State of Voyager for Lemmy, 2025 edition

Hi everyone!

2025 is here, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Voyager for Lemmy.

  • What features would you like to see added to Voyager in 2025?
  • Are there any bugs or issues that are bothering you?

Sometimes I’m far down in a thread and then swipe back to my subscribed list, but then I regret and go back into the thread. It would be nice if it remembered my last position in a thread. Maybe just for a few seconds, in case.

toomuchbeer@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I’d love this for the list of posts as well. Sometimes I accidentally tap back, then if I hit All or Subscribed or whatever again my position is gone.

WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Sometimes my feed just randomly refreshes, losing my position. As in I'll be scrolling, or swipe to go back to posts from a post, but it'll refresh the posts and return me to the top. It feels like a bug, but happens randomly so I can't reproduce.

Maybe there needs to be an option to manually refresh, and every time a user navigates back to posts a little non-intrusive popup displays with "Last refresh: X hours ago" for a few seconds.

toomuchbeer@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Have seen this also - super random so I can’t help you reproduce it, but can back you up on that for sure.

aeharding@vger.social · 19 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I would like to see this too, just some roadblocks that need to be cleared - https://github.com/aeharding/voyager/issues/91

xnx@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 1y

It doesn’t need this to be implemented if its done via swiping on the bottom bar like it worked in apollo

hemmes@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Yeah same. Apollo had back and forward navigation and I miss that a lot.

anomnom@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Me too, I still haven’t found a Lemmy UI that does forward swipes. It’s the biggest thing I miss from Apollo. Alien Blue had it too for the oldheads here.

CreatureSurvive@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

!arctic@lemmy.world has forward navigation just like Apollo. Arctic is inspired by Apollo, so it should feel just as familiar as Voyager, only it’s a native app. I don’t recall Alien Blue having forward navigation, but it’s been so long I guess that I have forgotten about it.

xnx@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 1y

Apollo did this by letting you swipe on the bottom bar to go back into the thread. It remembered your position until you opened a new thread. It is a great feature

acockworkorange@mander.xyz · 5 pts · 1y

Back and forward navigation is the thing I miss the most.

sbv@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1y

This is a great feature. I miss it from Sync.

DJKJuicy@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1y

Yes, please add this type of navigation.

I asked for a "back confirmation" in a different comment for the same reason. It's too easy to accidentally lose your place.

RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com · 2 pts · 1y

Boost does that.

anas@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

The one feature I’m missing from Apollo. App is great otherwise.

Cyanogenmon@lemmy.world · 68 pts · 1y (2 replies)

The tinkerer in me keeps trying other apps.

I always come back to voyager. Regardless of the current road map, you're doing a killer job.

aeharding@vger.social · 15 pts · 1y

Thanks!!

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1y

Agreed, Voyager rules. Kudos.

meldrik@lemmy.wtf · 62 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Video from PeerTube and Loops is not embedded. Is it possible to be able to play videos directly in Voyager?

aeharding@vger.social · 19 pts · 1y

Yeah, definitely. I did a POC with Loops and it worked nice. I just need to revisit and make good privacy settings so that user can configure sites to enable auto embed (since Voyager would need to make a passive request to the respective instance while scrolling the feed).

otp@sh.itjust.works · 42 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I'd love to be able to save message drafts.

Sometimes I start typing up a reply to a comment, but I want to go back and check the OP, or a previous comment, or the community I'm in, or even the rules of the community I'm in.

Right now, I can copy my comment and paste it in. But if I find myself wanting to copy text from one of those other places, I'm out of luck (unless I want to turn on clipboard history, which I don't due to security concerns). I could use a separate app, but that's annoying.

Another thing I'd like is a better flow for recovered text. It seems that Voyager saves one draft whenever the app crashes/closes when writing a comment. It asks if I want to save or discard the comment. This is good.

What I'd like better is that recovering the text actually takes me to where I was writing the comment. Sometimes it's hard to remember where I was writing the comment, or even if I do remember, it can be hard to find it again.

Overall, I'm loving the app. These are my only 2 pain points right now.

CaptDust@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 1y

+1 for saving drafts. Pretty annoying having to write a message in a different app to be able to reference back to the original message.

ApollosArrow@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

This would be a major one for me. I crash a few times a week and have a hard time remembering what community I was even writing in if it’s not one of my go tos.

chrisbrummel@infosec.pub · 40 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I’d love Apollo-level inline video playing.

Keep up the great work!

aeharding@vger.social · 12 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Definitely will be added for peertube/loops, but Youtube would be hard to do so in a privacy preserving way.

chrisbrummel@infosec.pub · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Out of curiosity, if someone posts a YouTube link and you auto play the video, what gets shared with YouTube?

