Journalists float astonishing theory around silence surrounding Mitch McConnell’s health

https://www.rawstory.com/mitch-mcconnell-2677159427/

McConnell was rushed to the hospital in mid-June for an undisclosed medical reason, with his spokesperson David Popp issuing a vague statement regarding the reason for the hospitalization. It wasn't until last week that media outlets learned McConnell had been discovered "unconscious" at his home and had to be administered CPR for potential “cardiac arrest.”

It remains unclear why McConnell’s staff refused to share details, but some, including independent journalist and crypto commentator Adam Cochran, have a theory.

“In Kentucky, a special election to replace a Senator will NOT be called if it’s closer than 3 months till the next election,” Cochran wrote Saturday in a social media post on X. “If McConnell’s condition is clearly unfit for office, they’d hide that to avoid being forced to submit a resignation letter until after that date.”

“So all they have to do is drag their feet until [the second Tuesday in August], then tell you that he didn’t make it,” Cochran continued. “And in turn block Massie from disrupting an otherwise safe Republican seat.”

David Morris, a journalist and author, also appeared to endorse the theory with a brutal jab at McConnell and his legacy.

“Mitch McConnell remaining technically alive for an extra three weeks because of a manipulative procedural maneuver is exactly how he would have wanted to go out,” Morris wrote in a social media post on X.

If we had a free independent press any more, all reputable news outlets would be writing about this every single day to apply pressure for proof of consciousness, so they can't drag this out until the deadline.

They would demand that his office, which released a statement saying "The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session”, prove that they weren't outright LYING.

They would go around asking his spokespeople to answer questions on camera and hound them, "is McConnell conscious?", "Will you release a photo of him with his eyes open?", "Why did his wife go to Beijing?" etc etc.

But they won't. Because we don't have a free independent press any more. A few journalists will speculate. None will keep demanding answers until they get them. Just the talking heads speculating.

Screw the national "independent press" let's all keep using people-owned independent press instead. Because the majority stock companies and owned by wealthy individuals aren't cutting it.

CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 47d (1 reply)

Because we don’t have a free independent press any more.

I'm not sure the last time that we had that. I'm Gen X, so it must have come before. The "liberal media" I was always told was so damned liberal always seemed to be hosted by people with suits and ties and working as part of some megacorp, and that mostly spouted corporate compliant things. In any case, pre-internet, things were pretty tightly gate-kept by a small set of corporations.

And Ronnie Raygun worked to make that even worse - the decades since has been a long march toward the right, at least on cable and the airwaves...

Maybe I'm too young, though if I watch something like Network, it seems the boomers didn't really have an independent press either. Chomsky is much older and seemed to make reference to a lively press in his youth.

These days, I like that Meidas Touch sends people in to ask questions. Mostly you get to see Maga Mike Johnson fleeing the scene while trying to avoid answering anything, LOL.

leadore@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 47d

I'd say the downfall first started around the time 24-hour cable news came along (starting in 1980 but it didn't happen right away) along with things like the abolishing of the fairness doctrine (1987). That and the need to fill 24 hours with "news" led to the shift to more op-ed content than news. More and more of these opinion news cable channels followed.

Then the deterioration really began to snowball with the internet and proliferation of "news" outlets tailored for specific audiences, culminating with the rise of social media (I mean, what hasn't been negatively affected by the rise of social media/oligarch-owned web 2.0) and the purchasing of all media outlets, including newspapers, by corporations and later by the rising oligarchs.

All this meant the "news" became just another type of profit-driven enterprise, with a need to compete for ratings, that shifted it from hard news to entertainment and nothing more than parroting of press releases with no independent investigation. Ultimately leading to the demise of the last bastion of independence, print journalism.

That doesn't mean there aren't still some journalists doing good investigative work, just that they are pretty much on their own now. I don't know much about Meidas Touch, but if they're actually out there asking questions and reporting, instead of just sitting around spouting opinions and outrage like most political podcasts, that's a good thing.

dhork@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 47d

The primary elections for the normal election cycle have already happened. Massie did not run for a Senate seat in those because he ran for his House seat, and lost.

This special election would be a different electio under different rules, and now that he knows he's not going to his old seat he is available to run.

So, if they delay, they leave no opportunity for that special election, and Massie has nothing to run for. It definitely seems fitting that Republicans would scheme to leave a seat vacant, rather than there be a chance of it going to a Republican that Trump doesn't like.

