Me after Jerboa announced it is ending support

I understand the lack of desire to create a ready made ID database for Palantir but y'all need to look at yourselves and get with 2026

Android developer verification BS

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 34 pts · 54d

Well, more like it was stabbed by Google and is bleeding out, but I suppose America and the EU could always decide to do the right thing instead.

thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 53d

no

starman2112@sh.itjust.works · 50 pts · 54d (8 replies)

The notification doesn't say development is ending, just that the app will stop working on phones ruining Google's rootkit

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 1 pts · 54d (7 replies)

That's fair, but it's asking a little much of users to start direct dowloading apks or whatever to get their leftist shitposting app and if I wanted to try that hard for anything but an adblocker it wouldn't be an Android in the first place.

BetterDev@programming.dev · 18 pts · 54d (2 replies)

OK you're allowed to just not do that.

The rest of us who are willing to put some effort in will likely not notice your absence.

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 5 pts · 53d (1 reply)

Sure, it'll be just one person lol

Fmstrat@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 52d

I'd be willing to bet at least 50% of respondents in this thread use FDroid and/or Obtainium, and will continue to use side loading.

luciferofastora@feddit.org · 13 pts · 54d

asking a little much of users to start direct dowloading apks or whatever to get their leftist shitposting app

I mean, if you're serious about ideology, you probably won't mind taking a few extra steps for it. If the status quo pisses you off, why not do something that's ultimately still free and only takes a little more time?

WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 53d (2 replies)

but it's asking a little much of users to start direct dowloading apks or whatever

you don't need to be manually downloading apks. get a proper app store, like f-droid, and install jerboa that way.

I don't get it though. uploading apps to the play store has already required devs to prove their identity for quite a long time.

LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 53d (1 reply)

The difference is, they want to remove side loading.

That means all apps need to go through play store. No more f-droid on certified android devices. You need to be on play store, or your app is not installable.

Fmstrat@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 52d

You can still use FDroid and Obtainium, you just have to enable side loading manually.

Stamau123@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 54d (1 reply)

Sad, jerboa was my first experience with lemmy, but soon after switched to Voyager

HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com · 5 pts · 54d

Jerboa was my first lemmy app, which had it's quirks I think. Then I switched to Infinity, and finally Voyager. Voyager is the best app I've used.

JakenVeina@midwest.social · 25 pts · 54d (4 replies)

Where are you getting that jerboa is ending support? There's nothing of the sort on github or on /c/jerboa. I've no doubt they're not gonna register a google developer account, but that"s really got nothing to do with development of the app.

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 30 pts · 54d (3 replies)

The notification sent to users through the app itself.

JakenVeina@midwest.social · 11 pts · 54d (2 replies)

I use the app and have received no such notification.

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 5 pts · 54d (1 reply)

Another user posted an image of it if you're curious to see what you probably just clicked through.

JakenVeina@midwest.social · 4 pts · 53d

No, I saw that one. It says nothing about jerboa ending support, just that you won't be able to run it on "certified" devices. I.E. I'll have to go through the "allow uncertified apps" nonsense, and install it from somewhere other than Google Play. Presumably it's available on F-Droid.

Luffy879@lemmy.ml · 22 pts · 54d (6 replies)

Github page of jerboa says nothing about this

Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 54d (5 replies)

Jerboa the app had a pop-up not too long ago basically saying the end was near.

Luffy879@lemmy.ml · 23 pts · 54d

You mean that Google is restricting sideloading?

That has nothing to do with the Development of Jerboa. They can just as much develop an app according to Androids standard as they could before. The only change is that phones running googles rootkit won't be able to install it.

InFerNo@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 54d (3 replies)

I use it daily and haven't seen a popup

kinther@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 54d (1 reply)

I still use jerboa. Got the pop-up a few times. I will keep using it until the bitter end

starman2112@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 54d

Ditto. Imo it's the most similar to RIF out of all the Lemmy apps, and just like RIF, I'll use it until it stops working entirely

Dozzi92@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 54d

What kinda phone do you have? Other comments suggest it's for Google rootkit, and so I wonder if the message went out to folks who aren't using an Android phone.

I am also so far from a developer so I have no idea.

ddplf@szmer.info · 21 pts · 54d (1 reply)

I've been using Boost for r*ddit years ago and I'm still using Boost for Lemmy today. Shit's too good.

Demdaru@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 54d

Boost for mobile, Alexandrite for browser, I'm good.

sol6_vi@lemmy.makearmy.io · 19 pts · 53d (1 reply)

Voyager is great, +1 for those who haven't tried it. Works great with my self hosted instance.

Tiral@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 53d

Same, I really don't even use all the features it has already.

trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 54d (3 replies)

I have no clue what this is about

FlordaMan@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 54d (2 replies)

Jerboa is a lemmy client. “Browser users” are people who use lemmy trough a browser.

trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 54d (1 reply)

Right. I'll be a browser user till the end then. I have no need for apps that will use extra storage on my device without offering a significantly better experience.

FlordaMan@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 54d

I don’t know if that’s an iphone thing, but for me browser versions are almost always inferior to apps (less smooth, more prone to random bursts of laggy behavior, longer startup). So I just use voyager.

Mastersmacks@reddthat.com · 15 pts · 54d (4 replies)

Come on over to boost or Voyager

Ghis@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 54d

Voyager is sick

cows_are_underrated@feddit.org · 2 pts · 53d (2 replies)

No. You can pull Jerboa from my dead hands.

