PSA: The Tesseract frontend includes a hardcoded hidden instance blacklist with all leftist and trans-friendly instances.

https://github.com/asimons04/tesseract/blob/main/src/lib/blacklists.ts#L2270

I discovered this after upgrading our instance yesterday, which also upgraded all frontends to their latest versions as well. After I did, our Tesseract frontend stopped working and I noticed immediately as it's been my primary for a while. Initially I thought it was an API version mismatch, but no, it was much worse.

Someone pointed out that the developer of the frontend added an explicit hidden and unmodifiably blacklist which includes any and all instances to the left of Kissinger. There's a commit which also explains their specious reasoning about our instance specifically, as it seems we've been on their shit list for a bit longer than that.

This instance and its admin staff encourages identity politics, groupthink, mob mentality, and extremist solutions to societal problems. Users who advocate violence are not moderated so long as the admins agree with the target. Caution and critical thinking are advised when interacting with this instance or its users.

When you use tesseract to connect to one blacklisted such instance , you just get a message informing you that Tesseract is "incompatible with that instance" which leads one to think of a technical issue, like an API mismatch, rather than the dev being an opinionated coward.

Isn't it funny how all the software developed by turbolibs, like Piefed and Tesseract, end up with hidden control mechanisms from developers who think they know better than everyone else? That they don't just think they deserve to tell you what you should think, but they should manipulate you to think it? Isn't it funny how libs go on about how bad it is to support lemmy due to the ideology of the devs behind it, and yet lemmy has 0 opinions as a software? It does make one think...

Anyway, I forked - it as one does - and disabled the blacklist, but since this is a massively ideologically compromised software, I'll doubt I'll keep this frontend up after Lemmy 1.0. I think we'll bring up mlmym again now that someone's maintaining it again.

I agree. People who do this are emotionally compromised and in my opinion can't be trusted when writing code. There was a different developer who through similar political convictions made his software wipe PCs that were in Russia or Belarus. Maybe that seems more extreme but it comes from the same politically charged and emotionally compromised place.

Unfortunately that piece of shit didn't even get fired or cast out of the open source community, let alone get sent to prison for that. And yes as an American he could get sent to prison for that because he also effected American military systems in the region.

Blahaj.zone is certainly not "extremist". It's a pretty innocent instance. Must be some major queerphobia going on here.

cavitationfetishist2@quokk.au · 43 pts · 12d

Carl@anarchist.nexus · 13 pts · 11d

My best guess is that one of the dev’s alts got put in the corner for transphobia, and they were butthurt about it.

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 12 pts · 11d

Hey you speak for your damn self. We're making ALL the frogs gay!

It's literally the pot calling the kettle black. Because we (trans people) believe in introspection, gender studies, biology, scientific methods, harm reduction, and can connect all these things, it conflicts with what people who don't think. It comes down to immovable ignorance and misattributing through that ignorance, and they see us though a freaky fetishist rhetoric cynic lens. We end up being extreme difference alien extremist idealogists, and therefore different and must be a threat to their current worldview. And honestly, yeah. If you're so stuck in trad bullshit that you stand in the way of progress and then claim "science" but then exact hate and oppression of humanity while aligning with the Nazis, then yeah, we are your enemy in every aspect of the word. We just wanna live our lives and love and be loved by our families and build communities and be happy. But in order to do that, APPARENTLY, some shit's gotta change. Stop beating your wives, stop abusing your kids, read more, actually listen to people when they tell you something hurts, be more human, have empathy for people. We got told the future is hopeful and bright for everybody. We realized it isn't that way. We figured out some ways it could be better. We aren't perfect and are all human, just like everybody else. We literally all want the same thing, unless you're a freaky hater rapist murderer racist piece of shit human. WHY are there SO MANY of those??? How do we help people? First step is accepting and understanding ourselves, and to do that, sometimes we need to listen to others who are also trying to understand THEMselves. We (everybody) aren't that smart, and because of that, we have to continually try to be better, to ourselves and to others. And that takes effort and energy and time and patience. It takes examination of our biases, drilling down on "why" and researching history. And once you start doing that, shit gets a lot clearer. Not crystal clear, but definitely clearer. I still don't understand why people get stuck on hate, but I know it makes me really, really sad when I lose a friend to it. It makes me sad when I talk to somebody I haven't in a long time, and they hit me with angry, super stupid political rhetoric that illustrates how far down the fascist hole they've fallen. It's always from a point of self confidence, pain, and a sense of overcoming intellectual adversity. But it's always ignorance and needing belonging, resulting in hurting others.

