The algae multiplied. Who could have predicted they would do that? It was an entirely novel strategy.

I don't know what you mean, he stopped testing and the numbers went down.

This damn single celled organism is just far too intelligent for the trump administration.

BradleyUffner@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 46d

How could algae have learned to multiply? We're eliminating the department of education to prevent problems like this from reoccurring in the future.

The other bodies of water in this picture are what interest me. Both the Pond and the Tidal Basin look bluer, showing what it would have looked like. Now it's the color of grift.

rustydrd@sh.itjust.works · 34 pts · 46d (3 replies)

They're probably also deeper, which both provides a less ideal environment for algae to grow and also looks bluer despite algae that might be growing. The water in the tidal basin is also moving and has water naturally flowing in and out. The reflecting pool does not have that and needs to be shallow so that water movement is minimized to create the reflection it's supposed to give.

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 46d (2 replies)

Yes the Basin is more "wild," fair enough.

The Pond is also shallow and manmade, with a similar water system, so it's a truer comparison.

Rooskie91@discuss.online · 3 pts · 45d

I'm not sure if it changed, but the reflecting pool was modified to be fed by the tidal basin during Obama's presidency.

i guess that’s 1 way to get him to do whatever it takes to change it

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 5 pts · 45d

except it causes a feedback, eutrophication effect. teh algae dieback, and the consumption of oxygen by bacteria when the alge decomposies causes deadzone in the water. this is not that bad, since its manmade and not connected to another natural water system.

So painting a pool a dark color which will increase the water temperature encouraged algae to grow? You'd have to be some kinda scientist or psychic to know that would happen.

stringere@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 46d (4 replies)

They added bleach and peroxide. On their own, each can combat algae even though there are better ways. Together, they make eachother less effective.

but they were using gallon jugs, and dint look like they dumped a large amount either.

Yet another symbol of the state of the U.S. The MAGA folks are pretty good at that. Take this ridiculous military parade, the absurd cage fight in front of the White House, that goddamn ballroom—and the list goes on and on....

It’s truly unbelievable that, with all this stupid nonsense, they don’t realize how ridiculous and dim-witted they are. But hey, what else can you expect from this clown show....

In a way, it’s almost a good thing for the world, because it really makes it crystal clear just how uncivilized these wretched fascists are.

Can someone confirm if the pool was being fine before the "renovation"?

VelvetPinkOtter123@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 45d (1 reply)

It was not fine

The pool has had a history of bad filtration and would cost a lot to fix it, which is why it was never really fixed

On one hand it looks like shit but on the other hand who cares? Big picture, this isn't a major issue worth sinking a bunch of money into

But Obama did try to invest some money into fixing it but that was also a failure in that nothing really changed. Obama spent "a lot" of money and got basically no results

So Trump, trying to be better than Obama, has taken it upon himself to fix it. Except, Trump can't seem to do literally anything right and so now it's actually worse than it was

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 45d

So Trump, trying to be better than Obama, has taken it upon himself to fix it.

That's just the rationalization. The real reason he "fixed" it, was because it was a classic real estate developer kickback scheme. That's his bread and butter - get a big contract, do as little as possible for as cheap as possible, and split the profit with whomever gave you the contract.

He's now graduated to being by the guy who hands out the contracts, and gets the kickbacks. That's why he's doing all the renovation and construction projects. The Ballroom, the Arc De Trump, the Reflecting Pool, etc., all kickback schemes.

The Kennedy Center was going to be his entertainment propaganda center, but when EVERYBODY cancelled, he announced a 2 year renovation - another kickback scheme - but the court stopped it.

Oh, and these projects tend to go over budget, which is all profit.

THAT'S why he did it, not to fix Obama's supposed failure. We don't even know if it's true, since the only information comes from the government. It might have been working just fine, but Trump is always going to say that he rescued the world from certain disaster...in two weeks.

importantly, it’s a very simple and visual representation of the spectacular incompetence

(i was going to add undeniable but i’ve seen that the cult is trying to say that “the radical left” sabotaged it by introducing the algae)

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 15 pts · 46d (5 replies)

First, it doesn't belong to the White House or Trump. It's there for literal and metaphorical reflection on what it means to be America, with specific reference to Lincoln and Martin Luther King. Second, I'm sure a bunch of the public money from this project landed in Trump's pocket. Third, it's just another failure, in the one area he's supposed to have had experience in before running for President.

Unlike his moral failures that appall us every day, we can laugh at this one.