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y

In order to do it with youtube I would need to let Youtube run its own embed code, so who knows :P

Venicon@lemmy.world · 39 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Just dropping in to say brilliant app mate! It fills the Apollo shaped void in my wee geeky soul. Can’t think of anything to make it better as it already does everything I want.

aeharding@vger.social · 9 pts · 1y

Hey thanks! šŸ’œ

kryptonidas@lemmings.world · 31 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Previous Apollo user, this is where it’s at. Without Apollo support I dropped Reddit. Without Voyager I would most probably not be on Lemmy.

Apart from the known iOS issue requiring the occasional app restart, no bugs and loving the app. Only feature i’d like to see is a display of the instance in the post list. So not just ā€˜news’, but ā€˜news@lemmy.world’. Some community names exist on different instances (which I think is not helping new users, but it’s a lemmy problem, not a voyager one)

acockworkorange@mander.xyz · 6 pts · 1y (4 replies)

That’s an option, it’s already there. The future is now!

Docus@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Could you give me a hint? Gone through the settings but can’t see it. Community icon is an option, but those are too small to be useful (for me anyway)

FoxyFerengi@lemm.ee · 7 pts · 1y
[ removed ]
tophneal@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1y

I don't see it either (at least plainly) but I have noticed in my feed that the only comm names displayed without their instance are local. All comms from other instances show their names and their instance. I could've sworn there was a setting for this, but I can't recall or find it now.

acockworkorange@mander.xyz · 0 pts · 1y

Gee, I searched for it and couldn’t find. But mine is configured to show instances. It will only not show them if the community is in my home instance.

FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 1y

yes that iOS bug is annoying.

aeharding@vger.social · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Hmm - it should always add the @example.com if its a remote community. Local omits. Could add a setting to always force it on

Docus@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Screenshot, on iPhone. No instance info on any community

aeharding@vger.social · 2 pts · 1y

Ah yes, the compact mode. There could be an option for that in the future, I don't think there's a request on github for that yet.

Docus@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

It does with ā€˜show community at top’ turned on. But that makes it harder to click on the title to see the post. With that option turned off, it show the community at the bottom but without instance info

RmDebArc_5@sh.itjust.works · 18 pts · 1y (1 reply)

One feature I’d like to have is the option (maybe a setting) to recover text when commenting and then pressing as sometimes I reply to a comment and then want to read the original post again.

Thanks for making this app, it has been the Lemmy app I’ve tried by far

otp@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1y

This for me too. Reddit Is Fun/RIF let users save comment drafts. This was great for going back to check anything in Lemmy beyond the one comment you're replying to.

lewdian69@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I still want a way to go from the subscribed community list to where I was in the posts. If I'm in an article in a post and hit back once extra time by accident then I'm screwed and the entire post list refreshes.

DJKJuicy@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 1y

Yes. It is too easy to lose your place by accidentally hitting back twice, then everything refreshes.

virku@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 1y (5 replies)

This is my main lemmy app.

The one mildly annoying thing that might be a user error on my point is that if I swipe into the community selector menu, I'm stuck. I haven't figured out how to get back to where I was.

HailSeitan@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

This!

paraphrand@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

I exchanged messages with a new user who also found that to be an issue not too long ago.

aeharding@vger.social · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Do you mean, can't find your place in the post feed?

One thing I recommend for users that scroll really far in the feed is to use post hiding (with the hide button enabled in the feed - or auto hide). That way you won't lose your place, even if the app restarts. Of course you can reset hidden posts too.

virku@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

No. If I scroll all the way to the left so that I get to the page where I can select from my subscribed communities, all, local etc. by mistake. Then I cannot get back to what ever feed I swiped away from. If I try to swipe right again I end up unsubscribeing to some unlucky community.

Also, it would be nice to get an undo option in the notification toast you get for unsubscribeing to a community if possible. I just lost one without noticing which one while recreating my issue for this reply.

I am on iOS on an iPhone 13 if that helps šŸ™‚

SatanClaus@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 1y

Yup. This is the same issue people are stating where they lose their place in their feed and can't get back. Or a sister problem to it.

xnx@slrpnk.net · 15 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Searching in the settings would be great

aeharding@vger.social · 8 pts · 1y

Yeah, settings is getting a bit much

DJKJuicy@sh.itjust.works · 15 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Please add some well placed "back" confirmations. For example, when browsing All please ask for a confirmation when hitting back before returning to Home.

