Israel’s foreign ministry has accused the New York mayor, Zohran Mamdani, of pouring “antisemitic gasoline on an open fire” after he reversed a recent order by the outgoing mayor, Eric Adams.
“On his very first day as @NYCMayor, Mamdani shows his true face: he scraps the IHRA definition of antisemitism and lifts restrictions on boycotting Israel. This isn’t leadership. It’s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire,” the foreign ministry said in a post on X.
Mamdani revoked an Adams-era order that adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which the previous administration said included “demonizing Israel and holding it to double standards as forms of contemporary antisemitism”.
Israel’s response came hours after Mamdani issued an order to rescind all executive orders that Adams issued after he was indicted on federal corruption charges in 2024 – charges that were later, controversially, dropped.

The Guardian has been massively pro-Israel for most of their Genocide in Gaza and even now that they toned down the very overt support for it, still uses two-tiered language when it comes to Israel and Palestinians, such as using "says" or "states" for statements from the former whilst for the latter using "claims", reporting on deaths by saying that Israelis "were killed" whilst Palestinians merely "died", describing attacks on civilians as "terrorism" if done by Hamas but not if done by Israel and, more generally, using the kind of language towards Israel that produces the impression of them being "righteous" and "one of us" whilst for Palestinians languages that dehumanizes them and/or produces the impression of them being "criminals" and "not one of us".
Further, The Guardian is pretty much "The Voice Of The English Upper and Upper Middle Class", who are definitely people siding with American fatcats same as they side with their own fatcats and with pretty much the entire elite privilege-preserving infrastructure over there (their coverage of The Royals is the very definition of "fawning").
They're basically the British equivalent of the New York Times.
So yeah, it's absolutely logical to suspect that The Guardian are purposefully "amplifying their messages" because that's something entirely consistent with how they've always treated Israel.
RagingRobot@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 234d
I know they are a uk based news outlet but they are popular here and market to Americans like they expect us to read it and they still aren't Israeli so what's your point?

SlurpingPus@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 234d
Oh no! A UK-based news outlet dares to write about things happening outside of the UK, unlike every other news outlet in the world. And they've become popular in the US, how dare they! This definitely means they're ‘our’ US news site, like every cowardly and duplicitous US news outlet, which is all of them.
And they're also still ‘aren't Israeli’, whatever the fuck that means despite The Guardian consistently criticizing Israel's attempts at the inflammatory foreign policy and comments, and you being deliberately blind to all of that. So what does your incoherent drivel mean?
P.S. I can still see you downvoting my unrelated comments, dummy.

breaking my hiatus to say this:
New York is the present day Lviv in what it meant to Jewish identity before the rise of zionism following the Odessa Pogroms. israel knows this. they want to re-evoke the origins of their movement. they want to control what it means to be Jewish.
but Jewishness is defined for a lot of Jews not by our connection to Levantine soil, but instead our opposition to oppression. fuck zionism forever. and fuck its need to reignite hate against semitic people to create a self fulfilling prophecy that we cannot be safe in our own communities.

New York City has 8.4m people in it; 15% (1.3m) of them are Jewish, making them a key cultural and political group. New York City also has an outsized (if dropping) cultural and political influence on the US.
There are 7.3m Jewish people in Israel, and NYC is the largest population of Jewish people outside Israel, meaning that NYC actions and opinions may have more of an influence within Israel than opinions from elsewhere.
NYC is also seen as a huge, vibrant, peaceful, multicultural city; the longtime headquartering of the United Nations there, the largest financial capital in the world, etc - all give it an emotional and cultural impact.
Here's the thing: when Americans look at Mamdani's election, we see a rejection of the current US political parties, a pushback against the oligarchs, late-stage capitalism, and the corruption and fascism of the right. For most of the people (at least on the US center and left) Mamdani's religion doesn't factor into much (if anything).
For a certain segment of Jewish Israelis who heavily lean into that identity, the election of a Muslim mayor is a threat, especially one as driven and charismatic as Mamdani. And there's a political class in Israel who is willing to promote and exploit that fear, in order to gain their own goals, whether that's increased political power, more money, or simply avoiding going to prison.

I DO think they're likely to have been behind the Epstein-Maxwell pedo ring if we're getting conspiratorial. There's circumstantial evidence, but no smoking gun. 1) a former CIA spy said that compromising people is very much Mossad playbook. 2) Maxwell's dad was a double or triple agent with Mossad ties. 3) some prominent Israeli politicians like Ehud Barak were very close to Epstein.
SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 232d

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 232d
No I mean they were financing it and arranging it. Of course every intelligence agency that knew about it would've kept tabs on it if they were able to get someone on the inside. But the most likely candidate for the actual ownership of the ring is Mossad as far as currently easily available info suggests. Not like I've done any super deep research for it.
If you have something tying Epstein to Putin, why not share with the rest of the class? It would be interesting to learn more.
Also the thing with Putin conspiracy theories is that they're usually not just theories. There's paper trails for Russian funding of right wing groups in Europe and the US. Everything was going right by the Foundations of Geopolitics playbook till he overplayed his hand in Ukraine.

It's not about identity, it's about decency. Stop killing other people!
ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com · 5 pts · 234d
Yup. Antisemitism should not be weaponized because it makes it harder to enforce real protections against antisemitism. That includes that boycotting a murderous regime (Israeli government) in a Jewish state shouldn't be intentionally conflated by politicians to mean the same thing as being antisemitic to Jewish people.

Israel owes the people of the United States answers for what exactly Epstein was doing on their behest, and if their government was involved in human trafficking and the targeting of American government officials and socialites.

A reminder that when Robert Maxwell died, the directors of every Israeli intelligence agency attended his funeral. He had been suspected of being a triple agent by the British foreign office, with funding from the USSR and a longstanding link with the Mossad, for which he is suspected of selling backdoored software to Los Alamos and involvement in the kidnapping of a nuclear whistleblower in London who then spent 18 years in captivity in Israel.
So Epstein certainly had connections with dabblers in targeting US government institutions and human traffickers.

Got into a repeated argument with a guy here on fediverse this morning who was promoting "Mamdani is antisemitic" stuff. He was extremely adamant, and was following the same type argument structure as I used to get into with the MAGAts on reddit. I regret to announce that the trolls have arrived :(
DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 234d
Anyone else get the feeling antisemitic doesn't mean anything anymore? Like Israel has destroyed it.
I feel like I could say; Jews suck, and it wouldn't count because people would just be like "He probably means Israeli Jews".

Israel and the zionist genocide defenders have taken just about all the sting out of the term antisemitic.
Racism, discrimination and generalized hatred of people based on religion and ethnicity is bad. Full stop. Rescinding the executive orders made by a crook, is not antisemitic.

Israel needs to be expelled from the United States and treated like a foreign enemy along with every politician that has taken money from them. Why are we paying for their free healthcare and free college while Americans are dying everyday?

I just got one of my comments removed for “antisemitism” without any reason why they thought it is that.
Anyone know how I can message the mod or get them to provide more details on their justification?
Edit: I think I know the reason, I was talking about Israel but I didn’t specify (so they might think I meant Jews), I guess that’s fair.

Go to the "News" home page and click on the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner. Then click on "Community Info" where you'll find a list of the mods.
Fyi - ask nicely for clarification.
