No surprise. Fallon is barely even human. Just a hollow machine for propagating the system's needs.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 85 pts · 57d (7 replies)

Fallon and every single person involved in lining up McGregor as a guest. Absolutely disgusting.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 57d (5 replies)

ABC is run by fascists. Fallon is an employee of a fascist corporate entity. Connor MacGregor has been teasing a run for President of Ireland. He's been repeatedly promoted by the Trump Administration and its allies, including Elon Musk, towards that end. Trump is very friendly with the executives at ABC and - as a creature of the Florida political machine - the Walt Disney Corporation.

Of fucking course Fallon is going to get on board with this. If he wasn't doing the work, he'd be out on his ass like Steven Colbert and Pete Davidson would be in his place running the same dismal shit.

Obviously, fuck Fallon. He's awful precisely because he's a spineless creep and a corporate worm. But this wasn't his decision to make. Quite literally a vessel for corporate ad dollars and cocaine.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 57d

Exactly. Fuck everyone giving this guy a platform. It’s indicative of society’s tolerance and celebration of rape culture.

TownhouseGloryHole@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 57d

Fallon and The Tonight Show are on NBC, no?

Glytch@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 57d

Wrong Jimmy. Fallon is on NBC. Kimmel is on ABC.

Mokopa@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 57d

There's zero chance he'd get elected as president of Ireland. He may be seen as a "celebrity" in the US, but in Ireland there are very few people who have any respect for him any more. Those that would support him probably aren't registered to vote.

LovableSidekick@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 56d

Jimmy Fallon doesn't work for ABC tho.

LadyButterfly@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 49d

That's a good point.... there were loads of people who could have flagged this

man_wtfhappenedtoyou@lemmy.world · 35 pts · 57d (3 replies)

You can see it in his eyes, he's dead inside.

BurgerBaron@quokk.au · 18 pts · 57d (1 reply)

I agree, and his smile is plastic. He looks pained every time he does it as if he's counting in his head how long to hold the grin for the camera.

tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 14 pts · 57d

Makes me miss Alex Trebek on Jeopardy. I like Ken Jennings and he's a good host but he sort of has that always smily, happy style like is required today in media. That might just be him being Mormon though. Alex had a great deadpan humor and definitely wasn't always laughing, I don't think you're allowed on TV if you act like a real person anymore.

Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 56d

suey eyes

arandomthought@sh.itjust.works · 23 pts · 57d

Thank you, I enjoyed that article.

luciferofastora@feddit.org · 16 pts · 57d

As someone who has never seen the show outside of snippets posted as memes or whatever, that is a haunting description of something you'd use in a movie or video game to create uncanny horror.

Then the meta-horror hits that this is our world.

buttmasterflex@piefed.social · 11 pts · 57d

That was a solid read

Windex007@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 57d

I would love to build a video game based on this concept. Not Fallon or a late night show, but the anti-gothic horror described in that peice, the desperate performative enthusiastic rejection of reality.

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 57d (2 replies)

every corporate spokesperson, every one of their public facing people. are not people.

just a replaceable part of a machine that is slowly killing us all.

after work, when at home, they are people. but at work they sell their personhood to be an avatar for those corporations.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 57d (1 reply)

Let's not make excuses for these people.

IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 57d

Not making excuses. just stating that they dehumanise themselves willingly.

SLVRDRGN@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 51d

The peak of this banal nightmare arrived only recently when Sam Altman, the serene architect of our contemporary algorithmic enclosure, sat across from Fallon to discuss the most intimate of human labors: the rearing of a child, and how he simply couldn’t imagine raising his newborn baby without the “help” of ChatGPT. With the flat, bloodless affect of a man who has already priced in the end of the world, Altman described using ChatGPT as a parental surrogate. Unlike with Hilton, here the audience is deathly quiet. As Altman offers up the future of his own offspring to the black box of his company’s large language model, Fallon’s grin never wavers. It is the ultimate Gothic inversion: the living child is transformed into a data set to be optimized, while the host performs a pantomime of joy to mask the sound of a tomb clicking shut.