I'm rambling because I'm tired of it. I'm also just tired in general. A lifetime of it all really wears you out and makes it hard to recover. Less friends, less family, less government, less rights, people talking you down everywhere, the constant considering and strategy. I'm tired. So tired. I do think we're all gonna make it, but like db0 said, "we aren't pacifists", we just... I dunno, trans people are the tanks I guess. Politicians are the dps, everyday people speaking out in support are the support. I don't want to be a tank, I want to be a normal person. I want to be a game dev and have friends and go visit my family. But I can't do that anymore, so I must fight for the chance at maybe my younger siblings to have a chance at that future.

And if that makes me an extremist... I don't think so. But if somebody does, then yeah, fine, I guess we can have beef.

Somebody else in here commented that they couldn't stand the jokes and memes and stuff. And honestly, fuck that person. It all hurts. Of course it does. But we have to keep going and not give in to the hate. Otherwise... We lose everything. Identity politics, culture war... More like rights to life and love and freedom and equality. Losing civil rights weekly in 2026 is crazy. Defunding scientific progress and research. Everything is politicized against us now. We can't even get a passport anymore. I can get executed for using the restroom in public. I get side eyed by every dad and verbally assaulted by the drunk ones. My offense? Walking in public on a sidewalk, in the evening, back from the grocery store.

I hope all fascists die in a fire. And now you have a better idea why.

I'm tired. I'm going to bed in hopes that things will be better tomorrow.

Because the criticisms aren't relevant to the objections being discussed? The blocks are happening inside the code without the user being aware. Maybe if it was a setting (even enabled by default) to use a "recommended blocklist" then it would make sense to dig in to why something or someone was blocked.

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 44 pts · 12d (1 reply)

I 'member. Capitalism ruins everything...

We do run iocaine but that only takes care of known spam subnets and scraping agents. You need to know who to target to send in iocaine first. In front of that we have haphash which is a PoW. We don't use it site-wide though, as we're ok people scraping well-cached things like our frontpage. We use it on dynamic content like comments which scrapers love to scrape by the millions, each of them causing a DB query which we cannot cache.

It seems that new lemmy added some new url paths which I didn't know about (I think /comment/ is new, before it was all just /post/) which the botnmets discovered after a few hours and started scraping. On top of that I noticed that some scrapers were using random wildcard domain to go to the main site, so I punted those to iocaine as well.

But seriously, this recent shift of project leads deciding what users should and shouldn't see is concerning. And honestly, I could give them the benefit of the doubt if they added it as some sort of opt-in list. But no.

They will force their narrative down the users' throats.

I might not always agree with db0, the Anarchist Flotilla, or the "Tankie Triad". But whatever shakes Lemmy right now, consider me an ally. Whatever these egocentric folks attempt to create, it is everything Lemmy was created to replace.

Hey, don't make me give up my airmail.cc address! I don't know of anywhere else that lets you make a persistent address so easily at a domain that's still accepted by stuff.

Seriously if you know of anywhere else I'm all ears. The small chuckle I got out of the airmail.cc email domain ain't worth the association.

diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 10d

I also have an airmail.cc box and it's basically IP and/or domain blocked on lots of places. I think some mail was even quietly dropped. Sounds like it's too easy to sign up and since that's not the "industry standard" (thanks alphabet and microsoft) it's often blocked even by self-hostables.

Try riseup.net and autistici.org. Or maybe on of these dozens of servers (although little of them with a good privacy notice, unfortunately needed under capitalism). Or maybe sign up for a pubnix and use that thing's email, although the only one I found with a proper privacy policy was envs.net and I was banned for trying to prove a point.

Alternative: open up Tor Browser, get your super banned super forbidden email address (like maildrop.cc), then open a new tab, smash that F12 key, press the little phone/tablet icon on the right, then change the first selector to "iPhone SE", change "UA: " to Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 16_7_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/16.5 Mobile/15E148 DuckDuckGo/7 Safari/604, then go to duck.com/email (the .onion is broken due to bad csp lol), put your very illegal box there and get a very legal one back. You may ask, why Tor Browser. I say, to make DuckDuckGo shut up more easily about your brand new alias. You can just keep doing this, infinite legit email glitch. Just nobody tell anyone, sshhhhhhhhhh.

Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 11d (1 reply)

I just looked up if that was the same Jordan, and the only rat related Lund is a Zoe Lund, https://www.zoelund.com/lund/rats/rats.html

Anyway I keep seeing their names pop up and I have no real context for what they are about, and looking at Google results it's just some whitewashed stuff about J Lund doing Shakespeare.

It is kind of amusing to me how often these people who run their own instances force other people to accept their own ideology.

Admiral Patrick has ruined all credibility and has proven that he doesn't add value to the fediverse. He actively detracts from it by shaping instances other than his own into his own image. Without their consent.

I'm not saying this because I'm on that user list (fucking lol) but because it's just pathetic. Rimu is doing the same thing on Piefed, Kaplan tried to do something similar by pressuring other instances to blacklist Dbzer0... Meanwhile the Flotilla seems to be the only ones willing to be completely transparent about what is going on and actually have their users decide.

And for Admiral Patrick, considering the dipshit seems to love Star Trek so much, let me remind you of what someone far better than you once said who you seem to admire.

With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.

I'm adding on my own quote.

You don't need an LLM to alphabetise lines. In Emacs you can just select a number of lines and run M-x sort-lines and it'll do it for you.

Politics aside, surely they must know that removing such a blocklist would be trivial for anyone technically competent enough to run a Lemmy instance?

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 25 pts · 12d

Tesseract can be hosted open-ended. I.e. you can use it to connect to any instance. Which I guess the dev is doing. So you could use such an open-ended tesseract to connect to any instance which is not offering it directly. So in that case, it's a way for the dev to prevent such vanilla hosting from seeing leftist instances.

I wouldn't suggest anyone do that of course, especially with an untrustworthy dev like that as you'd have to trust the .js you're loading and passing your credentials or activities through are not getting intercepted for political reasons.

AlteE@programming.dev · 16 pts · 12d (2 replies)

There is nothing wrong about adding default filters to the software(whenever they are acceptable by others or not). The problem is that this should be done via a separate data file from which code extracts strings and not be hardcoded, as it is against the programming etiquette. Also, this file with filter data shouldn't be hidden or obscured, so that others can modify it as they want.

taco@anarchist.nexus · 17 pts · 12d (1 reply)

Etiquette aside, this is just functionally bad. It took db0 months to notice because the frontend didn't get updated until an instance upgrade. Seems like that would be pretty common and vary widely between instances, making updating the list a slow, unreliable process. Even if they wanted to censor sites themselves, it would've made more sense to have the list itself remotely hosted so it could be updated without waiting for full instance upgrades some months later.

I thought Admiral Patrick """left""" lemmy more than a year ago?

I think a bit of a problem with the fediverse might be that the majority of instance admins are just barely competent enough with development that if they get upset with how other admins run their shit, they end up forking some piece of the project in order to put their thumb on the scale and bend the network to better fit their worldview.

This bullshit is starting to feel like a bit of a pattern.

Javi@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 10d

Fair enough. I noticed that one from the fork you made. I just assumed that's where Patrick forked it from originally.

mr_satan@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 10d (9 replies)

More likely they privated their repo. Your fork is way ahead with this devs commits. I'd guess the dev made a fork of the paulo-roger repo when they stopped the development.

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 10d (8 replies)

Mine is ahead because that repo was at my level when I forked

mr_satan@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 10d (7 replies)

Well yeah. The guy made a bunch of commits, you forked, they privated the repo. The repo you forked "no longer exists" so parent fork is reported. Nobody renamed their account, nobody transferred the repo.

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 10d (6 replies)

I'm pretty sure his wasn't a fork. He hard forked from photon, so there's nobody he forked from calling it tesseract. This doesn't make sense

floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 9d (5 replies)

So the last commit on the apparent "original" paulo-roger/tesseract repo states abandonment of the project in 2023. However this commit, like every other in this repo, is authored by asimons04.

$ git log | grep asimons | wc -l
651
$ git log | grep roger | wc -l
0

That seems pretty weird to me. I guess if they were added as a contributor at some point they could've force-pushed a rewritten history? Still doesn't make a lot of sense.

Edit: Maybe it's just paulo-roger who checked out asimons04's repo after they abandoned it and uploaded it to his profile as a fresh repo instead of forking, and somehow GitHub mistook it for the parent repo after as04 made their repo private/whatever happened?

