A small recompense for decades of jokes at Mexico's expense, eh?

Lmao. I was at a grocery store the other day and buying some grapes. Some old 70+ year old lady said I shouldn't buy Mexican produce because they use poop for fertilizer. I laughed looked her in the face and asked her what she thought we used for fertilizer. She didn't like that.

70+-year-old ladies. It works so well because they're full of shit.

Just published today in The Guardian:

The Trump administration has killed proposed regulations for sewage sludge contaminated with Pfas and spread on farmland as fertilizer, a practice that has sickened farmers, destroyed their livelihoods, killed livestock, polluted water supplies, and poisoned meat and food products sold to the public.

Fertilizer just increased 50% in price. Enjoy, hicks.

TriplePlaid@wetshav.ing · 11 pts · 32d (1 reply)

Allowing continued spreading of PFAS contaminated sludge is beyond horrible because those chemicals will stay there permanently. Around 1/3 or so of USA cropland is already polluted from spreading of sludges. There is nothing in nature that can break PFAS down, so all that polluted land will have to literally be removed and stored similar to hazardous nuclear waste.

When we finally realize the damage and start work to repair it, it will be the largest remediation project in human history.

ati@piefed.social · 5 pts · 32d

I think nature will evolve/select some sort of bacteria that will digest PFAs and plastics, making it a problem that will solve itself. It'll only take a few hundred thousand years I reckon.

quick_snail@feddit.nl · 8 pts · 32d (4 replies)

There's a way to safely use poop for fertilizer. You have to compost it to kill pathogens first.

Neither counties do this, and that's one reason people get e-coli, parasites, and other diseases

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 31d (3 replies)

The Romans did not understand this. Archeology digs in Roman latrines concluded most Romans carried parasites.

quick_snail@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 31d (2 replies)

Were those latrines lined? Did they place them sufficiently far from rivers and ground water?

I don't think they understood much about disease vectors and germ theory, in general.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 31d (1 reply)

Pete Hegseth says germ theory is fake.

The concept of bacteria didn't appear until almost 800 years later. Romans used poop to fertilize fields, but did not treat it.

And the guy who suggested germs exist (cadaver particles) was locked up in an insane institution, where he died.

According to the official figures, just released, out of the 6.5 million visitors, only 1.2 million were international visitors.

US food is objectively shit, the poor quality and ingredients that are banned almost everywhere else being only some of many reaasons.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 4 pts · 32d (13 replies)

I find it funny when people say this, as the US is in the top 5 countries with the safest food worldwide.

Tabula_stercore@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 32d

Hard doubt that the usa would be in front of the 27 EU countries sharing a single food standard.

CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml · 11 pts · 32d (4 replies)

Chlorinated chicken and hormone loaded beef are banned here in the UK and also the EU, I believe.

We don't chlorinate our chicken because we have standards of cleanliness that don't necessitate it.

You may feel it's safe, but most would not agree. A trade deal with the US that degrades our standards would make me feel nauseous.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 31d (2 replies)

99% of US chicken is no longer chlorinated.

CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml · -1 pts · 31d (1 reply)

It's still washed with hydrogen peroxide. Use of chemicals in EU/UK is prohibited.

zalgotext@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 31d

"chlorinated chicken" is chicken that has been rinsed with what's essentially tap water.

Nowadays a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar is used in appropriately diluted solutions instead of the chlorine/water rinse because of this fear mongering you're displaying. The solution used is appropriately diluted, vinegar is edible, and hydrogen peroxide quickly breaks down into water and oxygen, so I don't know what you're scared of there.

All of these techniques result in about an order of magnitude less foodborne pathogens, when compared to chicken with no treatment.

Stop being afraid of "chemicals". I promise you the "use of chemicals" is not prohibited in the EU/UK, otherwise you'd have Europeans keeling over left and right from various foodborne illnesses.

BigDiction@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 31d

We do have chicken labeled as ā€œair chilledā€ that is not treated, but you’re typically paying 50-100% more for that per pound.

Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 32d (4 replies)

zalgotext@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 31d (3 replies)

I'm guessing the Global Food Security Index, which in 2019, had the US ranked 3rd. That's based on a composite score that takes food availability, nutrition, quality, and safety into account.

As of 2022, the index has been updated and the US's composite score puts it at 13th.

Edit: sauce

I'm all about mocking the American Century of Humiliation brought on by cuts to their food safety system, but in this case isn't there evidence that the contaminated lettuce was originally sourced from Mexico? I'm not super big on trusting any evidence from the MAGA admin but AFAIK that's all we've got.

GalacticRobot@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 32d (2 replies)

Correct, so far it seems the lettuce is from Mexico, and it's not the first time this has happened (outbreaks during the spring and summer are pretty common, regardless of administration).

So funny meme I guess, but is is pretty shitty when you think about it.

Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 32d

In this case It's less about the source and more about the cuts to FDA/CDC to trace and mitigate. Like it was US-based lettuce that was the problem then obviously there's be an additional layer of accountability.

Even without the current rash of lettuce etc. Mexicans can get a form of "Montezuma's revenge" (Alamo revenge?) from eating in America, because their guts aren't used to the local bacteria. This can happen any time you travel internationally - especially if you eat any kind of street food.

quick_snail@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 32d (2 replies)

No. No no no.

To compare this to bacteria is a mistake.

This is a parasite that only spreads from feces. If you get this parasite, it's because you're literally eating shit. That's nothing like airborne bacteria. Having shit in your food is a catastrophic and easily avoidable thing.