DahGangalang@infosec.pub · 4 pts · 1y

And/or remember where we were in the scroll list for all/home (That seems like it'd be hard to implement - even original Apollo had this flaw - so the way DJKJuicy put it is probably the play)

tuxiqae@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 15 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'd suggest the following major things:

  • Commenters in threads to be colored by their first comment in that tree (if they first commented in red their username will be red the entire tree, that way it's easier on the eyes to distinguish who's talking), idea taken from a Reddit client I used to use ages ago
  • I really don't like it when I'm on all and by mistake click on Android's Back button, it just moves me back to the community selection screen and doesn't let me get back to where I was in the timeline
  • Highlighted search in the comment section of a post
  • I'd love the ability to copy the URL to the attached content directly from the post

Also, I feel like clicking on a post frequently sends me to the attached content instead of into the post itself, maybe the post structure can be improved somehow?

Thank you so much for this awesome app and being so open to feedback

SatanClaus@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 1y

Point 2 and your also

Those are my big two.

wisely@feddit.org · 15 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Would it be possible to make it easier to copy a single word? Right now there are multiple steps where I need to hold it down, then click select text, then try to highlight a word if I want to get a translation of a word for example.

It would be nice if I could just directly highlight a word with a tap or translate without the multiple steps. Thanks for the app.

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Double tap doesn't work? ios or android?

wisely@feddit.org · 1 pts · 1y

This is on iOS. Double tapping collapses or opens the entire comment field.

Currently to copy an actual word I need to hold down on the comment field, a menu pops up where I can select "Select text", where I can then go in and select a word to use for translation.

fox2263@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Apollo had great media sharing capability. Ability to share videos and gigs and images.

That’s all I want.

Lots of images are webp but when I share them I just get the link to the file instead of a downloaded and cached media share.

Oh and when viewing responses to a comment I’ve made I’d love a button to see all responses to that comment, and then a further button to see the comment that I commented on if it was not the OP.

Thanks

aeharding@vger.social · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Are you on Android? And are you using native app or PWA? Let me know a specific example too and I'll check it out

Saving videos is coming soon btw

fox2263@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

I have the iOS app 😁

Thank you!

To be fair it only happens with sharing to Telegram! WhatsApp and iMessage are fine and parse the link as an image.

Petter1@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

These are great wishes! 😃

somethingsomethingidk@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I have a simple one.

When you search for a community, then start browsing one and go back to the search the text is gone. This requires you to retype the query for each community you visit.

It would be cool if the query was saved.

Thanks for all your hard work :)

DahGangalang@infosec.pub · 4 pts · 1y

To add to this, just having a search history would be awesome. There's a bunch of times that I've stumbled across neat things, neglect to save them off, and then forget the keyword that got me there.

Bonus points for true deleta-ability (for anonymity/security)

I don't know if it's my phone or my fingers, but I constantly have issues with hitting the *3dot menu when I try to hit the vote buttons.

Oh, and inconsistent back behavior. When opening images, sometimes swiping for back closes the image and returns me to the post list, and sometimes it backs me out of the post list and I can't get back to the listing I had been looking through without reloading.

aeharding@vger.social · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Are you on Android?

spooky2092@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 1y

Petter1@lemm.ee · 8 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Add swipe forward as Appollo had (same as back, just in the other direction, to e.g. get to last opened post (which is on the right side in feed view.

Arcanum@midwest.social · 2 pts · 1y

Second this. Otherwise I’m pretty damn happy with the app šŸ‘

DahGangalang@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 1y

I think this is something enable-able in your phones system settings? Not sure, but I think Android has those settings somewhere.

That said, if this is a thing the Voyager Deva can put it it would be #Beautiful.

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y

You're welcome!

ToffeeIsForClosers@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1y (2 replies)

One of favourite apps!

Two requests:

  1. Ability to open shared Lemmy URLs in Voyager, via share sheet to the app, iMessage extension maybe too, and clipboard recognition once in the app although this might have privacy issues I suppose. My family sends a lot of Lemmy links via iMessage and it’s annoying having to load the page, tap the image, close the tab after and return to iMessage to comment. I remember Apollo having something better with this.
  2. Block community on a post from an All, Local or Home feed. Right now you have to tap into the sub/community and then tap ellipses to get the block function.

Another thing is better search but I believe Voyager might be doing the best that it can right now compensating for the terrible search in Lemmy. And that terrible search might also be a byproduct of the federated instances (sync time, different restrictions, etc) which I guess is an acceptable trade-off for now if so.

dumbass@leminal.space · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

You can do number 2 already, just press and hold on the community name and a little menu pops up with block community.

ToffeeIsForClosers@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Right you are, thanks!!

curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 8 pts · 1y (8 replies)
  • Tags are working great! Would love to be able to link to the comment that made me tag, too.
  • Would be nice to have the searchable modlog instead of just myself
  • If I'm in a thread and accidentally hit back, I have to go back through the list to find that post again. A "last post" or something in the menu would be handy.
  • A bunch of gifs/videos don't show/play, but it works in other clients, instead I have to open in a browser. That would be a nice one to hit.
  • db0 added some flairs, which are apparently natively supported by lemmy, which is cool. They are gigantic in voyager (in comment threads when its posted standalone). Compare to the thread here. Would be great if this was supported to display next to the users in app too.