This article was a delight to read. It's also pointing out a lot that needs to be pointed out to the average tv-consumer.

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 131 pts · 57d

He's always been this way.

joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone · 80 pts · 57d (3 replies)

Good for her. Television in the US is about the become (even more of) an absolute wasteland due to the continuing consolidation of media control, I would hope that some of these hosts/anchors/actors/artists would push back some seeing as how they are the ones people want to see. No one is watching TV for the ads despite what they would really like

Maeve@kbin.earth · 18 pts · 57d (2 replies)

It's "programming" for reasons.

Stinkywizzleteats@piefed.social · -4 pts · 57d (1 reply)

so my middle school band teacher and my sister's piano teacher were propagandists? every recital would have a "program" that they would hand out for FREE!!!!

Maeve@kbin.earth · 2 pts · 57d

Close your eyes and listen to one of your favorite middle school band tunes, and one of your sister's band tunes. Notice how you breathe, the sensations arising and subsiding in your body. Do the same with your least favorites of the same.

zebidiah@lemmy.ca · 76 pts · 57d (1 reply)

fallon is fucking scum... how this untalented clown has a career is beyond me. his whole schtick was him laughing like a fucking moron while breaking character and ruining skits

PolarKraken@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 24 pts · 57d

His whole job is effectively creating the pre-recorded sitcom laugh track for our society. He has never been funny, like you said, when working with actually funny people his only move was to "mess up" and ruin their good work.

His only talent is being charismatic enough (somehow) to make others think they should be laughing when they see him do it. It's a laugh track, it's literally just directly telling people "you're having fun!", and a bunch of us sadly responding with "gosh that guy sure is fun". This man's entire career.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 69 pts · 57d

Text reads:

Conor McGregor raped a woman so brutally that the EMT who saw her commented on the severity of her bruising. She also had to have the tampon she was using when he raped her surgically removed, as it had been shoved so far inside her.

Why the ABSOLUTE FUCK is this piece of human garbage being given a platform on Jimmy Fallon's show?

Shame on you, Jimmy.

supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz · 69 pts · 57d (2 replies)

Jimmy Fallon would happily keep doing his latenight comedy show where he socializes with members of the ruling class even if we had gas chambers and mass executions.

FE80@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 56d (1 reply)

What has become of the moral integrity of our...late night hosts?

SLVRDRGN@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 51d

Fallon’s sterile loop of viral repetition comes the final victory of the commodity over human beings—a world where even our laughter is outsourced to the demands of the algorithm. You don’t even need jokes anymore. All you need is to say something that sounds like it could be a joke, and the hollow laughter will come. To watch Fallon is to stare at the face of a culture that has chosen the comfort of a rictus grin over the heavy, necessary terror of the truth. It serves as a grim warning: if we cannot reclaim our play, our politics, and our presence from this algorithmic void, we will be left with nothing but the echoes of a desk being slapped in an empty room, for an audience that has long since ceased to exist.

Re-read that last paragraph of the article and tell me if you still have a point you're trying to make here.

jordanlund@lemmy.world · 47 pts · 57d (13 replies)

Man, if I ever watched Fallon, I'd be super pissed right now...

velma@sh.itjust.works · 61 pts · 57d (12 replies)

It’s ok, you can be pissed that a rapist is being platformed at all. Especially in mainstream media.

jordanlund@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 57d (11 replies)

What I don't get is, rape aside, asshole is a retired injured MMA fighter... what is he even doing on television AT ALL?

velma@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 57d (4 replies)

He’s running for office in Ireland or plans to, is what I’ve heard.

jordanlund@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 57d (1 reply)

Wow, so part of a "rehabilitation tour". Wonderful.

usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca · 15 pts · 57d

Has he "found" Christianity yet? That's the go-to move to try and avoid consequences

Auli@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 56d (1 reply)

And what does that have to do with American late night TV.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 56d

He’s rehabbing his image.