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 9d

Ye that's my suspicion as well. I think I got redirected to a random fork

mr_satan@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 9d

My theory was something like:

  • Repo A (paulo-roger) abandoned at 2023
  • Repo B (asimons04) forked and worked from there
  • Repo C (OP)

Now what happens if repo B is removed (privated)? We still have all the commit history form repo B, but no upstream to link to that history. We also have all the commit history form repo A, however the upstream is still public so it gets linked properly.

The fork chain is still the same A -> b -> C we just no longer see repo B on github. It doesn't mean that anything got moved, deleted or overwritten, just hidden.

orsetto@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 10d (2 replies)

I'm not on it, unfortunately.

Javi@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 10d (1 reply)

Yeah looks like its back up. I'm guessing they made it private and had a change of heart. When I checked earlier, it would 404, and db0's fork now references the earlier fork in the chain rather than this one.

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 10d

There wasn't an earlier fork. Either ap isn't telling the whole story of what they did with their repo (they also lost all their stars), or github is bugged somehow

Cowbee@lemmy.ml · 19 pts · 12d

Not wrong, but the target of violence being fascists is not a bad thing. The Dev is hiding that fact and pretending all violence is inherently equal. It's the same logic Zionists use to demonize Palestinian resistance groups.

AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 11d (1 reply)

Like, the bar for calling for violence on lemmy is horrifically low.

Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 11d

It's not that low. Just don't be a disgusting billionaire fascist apologist, or wear state surveillance cameras on your face, and we'll get along just fine. Next you'll be complaining about flock cameras being vandalised? Allowing secret surveillance of citizens is a hallmark of authoritarianism that all of us as human beings have a duty to resist.

brucethemoose@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 12d (8 replies)

Hitler is dead. Of course Reddit sucks.

But I don't think we should explicitly advocate for the death of living people.

EDIT: My point; exactly.

I want criminals put on trial, I want them mobbed and disgraced and utterly humiliated.

I don’t want them killed.

And thats controversial on Lemmy? Literally everyone in this thread disagrees?

This is exactly what I’m talking about. If no one here sees that as extremist, I don’t know what to tell you.

FlyingCircus@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 12d

When the state protects genociders, there is nothing wrong with using violence against them. I would love for every member of the state of Israel to stand trial and be punished legally and appropriately, but there is no state right now that has the power or inclination to do that, so in the meantime I will not condemn Palestinians for using violence to protect themselves and to make it so that Israelis cannot continue to perpetrate genocide.

I would love it if health insurance CEOs were made to stand trial for denying coverage to dying people, but there is no court in America that will hear that case, so in the meantime I will not condemn the Luigis of this world for taking justice into their own hands.

Give me a state that actually delivers justice for everyday people instead of the rich, and I will advocate for non-violence.

brucethemoose@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 12d (3 replies)

Where is there any political group or faction today that doesn’t advocate for and celebrate violence?

Yeah... That is not how the vast majority of the population thinks. Even if it seems that way online.

I can't believe I'm debating "well every political faction advocates for murder, explicitly, so why shouldn't we?" I don't even know where to begin, there.

AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 12d (2 replies)

Do you not think a vote for Trump is not just advocating for violence, but a real action supporting violence? What about the liberals who support Israel's genocide? Is that not advocating for violence? Those who deny climate change? Antivaxxers who refuse to mask up or obstruct medical policy? Those who who celebrate the Ukrainian strikes into Russia and deny diplomatic solutions?

If it helps, I do agree with you, that alone is no justification. The only justification for murder is to save an innocent life. For example if violence was the only practically viable solution to topple a murderous regime, and would actually be able to succeed. If there are other non violent ways, you have to take those. But they made sure there are none.

How do you feel about quokk.au not getting the black mark? Kinda insulting ngl.

The dev of Tessaract is obviously a fascist, but oce isn't calling them a tankie, they're agreeing with the fascist that leftist instances should be censored, because "tankies"

Hamartia@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 12d (1 reply)

Which is ironic given that people here are upset about that mod forcing their political biases onto others.

Basically

  • First they came for the communists ---totally cool

  • Then they came for my outgroup --- wtf!!

Don't forget that MAGA instance on there

First they came for the MAGA, then they came for the commies /s

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 12d (5 replies)

Doesn't the software package for running a lemmy instance have a default defederation blacklist that includes some of these same instances? It sounds like they're talking about exactly that - an editable blacklist instead of hiding it as some kind of software error when you go somewhere the admin doesn't want you to. To which I say, Lemmy already has that, it's called defederation or muting an instance yourself.

Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 11 pts · 12d (2 replies)

There's a difference between not federating with fascists, spam, csam instances by default and not federating with leftist instances because you think it's scary to "normal" users.

Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 12d

The other thing is that the developer of Tesseract doesn't have the authority to block servers they don't like on other people's instances. It is a major overstep from him to do this, and a severe breach of trust. You really have to hold yourself or be held to a high standard when writing code that runs on other people's computers.

Putting in a backdoor so you can get in is really bad. Putting in your own hardcoded ideological filters isn't as bad, but it's almost as bad.

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 12d

I agree, I'm just saying that it sounds like what they're talking about is something that's already natively built into Lemmy and doesn't need to be built into a front-end. Especially since I believe some of these are already defederated by default and you would need an account on an instance that has gone out of their way to federate with those in order to see/interact with them in the first place.

ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 12d (1 reply)

There's a technical, often legal, aspect to blacklists. Unmanaged and unmoderated instances can be hijacked and be an actual threat with bots and so on.

But there's another aspect, like someone's favorite shitposter got banned for gatekeeping neopronouns, and now the entire Blahaj instance is blacklisted.

The categories are just entirely different orders of magnitude.

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 12d

My point was that what they're calling for here already exists natively within the federation framework and this hidden filter that the dev made doesn't even need to exist as a front-end system that mods/admins can use as a result. And that some of the more egregious instances on this list are already on the defederation list by default and that admins are free to add or remove instances from that list as they please.

In short, that this hidden filter is not only unnecessary but that it also only exists to secretly censor what users on an instance can see on top of what instances are already defederated by the admins and would have no purpose as a publicly available system.

oce@jlai.lu · 3 pts · 12d

I don't know if this dev is fascist I have not studied the question. Do you have some other information besides this list? Indeed, I'm not calling the dev a tankie, but rather some of the instances of the blacklist that I know of, as a possible explanation for being blacklisted. I don't know all of them well enough to tell.

gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -1 pts · 12d (1 reply)

No, they're critiquing tankies specifically. Tankies do not represent all leftists

I confirm.

The dev of Tessaract is obviously a fascist,

Can you say why you think this? Is it this code?

    {
        domain: "lemmy.dbzer0.com",
reason: `This instance and its admin staff encourages identity politics, groupthink, mob mentality, and extremist solutions
to societal problems. Users who advocate violence are not moderated so long as the admins agree with the target.
Caution and critical thinking are advised when interacting with this instance or its users.`

Well, now I think this because you're defending them.

Not the criteria being used here, obviously.

Also, we have a statement of intent. There is a statement of intent here in a pr. You cannot assume good faith of shit libs. You cannot assume good faith of people who say they're doing things for bad reasons.

I mean you can but its disingenuous and shitty and I'm blocking your instance because its so violently stupid.

What's a tankie?

oce@jlai.lu · 0 pts · 11d (6 replies)

The Wikipedia introduction is quite accurate for the kind of people you may find on those instances, especially the bottom of the introduction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie

Arcanepotato@crazypeople.online · 0 pts · 10d (5 replies)

I'm not asking about the instances, I'm asking about the word. The wiki doesn't really help:

Tankie is a pejorative label generally applied to authoritarian communists, especially those who support or defend acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof.

Okay, so an insulting way to refer to an authoritarian communist. What makes them authoritarian? I see this word being used by people who support the police. Are the police (as an institution) not authoritarian? So what does authoritarian mean?

More specifically, the term has been applied to those who express support for one-party Marxist–Leninist socialist republics, whether contemporary or historical. It has a history of being used by some anti-authoritarian leftists, anarchists, democratic socialists, and reformists to denounce Stalinism, although the term has seen increasing use by liberal and right‐wing factions as well.[5][4]

Okay, so only Marxist–Leninist or Stalinists?

The term "tankie" was originally used by dissident Marxist–Leninists to describe members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) who followed the party line of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). Specifically, it was used to distinguish party members who spoke out in defence of the Soviet use of tanks to suppress the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the 1968 Prague Spring, or who more broadly adhered to pro-Soviet positions.[6][7]

Okay, so ML or Stalinists who are pro-soviet.

