Some more than others, and I believe some donât at all?
Iâve used commercially available stuff in Canada before and it was god awful. I avoided cleaning anything that wasnât absolutely coated in dust simply because it left a film of bitter on everything. Which doesnât sound terrible except you donât realize how often you touch a surface then your face/mouth.
Iâve also used âbulkâ stuff in an enterprise setting, albeit in the US, and there was literally no bittering as far as I could tell. Granted, I wasnât abusing it to get high or anything so maybe the tech has just come far enough to not need to make the room itself bitter, but it seemed like there wasnât anything.
They do, just some people don't care and are happy enough to deal with that and get the high off it. I'm not sure it's a good high but y'know I guess whatever.
I feel like you can get better highs for cheaper, I don't really know why people choose to inhale that shit but they do.
If you want to get high off of a gas I'd say it's way way waaaaaY safer to just inhale nitrous oxide (whippits), It won't be the same high but it's probably better overall, can't say I've ever huffed canned air though so can't do a true comparison.
Just the stuff in canned air is so much worse for your body and brain.
In small quantities nitrous could accidentally be good for some people, it has anti-depressant properties, although self medication is not ideal and can be habit forming in these circumstances. I've seen my own cobwebs blown away by dental surgeries, I've also seen friends go down the drain entirely, their backseats full of empty canisters.
NGL, I'd buy that much at Costco just to have on hand and not have to buy duster for a while until I figured I could just use something like a air matress filler pump.
At that point just buy a a 5lb CO2 tank. That's what I use in my work van. It's a bit more expensive upfront but it'll last longer, it's refillable, higher pressure, and the cost of refills makes it cheaper per pound of gas. If you want to get really fancy then you also put a regulator on it so you aren't dusting as 700 PSI but that's optional. Plenty of my coworkers just tap straight off the tank.
Compressed air. Used to clean electronics. You can also use it to get high (which is what is being implied is happening here) with some very serious side effects.
I had an old, dusty laptop that needed some serious cleaning recently, so I went to the store to buy one of these. Was rather surprised that theyâd make me go to the counter and show my ID before allowing me to purchase one, but now I know why.
They get high on the propellant (usually difluoroethane), basically, enhanced by hypoxia
Nitrous oxide (âwhippitsâ) is a whole other thing that is very much a grey market drug dealer âthis should probably just explicitly be legal at this point because the hoops people jump through are kind of sillyâ. Like if youâre into cooking nitrous oxide chargers are a valid thing to own for making whipped cream and such so headshops often stock huge tanks under the guise of âfor culinary use onlyâ, just like how people only use bongs for tobacco, right
I got a restaurant I worked at to buy a tank of N2O for staff.
The kitchen staff kept huffing my beer gas (N2 & CO) despite multiple warnings and explanations that it wasnt getting them high, just suffocating them. Twice I found a guys passed out in the walk in, still holding the still running line. The gas is heavier than air, so it pools on the ground, and it was a small walk in that didnt cycle often, so this was really dangerous.
I managed to convince the owner that buying a N2O tank for $300 and occasionally 'forgetting' to lock it up was way cheaper than the costs associated with a staff member dieing on premises, especially considering the health dept would almost surely force us to replace our old system and put in air testers and stuff.
Compressed air is about 0% air, you're correct in that, but nitrogen is a part of air so it's not it. It's butane, propane or other less flamable but worse shit, afaik
I hope anyone who does these dusters realizes you can get whip it's on Amazon for like 20 bucks, then a cracker for a other 20, and then they won't be absolutely destroying themselves and their lungs. I also hate all the misinformation surrounding nitrous, fucking dentists use it for fucks sake, shits safe as long as you don't abuse it.
Had a minor surgery earlier this year. They gave me fentanyl as the drug to put me under. Was hella surprised about it. Also I see why people love that shit so much.
But also for fentanyl's danger, I think it comes down to how small a dose you need to hit the LD50/50 point is so low that you can hit it by accident without even trying. Street drugs are also being laced with Fentanyl and not in safe / well regulated doses. If you had a lab grade supplier, it'd probably be safer / easier to do safely.....but I don't think that's what people are doing...
Are you sure the fentanyl wasn't supplemental to something else like propofol? It's not used for anesthesia induction before surgery AFAIK, just pain relief afterwards. If the IV burned a little when they pushed the plunger down on a syringe full of milky fluid, that was propofol.
But I can see an anesthesiologist saying something like, "We're going to put you under now. We'll give you fentanyl so you won't be in pain when you wake up."
I want to say they gave me two stages of anesthetic, but I also think fentanyl was the first of the two stages (counter to what you're saying should have happened). But also, I'm at best an amateur at chemistry; even less when it comes to medicine. That said, reasonably certain what they gave me was not milky nor did it burn going in (you'll have to excuse me if I misremember any deets, it was my first time going under and I was irrationally nervous about it)
I could have some things mixed up, but it did stand out in my mind that they used fentanyl (and I remember how fuckin' nice it felt when they threw it in my veins). But that's how I remember it.
I don't know what order they should have been given in. Maybe the fentanyl was first? Did your tongue just go numb and your vision go dark for a few seconds before you passed out or did it feel like an angel tossed you into a zero gravity hot tub and instantly jerked you off?
It was more the second one (tho I think the dose was small enough to miss the full jerked off effect).
But it also wasn't a full "being put under" (they said they were aiming for a full under situation, but that they really just needed to "turn off" my sensitivity in some sensitive spots), and so I have at least a fuzzy memory of everything that happened along the way.
I was once given cocaine eye drops in a hospital though (itâs a combined vasoconstrictor and analgesic, which makes it good for facial injuries that tend to hurt and swell/bleed a lot). Just because something can have a clinical use case doesnât make it safe for anyone to use it regularly.
True, fentanyl might kill you while nitrous will just put you in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. With poor fine motor so even gooning won't be the same.
Donât even bother with crackers, they suck. Just buy a 1L+ tank and some big balloons from Amazon.
Also, donât do it every day, or even every other day. You will fuck up your vitamin B12 reserves and youâll quickly discover what happens. Having a binge once a week is much better for you than a couple balloons every day.
Iâd also point out ripping nitrous hits out of balloons is most definitely abuse. Ainât nobody out there using a regulator and metering their nitrous intake like medical usage.
You're metering it to one punch balloon every couple minutes! And when you wake up, you have another. It's self-regulating.
I would like to say I'm 10+ years out from the days I'd drive down to Bristol PA and pick up two or three 20 pound tanks from some random fire safety place. Definitely abusable, and easily so. We'd pound a 5h energy and Gatorade after and you're right as rain, which is not good, needs to be harder to feel fine after.
Recreational use of nitrous oxide (N2O) has increased rapidly in recent years and is now the second most commonly used recreational drug among young people in the UK. There has been a corresponding rise in cases of nitrous oxide-induced subacute combined degeneration of the cord (N2O-SACD), a pattern of myeloneuropathy usually associated with severe vitamin B12 deficiency. This can cause serious and permanent disability in young people
The only recreational use of N2O I know of is to add a tank of it in a car and pipe it into the fuel mixture.
And even that seems kinda snake-oily to me.
finally made a lemmy account just to downvote you. don't fucking do whippets they can paralyze you for life. I've seen it. And dentists use it because they have years of training and proper equipment and they understand the risks (unlike you clearly).
A once a year huff at your favorite music festival is fine but yeah, two of my friends started having trouble walking and while another friend and me realized our hearts were doing weird stuff and quite that stuff. Turns out it oxidizes the b12 in your blood stream. They started getting b12 injections but spending an afternoon huffing destroys all the b12 in an injection. Better to quit.
People doing duster are not usually the same people doing nitrous. In my years of working in a hospital, duster addicts were the worst of the drug addicts mentally and physically.
Fuck I think if I really couldn't control myself I'd actually rather just do hard drugs, at least they don't have bitterant and probably have a lower death rate.
They also work great for getting PETG prints to release from PEI build plates. Flip the can upside down, spray at the back of the sheet where the print is until it forms a thin layer of frost. Wait until the frost disappears (really you're waiting for the metal to contract, but you won't see that), bend the plate, and the part should pop right off.
...then flee to somewhere better ventilated to escape the cloud of bitterant before you vomit.
I'm not sure where you're getting your air duster but none of the stuff I've seen is R-410a. It's usually R-134a or R-152a. R-410a would be a much higher pressure. Trying to run an R-410a system on either of those refrigerants would not work out well.
Also even if they are full of whatever refrigerant you need, they aren't even close to pure enough to use in an AC system. I'm also not sure how you'd get it out of the can and into the system. You would need to make some sort of custom piercing tap or adapter for the can.
They marketed is as a non flammable non HFC air duster which you can hold upside down, often with something like 360 or something in the name. Since it's just compressed gas, it doesn't spray a liquid like the HFC ones do.

Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 252d
Pretty sure what these people are doing is the definition of abuse though.
lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 252d
You literally just explained how to abuse it though...
Aljernon@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 251d
Chronic use can really fuck people up though. Nitrous oxidizes b12 in the blood stream destroying it and that can lead to neurological issues.
Starski@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 251d
Absolutely, this is why I specified not abusing it

Fuck I think if I really couldn't control myself I'd actually rather just do hard drugs, at least they don't have bitterant and probably have a lower death rate.

I bought this many recently... I just use them to clean/dry my 3D prints off after a wash so I go through a few every year.

I've switched to using an electric one after this review video. It's been great to use. https://youtu.be/X_ncYXk1cP4

Might just be a home user regassing his air conditioner. Air duster is usually just r410a
Canonical_Warlock@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 8 pts · 252d
I'm not sure where you're getting your air duster but none of the stuff I've seen is R-410a. It's usually R-134a or R-152a. R-410a would be a much higher pressure. Trying to run an R-410a system on either of those refrigerants would not work out well.
Also even if they are full of whatever refrigerant you need, they aren't even close to pure enough to use in an AC system. I'm also not sure how you'd get it out of the can and into the system. You would need to make some sort of custom piercing tap or adapter for the can.
tuff_wizard@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 252d
Yeah youâre right, r134a was what I was thinking of. I had to look for it when regassing the car but just ended up going with hychill
db2@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 252d
It's 152a, difluoroethane. It's never 410a or 134a.
Thorry@feddit.org · 2 pts · 252d
Really? I think air duster is usually just pure CO2 (the ones without HFC at least)
lemming741@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 251d
CO2 is 750+ psi at room temperature. A pressed sheet steel can is typically less than 100psi.
If you don't use a liquid propellant, the pressure will drop a lot as you use it. The effect is worse the fuller the can is.

Thorry@feddit.org · 1 pts · 251d
It's compressed CO2, not liquid CO2.
They marketed is as a non flammable non HFC air duster which you can hold upside down, often with something like 360 or something in the name. Since it's just compressed gas, it doesn't spray a liquid like the HFC ones do.
