You can build or buy a lot more computer than the Steam Machine for $3000, even at today's absurd component prices. I'm not quite sure which is more moronic, trying to scalp a Steam Machine for that price or somebody actually paying it.

DaddleDew@lemmy.world · 94 pts · 47d (1 reply)

Scalpers are low lifes who don't necessarily know much about the products they scalp. They must have thought it was going to be the same as the last few generations of gaming console releases.

I also believe that the typical potential customer for a Steam Machine will know better.

dudeface@lemmy.world · 44 pts · 47d

I’ll always remember going to a rise against concert and scalpers outside were saying “tickets for rise against the machine”, they have no idea what they are selling

Could also be people who just like the form factor but valve refuse to sell it to them directly because international shipping is too complicated for a small startup like valve. /s

I didn't actually see any that sold for that price. Highest I'm seeing currently is 2000. Your comment is still valid at $2000 though.

scarabic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 46d

For some people, there is no difference between $1000 and $3000. Both are amounts they won’t miss, and availability of the SteamBox is low right now so they’re happy to pay it to get faster access. Tell them they can get a more powerful gaming PC for $3000 and they don’t care. They want to try the Steambox and money is no object.

Basically, don’t necessarily attribute to stupidity what can also be explained by wealth.

hperrin@lemmy.ca · 61 pts · 47d (3 replies)

Why? It’s not even that compelling at the normal price. If it were 3x the price, who would possibly want to buy it?

Apparently you can get those listings easily removed by reporting them that the seller sells an "intangible item". Which is true, since a reservation is indeed not a tangible item.

kamen@lemmy.world · 47 pts · 46d (14 replies)

If you buy from scalpers, you're part of the problem.

dustyData@lemmy.world · -29 pts · 46d (13 replies)

“If you pirate games, you're part of the problem.”

Scalpers exists because Valve's supply chains is weak and their commerce channel is poor. If you can buy from a scalper and get the machine on launch day, or pay Valve and get it in 9 months, then the value proposition is clear and obvious. I won't defend scalpers, just like I won't defend scene pirates like FitGirl. I'm sure most of them are scammers, but scalping is a service problem as well. People are paying for convenience and access*. Similarly to stuff like ticket scalping, they are all scumbags, but they exist as a failure of marketing, not because of the moral failure of the buyers. They are just using their only means of access and convenience left, once the real seller abandoned them as customers.

EDIT: I know a lot of people will downvote due to the piracy comparison. But remember that Valve ships hardware to only 10% of the world. Specifically the global North and the westernized world. Everyone else can't even get to the lottery. On the other hand, there's no problem for most of the planet on acquiring any current console or pre-build PC. While at the same time they have publicly said they have issues acquiring their necessary OEM parts to manufacture their hardware. Valve has a supply chain problem, and scalpers are abusing that. These scalpers are not artificially creating scarcity by buying all existing stock to charge higher prices, they are abusing the already existing scarcity and extremely high demand. Scalping is a service problem, get to terms with that.

*: even if they are rich fucks with FOMO and more money than sense. They are still buying convenience that Valve can't offer right now.

kent_eh@lemmy.ca · 20 pts · 46d (2 replies)

“If you pirate games, you're part of the problem.”

samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 14 pts · 46d

dustyData@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 46d

Usenet server's subscriptions cost money and many torrent trackers rely on donations to keep up the game piracy scene. People are in fact giving pirates money.

Nikelui@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 46d (1 reply)

Absolutely not. Scalpers thrive on scarcity (artificial or otherwise) which is why they make sure to hoard everything they can so that no one else can buy it from official channels. They bring no convenience, they are just parasites who make everything worse.

dustyData@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 46d

Scalpers thrive on scarcity

That is exactly my point. Valve's hands are tied, as long as they have a scarcity problem, there will be scalpers. Lottery is helping, but it is not the long term solution. Case in point, Steam Deck and Steam Controller are still the only way 90% of the planet can ever hope to acquire that hardware. I want to give my money to Valve, but they won't take it, they won't serve me as a customer. eBay sellers will.

Ismay@programming.dev · 4 pts · 46d (5 replies)

That's a really shitty take my friend. Scalpers are people with money and time that are creating scarcity.

They're basically building a temporary monopole to impose stupid price. It should be illegal just like concert ticket reselling is being blocked in a lot of country.

