If you’ve ever heard of Metamucil, that’s just psyllium husk in a powder form and it’s not just for old people. Adding some of this to your daily routine has a ton of benefits. I tried to write a few sentences explaining the benefits but they all turn out like shit.

Make sure you take it a couple hours before or a couple hours after you take any meds. It can encapsulate the meds before they're absorbed into your body.
scarabic@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 227d
Well that’s a pain in the ass, isn’t it?
I believe it though. Researchers out there have shown that even things like time of day can make a HUGE difference in the measurable results of different remedies and medicines. It’s inconvenient as shit for those of us who would like to wake up, chug a handful of pills, and get on with our day.
Jarix@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 226d
Sorry for the pedantry but time of day is a something of a misnomer.
Many people live in weird and varied schedules.
For those who might need to be told, what time it is is irrelevant. It's typically the amount of time before or after something else happens that is the relevant information here so consider how that affects you if you don't live a typical morning to evening lifestyle.
And also learn what things you should and shouldn't eat or consume any time you take medication. It can easily be something as simple as substituting something instead of completely changing your routines. Unfortunately that is a trial by error thing so not a good method to figure out problems you may have with meds

Good for bacteria to survive into the colon. So take a pro biotic with the fiber.
N0t_5ure@lemmy.world · 47 pts · 227d
Humans evolved consuming a high fiber diet, but the standard American diet of highly processed foods has little fiber. Fiber is extremely beneficial, and feeds the gut microbiome, with which we have a symbiotic relationship and which helps us make things like serotonin. Consuming a whole foods diet, boosting fiber intake with things like psyllium husk and inulin, and regularly consuming fermented foods will help maintain a healthy gut microbiome. Microbiome disbiosis is one of the hallmarks of aging, and can have a huge negative impact on your health.

Came here to mention inulin as a great fiber supplement in addition to psyllium husk. Fixing my gut changed my life, the direct impacts for me on mood, well-being, inflammation, and overall health cannot be overstated.
obstructiveThoughts@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 226d
Does inulin give you bad bloating and flatulence or is it only me? Half a teaspoon will do that to me. Although, the benefits of improved movement outweigh the negatives.
picnicolas@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 226d
That happened for me at first, so I reduced the amount. Now I mix it into my homemade bread and don’t notice it at all!
shittydwarf@piefed.social · 27 pts · 227d
You can get this in gummy form, its something ridiculous like only two gummy's will give you your daily fibre intake. Do NOT take more than the directions say, my god
Anissem@lemmy.ml · 12 pts · 227d
I’ll have to try that. The capsules are no problem, the raw psyllium husk mixed with just water isn’t super pleasant
Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 227d
Costco sells a powder with stevia instead of sugar that's pretty good. Two rounded (whatever that means!) teaspoons in the morning and two before dinner for me has been fantastic. The Kirkland brand is also half the cost of the Metamucil, as well as like half the dose. So that's a quarter the price. It sells itself.
TheKracken@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 227d
Rounded in this context means "heaping". Don't level off the tablespoon when you measure it.
murmelade@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 227d
So it's fine if I use a rounded square teaspoon?
TheKracken@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 226d
Yes it's not the shape that matters it's the extra on top.
Protoknuckles@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 227d
The pills are nonsense though. Like 5 horsepills for 1 serving. Not worth it.
Anissem@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 227d
This is what I figured coming from drinking the raw powder in water. I was adding quite a bit
diverging@piefed.social · 5 pts · 226d
Does it? I looked at the nutrition information on several brands and the highest is 5 grams, about 18% recommended daily intake, per serving.
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 227d
IDK why anyone says this gives them the shits. Too much fiber slows things down. I take this stuff once a day and it just makes for less wiping and more cohesive shits. A minor improvement with no negative side effects.
michaelalf@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 226d
Maybe using the sugar free version and they have an intolerance to the sweeteners? The sugar free version wrecks my guts, but no worries with the normal type.
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 226d
Huh. That might be a possibility. The stuff I taken is in capsules, so no sweetener.

