Reminds me of the time when Disney allegedly* sent a memo to workers at Disney Land and Disney World telling them that, if they didn't stop complaining about the abysmal working conditions by calling both parks Mousewitz, they'd be fired.

Within the hour, workers started calling it Duchau in stead.

*read: probably

lornosaj@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 170d (5 replies)

I get the Mousewitz part but what’s the reference to Dachau about? Duchau read like Duckau as in Donald Duck?

theolodis@feddit.org · 11 pts · 170d (2 replies)

Dachau was one if the first concentration camps in Germany.

lornosaj@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 170d (1 reply)

I am very aware, I was asking about the pronunciation/reference.

OddMinus1@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 170d

Yes, it's as you stated, a reference to donald duck. A very loose reference.

Also, I've tried to find any reliable sources for this story at previous occasions, and it seems like it's fully made up. The working conditions have reportedly been abyssmal which is likely the origin of the story, but that specific story is not real.

luciferofastora@feddit.org · 6 pts · 170d

Remember how Americans would pronounce the ch. They already basically say Dackau, so Duckau isn't a far stretch.

scarabic@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 170d

It might be that there is pun at all about them calling it Dachau and that was the point. Oh we can’t use this cheeky nickname anymore? Fine, we’ll just refer to it as Dachau. Ban that.

BigDiction@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 171d

It’s normal to just meet people where they are at on all the various platforms. As long as you can pipe everything back to customer data platform increasing scale through multiple social platforms has almost no downside and pretty minimal cost.

needanke@feddit.org · 1 pts · 170d

Don't they have a chat product?

Many. And Discord is among them.

Seems like I missremembered something.

Ah microslop kicking themselves for not buying discord

OwOarchist@pawb.social · 10 pts · 171d (1 reply)

They would have run it into the ground with mismanagement and a new chat application would become the popular choice within a year, while Microslop's new acquisition fades into obscurity, eventually to be depreciated and shut down my Microslop themselves.

As has happened multiple times already in history.

NavySqueal@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 171d

Only before microslop would have found yet more ways like charging for additional characters past a 250 word limit and connecting to a chat for more than an hour :'). I seriously miss groups/social. When microslop/xbox actually had that false sense of caring for their communities

sylver_dragon@lemmy.world · 44 pts · 171d (6 replies)

Microslop needs to ask Copilot about the Streisand Effect. As someone not chronically on social media, I hadn't heard about this term yet. Now, it's one of my favorites.

Funny enough, I've been experimenting with Copilot at work and it does have some genuine uses for looking up information quickly. Especially when trying to troubleshoot Microslop products. Between the disaster called "Windows 11", the cluster-fuck which is New Outlook and the complete shitshow which falls under the umbrella of "Defender", it's obvious that they have stopped investing in QA and testing. At least Copilot can help me find the right document to quickly tell me that I can't do something I used to be able to do in the old version of Outlook. Or, that Defender is incapable of doing things which even Symantec Antivirus had gotten right in the early 2000's.

BryyM@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 171d (3 replies)

Please edit your post to add Nopilot instead of copilot, its the superior word

bizarroland@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 171d

I've said this before that if they made it optional and gave us the choice of using it as part of the operating system, then people might use it and might find reasons to like it. But shoving it down our throats is offensive and rapey. I'm not interested in being raped by microslop.

In fact, I am violently opposed to it. If one of the people that are shoving nopilot down our throats was in front of me, I would attack that person, at least verbally, but also possibly physically depending on their response.

That's how any absolutistic regime reacts. Which companies usually are.

OwOarchist@pawb.social · 6 pts · 171d

Which companies always are.

Look into how companies are actually managed. It's almost always an absolute dictatorship under the complete control of the owner and/or CEO, who gets the last word on everything and can fire anyone at will. Sometimes you'll have a board of directors or something acting as a check on the CEO's power and able to replace them if necessary ... but even then, that pretty much never actually happens. Their power is pretty much never actually checked.

Which is why I think "workplace democracy" should be the phrase leftists rally behind. The right has put a lot of work into poisoning and slandering the terms 'socialism' and 'communism', but 'workplace democracy' hasn't been attacked like that. And it sounds very good to workers. If you get to vote on what your country does, why shouldn't you get to vote on what your company does? After all, your company actually has a lot more effect on you and power over you in your day-to-day life. Why should some out-of-touch rich guy (probably a pedophile) get absolute control over the whole thing based on his fucked-up whims and vibes? Instead, we should have workplace democracy, where all employees get a say in how the company is run. (And then, without propagandized workers even realizing that they've done so, they've taken control of the means of production and enacted a form of socialism.)