They are shitty people who don't give a flying fuck about anyone else and who would sell their mother's if they could. Soulless husk

dustyData@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 46d (4 replies)

I agree in like 99% of the times there's no scarcity and scalpers cause the scarcity artificially via wholesale of the entire stock. But this is not what is afflicting Valve. They have a supply chain issue, high problems with scarcity and scalpers are exploiting that. Blaming the buyers is akin to blaming individual torrenters for piracy. It is a service problem.

Ismay@programming.dev · 3 pts · 46d (3 replies)

Just like for any product... Give me one awaited product that didn't get recked by scalpers.

Ps5, switch 2, ... Hell even ram...

When you have enough money, scarcity is easily created. What would you want ? To have businesses to have production lines that can handle release volume? What do you do with them after, when the demand is slowing, it's faaaaaaarrrr from free.

dustyData@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 46d (2 replies)

Agreed, the point is that this applies to launch windows specially, but afterwards it is a supply and demand problem. Scum scalpers manufacturing scarcity by buying stock. It affected the PS5 launch. 6 years later, the PS5 is everywhere in brick and mortar shops. I can go buy one right now, no problem, even online if I wanted. At official prices and through legitimate channels. The Switch 2 was available in my country on launch day, Nintendo has that kind of supply chain today. Valve's Steam Deck, 4 years later, I cannot buy it, nowhere. Valve won't sell it to me. If I go to eBay, any reseller will ship it to my doorstep right away. This is an indication that Valve's problem with hardware goes beyond typical scumbag scalping. They have a supply chain problem. It is because of OEM cartels and a lack of reputation as a hardware manufacturer, perhaps. But it is there. I have never seen Valve's hardware in person, and probably never will, unless I go to the resell market.

Ismay@programming.dev · 2 pts · 45d (1 reply)

I see your point. It's evident valve don't have the production power of a Sony (even if they got absolutely destroyed for months for each release) or Nintendo.

I don't know if it's really a "problem" per se. They're a lot smaller as a hardware builder so they can't have the same infrastructures,I don't think the demand would be strong enough. But that certainly makes them an easier target for scalpers

dustyData@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 45d

They have repeatedly gone on record saying they always underestimated demand for their hardware. They said it for the Deck, for both controllers, and now for the Steam Machine. I wonder how much of that is due to being burned so badly by the original steam machines program and some sort of collective PTSD, or do they genuinely suck so much at marketing that they have no idea that people want real hardware competition in the gaming space. I know that market analysis is the hardest part of marketing. But underestimating demand for a decade straight? something's is off. It gives me flashbacks to when the Orange Box came out and it was sold out almost immediately to become one of PC game most culturally influential contribution to the internet. Yet they were so slow to order reprints (they were knee deep in rolling out Steam Store). It's like they have zero confidence on their own products.

kamen@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 46d (1 reply)

You're part of the problem.

dustyData@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 46d

I literally cannot be part of the problem, because: first, I don't buy from scalpers, never have, never will. And secondly, Valve doesn't recognize me as a customer. For Valve I don't exist. So, no, I'm not part of the problem. I'm just pointing out the big elephant in the room. Valve's hardware supply and commerce chain sucks ass. And they will keep being abused by scumbag scalpers if they don't fix it.

AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social · 37 pts · 47d (10 replies)

If you wanted one so badly, you probably got into the prenotation lottery. In the case you couldn't get one, you were put in the prenotation queue meaning that you'll be probably in for the next wave that shouldn't take too long to happen.

So who are they selling these to? These scalpers are not the sharpest tools of the shed. But buying one at that price is not much better. You must be a special kind of moron to buy that.

Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 9 pts · 47d (2 replies)

So, as I said, a special kind of moron.

Gormadt@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 47d

dustyData@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 47d (2 replies)

I know it's not the intended audience of scalpers. They aim for the people with too much money and fomo. But just remember that scalpers are the only way that the global south will ever get access to this hardware. Valve won't sell me this computer, I get zero access to the lottery, they won't ship to my country. But a random scalper on eBay will, without hesitation.

I don't like consoles, but for contrast, I could go to my nearest mall and buy any current console in a brick and mortar store for a reasonable price, just a bit over the us dollar cost.