Definitely the one app I keep coming back too though, great work!

aeharding@vger.social · 7 pts · 1y (7 replies)

Would love to be able to link to the comment that made me tag, too.

That should already be there - in the header of the edit tag dialog for the user, tap the comment button. LMK if it isn't working.

searchable modlog instead of just myself

This is in the plans, just need to do it in a way that is apple/google store compliant

If I’m in a thread and accidentally hit back, I have to go back through the list to find that post again. A ā€œlast postā€ or something in the menu would be handy.

There is an issue for forward on github. Otherwise, for the post feed, hiding posts can be a good alternative if you scroll long distances.

A bunch of gifs/videos don’t show/play, but it works in other clients, instead I have to open in a browser. That would be a nice one to hit.

If you have an example of something that doesn't work in Voyager but does work in other clients, please let me know. I'm not aware of anything at the moment.

db0 added some flairs, which are apparently natively supported by lemmy, which is cool.

Neat - although it is not a native lemmy thing afaik.

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

The flair icons are just lemmy custom emoji. This is native and they should be displayed as a normal emoji size. this is already handled correctly in lemmy ui and tesseract, but voyager displays them at their full size instead of resizing them to 48x48 or 24x24,which can dominate the comments

Reading these flair from threativore and displaying them in the ui proper (i.e. Outside of a comment) is not native and I'm still looking for ui dev buy in šŸ˜…

aeharding@vger.social · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

they should be displayed as a normal emoji size

OH yeah, I did make a tweak to that recently so emojis are smaller.

btw, I noticed that they are small on db0 instance but don't look right on remote instances - e.g. https://vger.social/post/11849459

I think this is because the markdown needs the "emoji blah" class name - e.g.

 ![Facepalm](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/0442a870-62f6-42e0-91ee-a664ba65b5b2.png "emoji facepalm")

(notice the "emoji facepalm" - prefix by word "emoji" make it small on remote instances I think)

db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Yes I know the markdown text denotes them as emoji, but lemmy by default doesn't add "emoji" to all its custom emoji. Just the emoji shortname. I think the solution tesseract has is to display them at emoji size of they have "emoji" in that text, , or if it matches one of the custom emoji shortdodes. But I'm guessing the later in not possible in remote instances. Hmm, I can adjust my scripts to always add "emoji" there as well, but by default the lemmy ui doesn't add it.

Edit Actually nevermind it seems it's just tesseract not adding it. I'll open and bug report for them

aeharding@vger.social · 3 pts · 1y

Mystery solved!

curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

That should already be there - in the header of the edit tag dialog for the user, tap the comment button. LMK if it isn't working.

I think I'm missing something.... I'm on 2.32.2, I don't see a comment button

If you have an example of something that doesn't work in Voyager but does work in other clients, please let me know. I'm not aware of anything at the moment.

I can't remember what it was, I'll have to check when I see it, don't remember the URL unfortunately.

Edit: Just came across one with files.catbox.moe from this post

aeharding@vger.social · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

You should see this:

but it only works if you tag from the comment itself. So you need to long press username (on the comment), edit, write tag.

curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1y

Ahah! Thanks I'll give that a try

traches@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 1y

This is a bit of a big ask and maybe something that needs to be done in lemmy core, but I’d love it if posts of the same image/link posted around the same time were consolidated into one item in the feed.

Search bar for settings. So I can tour a word in the settings page and quickly get to the relevant setting.

hydration9806@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

First off, thanks for making a fantastic app! Just a couple of niche requests:

  1. (Likely incredibly difficult to implement) When reposting have a way of detecting that the post in question has been reposted to that community already.
  2. A hopefully simpler request, NSFW images should stay blurred even when navigating to the comments. Often people like to check the comments before unblurring to avoid any unsightly images. I believe this is done by several other apps already.

Again though, great work! Been a very nice experience so far!

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

1 - good idea, I'll have to check the lemmy api.

2- that makes sense, I don't think that's on github yet.

hydration9806@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1y

Thanks! Oh one last thing that jumped to mind! The ability to make custom feeds alongside Home. So one could add certain communities to a certain feed to only see posts from those communities.

Xed@lemm.ee · 7 pts · 1y

I’m glad it has accessibility features!

