And that was in his first term, when that room full of aides still existed. Now they've all been replaced by ghouls just as monstrous as he is.

I'm sure there are thousands of people unhinged enough to be willing to try that. If I read the news of that happening I'd celebrate, but I'm not personally trying to throw my whole life away for that.

The aides and advisors are as sick as he is. The generals are the picture in the dictionary/encyclopedia for the 'people who are focused on the day to day tasks that have been placed before them so they can continue to exist in their status quo.'

Someone did. They missed by inches. I would imagine they beefed up security a bit since then...
And, in most cases, it's a good thing that our head of state is well-protected. Otherwise, we'd have a new president every week and the executive branch would be a mess...oh....hmmm....

Don't drag other countries into this, there is no "West" including the USA anymore. You're on your own.
NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip · 40 pts · 149d
Saying "I don't care what you do, not my problem" is very much losing "moral authority".
For decades (really centuries but...), The West (Western Europe and North America and the paler parts of Oceania) have claimed to be the moral arbiters of the world. Much of colonialism was built around the idea of "civilizing" savages. And many of the wars (cold and otherwise) of the 20th century were similarly built around this.
The US is speedrunning the erosion of any form of credibility or high ground. But The West as a whole aren't that far behind. But the "good" news is that this is nothing new? NOBODY cared about Palestine until it got caught in the news cycle a few years back (and the Uyghurs, among others, can pound sand because anything else might hurt the supply chain). And there is a reason we all expected the most recent War in Ukraine to end with russia murdering a bunch of people, stealing more land, and doing it again in another decade.
Because intervening would have been messy.
foggy@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 148d
Uhhh
Go read British history.
America is just the asshole today.
I dont think anyone but the west ever thought the west had the moral high ground. I don't even think the west thought it.
notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip · 12 pts · 149d
This is part of what the article is saying, in a way at the end.
The ‘west’ needs to hold the pariah to account and demand change or formally disassociate with the pariah completely in order to have any scrap of moral ground in this. With each day that passes - hell with each fresh atrocity, further erodes that ground into complicity.

I think we've been well past that point for a while due to the western support for Israeli genocide. No one lifted a finger and Israelis can still travel the world acting like the worst tourists ever, like they always have been.
NekoKoneko@lemmy.world · 48 pts · 149d
If this sounds familiar (beyond 2019-era politics that we experienced, but have been washed away by scrubbing our memories with insane new stories a few thousand times), it's because this is how ICE has been treating protestors for the last year.
We have an administration that is entirely psychopathological. Empathy is a concept that Trump doesn't understand or value, and at each level of the reporting structure, sycophancy reinforces that psychopathy. People like Hegseth, Noem and Bondi (and the reincarnated phantasms of Trump's id currently doing the latter two's jobs) repeat and revel in that psychopathy because it was currency to show their loyalty to an unprincipled madman.
The thing that is so demoralizing is that the only people that matter in this world are Trump, Trump's power-hungry throne-sniffers, and billionaires. Regular citizens, much less valid asylum-seeking immigrants like above, are already the untouchables that don't even rate as humans to these people.

My violent fantasy: Trump is laid down in his tighty-whities in a 6 in thick bed of molten tar so he can't move. Then a steamroller rolls over him, starting from his feet to his head, one inch every couple of minutes so I can see his pain. When he passes out, we wake him before continuing on again.
But knowing my luck, after this happens, his supporters would just start wearing steamroller pendants and treating him like the next Jesus more than they already do.
Note: I said this is fantasy. A man can dream.
PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 148d
Any fantasy involving him suffering insurmountable pain over a long period of time is what I wish for that “man”.
NannerBanner@literature.cafe · 4 pts · 148d
Isn't molten tar going to be a pretty quick death? How hot is that stuff?
DisgruntledGorillaGang@reddthat.com · 5 pts · 148d
They used to tar and feather people as a form of humiliation. I'm sure it wouls leave burns but it can't be THAT bad.
brognak@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 148d
You may want to go back and reread about the whole tar and feather thing, it's actually way more fucked up than you may know.
Even if the tar was only like ~140F like an asphalt road can hit pretty easily in the summer, it's covering your body and sticking to your skin. But this was in a time where they didn't have fine control of heat, and was likely just warmed over a fire. Very likely aren't surviving that experience, especially when it was practiced...
DisgruntledGorillaGang@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 148d
From what admittedly little I've read on the subject, it seems plenty of people survived tar and feathering.
BygoneNeutrino@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 148d
It would honestly depend on the melting point of the tar and what it's mixed with. I guess they could just heat pure wood tar, but they had the technical know how to mix it with volatile plant oils to make it more liquid.
The goal is to humiliate a person; running around like a chicken is more humiliating than being a dead chicken. Since they wanted a show, they would have went out of their way to make it less deadly.

