FCC to end Biden-era rule that forces ISPs to list all their fees

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/07/fcc-to-end-biden-era-rule-that-forces-isps-to-list-all-their-fees/

The Federal Communications Commission will vote to eliminate a rule that requires Internet service providers to list all of their so-called “passthrough” fees on an easily accessible broadband price label. The FCC vote could also make the price labels themselves a bit harder for consumers to find.

ISPs routinely advertise prices much lower than those actually charged to consumers on their monthly bills. One method of raising monthly bill prices above advertised rates is to tack on fees that, ISPs claim, are used to offset charges imposed by local governments.

Trump voters really voted to get scammed and a worst quality of life for everyone else lol. There is not one thing good this admin has done.

BillyClark@piefed.social · 46 pts · 47d (7 replies)

Let's see... They slowed down the war that they started in Iran. They released half of the Epstein files, just not the presumably 50% that directly implicate Trump. Trump fired Pam Bondi who he had appointed.

It's hard to think of anything good that they did that wasn't just toning down or backtracking of something bad that they had previously done.

Wataba@sh.itjust.works · 25 pts · 46d (1 reply)

Its literally just an abuse-manipulation tactic at that point.

Going overboard, then retreating back only slightly to give the false impression of being reasonable, when theyve already got what they want.

Throw it on the pile of shit that the public will never acknowledge, yes I know.

cmbabul@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 45d

One of the only true unifying principles of all the horrors that have begun to crescendo from the right for the past 10 that I have pinned down is that all sides of it are ultimately just abuse and cult dynamics, which are really just advanced abuse

Soggy@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 46d (1 reply)

Kind of. With no unified plan or support to transition.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 45d

All you need is to stop considering pennies legal tender but require banks to still accept them for changing or depositing (but not giving them out anymore).

Then stores can handle them on a case by case basis if they want to or just say "sorry we're done with pennies".

Oh yeah, also send the mint a note telling them to stop producing pennies en masse.

FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 45d

I disagree, but that's just me apparently. It's not that I particularly liked pennies, but I definitely don't like companies rounding UP to the nearest nickel. And as for the pennies costing more to make than they're worth -- so what? Basically any government provided service or product costs taxpayer money. Also, change the penny to make it more cost effective?

Anyhow, what's done is done, and we're probably all poorer because of it. I've been poor -- it sucks but life goes on.

But seriously, Trump voters need to think what that man has done to improve their lives in any way. I seriously can't think of a single thing.

Rhaedas@fedia.io · 35 pts · 47d (2 replies)

They may still not say it out loud, but their first thought will be "he hurt those other people in various ways, so worth it to me."

And if people think this is just some outlier cherry-picked by the media - nope. I've been told by an inlaw conservative that maybe I did well under Biden or under Obama, but should not have - implication being - maybe Trump 2.0 will actively harm me, because that's what I deserve. Because I have a degree, because I'm liberal, because I don't vote for asshole idiots like Donvict, etc...

And that's not even getting into the kinds of conversations I've had with conservatives both IRL and online - they definitely wish harm on those that merely disagree with them, never mind people of different religions or skin colors.

SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social · 21 pts · 47d (5 replies)

They don't need to think at all, they get fed what they need to believe. Trump made America great and safe and wonderful. Everything bad happening is somehow Bidens fault. Or immigrants did it. Even if they get upset for some days, they keep crawling back to him. It's the worst toxic relationship ever.

Many people are sad, cruel, little monsters that are happy those people are being hurt.

It's really hard to change people like that so they're better. You gotta get them to see you as in-group, and slowly re-socialize them. Lot of work. Might not even succeed. But it's also apparently a whole bunch of crimes to round up the maga-hats and lock them in an underground vault somewhere.

CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 47d (4 replies)

I like the explanation that a lot of these people are people that peaked in high school. They are angry that they stayed in the same town, not bettering themselves and never really going anywhere.

And they want others to hurt. People they perceive as liberals because they did get a degree, did expand their minds, did better themselves, did travel, did spend time in bigger and better cities, and so on.

Am I a little bitter I couldn't afford mountains of debt to get a degree while watching many of my friends go off to college? Sure.

I can see that. I also think a lot of these MAGA just benefit from the patriarchy and abuse in general,

Abusive Men Describe the Benefits of Violence - BWSS https://share.google/ZQBwC5VgCYheld0Xr

Source: Substack https://share.google/COSLwGxj3D2l6UM7i

I truly believe a lot of these MAGA are just entitled, but society brainwashed a lot of men to prioritize their own needs and having any emotional intelligence as being weak. If the only emotion these men are allowed by the patriarchy to feel is anger, then we will naturally produce a society of angry men.

In the European Union all ISPs market their connections based on maximum speed. However, the law requires them to meet at least 90% of that maximum advertised speed throughout the entire year (might slightly vary between countries), with some room for error. If they don't - easy lawsuit.

Internet is also usually extremely cheap. In my country you can get it as cheap as $8/month, with very good (>=500Mb/s download) connections rarely exceeding $25 USD monthly. Hell, you can get an 8Gb/s download cable for just a little over $40/month.

This one of those things that looks awful because the current regime decided to stop whatever flimsy fig leaf the dems had insisted on when they did pretty much the same thing.

halcyoncmdr@piefed.social · 19 pts · 47d

They were already doing it before the Biden requirements.

Source: I worked at a carrier and had to explain their bills to people daily.

The information disclosure was significantly different for consumers even though the bill didn't really change, they just had to actually breakdown the fees and surcharges, they couldn't hide it all blindly under "the government says we have to collect this".