Hafty@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I would love to see a way to group communities akin to ā€œmultiredditsā€. So if I want a view of just my Apple related communities, for example, I can click my custom community and see only that content.

aeharding@vger.social · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

This would be cool! However it does require backend support for groups

ragica@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1y

I've just been checking out lemmy web client called tesseract and it has a client-side group function. This is not a multireddit function, but just a way to organize your subscriptions (basically like adding tags to communities). But i was thinking... what if i was looking at my subscribed feed, and clicked on one of my "group" names... and the client then filtered my subscribed feed to only show posts from communities in that group? That would be multireddit-like behaviour, and still use back-end for sorting/merging and whatnot. Not as efficient as server-side multireddits, but it might be a possible workable hack if one didn't want to wait for lemmy to add the functionality on the server.

bdonvr@thelemmy.club · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

The one bug that's always super annoyed me: clicking on a photo in my feed and when I swipe out it takes me to the "communities" tab where you choose Home/Local/All and it completely loses my place in my feed

I haven't seen that before - if you get a good way to consistently reproduce please lmk. Android I assume

bdonvr@thelemmy.club · 3 pts · 1y

Indeed.

andrewta@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The big feature I would like to see. As if when you block somebody it doesn’t block the entire thread.

It should only block that one individual.

So for example, if I respond to somebody will call that person Jon. And then John responds to me and I’m thinking yeah this guyā€˜s getting blocked. Itnot only deletes out Johnā€˜s comments. It’ll delete mine too. But let’s say somebody responded to one of my messages in that thread, Well their stuff is gone too. I don’t know if this is an issue with Lenny . world or if this is an issue with this app or what the problem is, but it’s a bit of a problem.

If I block somebody who is an active user in In the groups that I’m involved in, I pretty much don’t see anything in there anymore because of how the blocking feature works

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Seconded.

Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Wow so many replies with suggestions. Seems like I'm in the minority of people who thinks the app is pretty functional as is and does everything that I expect.

The best way i can put it is that during wefwef days and the early voyager days, I would look out for every update as functionality and polish was getting added. Nowadays, I dont actively look out for updates because the app is already soo polished and functional. I still like the QoL features that are getting added and appreciate them but the app is and will remain great even if development stops today.

Also @aeharding@vger.social, take breaks and relax - Voyager is great as is

steal_your_face@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 1y

Wood be nice to have a gif integration in comments where you can search and post gifs straight from the app. Prob no gif providers that are privacy focused though.

rockSlayer@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

As far as features go, I'd love for loops to get embedded!

I've noticed a couple fairly annoying and related bugs involving images on android (pixel 5a, f-droid release), but I haven't checked yet to see if it's been reported. When I select an image and then dismiss it with a swipe gesture, rarely I'll be taken to the communities menu and have my feed refresh and return to the top. Even more rarely, it will send me to my profile, then returns me to the communities menu, before returning to the spot I was in. It's entirely unpredictable from my testing, so attempts to record have been fruitless for me. Most often though, it occurs if I've scrolled through the feed for an extended period of time. It doesn't occur when selecting text threads or viewing comments though

KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The one major thing I’ve been wanting since day 1 is the ability to peruse the mod log of others without having to jump through hoops. If I’m modding a community and want to see what has been said/done elsewhere to see if it’s a one off or pattern, I have to dig for it.

From a user standpoint, it’d be great to have the ability to see the removed/edited history of a comment inline. I realize this is likely a limitation based on app store rules, but even just having this option on the web only would be nice.

aeharding@vger.social · 5 pts · 1y

Yes, I'd say there is a pretty good chance of better mod features this year. It will probably be a gated/buried setting to enable.

SplashJackson@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I would like to see mod logs for other users because I think that would be funny

Do you receive enough to make a living improving voyager?

aeharding@vger.social · 3 pts · 1y

Not even close šŸ˜… I did apply for NLNet at one point but didn’t make the cut, probably because I’m not in the EU.

Unfortunately funding for OSS in general is just not sustainable full time. And funding for OSS that is not a software dependency (part of the build chain) is nonexistent in the USA (as in $0.00 dollars in funding available).

Pretty much all ā€˜real’ OSS funding in the USA is grants by companies using the software under the hood which just isn’t a thing for software like Voyager.

Would it be possible to implement translations of posts and the ability to download videos like Apollo did?

4am@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

A couple of things irk me (on iOS):

  • Shaking the phone if I’ve opened a text editor brings up the ā€œundo typingā€ dialog, even if I’m on the main feed or in a comments section
  • sometimes, the app freezes and restarts (almost like an out of memory) and I think it’s related to sometimes when I swipe away from a video or browser view, I can still hear audio from a media player for a second. Are views being left open on the background for a long time, possibly indefinitely?

Other than that, great app! Loving as an Apollo replacement.

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y

Yeah that shake thing is really annoying.

