As I said repeatedly, if a store asks for a phone number for a rewards number, use this with the local area code. You will be surprised how often it works.

Zarobi@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2d (2 replies)

I usually just say I don't want to give out my phone number. It usually works but it short circuits the cashier's brain

Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d

When I worked at a place with such a rewards program, the amount of people who put in their number/signed up for rewards was included in our performance metric. It’s so fucked up, because it impacted how many hours we were given. Never mind that if someone only works part time their numbers will naturally be lower than those who work full time, making it a self-perpetuating cycle for those who want to move up to full time.

Anyway, point is - if the cashier cares, it’s because a messed up system is compelling them to. Which is why instead of saying I don’t have an account (which will prompt them to ask me to sign up), I just use Jenny’s number.

vrek@programming.dev · 3 pts · 2d

True but giving a phone number often gives discounts... Giving a fake number like 867-5309 doesn't compromise your privacy at all.

db2@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 2d (5 replies)

But what is the question? We need a bigger computer!

ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -5 pts · 2d (4 replies)

It was "what is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything?"...it was right there in the other guys reply

LostCarcosan@lemmy.today · 18 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Specifically it was the answer to life, the universe, and everything, but you'll notice that "life, the universe, and everything" is not a question. So, we know the answer, but not the question. It is also further explained that the question and the answer cannot exist within the same universe

ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Yeah my bad, my pop culture is a bit rusty. The ultimate question, I.e. the question of life, the universe and everything, is "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?"

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 2d (14 replies)

It's just that 67 is lame. It's a reference to some video so whatever, but the creepy thing about it is people are expected to laugh uncontrollably when they hear the number. And they do it because they have to do whatever social media demands of them.

The whole 67 thing is cringey.

I am guessing you don't know what those numbers mean.

GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world · -16 pts · 2d (8 replies)

It's in reference to a book and a song or whatever.

If you need to be reminded then you definitely need to book that exam.

ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 2d (1 reply)

69 is a sex position.

4/20 is the marijuana holiday.

GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

So it's a crass cringe reference just like 67.

Seriously just book the exam..

So spectacularly, confidently wrong.

spitfire@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 2d

Just like an LLM ;)

GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d

(I'm being sarcastic)

My point is that it's just a reference too.

The only difference being that it came up after you lot entered adulthood, so it's a constant reminder you're not cool anymore.

Lumisal@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (2 replies)

You're probably too young to know what 69 means I guess based on your responses, let alone ever had the chance to do a 69, so fair enough.

And I guess weed is much more legal these days than before, so less need for a code number.

42 is what you were thinking of with your first answer btw, and it's the meaning of everything.

1337 you might come across if you start coding. 1ts M0r3 0utd4t3d.

GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1d (1 reply)

So it's a cringe crass reference.

Which makes it better than 67 how?

Lumisal@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

69?

Most say it's better because it has a meaning of some sort, even if crass. Kind of how "fuck" has survived hundreds of years because it's based on a meaning.

I know 67 is funny for it's absurdism in meaninglessness, but it's very likely it'll be a fad that dies for the same reason, as future generations won't give it as funny since it doesn't have meaning. Things like 69, while crass, might still be picked up by an even younger generation, and 420 will probably stick around since it's already been passed on multiple generations. 42? Maybe. It's essentially a scifi trope, so it might stick around too, especially with AI becoming prevalent.

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · -1 pts · 1d

Nobody goes batshit crazy over 69 or 420 tho. The reaction is just "heh."

67 would be fine if the reaction to it wasn't so cringey. You're reaction is no exception... you're pretending that "those old people are out of touch and just don't get it!"

Nah fam, we all completely get everything there is to know about 67. It's a dumb meme, there's nothing else there. 69 and 420 are also dumb memes, and we all know that too.

67 insists upon itself. It's a really lame thing to attach any significance to.

HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Because they have some meaning (and arguably, value) beyond "a number we choose to be a meme."

The minute enough people knew what 6 7 was, it lost the only value it had: being an inside joke and using it to exclude others not in the know.

StumblingWasabi@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 1d

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Humans don't work like that. Geographically, some trends finish in the area they started before they even reach other areas, though the internet has reduced the time lag. But there will be people who get into it before it's a trend, people that get into it because it's a trend, and people who continue to repeat it after it's a trend because they either like it or miss the time when it was a trend. It only dies off as those that hold on to it die off.

So 6-7 will be with us for a long time, though it's frequency of use could be on a downward trend.
