Wow, thanks Sony. Still being cunts about copyright I see; nothing has changed since the SecuROM/XCP days...
manxu@piefed.social · 51 pts · 74d
I swear I haven't bought anything Sony since that happened. There are just betrayals that go too far to ever be forgiven.
FireWire400@lemmy.world · 40 pts · 73d
To be completely honest with you, Sony hasn't released an interesting product in about 20 years anyway
Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 73d
Sony makes some of the best full frame cameras on the market. Granted it’ll cost you like $6k but Sony still makes some really good tech. I do not own a Sony products btw. In regards to cameras, I’m using Fujifilm, but they aren’t even close to Sony tech wise.
FireWire400@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 73d
I thought so too but recently I actually met a professional photographer who works in marketing, and he told me that Sony cameras produced terrible colours across the board and recommended I go with Canon instead.
I've got no experience with either brands so no idea, my go-to was always Nikon.
Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 73d
Nikon’s camera sensors come from Sony. But Nikon engineers always do some magic. That’s why NASA uses Nikon cameras in space. Canon is arguably the best, but also the most expensive and not friendly to third party lenses. Sony lets you put any lens you want if you got the right adaptor. And that photographer you met isn’t wrong, but that is exactly why professionals have to edit their photos after a shoot. With Fujifilm I try to do it all in camera cuz editing hundreds of photos becomes exhausting after years.
FireWire400@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 73d
Really? Huh, always thought they made their sensors in-house.
Looked it up and apparently they did at some point, but seemingly only in their professional cameras (D2h, D3, D4). But Sony isn't their only supplier when it comes to sensors apparently.
I honestly don't think I would spot the issue he was talking about without comparing photos side-to-side; I'd probably be perfectly happy with a Sony alpha or something, but somehow I'm skewing more towards getting a Canon now.
Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 73d
There's A LOT more things to weigh and compare than simply a brand. Canon, Sony, or Nikon, all their latest flagships will make anyone happy. It all comes down to what you want and what you need out of it. I don't need video features or fast action sports, others do. Personally, I'd use any of those 3, but if all you care about is top of the class, then get a Canon. It will be the priciest option, there's a reason most professional use it.
PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 73d
Their OLED TVs have the best upscaling tech and I am glad they still support 4K Blu-rays because physical media is important to me. Otherwise most of their products have better alternatives.
gopher@programming.dev · 15 pts · 73d
They also make great projectors.
On the TV side, they sold 51% to Chinese TCL, so I expect things will start going downhill fast from here, which is a shame.
PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 73d
Oof didn’t know that rip
phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 73d
It's somewhat interesting as a case study, how they break standards compliance to enforce proprietary lock-in.
mal3oon@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 74d
This is unexpected, given that Sony had a really great support for allowing bootloader unlock and support for AOSP. Till today you could flash Jolla's SailfishOS on their devices.
FireWire400@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 74d
Probably has more to do with the fact that GrapheneOS doesn't implement age verification thinking about it, I'm still gonna hold a grudge about SecuROM and XCP though
A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 5 pts · 74d
Pretty sure that's still possible. I mean this whole post is about someone flashing an alternative ROM to their Sony device.

I've pretty much gone back to my 2000s era mindset of "I don't need a smart phone when I have PCs in front of me at work and at home."
But really it's more like I already have an old smart phone but hate using it and never want to have to upgrade. We'll see what Motorola can make happen.
SabinStargem@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 72d

You just have to get creative and shop around. I've had a full journey since the beginning of Android starting with HTC. Used Sony, Samsung, Razer... all went to shit one way or another.
Nowadays very happy with Redmi and Oneplus. I got a Redmi watch and it's battery lasts nearly a month!
Slashme@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 72d
I loved Redmi last time I bought one, but now they've basically made it impossible to root or mod their devices. So I bought a used Pixel and donated my newish Redmi to my GF.