I tend to think people who are usually constipated just think a normal, healthy shit is diarrhea because it just comes out without effort.
pupbiru@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 226d
going straight from nothing to 30g/day (RDI) absolutely causes diarrhoea because it irritates your gut lining
if you follow directions like metamucil has to increase by a g or 2 per week then you’ll be right
you also need insoluble fibre, and psyllium only has soluble fibre
pixeltree@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 226d

Sorry to rain on your parade but psyllium plants soak up lead, and ConsumerLabs tested different brands and they all had significant lead, and like half of them had more lead than California’s suggested maximum. No way to avoid it. I switched to Citrucel or something generic that doesn’t have that problem.
Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 227d
You know what's good at removing lead from the body? Fiber. Real catch 22 here, drink more fiber, get more lead, drink more fiber, remove more lead.
And just to have a non-jokey answer, if it's grown outdoors, it's probably got lead in it. Prop 65 labels are on everything, making it the Boy Who Cried Wolf of safety labels at this point.

There are a number of studies that talk about fiver intake, it's relationship with consumed lead, and how that helps those conditions, like this one, which talks about the gut biome and how fiber helps you excrete lead. None of them are specifically saying "eat fiber poop lead," but they say "eating fiber and pooping lead" fixes X, Y, Z. I'm too lazy to do Z, I'm on my phone.
I just thought about it one night, and it kind of just felt logical. Fiber says don't take it within X time of consuming medication, because it can affect the uptake, and I was like, hmm, it's gotta be more than just medication uptake, it's probably anything uptake. I'm not sure if it's anything, per se, but I think you get what I mean.
nwtreeoctopus@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 226d
There're quite a few studies linking increased dietary fiber to reduced lead levels.
BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 227d
Isn't the whole point that it's non soluble fiber though? Meaning it more or less just uh, passes through.
Talos@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 226d
That’s a good point, but unfortunately I’ve never seen any evidence that your body does or does not absorb the lead from psyllium fiber, or if the fiber maybe even absorbs more lead from your body on the way through. All I know is that psyllium fiber has lead in it, and that there are other sources of fiber that don’t.

Anissem@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 227d
Just drink it as quickly as humanly possible once it’s in the water
RalphFurley@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 227d
I just eat a whole grains (brown rice, not white. 100% whole wheat etc) and plenty of fruits and vegetables that naturally contains fiber in addition to many other beneficial nutrients.
Your stool should be the consistency like toothpaste squeezing out of a tube. Mine is, albeit I go 2-3x a day , but I'll take it!
Asidonhopo@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 227d
This seems way too soft, like isn't it supposed to firm up a bit before you poop it out? Like, if I wipe 3 times and I still have soft poop behind the sphincter that ain't right. Ideally I'm thinking like ripe peeled banana or a little harder, you know? Actually drop a few logs rather than the soft-serv shape from the emoji. Maybe this is 80s-90s thinking though, from when dog poop was white.
RalphFurley@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 227d
I am not an MD but I was told this by one. But yeah I gotta wipe a bit of I'm not on my primary throne that has a bidet attachment 💩💩

Once you "clear the backlog" it settles down to a very consistent one-and-done-a-day
metallic_substance@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 227d
Yup. You just have to tank the first few days. If you're initially having gigashits, I'd take that as a sign that you need this more, not less

I do recommend chia seeds soked overnight also. For better "turning to shit" power you can use a coffe grinder before soaking.
Great topping for cereals.
tyler@programming.dev · 12 pts · 227d
Chia seeds are actually the goat in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. You don’t even taste them or feel them if you’re eating a sandwich with crunchy peanut butter or whole wheat bread. So you can load it up with tons and tons of chia.
Melobol@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 227d
Hmm, sounds great! Then it should work with hazelnut spread also. I'm still partial to Nutella > PBJ. But any fiber is good fiber! :)

I take a few tablespoons, stir it up in a coffee cup and chug it every night. Even if I miss a day, I'm generally OK, but miss 2 or 3 days, it's a 2-3 day thing to get back to normal.
