Well, he's never going to leave the Oval Office at the end of this term, so the point is kind of moot.
NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 39 pts · 1y
He might have to leave bcz he doesn't know who he is. Trust me on this one, dude is barely lucid most days. If he croaks before the end of his term, it'll be a good day for USA'ians. Even if it doesn't fix the problem entirely, he's a shit stain on the human race.

Reminder that Dick Cheney is still alive. Kissinger also lived to be a 100.
Evil seems to have a way to sustain certain people far beyond what would seem natural for most others.

Is it possible to learn this power?
SabinStargem@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 1y
All you have to do, is to embrace narcissism.
Not even kidding. I think it causes a placebo effect that allows nasty people to live far longer than they should.
Kyrgizion@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y
The "secret" is not stressing about anyone other than yourself. That's it. That's the whole deal. The problem is that you're either born this way (narcissist) or you become this way trough 'training' (sociopathy). The default human setting is actually empathy though, although modern life has done a great job of obfuscating this over the last few decades.

Vance is just a more evil version of trump with more full cognitive ability and bladder control... so...
SparroHawc@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 1y
Vance doesn't have the rabid fanbase Trump has. The man has the charisma of a wet paper sack.
Trump might be able to pull off keeping the Oval Office. Vance will not.
phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1y
It'll be even more unstable with Vance in charge.
NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y
Maybe, Vance doesn't have control of the MAGA crowd at all. If Trump dies, there's a good chance the movement dies with him.
Ledivin@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 1y
You're a fucking idiot. Don't underestimate Vance or the people pulling his strings.
Trump only cares about himself. Vance actively and passionately hates you.
NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y
Yeah, uhm, well, im not, so there's that.
Second, I never said it would fix the problem... see above and read comments in their entirety before insulting people's intelligence and telling them how much more dangerous everyone else is. As if I dont know Trump isnt the one calling the shots... 🙄
Edit: We are all on the same team here. Calling people names and being a dick isnt helping anything.
InputZero@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y
I agree with you that there is a significant chance J.D. Vance would do more to harm the US and the World than Trump ever could, you don't have to be such a jerk about it. Being right doesn't give you permission to be mean.

Even if the plane itself was "free", they are voting to make a $1B gift (the cost to retrofit the plane) from tax money to one guy personally?

themeatbridge@lemmy.world · 69 pts · 1y
So much of our government worked on the idea that nobody would be brazen enough to break convention, and the untested belief that voters would immediately and vehemently reject anyone trying to openly abuse their power.
We now know both of those assumptions were wrong.
bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 1y
The country was formed when there were like 2 million people in it. We should have thrown everything out and rewritten it decades if not centuries ago.
themeatbridge@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 1y
That was actually the explicit plan, per Thomas Jefferson.
Mr_WorldlyWiseman@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 1y
I don't think those assumptions were there originally, but there were definitely a ton of them post world war 2.
Lucky_777@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 1y
It was gifted to his presidential library. So no. Only Trump can use it. Pretty fucked up huh?
pelespirit@sh.itjust.works · 39 pts · 1y
But it's going to cost around 1 billion to renovate by our tax dollars.
Hey Doge! I think you can cut some waste right here!
LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 1y
That's the part that doesn't make sense to me. It's either a gift to him, and it's his problem to take care of, or a gift to the government, and their problem.
When you get elected president your car(s) doesn't suddenly get overhauled with bullet proof glass and security features paid for by the government. You hop in a government provided vehicle, and when you leave (outside of specific instances and time frames) you hop back in your normal car and live your life. Sure the secret service is around for things, but George Bush buys a truck from dealership, it doesn't get taken to a military installation and reworked with our taxes.
ohulancutash@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 1y
Ex-presidents are banned from driving unless they have declined secret service protection.
And their properties are renovated at taxpayer expense to add secure communications, guardhouses, helipads and covered space for vehicles.
LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y
Biden, Bush, and Obama drive. Trump's the only one that doesn't. Actually Biden drove during his presidency, but only on enclosed areas I believe.
ohulancutash@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 1y
They can drive on their compound, but never on public roads.
LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y
Makes sense, I remember Obama and Jerry Seinfeld, and Biden and Jay Leno, and Bush owns his ranch, so it's possible he just drives around his ranch
Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1y
This is a really good case for sabotaging the retrofit. Slow it wwwwaaaaaayyyyy doooowwwnnn, and do all the merely cosmetic tacky gilt stuff first. Once he retires, the protective shielding and communications and weaponry won't be necessary anymore. And he won't care, as long as it looks lavish enough.
Also I think we really need to start using "retires" rather than "leaves office." Or "goes private" if it seems like he doesn't want to feel old enough for retirement. We have to make it seem like something he'd want. If we really made it appealing he'd quit early, because he's sure the fuck not doing this job for the sake of the nation.

Technically that right there would make it ok if the house passes the same. But my God, if we're going to use that qualifier to let the president have something from a foreign state did it have to be a fucking 747?
JcbAzPx@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y
This vote was against an amendment to a bill that would ban him from keeping it. Not a grant to do so.
spongebue@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

Everyone has been put under a normalization spell, the trauma was too intense too long. I tried explaining to another liberal my fears about this term's version of the January 6 insurrection, he looked at me like I was crazy. People are trained to believe the ping-pong will go on forever, save and easy.

We're spoiled from having peaceful transfers of power for so long. It Can't Happen Here.
WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 1y
Peaceful transfers of power? You had a civil war over the transfer of power a century and a half ago, and "transfers of power" via assassination are common enough for the President to be the most dangerous job in your country. The "Can't Happen Here" is due to a constant flood of exceptionalist propaganda; it has nothing to do with your track record.
frostysauce@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Banana republic
A banana republic is a country with an economy of state capitalism, where the country is operated as a private commercial enterprise for the exclusive profit of the ruling class. Typically, a banana republic has a society of extremely stratified social classes, usually a large impoverished working class and a ruling class plutocracy, composed of the business, political, and military elites. The ruling class controls the primary sector of the economy by exploiting labor.

In normal times, a clause preventing the jet from just being given to the president wouldn't be necessary. Unfortunately, these are not normal times. Even more unfortunately, because it was just a clause preventing the jet from being given to him after his term ends that got shot down rather than the Republicans straight up voting to give it to him, there is absolutely zero chance MAGA people will see something wrong with this.
