Just keep adding 1s until we run out of them.

No, it's an IP address

Can military organisation just take addresses?

waldfee@feddit.org · 26 pts · 65d

Even some companies have huge address ranges: https://www.xkcd.com/195/

anomnom@sh.itjust.works · 23 pts · 65d

DARPA kinda paid for the first TCP/IP implementation.

Tja@programming.dev · 4 pts · 64d

IP addresses are like oil for the internet, therefore a legitimate military target.

Rinn@awful.systems · 36 pts · 65d (1 reply)

Nah, humans are great at pattern-matching, even just being aware that some find 67 funny is enough for you to start spotting it. I started finding some amusement in it just due to exposure from younger coworkers.

snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 64d

Yeah, it's still a trash tier thing but it's at least slightly amusing

Late 40s, novice linux user, and I find it funny. I only know it coz of my kids, and the funny part is when they say it. You start spotting it everywhere yourself too, and in my head I shake my hands and shout 6 7....lol.

Thanks to the XFCE development proceeding at couch potato speeds, I've been on this funny number version for a year and a half lol.

boraginoru@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 64d

If you've been on that version for a year and a half, probably nothing major is broken. And with software these days, that's invaluable πŸ˜‚

nekusoul@lemmy.nekusoul.de · 13 pts · 65d (1 reply)

Your distro most likely just skipped that version. I distinctly remember getting excited about installing that specific version (on Arch). That said, I think that version was very shortlived due to a printer-bug or something like that.

1984@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 65d

I was on arch but yeah, may have missed it because it was so short lived.

6.6.5.1

kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 65d

Guys... we're gonna need a major release this sprint. 7.0 is coming Monday.

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 64d

Every generation has its words and phrases they use. Mostly to just annoy their parents-- Who had their own words and phrases.

So if you're Hep to the Scene and a Real Gone Cat, Be cool and chill, light up a J because it's 420 somewhere. And enjoy 67. And the not to distant future, we are all going to laugh at Gen Alpha about it. And they are going to be confused about the Gen Beta's annoying slang.

Personally I hope Plasma goes with 6.7 AND 6.9. The memes will just write themselves. And it will be glorious!

argarath@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 63d (10 replies)

Why did you upload it as a webp? Nothing against ya, but webp can burn in hell in for it's sins (inconveniencing me when I forward memes to telegram and they come out as stickers) lol

Legit tho, how did you make it a webp? I never tried it, is it an export option on gimp?

Aatube@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 63d (1 reply)

sounds like we should get off telegram! (or at least the official client?)

WebP is a pretty awesome format with awesome compression, both lossless and lossy. It's only behind JXL which is not widely adopted.

argarath@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 63d

Trust me, I want to get out of telegram, but the issue is that all of my friends do not want to leave. Stickers are a huge reason for them staying on telegram, but the real reason is that they're used to it so they don't want to try new stuff

dev_null@lemmy.ml · 9 pts · 63d (1 reply)

Yes, it's an export option in Gimp, and I also use it everywhere. It's smaller than both PNG and JPG, does the job of both (lossy and lossless), and has better quality at the same size.

argarath@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 63d

Nice!! I have been needing to upload some documents to websites with ridiculously small size limitations, so that's really useful! Thanks!

mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 63d (1 reply)

I am also quite annoyed by telegram, but it's their fault for assuming all webp images as stickers

argarath@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 63d

It's such a stupid decision! They can't even benefit from the better compression on all of the other images shared around because of this dumb decision

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 63d

Webp is way more efficient

BOplaid@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 63d (2 replies)

Its the funny number of gen alpha. Like 42 for millenials. But there is no meaning behind it. Its just six seven. That's it.

fenrasulfr@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 65d (13 replies)

Wait since when was 42 a meme for millenials? I must have missed a lot of internet culture.

Blackmist@feddit.uk · 22 pts · 65d (7 replies)

That's from hitchhiker's guide, probably more a gen X thing.

Millennials had 420.

lambipapp@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 65d

As a millennial, 1337, 42 and 420 is deeply embedded in my brain as funny numbers

fenrasulfr@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 65d (3 replies)

I am sure that ddpends on whether you were born in the 80's or 90's as a millenial. But thanks for the info.

Yeah 420 and 69 would be more of the meme numbers to me at least.

i_love_FFT@jlai.lu · 6 pts · 65d

I had to pick a custom port number for a service at work, I usedport 42069. My boss never realized and it's still there.

Danquebec@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 65d (1 reply)

I was born in the 90s and 42 was a meme number for me. But I was aware it was part of nerd culture. Definitely not something known by most.

fenrasulfr@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 65d

Considering how insular internet culture was back in the 2000's, let alone the 90's when very few had access to the internet. It does not surprise me I missed this meme.

tomato666@feddit.nl · 6 pts · 65d

HHGTTG was released at the end of the 70s so definitely a GenX thing.

Bluewing@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 64d

420 goes farther back than millennials. It was just more counter/sub culture and those who knew, knew. It just became common lexicon with the millennials.

groet@feddit.org · 3 pts · 65d (3 replies)

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Movie or TV series. 42 is the answer to "the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything"

fenrasulfr@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 65d (2 replies)

Thank you for the info. I have never watched Hitchhikers guide so that would be why I do not have a reference for it.

Danquebec@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 65d (1 reply)

I hadn't read or watched it yet I knew the reference. It was bigger than the source material. It helped popularize it.

fenrasulfr@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 65d

Maybe I was just on the wrong side of the internet at the time the meme was popular.

Tja@programming.dev · 3 pts · 64d

It's older than millenials, but widely known. And not really a "meme" like 420, 69 or 67. It was a chill meme.

Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 64d

It looks like funny number, but it's actually The Game. Funny numbers reference something, The Games are self referential.