There is a small memory leak, but not specific to videos. I believe the Stencil team already has a partial fix (TBD rollout)

ActuallyGoingCrazy@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The only bug I've run into is that I can't download videos. I'll hit "download video" and then it just does nothing. No prompts and I can't find any videos saved anywhere from it.

Otherwise I think Voyager has been the premiere experience for Lemmy šŸ‘Œ

I've had the same issue on Android (app version 2.23.2). Haven't tried it in a while, but would appreciate this being handled.

TacoEvent@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

This is frankly not a huge issue, but in the iOS app, sometimes pulling down to refresh doesn’t remove read posts. I also have the setting that shows the button to remove seen posts. Tapping on it doesn’t seem to do anything. When this happens, I just close the app entirely and try again.

This is literally the only problem I have with Voyager. The app is otherwise perfect. Thanks for the incredible work!

kotg@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I came here to comment that a ā€žhide seen postsā€œ button would be awesome as I can’t find it in the settings. Can you point me in the right direction?

kotg@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Thanks a lot 😁

deipfei@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

Love this app honestly. I have two issues that have led me trying other apps, though I ultimately come back.

First, I don’t know how to describe it, but trying to press and hold an image to save it, for example, seems sluggish and non-responsive. Sometimes it ignores my press entirely, sometimes it waits a while then just ā€œzoomsā€ the image a bit, and it often takes me 3-4 tries of trying to open the context menu for it to take.

Second, sometimes when I try to swipe back from a post to the feed, it gets ā€œstuckā€ halfway and requires a restart because the post is still ā€œopenā€ and any touch input just shifts the post left or right, but won’t actually return me to the list.

Otherwise, it’s a great app, and no other suits me nearly as well, so cheers to that!

Fake4000@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

I have an issue with voyager where if I am on an image centric community, and start scrolling, voyager would sometimes scroll down and zoom through pages of content.

If I scroll down slowly it never happens but it mostly happens if I kinetic scroll.

As for feature, I would love to have the option of customising the theme further. The dark black theme is my favourite, but would love to change some aspects to make more legible. For example, I prefer to have gray font on black background as it's easier on the eyes.

ApollosArrow@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

One thing that would be great, if possible, would be the option to choose what browser opens links. Right now it’s either in app or the default phone app. I’d love to just send articles to firefox focus to prevent all the ad pop up take overs.

Zink@programming.dev · 4 pts · 1y

krelvar@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y (7 replies)

Don't see my issue in the comments, hopefully this isn't a duplicate. I'm on iOS, 18.3, this problem has been ongoing for a while tho. When I open a linked page, it opens correctly but then after a short time, perhaps a second or two, the in-app browser locks up. I can open in safari and that works fine.

Aside from that, Apollo refugee here. šŸ‘‹

aeharding@vger.social · 3 pts · 1y (6 replies)

That's really weird. Do you have Testflight? If so could you check when it started happening?

Does it reproduce consistently or just certain links?

krelvar@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

I am not on the TestFlight version. I deleted the app and reinstalled it, it seems to be fixed, so chalk it up to a bit of weirdness. It was fairly consistent, could also have been iOS as I am on the public beta branch there and with the 18.3 release I'm not on beta at the moment since there isn't one.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated!

krelvar@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Just had it happen on this post. If I open it in safari, it works correctly, but in the voyager browser ( which I assume is also safari?) it works when it opens, then does not accept any more input - If I give it a really quick scroll when I open it, it will continue scrolling until it stops, but my taps are no longer registering.

https://lemmy.world/post/24916363

Edit - switching to reader mode works normally, switching back it's still frozen. I restarted voyager, no change.

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y (3 replies)

What happens if you turn off content blockers?

krelvar@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Definitely related. When it's frozen, unblock, it works, completely slathered with enshitt, of course. But interestingly, if I then reblock, the ads are gone but the scrolling still works.

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Ah. That sounds like perhaps it is a problem with the content blocker. Voyager calls a standard iOS API for the in app browser and doesn’t do anything bespoke šŸ¤”

i really like voyager. one thing irks me though, and it's sort of hard to explain...

when i press the back button in most applications, the expectation is that i move one level back in a tree structure rooted at the application entry point. in voyager, back is more like stepping through my browser history.

for example, if i'm viewing a single comment, depending on the way i got there the back button may take me to either a) the thread that comment was in, b) another post that links to the comment, c) a profile, d) something else, probably.

now, this is not necessarily wrong, but it clashes with how i use apps. whenever i want to "reset" an application without closing it, i usually press back until i'm at the aforementioned root of the tree. with voyager, this is difficult to gauge because depending on how long i've been usinc it, the back button may go to comment > thread > community feed > community selector > feed > comment > selector > profile > comment > thread > post > feed > exit.

i don't really know how i would fix this behaviour either, just that it feels off compared to other apps.

aeharding@vger.social · 2 pts · 1y

Yeah... I'll have to revisit at some point and check if there is a better way to do this with Ionic

thefluffiest@feddit.nl · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

First off, you’ve made a great app. Makes me not miss Apollo one bit. Best Lemmy app out there, period.