This is like going to someone's place and loudly and constantly insulting them. Would you put up with it if people were doing that to you? You don't have to be a Microsoft fan to find that kind of behavior unacceptable. Just because it's online doesn't mean that it's acceptable.

AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social · 23 pts · 171d (5 replies)

First: it's a brand, not a person. A brand can't be offended, because, as previously stated, it's NOT a person with feelings.

Second: People are just using a name because they are expressing their thoughts about what microslop has become. Doing what they did is basically telling the world they are 5 years old

Third: Look for a certain Streisand woman, name: Barbra.

Fourth: Please, don't be a shill. It's a corpo, you don't need to defend them, even you are on their payroll. They will survive without your defense.

Holytimes@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 170d

But legally it is a person. And legally it can be offended.

So technically...

morriscox@lemmy.world · -11 pts · 171d (3 replies)

First: I'm not saying not to use Microslop. I'm saying to not go to their place(s) and insult them there. If you do, don't bitch when they dropkick you out.

Second: I agree.

Third: You misspelled her name... How did you manage to do that?

Fourth: Don't be an ass. I'm not a shill and I'm not on their payroll. Just because I say that you shouldn't go to their property, insult them, and expect them to be fine and dandy with it, doesn't make me a shill. I'm not going to be part of your groupthink/circlejerk. I'll use Microslop myself but not on their property.

AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social · 13 pts · 171d (2 replies)

First: I’m not saying not to use Microslop. I’m saying to not go to their place(s) and insult them there. If you do, don’t bitch when they dropkick you out.

Again, it's not a person. It can't be offended. I'm not insulting a worker from Microslop if I say Microslop. Or is the CEO having a thin skin issue with this?

Third: You misspelled her name… How did you manage to do that?

Did I? https://releases.barbrastreisand.com/ https://releases.barbrastreisand.com/images/thesecretoflife.jpg I guess she did too? Since she calls herself like that even on her album covers?

Fourth: Don’t be an ass. I’m not a shill and I’m not on their payroll. Just because I say that you shouldn’t go to their property, insult them, and expect them to be fine and dandy with it, doesn’t make me a shill. I’m not going to be part of your groupthink/circlejerk. I’ll use Microslop myself but not on their property.

I'm not insulting "them" but IT. I'm insulting IT, as in a thing, called microslop. Which, as I said, is not a person and doesn't have any feelings. If they can't stand critics about what they are doing (which is the reason why they are being called microslop), then they should stop being a business. Or are we going to start saying that we shall not insult a company "or else"?

morriscox@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 171d (1 reply)

You keep focusing on "a person". I don't walk into Grease Monkey or Artic Circle and start insulting. I use Arsenic Circle off the premises.

Heh. I guess I'm more used to Barbara and never really listened to Barbra's music.

I'm saying that if you insult a company on their property then don't bitch if they kick you out. Just because you are not insulting a specific person doesn't mean that they have to allow you to behave badly.

AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social · 9 pts · 171d

You keep focusing on “a person”. I don’t walk into Grease Monkey or Artic Circle and start insulting. I use Arsenic Circle off the premises.

Microslop is behaving in a way that hurts customers. I'd say it's extremely anticonsummer. They are simply being called "microslop". It's like saying "Nintendon't" when you refer to their famous anticonsummer practices. People are not going to microslop discord to call them genocide enablers (which they are) or other stuff. Just microslop because, lately, they only produce slop (proof: windows 11, to name a single one among the lot).

Heh. I guess I’m more used to Barbara and never really listened to Barbra’s music.

Happens. I always saw Barbra (and thought it was a weird name).

I’m saying that if you insult a company on their property then don’t bitch if they kick you out. Just because you are not insulting a specific person doesn’t mean that they have to allow you to behave badly.

The fact is people are not bitching about being kicked out, but laughing about how dumb they are painting themselves over a silly thing that could have died really soon if they just let it be.