Can someone explain the issue here with the three months? It talks about how Massie might make a grab for the seat. What does it matter if it is a special election or regular election? What dynamic changes that makes a regular election more secure than a special election? Is it the primary process?

cannedtuna@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 47d (6 replies)

“In Kentucky, a special election to replace a Senator will NOT be called if it’s closer than 3 months till the next election,” Cochran wrote Saturday in a social media post on X. “If McConnell’s condition is clearly unfit for office, they’d hide that to avoid being forced to submit a resignation letter until after that date.”

According to Kentucky election law, independent candidates have until “the second Tuesday in August preceding the regular election” to file to run in the case of a vacancy that occurs after the state’s June filing deadline.

Massie lost the primary last month, in June, for the Kentucky house seat. He is not eligible to run in the standard election coming up as he did not file before June to run for McConnell’s position since you can’t run for two positions at once.

If McConnell is dead or incapable of holding office, a special election will be held and Massie could make a play for his position.

If he is declared dead with less than 3 months to go before the standard election they will just leave his seat vacant until that time.

So basically they are buying time until the 2nd Tuesday in August to block Massie from running.

Maybe a bayonet, to make it into the chest cavity?

And he has to be from or move to that district, so he can run in the special election. Because how do you lose after that? The machismo crowd just watched you fucksplode your enemy's corpse.

Why does the dude just not retire? Or is someone keeping him alive to use him?

cannedtuna@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 47d (1 reply)

Well, now he’s unconscious and brain dead according to Loomer and has been the past 3 weeks. His party is allegedly keeping him on life support to obstruct an emergency vote to replace him as they would loose the majority.

He didn’t previously retire because he’s always been a piece of shit who loved obstruction and slowing everything to a crawl. In addition to his looks, this is why people frequently refer to him as a turtle.

Can he still contribute to the majority while incapacitated?

Arancello@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 47d

Amazing the extent to which republicans will go to deny their constituents representation.

Old! He's old!

This theory is off base.

The law is for when the vacancy occurs, not when it is disclosed.

If he's dead before the 2nd Tuesday in August, it doesn't matter if they wait longer to announce that.

Basically they'll need to prove he was able to do senator stuff the days leading up to their disclosure date in order to meet the no election deadline.

cannedtuna@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 47d (5 replies)

Tell them that. Pretty sure they’re not above lying and covering it up.

foggy@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 47d (4 replies)

You can't cover up a time of death, especially if you need to prove the office is not vacant.

cannedtuna@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 47d (2 replies)

But you can keep the guy on life support and refuse to let anyone see him saying while he is being apprised of what’s going on, he’s too weak to take on visitors right now, so just trust us bro.

foggy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 46d (1 reply)

Then he has vacated the office and there would be an election held.

cannedtuna@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 46d

🤷‍♂️ again tell them not me because that’s what’s happening.

G4Z@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 46d

They covered up a murder in a maximum security prison, pretty sure they can cover this up as well. Even if the cover up fails, as in the case of the murder, it won't matter anyway.

What's the August 2nd date about? Do we check yearly whether a senator is dead or something?

bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 47d (4 replies)

I'm pretty sure it's Aug 5, but it's 90 days before the midterm election. Kentucky has a law where if a Senator vacates office before that, the Governor (currently a Democrat) appoints a replacement to finish out their term. The conspiracy theory is saying that they're hiding the fact that he's unfit to serve in order to keep their slim majority in the House until at least January.

JayDee@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 47d (2 replies)

Hypothetically if McConnel did die and they were able to keep it under wraps till, say August 15th - would a snap election occur at that point or would it be viewed that the deadline was missed?

I'm also curious if this has ever occurred before to serve as precedence for now. 302 senators have died in office in the past, so it's a lot to try and look into I think.

RaoulDook@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 47d

"302 senators have died in office in the past" ... really shows how the Senate has too many old bastards staying in office too long. They should be retired while they fade away into death, instead of making important decisions for the country that they will never have to worry about the consequences of.

bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 46d

If recent history is to serve as an example, it would likely be tied up in the courts until it no longer mattered.

Cort@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 47d

If I understand it correctly, the law (passed just before Bashir was inaugurated) actually says there should be a special election called by the governor. However the state's constitution says the governor picks the replacement