And I’m on Lemmy because I don’t wanna be on Reddit anymore. Or on X, YouTube, instagram, fashbook - all the exploitative, controlled-media, oligarch-run platforms.

I’d love if Voyager became an ever better tool for that. Give me the option to flag, block or filter out any reference to those platforms. And better yet, automatically propose / replace any posted link to those platforms with a fediverse alternative whenever possible.

Also, I’d love to get automatic context with any given link. I would love to know whether a site is reliable, what country it’s from, who finances it, what political preference it has, if it’s billionaire-owned, etc. All inline with the link itself. There’s online sources for a lot of that info - integrate them into voyager!

This age demands smart tools that make us more informed of what’s going on behind the deluge of info. Voyager could help do that.

Thanks!

Could we add the ā€œdisable downvotesā€ option that lemmy had in native settings. Ie. it’ll hide downvotes and behave according to upvotes only.

I know this is technically possible in voyager if you’re on an entire instance with downvotes disabled, but lemmy settings let you do this with a single account, which voyager does not.

ALSO I’m loving the new label/tagging system. :)

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

lemmy settings let you do this with a single account

Is that an option in a new version of Lemmy? I don't see it!

Could be a voyager-only setting for that though

Oh you’re right. They only let you disable seeing downvotes, not the behaviour related to it. I misunderstood.

i have a privacy/security feature request:

lock screen prompt when trying to switch profiles.

currently all it takes to switch is two clicks, no identity verification.

so if you have a regular and a NSFW (or otherwise private) profile, and you give someone your phone to look at a post, it's easy to switch to a profile that should be gated behind a verification screen...

infinity has this feature, and it's really nice for peace of mind!

otherwise voyager has been excellent all around! thanks for putting the work in!

The profile tab for changing accounts is dependent on the logged in account loading. I'd prefer if I can change accounts faster and independent from the account's instance loading speed.

Edit: Checking now, I'm not sure if it still persists, kinda hard to simulate for me.

The Inbox tab can be a bit fiddly about returning to the Inbox at times; it would be nice if the first touch switches to the Inbox tab as usual, but a secound touch definitely returns to the main Inbox page, regardless of previous position.

Big thanks for the app.

Psythik@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Please, PLEASE adjust the UI to prevent accidental touches. On far too many occasions I mis-tap and end up going to the community instead of the post. Or the User's profile instead of collapsing the comment. Drives me nuts! Those links are already in a separate menu; no need for the redundancy. Tapping anywhere on a post should only ever go to the post. Tapping anywhere on a comment should only ever collapse the comment.

Take a page out of Relay for Reddit, where you swipe to the left on a post or comment to bring up a submenu, and that's where your options to upvote/downvote, reply, view the community/user profile, etc. are. (i.e. Remove the 3 dots and put all those options in such a swipeable menu.) The current swipe gestures should be turned into a "slow swipe" gesture so that people still have the option to set their favorite shortcuts to them.

Please, I'm begging you to implement this.

I’m coming back to add another request idea:

Ability to search Saved posts.

I save a lot of useful things on Lemmy but it’s difficult to find again later. You can’t search Saved Posts in this app nor on the website and you can’t set up an RSS feed like on Reddit to get the articles/posts out to somewhere else.

Even if you know the precise title of the post, general search on Lemmy almost never brings it up in the results.

I think Voyager could certainly help compensate for this shortcoming in Lemmy.

iknowitwheniseeit@lemmynsfw.com · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

No matter how much I try to convince Android not to, it insists on killing Voyager sometimes when I switch to another app. This happens a lot when I'm trying to find a link to post in a reply, but also basically at random any time I switch to another app and back.

Voyager loses all state and just dumps me in my start page again. This is not fun if I'm replying, to say the least.

Contrariwise, Tusky (Mastodon app) drops me in exactly where I left off.

