though. He was always a bit of a bro, but it’s ramped up big time and he seems to be more focused on flair and less on the engineering.

I grew up on builder youtube and I've had to leave channels like Veritasium and Mark Rober in the past due to the clear corporate influence that ruined the content for me. What was really the line for me was when a bunch of big channels started pushing pro-military slop disguised as engineering content. No Mark Rober i don't neef to hear you glaze the military. A few smaller channels have also done military content but i mostly excuse it because its usually years in the past and I'd bet most of them vehemently disagree with the actions of the US military. Like do I love that William Osman did an egg drop off a Navy ship? no. Do i think Big Willy would glaze the military? absolutely not. is he still part of my dream blunt rotation? yes.

Mandy and Sseth are basically the same (the former more than the latter, Sseth is markedly more stable now) and have also stayed relevant for a decade or so in the adult gaming "subculture". And thank God for that. Charlie (penguinz) fell off like half a decade (EDIT: actually, over a decade ago, I'm just in my 30s so time is starting to mesh) ago at least, but he seems to be a nice and overall normal dude so I wish him the best even if I no longer find him entertaining. 🙏

My problem with Penguin0 is that he's an outrage junkie.
Anytime there's even a morsel of drama, he's got a video out for it within 30 minutes.
And there is a possibility that one of his videos ended up getting the pedophile lead singer of the lost prophets killed in prison, or at least contributed to the awareness of the situation for the prisoner that killed him.
And he seems rather chuffed at that.
I cannot remember a single video he made that has actually been good and worth watching that wasn't him clowning on somebody for being a piece of shit.

Ah shit, I didn't know about any of it, I haven't even been subscribed ever since he started posting videos showing his face. Slightly disappointing, NGL. Believe it or not, he used to host a silly, short-form, gaming commentary channel, kinda like Dunkey (another one I used to watch almost religiously but he's now a husband and a father so he gets a pass, lol) but slightly less autistic. I still remember the Happy Wheels, Mr. President and Safety Driving series... and a quick YT check showed me those videos are at least 11 years old. 🥲

There was one I used to enjoy whose whole schtick was doing skits mocking onspiracy types. Then came Trump, and now if I go try to watch his stuff he's either the dumbest kind of MAGA or he's wearing the mask well enough it's hard to tell if he means it or he's satirizing it or if he just wants money and MAGA is a more valuable audience to advertise at.

It's like the shitty feeling I got when an old friend introduced a YouTube miniseries to me. I liked it. But the guy didn't send in new episodes for 4 months.
After entire 7 months without videos, I got a notification about him. Great!
...he gave a character who never appeared before the "plot twist villain" and expected us to be surprised.
