True metal fans don't gatekeep music.

victorz@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1d

Gotta say, IMO this has nothing to do with being a [insert genre] fan at all. It's just about not being a pompous, pretentious asshole. 😄 Let people like what they like! But I still have my opinions about what level of musicality and interesting aspects there need to be in the music I listen too. Again, the music ->I<- listen to. Other people can definitely listen to bland mainstream garbage if they want to. 😅 Not all mainstream music is garbage of course, some of it is popular because it's actually good, so not all awesome music is obscure/indie/whatever. 👍

Yeah, I mean Megadeth was founded because Dave Mustaine went too hard for Metallica. I imagine your mom has seen some shit. But congrats on Dave being your dad though?

90s demo tapes hit different though. The crustiness really enhances the overall atmosphere of certain genres.

Ysigim - Ain Soph Or (1994) is a personal favorite. They did a digital rerelease recently and it's too clean, I don't like it.

Valsa@mander.xyz · 10 pts · 1d

Just looked it up on YouTube and someone in the comments called it "magick metal". I've been out of the metal scene for a while now but I see the tradition of inventing goofy names for subgenres is still going strong lol

Here are a couple of my favs:

  • Cromlech - ...and darkness fell (Meloblack along the lines of Dawn/Sacramentum)
  • Cartilage/Altar - Ex Oblivione (All time DM split from two bands who never really did anything after)
  • Abhorrence - S/T (early Finn-death classic)
  • Dusk - Majestic Thou in Ruin (absolutely goated Death/Doom EP)

Absolutely! There are many remasters nowadays, which always feel too clean to me, too.

My personal recommendation: Tyrant - Rise of the Fallen (1998)

Aha, a fellow FÄTHØM fan.

ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 12h (1 reply)

FÄTHØM, the German Satanic Black Metal band, that had members all over the political spectrum, released 4 demos and 1 full album. They all killed each other once they all got too drunk and started to talk about politics instead of satanism, though police reports point to that Holocaust-denying Neonazi bassist, Hans Mann started the first blow, but last-man standing ancap guitarist Kristoffer Johannson also got fatally wounded by the end, and spent more time trying to write "fucking communist scum" with his own blood rather than to get medical attention.

Too bad that the now christian tradwife ex-wife of Mann tries everything in her power to stop these albums from further circulation, because "metal bad".

crashex@crazypeople.online · 3 pts · 11h

Interesting to mention also that their triangle player Egon Wurst was decapitated by a halberd during this fight while stabbing Mann with his triangle. They are so controversial that a German court ruled that their merch may not be worn in pre-schools and nursing homes!

Why is iGhost disliked by metal fans?

Leviathan@fedinsfw.app · 6 pts · 23h

You can like what you like, I just don't think Ghost is Metal.

kettuli@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

It’s hardly even metal if you look at it from atop some grindcore mountain.

decolo@piefed.social · 3 pts · 23h

Let's be real, its pop rock, but that doesn't make it less fun to listen to

Aqarius@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 16h

It's not even disliked, it's just a running gag that Ghost's subgenre is "Scooby Doo chase music"

rabber@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 6h

It's not disliked it's just not a metal band

Toasticus@piefed.social · -4 pts · 23h (4 replies)

Because Ghost is not going crazy with solos, screeching/belching/barking lyrics out, isn't recording their material in some hollowed out and echoed building somewhere. They also aren't catering to lyrics about how it'd be a wonderful day to be devouring some flesh and fucking the eye sockets of a skull. But you wouldn't know that with the vocalist doing said belching/barking/screeching lyrics until you read what the song is about.

So basically, Ghost is not liked because it's not catering to metal edgelords.

The downvotes prove me right. :)

PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social · 2 pts · 15h

If someone tried to call a jazz band classical, I'd be similarly annoyed with them. It's not metal because it doesn't have any of the hallmarks of the genre and doesn't sound like metal. And no, that doesn't mean they're doing something new and groundbreaking. It means they're calling themselves the wrong thing.

nightlily@leminal.space · 2 pts · 9h (1 reply)

That’s as bad a take as the genre elitists.

Toasticus@piefed.social · 9 pts · 23h (6 replies)

Hell, they'll give you this look even when you say you like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and of all bands - Motorhead.

People have particular subgenres of taste, but who the hell decided at one point that we should evaluate what is metal and what isn't?

I have given bands like Cannibal Corpse, Death and sprinkles of other Death/Black metal bands honest tries. To me it's all just noise and the vocalist guarantees me that I will not like them because it's just belching and barking lyrics.

paultimate14@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 17h (2 replies)

who the hell decided what is metal and what isn't?

I recommend freeing oneself from the chains of genre altogether.

Humans have a tendency to turn descriptive language into prescriptive language. So what started as artists experimenting ends up getting categorized into market demographics that are easier to sell to. Separate communities who, in order to exist at all, need to create rules about who does, and thus who does not, belong. And so what starts as free artistic expression reflects off of the audience and becomes economic and social pressure to conform to these rules. We end up with bands making "metal" music for the sake of being metal, at the cost of true artistic expression.

Is an artist metal? Is an album metal? Is a song metal? Is a particular instrument in a song metal? Is a particular bar played by a particular instrument metal? Is it even about the music, or is it about other things? The clothes, the color schemes, the fonts, the lyrical subject matter, the community? Does any of it actually matter?

zo0@programming.dev · 7 pts · 16h

It's only metal if I like it, anything heavier is just noise, anything softer is poser

crashex@crazypeople.online · 3 pts · 11h

Thank you, this needed saying! It would be nice if we could return to just playing music without worrying at all what genre it is.

FatVegan@leminal.space · 6 pts · 22h

Foe me it's the opposite. I absolutely love cannibal corps. I love cannabis corpse even more. I always feel like these bands make tge music tgey really want and not what people want to hear. There is something honest about the music. If you don't like it you fon't like it, obviously. Maiden acdc and megadeth is really boring to me. It's not that it's bad or i don't like it, it's more that i think: i could listen to worm sheppard or job for a cowboy instead. One of my favourite bands is all shall perish, i liked them before ever seeing them live, but when i saw them i truly realised that these are massive music nerds. His vocal range is crazy, because i assumed they had two singers, the bassist and guitarist seem incredibly talented, and i think they could be really successful doing "good music" but that's what they do and enjoy and i appreciate that a lot.

Nouvellalia@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 17h

derfunkatron@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 11h (1 reply)

There’s a movement within black metal that calls itself “National Socialist Black Metal” (NSBM). It’s what happens when any group of dickheads insert themselves into an existing scene or genre. Similar thing happened to skinhead punks in England in the 80s.

Some times it boils down to here’s a black metal band comprised solely of neo-Nazis and while they sing songs about trolls and despair they also do Nazi shit in their spare time. This only fuels the assertion you made earlier because a lot of times you can’t even tell they are NSBM from the music, you have to have read an interview, listened to their stage banter, or looked up a list of known NSBM-adjacent bands.

sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 10h

A-inky dinky dingle dangle doo

Well, ding dang doodle dingle dangle doodle
Ding dang dingle dangle doodle dangle
Ding dang doodle dingle Georgia asphalt
Dingle dangle doo but we dangle dingle doo

And “Thunder Rolls” by Garth Brooks:

The dangle rolls
and the dingle strikes
another dingle dangle doo
on a dingle doodle diiiiing
as the dingle doodle doOooo
dangle dingle ding
dingle dangle heart
the dangle rolls