carpelbridgesyndrome@sh.itjust.works · 84 pts · 73d
After going through the linked threads. Discussing graphene OS or any other ROM on r/privacy will get you banned. WTF‽
freely1333@reddthat.com · 33 pts · 73d
Because the person who makes it gets touchy on some things and started drama with someone or doxxed them or whatever type deal. It’s not like you can’t talk about it you just can’t use the word because he was going through and being weird about conversations about it. It’s nothing against him or them it’s just one of those developers being a unique type of person - which makes sense in the hyper privacy space.
RobotToaster@mander.xyz · 10 pts · 73d
He's certainly "unique".
I feel like he only gets away with it because people find the Dev of a privacy OS being incredibly paranoid somewhat reassuring...
communism@lemmy.ml · 12 pts · 72d
He gets away with it because he makes a high quality OS that people want to use. I don't see it as much worse than e.g. using Linux when Torvalds is kind of an asshole.
tdawg@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 72d
"kind of an asshole" is a huge understatement. He's said some truly unforgivable things
Taleya@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 72d
What unforgivable things has he said?
Cypher@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 72d
Here’s a collection of some fun rants he’s had, I personally don’t think they’re unforgivable but people’s tolerance for crash outs varies.
There are many other rants not collected here

diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de · -1 pts · 72d
There are other reasons to not use Linux, but Linux (+glibc +systemd +libinput...) is basically "the Unix" nowadays...
FatherPeanut@pawb.social · 9 pts · 72d
Pretty sure that is it. A lotta people in response to seeing him decry certain technologies tend to say, "that uncompromising nature on privacy is why GrapheneOS holds up so well." Which I gotta be real when I say that it really does make me feel more comfortable with GrapheneOS' development. I can't keep up with all news on it, I'm not wanting to completely audit all the source code, but having a development team led by someone like that does bring a sense of ease toward my phone.
Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 72d
So you'd ban the user for being a weirdo, not the discussion

grue@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 72d
Revoke Sony's corporate charter? Ban Sony products from being imported? Criminally charge the CEO and board?
M0oP0o@mander.xyz · 7 pts · 72d
Well all that would be great, but we all know none of that will happen. We can (and should) just stop buying Sony items however as they are not doing so great on that front already. This is the issue when brands do stupid shit, no one seems to want to just stop buying.
diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 72d

I'ma have to re-remember a facet of my life where "I'll make do" was a thing. I mean, it still very much so is... but fuck, I could be "making do" even more if I tried just a little. I don't wanna, because comfortability and all that, but I've done more with less in my past. I'm tired, but I guess it is what it is for the time being. Really wish I didn't have to because of greedy evil, but fuck 'em... good luck in your bunker, I'll smile at the sun instead
grue@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 72d
Waaay ahead of ya there, buddy. I've been deliberately boycotting Sony since at least the rootkit in 2005, and I think the newest Sony product I actually bought was a Walkman cassette player.
Trouble is, Sony somehow still went right on existing as a huge multinational corporation for the last 20 years anyway. It's almost as if boycotts aren't enough and we actually need consumer protection law. 🤔
M0oP0o@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 72d
My line was when I learned their phones had non standard screen sizes for the reason of "fuck you".
kamen@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 72d
That's strange. Any sources on that? I'd be interested to read up.
Whatever the reasoning, if it wasn't for the other things and if displays were the only criteria, I would actually prefer Sony - a tall and narrow display would work nicely IMO (if you aren't watching 16:9 videos all the time - which I am not), and Sony is also one of the very few manufacturers to offer displays without a punch hole and with very mellow corner rounding. I'm with larger hands and even so I think that my current phone - Nothing 3a Pro - 6.77", 20:9-ish aspect ratio - is just too large to be practical and I'd prefer something around 6" at most (and, as mentioned, something as tall, but narrower could work well).
M0oP0o@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 71d
I can't find it now (I looked but search engines seem to have gone to shit) but many years ago I remember an article about Sony's addiction to non standard formats and it included a quote from a Sony person when the Ericsson line first came out. Basically Sony always wants to try and make things a bit different to give them more control, think Betamax vs VHS. They thought they where just better then everyone and (they do this a lot) assumed that their format would "win". The closest to the article I can find was in 2023 https://www.bwuphoto.com/from-betamax-to-cfexpress-why-sonys-visionary-formats-often-miss-the-mark/ but it is like 20 years later and kinda short without much value.
When they went to the silly phone screen size there was some meat on that idea however, they enjoyed a position as a major player. Sony expected phone apps and such would be made in their odd format and when that did not happen, just kept the format for longer then they should of. I remember having a Sony phone and almost anything you did outside of the web or home screen would just have black bars on ether side. I was always bothered by it but did not know why until I read that article (that now seems to be lost). The reason for these odd formats always seems to be nothing but control for Sony and issues for the consumer.
I can think of a few times Sony did this crap, Betamax, Phones, Playstation disks, CD-i, wierd audio compression tech, mini disk, digital cassettes and their own memory card format.
Any others people can think of? I am now on a bit of a orphaned format kick.
kamen@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 71d
There is some truth to that, yes. But given that they're still around means that they're doing okay despite the questionable choices. Speaking from memory, they absolutely dominated the personal audio market (cassette players, then CD, then mp3/digital) - at least before the iPod came around. MiniDisc didn't stick around, but they still had players for every big format of the day. And let's not forget that they co-developed CD-DA.
They've made some strategic acquisitions (i.e. Minolta) and they're in the big three of pro photography. That's speaking just from my bubble as a hobbyist/semi-pro photographer - but now that I look at the Wikipedia page listing their acquisitions, there are literally hundreds of them.
What you're saying about phones specifically might be true, I can't speak from experience. When they had the P line of Symbian phones I still only had a feature phone with a monochrome screen - and by that time (which I remember reading in magazines) Nokia was the big smartphone player with a lot of Symbian phones sticking to the 320x240 format (so if apps were catering to that, there's the problem). I don't remember specifics about Sony Ericsson's flavour of Symbian, but it seemed weird indeed. As of the feature phones from that time, I remember that many of them supported Java and things were mostly the same across brands.
Generally what you're describing is almost as if Sony has wanted to be Apple - with the difference being that Apple has been significantly more successful in setting trends. Not a fan, but can't not admit how big they are.

