In the span of like 2 weeks I discovered a bunch of new music. I never get why people cling onto the stereotype that you stop listening to new music once you hit a certain age. I'm finding new shit all the time.
Same thing with age. I’m in my fifties, stumbled into Tropical Fuck Storm through King Gizzard a year or two ago and realized that all the new bands I was listening to were all Australian (I’m in the US). Probably from watching so much Like a Version. I listen to a lot of new music based on either covers of songs I know or cool band names. My current obsession, Apes of the State, is driving me into folk punk now. A little while ago I was wondering who was making the best protest songs for all of today’s bullshit. Folk punk is soothing my soul while I fight the power.
Castle Rat are mostly heavy/doom with lots of emulation of Black Sabbath. For some reason several such woman-fronted bands cropped up in recent-ish years, namely also Druidess and Hail Darkness
I'm not big on actual 80s music, so I feel like they have some type of modernization that gets my goat. Castle Rat was the soundtrack to painting cibderblock basement walls a vague gray teal. Pretty good match.
I need to check out if Ashnikko has anything other than Worms that is good. I found the song looking for songs specifically about BPD and the list I was using said most of her discography is about it.
This is a whole subgenre of EDM called Jungle, which is probably why they aren't popular as it was never super popular to begin with and they are one group in a sea of groups.
Peeling Flesh: They don't have high production values, thought provoking lyrics or a coherent style, But it is an interesting mix of genres that fucking slams.
Haywire. Musically they might not hit me as deep and profound as say, Bad Religion. But for live show intensity… Fuck, it’s like the 90s again. A sweaty crush of humanity getting their eardrums blown while someone back-flipping off the balcony knocks their teeth out. Fun for all ages!
I think for me that might be Unleash the Archers. I ended up looking through their discography and while their earlier stuff was a tad rough, everything from the album "Apex" onward is great. The quintessential UtA single for me is Awakening.
My roommate said he was trying to find bands that reminded him of Gojira and found them YouTube. For me the one song that reminds me of them is "Tonight we ride" from the intro to everything after it's just my favorite.

I got really into Flopsy's Dream and their debut album Pleasant Pudding last summer.
It's the secondary project of Tom Davies, a Geoguessr YouTuber I've been following for years. Soft, laid-back rock that hit the spot just right for me.
I'm digging pretty much everything they do. "Trigger" is a favorite but I play the dopamine out of everything they make. That's a really rare and fantastic feeling to vibe so well with a group/artist. :D
The newest artist I got into is Amélie Farren, who came out with some singles and a debut album last year.
But the artist I got into most recently is Chicago's own Beach Bunny, whose 2025 album Tunnel Vision I've been listening to on repeat for weeks now, along with the single "Year of the Optimist", which: if you're going to check out one song from them, that's the one IMO.
Mamaleek were a breath of fresh air when I discovered them around five years ago, after thinking I've heard basically all genres already. It was like hearing good music for the first time again.

They just dropped a whole album yesterday, before that it was just singles.
I haven't listened tho, but I get the feeling each album is like a "set" where all the tracks blend into each other.
The start of every new track, is the end of the last one.
Which would explain why so many feel so similar.
The band is just a DJ and a vocalist after all. Kind of a Sophie Tucker type deal.