IvyisAngy@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 171d (9 replies)

I don't know if I was actively and consistently stealing people's data; shitting out broken software that workers will be forced to use and all but telling people to go fuck themselves when they complain. I'd be expecting a lot more then insults.

morriscox@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 171d (8 replies)

That doesn't mean that they have to tolerate it on their property. People (certainly here) seem to be expect that they can go anywhere and say anything and everyone is supposed to just take it. Companies are allowed to ban you unless it violates an applicable law and the First Amendment (in the USA) is for protection from the government, not a private business. If I talk trash about Walmart in one of their stores they can have me leave. I don't have some special protection.

CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 170d (5 replies)

Only about 4-5% of the world lives in the U.S., I am not one of them. Stop acting like a shill.

morriscox@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 170d (4 replies)

4.20%. I was giving an example. I'm not jumping on the hate train to try to placate fanatics who obviously think that anything goes when they don't like something. I don't like or trust Microsoft (and have bad-mouthed them many times) but I will not go to their "properties" to insult them and I certainly don't expect them to be fine with it. Call me a shrill if you want to but I get the impression that you just want to be an asshole and want others to be as well.

CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 170d (3 replies)

I said shill, not shrill. None of us are going to the company in person. The ceo wants people to stop calling ai slop. This is why people are calling it Microslop. Also, people are boycotting Microsoft, because they are helping with the Palestinian genocide. I try to limit all my purchases from Microsoft if possible. The company is evil, the founder was on the Epstein list, and is also evil.

morriscox@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 170d (2 replies)

I could have sworn I used shill. I don't know if it's my fingers betraying me or if it's autocorrect.

I'm using going to Microsoft HQ as an analogy. Going to their forums or groups or Discord server, etc., and causing grief should be treated like griefers anywhere. I'm not saying to not use Microslop at all, just that if you are causing grief somewhere it's understandable if you get kicked out.

Don't get me wrong. I believe that the ones at Microsoft responsible need to have an Ed Gruberman experience. I'm just going to behave myself while on their property.

CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 170d

Discord is not their property. It is just a social network they use. And what you call griefing is what most people call protesting. If CEO just never made a big deal about AI being slop, there would be less hate. But since we know it hurts his feelings, it is the Barbra Streisand effect.

I am not in any of their servers, but I am boycotting their services. There is no point in paying for games from them, if the money goes to Palestinian genocide.

OwOarchist@pawb.social · 3 pts · 171d (1 reply)

the First Amendment (in the USA) is for protection from the government, not a private business

Increasingly becoming a distinction without a difference, as corporate and government interests become more and more intertwined.

(Suppose that the government politely asks Microsoft to ban all mention of "genocide" on Microsoft platforms, while making it very clear that it's completely optional, the government just asking for a favor, and it's not at all required, no penalty for failing to do so. Probably not even an official request. Just, say, the President rambling on social media about how it would be very "great again" if Microsoft did that. And Microsoft eagerly and voluntarily bans mention of "genocide". Later, the government allows Microsoft to make a big merger without worrying about anti-trust laws, and also gives them a significant tax break. Were first amendment rights violated?)

morriscox@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 171d

What you describe is like how the Mafia leaders claim that they never gave an order to commit a crime. Al Capone was very difficult to pin down.

Since Microsoft could decline the government's "request", then I suspect that technically First Amendment rights were not violated. It's how companies have been getting away for essentially spying for the government.

TheAgeOfSuperboredom@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 171d (2 replies)

It's really not. A corporation is not a person.

A random person also does not have control over aspects of my life via lobbying and contracts I have no influence over. And if such a person existed (say billionaires) then it would absolutely be acceptable to go to their place and insult them. That's called protest.

This isn't people going and insulting innocent little Microsoft who hasn't done anything. Microsoft's behaviour is seen as unacceptable and people are speaking up.

morriscox@lemmy.world · -9 pts · 171d (1 reply)

If you showed up at Microsoft HQ and started throwing out insults, why would that be acceptable? I'm not a fan of Microsoft but this seems to be a case of people being keyboard activists who would only act that way when they think they are anonymous. It reminds me, somewhat, of the guys in college who would harass girls online but act totally different in person.

One can protest without being insulting. I wouldn't walk into a room at Microsoft HQ and start throwing insults. However, this is Lemmy. There's a mentality here that justifies certain behavior.