reddit_sux@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 147d
Things Trump is doing seems horrifying today because he is willing to do it to US itself. This was not a problem when it was happening elsewhere, when it was being done elsewhere.
What Trump is proposing has being done by the US since long. Read Bangladesh, Vietnam, Laos, Afghanistan, Iraq. War crimes and atrocities are par for the course for any US government. Difference being there is not facade of righteousness this time around.
Israel is merely a colony of the west established only to carry out its inhuman practice elsewhere. Just like rich westerners went to Africa to hunt animals, they go to Israel to hunt humans.
Edit: Thank you for the downvotes.
itisileclerk@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 147d
This is exactly what I'm saying. The US is no different now, it's just not hiding it. Some Americans hate Trump because he takes away their "good guys", righteous, "for all mankind" feeling. The US has always been an occupier, oppressor, exploiter. "Thanks" to Trump, that's no longer hidden.
lefaucet@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 147d
The real Americans have been against all these atrocities all along. We've been quite vocal, just not getting much coverage cause we, ya know, don't appeal to our corporate overlords
Common problem across the globe, really
Any suggestions on how to fix it? Kinda annoying that friends and neighbors see us as being like the weird racist uncles that think Jews are trying to replace us with Mexicans or some shit.
We just want to not massacre civilians and not torch the constitution
War crime laws exist for reasons and we'd like to conform to them.
GarboDog@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 147d
Everyone who’s been doing the no kings protest, do a full on 1 week stay at home/do not buy anything from any corpo. Don't work, don't buy. Have fun protesting this week and stock up for the week beforehand. Try and get everyone behind it. Normally we say the protests work best but truthfully just not being present will hurt the capitalism even harder. (Capitalism needs consumerism to survive, you guys really only have control over one of the two, so remove yourself from the equation and the capitalistic government will abide) it happened during Covid, can happen again and again
discocactus@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 147d
There are a lot of people who live their lives in this type of protest, insofar as is possible. The more the merrier. We have to build the systems and future we want, nobody else will.

I was going to say, the only thing I spend my money on besides necessities like my mortgage, insurance, utilities, food, clothes and fuel is 3d printer filament, small stops to harbor freight a few times a year, and I guess real-debrid. I upgraded mine and my sons computers after Trump got elected then relegated the old hardware to my home lab. I suppose for birthdays and holidays I buy them steam games and Legos but I’m not going to strike to the degree I don’t provide my kids with things I have the means to provide that I wish I would have had growing up. I think school lunches and supplies would round everything out. I donate to creators of things I find valuable but I don’t think that’s the intended target of a strike. I suppose I could go without buying filament and harbor freight but by that metric I’m striking more months than I’m not already. I can’t not buy my kids clothes as they grow or not feed us. I’m nearing fifty and bought a couple pairs of new shoes recently but all my other clothing is a decade or more old. I’ll probably need to buy a bunch of bulk socks and underwear in the next year or two.
GarboDog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 144d
Your doing great, don’t jeopardize your life or QOL of your family over it, we only suggested it would last a week no longer :) Could spend the week with the kids enjoying a family project at home or at the park! Think of it as a small in home vacation.
itisileclerk@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 147d
I know that not all Americans are the same. I know about the mass protests during the Vietnam War. One of the greatest American songs, “Born in the U.S.A.”, is anti-war, anti-American foreign policy.
But nothing has really changed. It doesn’t really matter who is president. Obama bombed as he pleased, Clinton bombed as he pleased, Nixon bombed as he pleased, JFK bombed as he pleased, Trump bombed as he pleased. For over 60 years, the United States has been the same, nothing has really changed. It’s not “in the name of humanity” or “in the name of American citizens.” It’s all “in the name of capital.”
The United States is run by capital, and capital has no remorse, no ethics, no respect for human life or the environment.
How can you fix that? I’m not that smart.