Liz@midwest.social · 4 pts · 57d (5 replies)

He's doing one more fight with another retired old fighter. Also, he got popular enough that he's trying to pivot to other things, kinda like Tyson.

Butiki@mander.xyz · 5 pts · 57d (4 replies)

Connor McGregor is definitely a fucking asshole and not relevant as a human being, let alone as a fighter. But Max Holloway is not retired, even if he is "old" in fight miles. He's in fact the current 4th ranked Lightweight in the UFC, and by all accounts a very decent human being (even if he does punch people for a living)

Liz@midwest.social · 3 pts · 57d (3 replies)

Apologies, I don't follow mma too closely. Can't wait to see Max sleep Connor.

Butiki@mander.xyz · 2 pts · 56d (2 replies)

No apology needed! I also don't follow it very closely anymore. It's hard to care, when it's run by such absolute shitheads tbh. Oh for real, I can't wait!

Liz@midwest.social · 2 pts · 38d

Honestly? Honestly? That was a better outcome than watching him get beat up. Just pure embarrassment and I'm here for it.

zebidiah@lemmy.ca · 36 pts · 57d (8 replies)

if you elect a rapist president, you're gonna have have rapist celebrities....

velma@sh.itjust.works · 14 pts · 57d (7 replies)

Conor McGregor is Irish.

Though I suppose I'm unaware if the president of Ireland is a rapist or not.

Schmuppes@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 56d

I'm unaware if the president of Ireland is a rapist or not.

I doubt it.

Leviathan@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 56d (1 reply)

They're talking about him being on an American television show. He's a celebrity in the eyes of Americans.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 56d

I was being tongue-in-cheek. He’s not only popular in the US.

acockworkorange@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 54d (3 replies)

Who is McGregor? Never heard of him.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 54d (2 replies)

He’s a professional fighter, asshole, and violent rapist. I believe he fights for UFC.

acockworkorange@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 54d (1 reply)

Ah, that's why. I'm blissfully unaware of all that "entertainment".

velma@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 54d

Yeah apparently he's been platformed for weeks now on UFC and other sports channels. The outrage only started when he did this interview with Fallon.

Not a single peep about this rapist until then. All those sports channels and UFC are fully embracing this piece of shit rapist.

imahappyguy@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 57d (3 replies)

Which rape is this? He's raped many women.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 46 pts · 57d (2 replies)

This is the woman who sued him in civil court and won, Nikita Hand. Not before McGregor's goons broke in and stabbed her boyfriend several times though.

Auli@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 56d (1 reply)

What they broke in stabbed her boyfriend and raped her. Never go any jail time. WTF.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 56d

Yep. They were trying to intimidate her into not testifying.

VAK@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 57d (1 reply)

In January 2021, after prosecutors declined to prosecute McGregor for the 2018 alleged sexual assault, a civil claim for damages was launched in the High Court.

On 22 November 2024, the jury returned their verdict and found that McGregor had raped Hand. Accordingly, McGregor was ordered to pay Hand nearly €250,000 in damages.

What the fuck Ireland? You're all okay with this dumbass justice system?

melsaskca@lemmy.ca · 14 pts · 56d

Once again the rich use the legal system to purchase some "rape time" for a paltry €250,00.00.

maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone · 20 pts · 57d (3 replies)

How the fuck did.he end up in the remake of Roadhouse. Was that entire production and cast made up of right wingers and misogynists?

Did not a single person involved read his Wikipedia and ask "what the fuck are we doing?"

velma@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 57d (2 replies)

They read his Wikipedia and said “that’s our guy!”