I tried boost out, when it was relatively New and it was so completely bugged out, that it wasnt usuable at all. Voyager is working, but I absolutely dislike the UI. It is way too cluttered for my personal taste.

Jerboa is just perfect IMO. It may be minimalistic, but I Mike it that way.

duckythescientist@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 53d

I was mostly using Jerboa for a long time, but I've somewhat recently switched to Boost as I was tired of Jerboa breaking reasonably often. I've found I like Boost better.

Mastersmacks@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 53d

I mean it's personal taste I guess

TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works · 15 pts · 54d

vger.app?

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 14 pts · 54d (17 replies)

Damn, I'm still going to use it until it stops working completely, but whats the next best alternative?

Babalugats@feddit.uk · 14 pts · 54d (8 replies)

https://lemmyapps.com/

After trying a few others, I've stopped at interstellar.. I like it a lot. But I'm also going to try Summit.

hakase@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 54d (1 reply)

I've been using Summit for the past six months or so and have enjoyed it.

Babalugats@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 54d

I think I tried Thunder, raccoon, Jerboa, voyager and one or two others. I liked racoon but was having issues with it. once I changed to Interstellar there was a small learning curve to get used to, but I really like it now. summit and connect have been mentioned, as has boost. But thinking about it, if I'm happy with interstellar, I may as well stay with it.

hanrahan@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 54d

went from Interstellar to Summit (posting from it now). I also use Boost

Summit is good.

Zwiebel@feddit.org · 1 pts · 54d (4 replies)

Lmao my app isnt even listed

Babalugats@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 54d (3 replies)

Which is yours?

Maybe they add them when they are made aware of them..🤷

Zwiebel@feddit.org · 1 pts · 54d (2 replies)

Eternity

Babalugats@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 54d (1 reply)

It is listed (assuming it's the same eternity) - Says it is abandoned (or submit correction) The site itself is good for grouping all of the apps in one place, but it is not in any way accurate for it's stats, or probably it's info.

Zwiebel@feddit.org · 1 pts · 53d

Oh then it was just filtered out from the view

It might be abandoned actually, haven't gotten an update in ages. But it works fine so idk

communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz · 8 pts · 54d

Thunder is my preference

bravesirrbn@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 54d (1 reply)

I switched to Interstellar and it's pretty good

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 4 pts · 54d

Thanks, I'll take a look at it an set it up as a backup.

Edges@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 54d (1 reply)

I like interstellar but it lags too much. I've mostly switched to summit

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 3 pts · 54d

I'll download that as well then. Thank you.

JigglySackles@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 54d

I've been using voyager as my backup

InFerNo@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 54d (1 reply)

The inevitable fork that will be created.

explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 53d

"Here at Google think every project would be safer if they went through an Identity Guy, whose job it is to rubber stamp commits by the entire set of people you were already trusting. He also gets threats. Don't worry, if they commit an obfuscated backdoor, Identity Guy will miss it and then interfere later instead."

MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 54d (1 reply)

I have Connect, and Voyager as a backup. I prefer Connect. It sounds like a few people here dig Summit; is it better than Connect, and if so, how?

capt_wolf@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 54d

I've tried almost all of them, Connect had the nicer feel and I was able to customize it similar to BaconReader. The dev is quick to respond and push fixes too.

Kuma@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 54d (1 reply)

For ppl who use the browser and do not like apps, try your instances ui sub domains (if they have any), on Lemmy world do we have multiple, the one I like is https://photon.lemmy.world/

otherwise: I am using the app Voyager if reading on my phone which has been good to me but it is pretty much a wrapped PWA app

Xylight@lemdro.id · 4 pts · 54d

I would use phtn.app because it lets you log into any instance, and it's also up-to-date. The lemmy.world version is over a year old

Jean_le_Flambeur@discuss.tchncs.de · 11 pts · 54d (2 replies)

Eternity is really nice

Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club · 4 pts · 54d

There are a few of us!!
Best UI by far imho (and a few smol features that benefit my daily use others don't offer or requires more clicks).

We didn't get the normal installing ("side-loading" & displeasing the oligarchy) pop-up but it still affects us.

Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 54d

I'm a big fan of Eternity too, it just feels the best I can't explain it.

dadarobot@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 54d

blorp

GaumBeist@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 54d (6 replies)

What do the apps have that the browser doesn't?

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 6 pts · 54d

Personally I just think it looks a lot better, and I prefer the infinite scroll. There are some things the browser version does better, like accessing the modlogs and such. I guess, metaphorically, those are your clothes "sorting piles" on the floor.

spicehoarder@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 53d (4 replies)

I like Boost because it seems to work really well in low connectivity areas.

thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 53d (3 replies)

isnt boost spyware

spicehoarder@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 53d (2 replies)

This is the first I'm hearing of this, I'm gonna need some sources.

thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 53d (1 reply)
Crozekiel@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 53d

That isn't so much "Boost is spyware" as it is "ads are spyware". Boost is either paid or supported by ads, either can be enough reason to not use the app, but it doesn't make the app itself spyware.

RaoulDook@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 53d

Nah, the google monopolists can fuck off right into their own dumpster fire shitholes. I won't use any app that requires their privacy infringements. Freedom is the only way.

(Written from my desktop PC's browser)

BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 54d (1 reply)

idk what im gonna do without jerboa. fuck google

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 2 pts · 46d

Well I ended up making the move to Voyager. It's okay... But maybe a little cluttered? That's a personal preference thing though. I guess you can't really complain about more features.

stardustpathsofglory@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 53d

There is also Jerboa in the F-Droid store

aggelalex@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 54d

There's thunder for lemmy