dil@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 73d
Big budget exclusives sure, plenty of good games to play every year, and many "old" games get updates every year keeping them fresh, you would only buy expansions back then, while a 6/10 game 5 years after release can become a 8-9/10
Your comment does apply to Sony exclusives tho

I'm not sure there's a direct connection to Sony here (I use a Sony phone and am thus interested in this).
The initial post of the linked Forum thread does not make any connection. The accompanying reddit thread makes the claim that "PlayStation/Sony recently introduced a company called Yoti for age verification" but Sony is not mentioned on Yoti's wikipedia.
What I am reading in the screenshots is pretty fucked up though.

I agree, but Sony literally helped invent DRM. Sony went all-in on "fuck you" to their customers back when we all adored them for the Walkman.
And it feels like they have only rarely done better, since then, after exhausting all other options.
So I agree - we do jump there too quick.
But when we are discussing Sony, the ire is valid anyway.

So it turns out Yoti has a Guardian Council, as well as an Ethics and Trust Committee, both intended to keep them on the rails: https://www.yoti.com/blog/doing-things-the-yoti-way-guardian-council-ethics-and-trust-committee
They are also a B Corp.
So either there's a way to make them realise this is a gross (and unethical) mistake. Or it's another proof that self-regulation by tech companies works as well as kids grading their own homework.

So, Sony uses Yoti — and it’s using a callback method so users can complete the Yoti verification flow by scanning QR code on their phone, similar to how OAuth2 allows? But if your phone has Graphene, the flow won’t work and instead triggers notification to local authority that someone tried multiple times to “bypass” it or something? Basically forwarding their own sever errors, due to incompatible clients, to the authorities?
Is that the right understanding?

NewOldGuard@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 73d
Are you trolling or just this ignorant? If you're referring to the US laws on this, a PIN can't be required from you. Any biometrics can. So a PIN already protects you from the authorities using their legal route to get into your phone via your compliance.
ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 0 pts · 73d
I'm saying that PIN is inconvenient. Most people prefer fingerprint over PIN because it's so much more convenient but it means you can be easily forced to unlock your phone. Pattern is a nice compromise but GrapheneOS developers decided to remove it because they consider it not secure enough. Which is baffling because PIN is just as easy to steal just by looking at someone's screen.
SnoringEarthworm@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 72d
You can also have it randomize the order of the numbers in the keypad.
ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 1 pts · 72d
Still inconvenient and still can be easily stolen just by looking over your shoulder.
Blackberry had unlock mechanism that let you unlock phone with a single, quick gesture and was impossible to steal.
You had to swipe the number overlay to put a correct number in a specific place in the image. Quick, easy, secure.