The term has been extended to describe people who endorse, defend, or deny the actions of communist leaders such as Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong. In recent times, the term has been used across the political spectrum and in a geopolitical context to accuse individuals of having a bias in favour of current anti-Western authoritarian states; Belarus, Cuba, China,[8][9] Iran,[10] Nicaragua, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela serve as prevalent examples.

Uh...those are all very different.

Maybe it's easier for me to ask what's an acceptable communist?

oce@jlai.lu · 1 pts · 10d (4 replies)

If this wiki page doesn't help you understand the term tankie I don't think I can do better. It's basically people who support authoritarian communism including denying or supporting their crimes like the Tiananmen Square massacre and similar. As the last part explains, sometimes the relationship to Marxism gets lost as they focus on anti-Western or anti-American positions, such as defending Islamist Iran and other Islamist movements that share very little with Marxism and the left.

I don't know if it's possible, but I would guess democracy based communism with no human rights abuse. Maybe that's better called social democracy or democratic socialism. For example, in Europe many former Soviet communism supporters lost their faith when they progressively learned about Stalinism crimes and founded what's called "Socialist" parties as opposed to "Communist" (ex: French or Spanish socialist parties). In English, they are usually called social democrats, close to people like Bernie Sanders, I think.

Arcanepotato@crazypeople.online · 1 pts · 10d (3 replies)

I don't think you understood my response. The wiki doesn't help because there is no common thread between the groups listed, and they aren't all comunist. Like, iran? The article goes on to talk about modern russia. That's not communist either. The only thing I can find in common is that they are not "western".

Socialism is such a broad term it's almost meaningless without qualifiers. Social democracy is also extremely different from democratic socialism. Social democracy wants to reform capitalism to reduce its harm whereas democratic socialists want a socialist society (i.e. no capitalism) but without the own party system and more democratic decision making.

Help me understand the term Tankie as anything other than an insult towards someone who thinks the capitalists and imperialists are bad, actually. Are their human rights abuses less horrific than any other?

oce@jlai.lu · 1 pts · 10d (2 replies)

I think it implies a sort of connection in this way: Marxism -> opposition to capitalism -> opposition to countries championing capitalism such as the USA -> defending organizations who oppose USA -> defending Islamist organizations or current Russia.

I have observed those thoughts combined within instances that claim to be Marxist on Lemmy. Have you not?

I believe all human rights abuse are bad whatever the ideology or absence of it. But maybe it's even more depressing when it comes from an ideology base that claims to be in favor of the oppressed people. It's also most visible from the leftist side here, because far right instances are more unanimously ostracized. I never saw them in my feed personally, probably due to admins early filtering.

Arcanepotato@crazypeople.online · 1 pts · 10d

I would say I have observed the following from individual users:

Marxism -> opposition to capitalism -> opposition to countries championing capitalism such as the USA -> defending organizations who oppose USA -> defending Islamist organizations or current Russia.

I think the Hexbear code of conduct explains why I feel the last price is missing. I'll quote them instead of trying to paraphrase:

"Critical Support" means that while we may not agree with every policy of a country that is being targeted by the US Empire, we support them in their struggle to remain independent.

Being anti USA doesn't mean you are on board with all the opinions of all the other opponents or that you are defending them. Personally, I sure am hoping we are watching the collapse of Team America World Police as a result of their involvement in the middle east but that's where my opinion ends. I don't know anything about the groups opposing them apart from what I read in western media which is as good as useless, so the idea that I would defend them is pretty absurd. Defend them about what? To whom? (I'm also not ML btw so maybe I shouldn't be using myself as an example?). USA = bad does not mean another state is good. But I have found people assume that when I wish for the end of the US that I would support another authoritarian and/or imperialist regime in its place which is not accurate.

(Footnote: I'm assuming you don't mean all Islamic groups/nations when you said "Islamic organizations" but only the ones who are in opposition to the USA. )

Anyways, this has gotten very off topic. Your connection list was helpful in answering my question. Whether or not I think there are instances that meet this isn't really relevant.

Apparently maga.place is super leftist /s

There are a few on there I would say have issues but weirdly the consensus here is that "no of course not these are all fine sites and now why isn't some other site on the list because it's leftist and belongs on the list as a badge of honor!" Kinda seems funny to me that no one noticed the maga site on the list. And you are the only person here to doubt that narrative. No one else considers that maybe this dev had a few bad experiences with some of these sites that maybe otherwise wouldn't be on the list..? I have no knowledge of most of them, but hexbear is about as head-fucked as an instance comes.