Soapbox@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 57d (1 reply)

velma@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 57d

He should be blacklisted everywhere.

lime@feddit.nu · 3 pts · 57d

i think so? i've only read it in the news here and they don't really separate the two.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 12 pts · 56d

Said it before and I'll say it again, I'm 100% convinced that Horatio Sanz took the fall for shit that he and Jimmy Fallon were both doing. But Jimmy was NBC's golden boy, so they covered it up.

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 56d (10 replies)

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 56d (5 replies)

Sure but that cunt still keeps the money, money that basically came out of the players pockets.

nodiratime@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 56d (4 replies)

He was very obvs an asshole before, granted.

But what do you want them to do? Sue him for damages after they kicked him? Maybe they should reconsider their contracts in the future and add clauses for "if it later becomes known you are the scum of the earth, this contracts is voided and you owe us the money + damages", but would this stand up? Without looking further into it, they did all they could do. But maybe I'm too lenient.

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 56d (1 reply)

Dude was already a known abuser before IOI gave him a bag of money not just an asshole, basically punching people that didn’t kiss his feet. He even punched an old man who refused a drink McGregor offered. I would have liked that they never gave him any money. Hence why I stopped buying their games, if they had a lapse of judgement before they might have it again in the future.

nodiratime@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 56d

Aleight, I looked it up and the first case was brought way before the release of the DLC. Also, he appeared with the turd in chief, which I forgot about. Not buying hitman games in the future either, although they made it to my wishlist some weeks ago. Opinion changed, thanks!

cactusupyourbutt@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 56d

noone would accept such a contract, its way to risky

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 56d

I still don't get the appeal of having celebrities in video games in the first place tbh. Screams to me "we have a lot of money to throw at this game but no idea how to use it to make a fun game so instead we'll buy some name recognition".

I would like to understand why, when ask these questions, which demand a sober, reflective response after some internal dialogue, we stop there, and seem to gloss over what I consider important follow ups:

  • Why in the fuck do we have a thing called "Ultimate Fighting Champion" and still think men should be treated with any degree of seriousness?
  • Have we considered that there is actually enough fighting already and being an ultimate champion of it is not the flex some think it is?
  • Having considered the first 2, why would anyone care about/admire/wish to be seen in the vicinity of the winner of this thing, let alone any rando participant?
  • Have we considered there might be a causal connection between his rapey-ness and his ultimate fighter champion-ness? Sex and violence do go to the same concerts a lot...

I can't think of a single thing that would make my wish I had my time back more than spending 30 seconds watching this fucking drivel. It's pig swill distilled into electromagnetic waves meant for things with a lot less folds in the cerebellum.

winkledinkle@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 56d (8 replies)

men should be treated with any degree of seriousness?

Regardless of gender, if you're sexist you should never feel like you're taken seriously.

On that note, LOL.

velma@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 56d (7 replies)

It’s a little funny you’re commenting this on a post where McGregor is clearly being taken seriously.

Linktank@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 56d (6 replies)

Ah yes, one man bad means all men bad. Good argument from OP and that other mouth breather.

velma@sh.itjust.works · -1 pts · 56d (5 replies)

You’re the only one resorting to name calling though.

No one said McGregor represents all men. You are the only one to conflate this man with all men.

Soulg@ani.social · 4 pts · 56d (4 replies)

That other commenter was very clearly attacking men as a gender when whining about the UFC. I don't even like the UFC but it was blatantly sexist.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 56d (3 replies)

Regardless of gender, if you're sexist you should never feel like you're taken seriously.

And I was replying to this line directly.

McGregor is being taken seriously despite being sexist. And a rapist.

winkledinkle@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 56d

Why are you conflating that with me taking McGregor seriously? I think he should get hit by a bus and lose everything that makes him special.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 9 pts · 56d (2 replies)

I'm not one to defend the UFC, I think Dana White is a piece of shit. But as someone who used to be into it, this just seems like a complete misunderstanding of MMA.

Also, women do it too fyi. So not sure why you think this only reflects on men.