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y

That sounds really annoying! I don't have those issues on iOS or my android test phones. I'll keep my eye out

Eiri@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y

I used Voyager for a while and here are the issues i noticed before I switched to another app (which also has issues):

  1. Gestures for actions tend to take big motions, bigger than is comfortable to me, and the difference between actions is small. Like, I need to swipe very far (and not too fast), and then within a few millimeters, it goes from upvote to downvote. In the end i was just wishing for buttons considering how much work was to reply or downvote.
  2. The combo of auto-marking posts as read when scrolling and hiding read posts doesn't work too well. I frequently refresh my feed to only see stuff I've already seen and the posts stick around until I manually click then, go back and refresh. When I drag down at the top of my feed to refresh, I want to see posts I haven't seen before. Refreshing 2-3 times and seeing nothing new...i don't think anyone expects that from a social media app. Nearly all Lemmy apps seem to have trouble with this behaviour.
  3. I don't think it's a great idea to make "click = comment and thread disappears" the default. I often did it by accident and was very disorienting.
  4. I would often accidentally swipe/touch something, not realize what, and end up at my feed, the post I was looking at entirely gone, and no easy way to go back. To this day I'm not sure how I did that, but each time it a bummer to give up the post I was reading.
recursive_recursion@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I would love the ability to add in my own images to a link post as the post's thumbnail✨

When I make Youtube posts I use Invidious and sometimes the native thumbnail will load but most often times not. As such I often have to add in the thumbnail into the text details of the post.

Either way thank you and your contributors for the hard work to make Voyager great!🄳

aeharding@vger.social · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That sounds annoying that the thumbnail won't load. Is there a lemmy bug for it?

recursive_recursion@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y

Not sure tbh

Checking just now I found a closed old bug on Lemmy's issue pages.

I also know that Invidious has been having issues as Youtube's also changing their system which also caused outages with Youtube frontend alternatives like Newpipe.

So it's hard to say where the problem's stemming from.

I originally asked for this feature because of the Invidious problem but I do also think it'd be nice to have in general as users like myself could upload our own images instead of having to rely on external services

I try to use Voyager every few months, but keep going back to Sync because:

  • I want more control over the appearance of my feed, comments, and replies. For the feed, Sync provides:

  • The Back stack on Android seems weird. I don't use a lot of apps with bottom nav bars, but I think they should maintain an entry in the back stack for each category. Voyager seems to keep every instance that I've visited as a separate entry.

A lot of people like Voyager, so you're clearly doing a great job. Keep it up!

I mostly use it on an iPad mini in landscape mode, when lying down and casually reading. Two things:

  1. When scrolling on the main feed, if your left or right finger accidentally touches the screen, instead of scrolling, you're inside the post, which isn't what you intended. So you have to be extra careful keeping your fingers away. Be nice if there was a 1 or 2" zone on each side which only does scroll instead of tap. Not sure I'm explaining it right.

  2. Again, on an iPad mini, the Post box only shows a couple of lines for editing. Most of the screen is taken by application chrome.

Other than that, love the app. Use it daily.

Hey there! Thanks for the suggestions. Are you on the beta build? I deployed a potential fix for #2, curious if it works for you.

Am not. Happy to jump on it if you can point me at instructions.

  • It'd be great if user tags and vote totals were included in settings export/import. Losing those would mean dropping Lemmy entirely at this point since I prefer to tag rather than block most problem users. Tag import is also critical if we want to write a script to import user tags from other apps like Sync or Boost (since it'd just be converting one JSON schema to another).
  • It's a longshot since I'm guessing it'd be incredibly heavy on API calls, but a way to import vote totals from Lemmy's up/downvote history. Voyager's vote tracking is the killer feature that had me drop Boost, but it was weird for the first week or so seeing people I knew I upvote all the time at only +1-3. We can manually set vote totals ourselves so someone could write a script to do most of the work outside of the app (especially if #1 is added), but a native way would be far more convenient.
  • An option for long pressing the post thumbnail to show an enlarged preview of said thumbnail. Sync has this, if you needed an example of what I'm thinking of.
  • An option to change what clicking on the OP or community in post view does. It's an incredibly minor annoyance, but sometimes on Android I accidentally tap one of them when attempting to open the post.

The tags/votes not backing up is a bug, I'll fix that asap!

Sometimes I can't scroll voyager when using iPhone mirroring with iOS 18/macOS 15. I haven't been able to pin down what causes it to occur though unfortunately.

Weird!!

I’m not sure if this is technically feasible, but I’d like to be able to mark an entire community as being read. Sometimes I subscribe to a new community and I’m just interested in the newer posts. Or some communities, like some that present the news, have so much timely content that they can overwhelm my feed. I’d like to mark the whole community as read in order to keep my feed cleaner and more relevant.

Love the app!

Going beyond Apollo, have you ever thought of adapting Voyager to work on Apple TV? Not sure how many this would interest but there’s a lack of Lemmy tv clients.

I used a separate app that would notify me about Reddit posts in selected subreddits if they hit a upvoted or comment threshold. Could be a separate app or built into Voyager. Also helps you keep up with smaller communities if they get drowned out in the main feed.

That would be neat! I don't have any plans for that, but also I would be open to PRs, like the Apple Watch app