I know there's probably a lot of price fixating cartels for a bunch of hardware stuff. Valve is fighting a losing battle in a space the have zero reputation. But at the same time, scalping, much like piracy, is a service problem. It's the result of a poor and fragile supply chain and not enough marketing and commerce channels available.

Despite all the measures to deter scalping used on the steam controller, for example, which I think are fine. The fact that 80% of the planet can't buy it directly from valve means that there will always be a scalping market. Even today the original LCD steam deck with the small ssd sells on eBay for absurd prices. It's not a healthy second hand market or a bunch of people with desperate FOMO, the original deck is old news already. It's people using the only purchase means available.

Nikelui@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 46d (1 reply)

The fact that 80% of the planet can’t buy it directly from valve means that there will always be a scalping market.

I think it's moronic to rely on scalping. This is a large market share that any competitor worth their money should be ready to jump on. It doesn't take an MBA to slap together PC components, install SteamOS or Bazzite and sell an unofficial knock-off "console". The global memory shortage being maybe the only serious obstacle.

dustyData@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 46d

Yet here we are 4 years later and 90% of the planet can only buy a Steam Deck via resellers with outrageous markup. Where are those well meaning competitors?

FireWire400@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 47d

Jiral@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 47d (3 replies)

They are a symptom, but they are a problem too. Denying that is pure laissez-faire capitalism. Scalpers create artificial supply issues to increase prices while adding zero value. That it pays off because some pay that, doesn't change any of that.

In this case of course the original price was already high and that scalper price is absurd. I'd be surprised if a lot of people are ready to pay that kind of money for it, but what do I know.

Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca · 17 pts · 47d (1 reply)

Valve should make a false initial sale then "run out" causing scalpers to stock up then all of a sudden "find" a bunch of extra stock to start selling immediately after the first batch runs out.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 47d

That would require having enough inventory to meet total demand at the set price.

IMO the best they can do is cut the scalpers out by starting the price off high themselves and lowering it as supply increases. Low supply and high demand will always lead to increased prices and trying to avoid that by keeping prices low will result in others taking advantage of that market inefficiency.

And the best we can do is just not buy the higher priced options and wait for supply to come up.

My g/f is more or less just a collector. She has binders and binders of cards she collected over 30 years before the scalpers turned the TCG into a commodity. She got so fed up with the scalpers and inflated prices that she started an LLC so she can get wholesale product. She has to compete with big box stores for product, which means she gets way less wholesale than big established stores. She probably sells 75% of the wholesale product/unopened packs and keeps 25% for herself. She charges reasonable prices. She's making like $2 an hour profit running her LLC after accounting for packaging, shipping, and purchasing new inventory. Even though she can't get as much product as she wants, she's always sold out because she isn't charging scalper prices. She gets cards/packs for herself at reasonable prices, and her small customer base doesn't have to pay scalper prices.

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 46d (1 reply)

My FLGS (which is a weirdly massive deal) has the same limits on pokemon pack purchases that everyone else has had to implement, but they recently went one further and now have a rule that children get to cut to the front of the line on restock days. Steam isn't the only one affected by the RAM shortage.

Or people like me. I used to own a PC. Life kept happening. I have a huge library. I'd like to dip back in.

I would also argue the Vision Pro was never expected to sell in volume or make a profit. It was always a test. If it established a market of content, it was a prototype and they win. If it was just a curiosity, the loss was budgeted and they never spent the money to scale up

I was always more interested in the Steam Frame. That will be my first VR-device ever, and i'm hyped for that.

The Machine has one advantage: Valve will probably keep it on the market for quite a while. When prices get a bit more "normal" again, i'm sure they will reduce the price to match the new reality. The Machine is really more like a PC for people who don't have the tech skills to setup a DIY PC, and that's what people are paying for.

Yeah I don't get why more people don't understand its just a prebuilt PC with SteamOS.

Because most prebuilts are not designed to be placed in the living room (neither dimensionwise nor acousticwise) except if you pay a shitton for a device with an uncommon form factor, and then you have to configure everything yourself. The Steam Machine combines the form factor of a small, very silent HTPC with enough performance to use it for gaming in an all-in-one package - that definitely is an attractive prospect, and it's the reason it's seen with different eyes, even tho - objectively seen - it's specs arent great at all.