Boxing has existed for literally thousands of years. Wrestling and Pankration even longer I believe. The latter was an event in the first Olympics, and it's very similar to modern MMA.

This particular event was a travesty, but not because of mixed martial arts. You're angry at the wrong people.

Rekorse@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 56d (1 reply)

Appealing to history isn't as strong as you might think, when we are talking about whether or not society should promote a social activity.

jaemo@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 56d

Yeah like the Greeks did have some super cool ideas (democracy good, though flawed a bit, and that's some sweet beards y'all). But also a lot of fucking terrible ones. I'm not going to put wrestling on the same pillar as "we all get to decide who's in charge".

One is a more valuable contribution that is literally the opposite of "might makes right" and the other is.....more or less a metaphor for it. I have to say that equivocation got a good belly laugh, along with the assertion that I didn't "understand MMA" (as though bread and circus was a deep subject).

HubertManne@piefed.social · 1 pts · 51d (24 replies)

I get the feeling but isn't it more of an issue that apparently its locked in he raped someone but is not in jail?

velma@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 51d (23 replies)

....yes?

That ship has sailed already though. They declined to push forward with prosecuting him. So his victim had to sue him in civil court.

All of the decisions and actions that led to this man getting a chance at rehabbing his image after violently raping a woman are the problem. All of them and all of the people making them.

HubertManne@piefed.social · -1 pts · 51d (22 replies)

HubertManne@piefed.social · -1 pts · 51d (19 replies)

I certainly view wealth disparity as the driver of the majority of our societies problems.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 51d (18 replies)

That doesn't erase the societal problems caused by the patriarchy.

Look at Cesar Chavez.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 2 pts · 51d (17 replies)

Cesar Chavez is the same issue. Power should not be centralized even in celebrity. Its the ideals and laws that are important.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 51d

Even the men who push for class solidarity are perpetrators of sexism. Because even in the working class, women are subjugated and pushed lower and treated as less than.

Men are inherently in a position of power within the patriarchy. They don't need to have their power centralized in order to rape others, they already have.

Who thinks it is okay?

That kind of rhetoric is so dumb. I don't know what all McGreggor did, but who condones it? Fallon and his producers? People a part of the Hollywood machine that is full of also rapists?

velma@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 57d (29 replies)

I'm sorry, I think I don't understand your comment.

There's clearly many people who think this is okay. Or at least that rape isn't bad enough to blacklist rapists like McGregor.

SalamiDommie@lemmus.org · -5 pts · 57d (28 replies)

Many? Who other than than those who want to abuse others like that?

I am not condoning or justifying the act. I am saying that there is a small portion of the population who is comfortable with it. Other rapists themselves.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 56d (27 replies)

This man has been given other opportunities as well. This is not just rapists helping rapists.

No one cares enough about rape to do anything about rapists. It’s built into our society.

FFS look at who the US elected. He’s certainly not in prison either.

You are being willfully blind to think that this is just about other rapists supporting McGregor.

SalamiDommie@lemmus.org · -5 pts · 56d (26 replies)

I don't personally know anyone okay with it. I don't know who, out on regular society, would be.

And even conservatives aren't comfortable with Trump.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 56d (25 replies)

I’m almost impressed how you’re able to waive rape acceptance and rape culture away so easily.

I wish I lived in the world you do.

It’s not an accident that McGregor is being platformed after brutally raping women. It’s not a weird glitch that a rapist was elected twice in the US.

SalamiDommie@lemmus.org · -3 pts · 55d (24 replies)

I am not waiving it away. I am saying it doesn't exist in the way your level of rhetoric typically suggests.

It exists in Hollywood and politics. It doesn't exist in the culture at large. McGreggor gets to walk while Cain Velasquez chased down the abuser of his kid.

But the Mexican is the bad guy apparently.

I'm curious what your actual take is on these numbers I posted for you. Do you think all 400k+ people who experience sexual violence each year in the US are lying? Or do you think it's all committed by politicians and Hollywood types?
