Ergo, the most historically accurate telling of the odyssey would be the oldest one that could be found and the one that most closely matches the original telling. It doesn't matter that it's a fictional story.

Sorta kinda. There might have been a poet we know as Homer, but the consensus is he did not "write" the trojan war poems (we only have two out of the eight - illiad and Odyssey). People have been arguing about this before any of us were born
To be fair, I think he's talking about being accurate to the historical period in which the story is set. That period was very real, even if the events of the story - namely the supernatural ones - were not.
That being said, I have a really hard time understanding why some people care so much. It's just a movie, and it really doesn't seem worth getting upset about. Just don't watch it if it bothers you that much.
They want to see people as being like they see themselves in their head, rather than with all the ugliness we bring with us. It probably feels optimistic, but it's actually just naivete.
If Nolan were trying to be accurate to the historical period, there wouldn't be a black woman in the cast, or any actors who aren't from that part of the Mediterranean, basically, which includes English actors, East Asian actors, etc. Obviously, Nolan isn't going for historical accuracy, which, in my opinion, is a perfectly valid decision. Nearly all period films made in Hollywood today don't only use actors who are from the relevant geographic area. There's a coherent, objective, and interesting interpretation of "historically accurate" that I would like to see, that being what the Greeks at the time that the poem was written imagined the poem to be describing.
(But maybe there would be too much moral dissonance for that to be a fun movie.)

To be fair, I think he's talking about being accurate to the historical period in which the story is set. That period was very real, even if the events of the story - namely the supernatural ones - were not.
That being said, I have a really hard time understanding why some people care so much. It's just a movie, and it really doesn't seem worth getting upset about. Just don't watch it if it bothers you that much.

If Nolan were trying to be accurate to the historical period, there wouldn't be a black woman in the cast, or any actors who aren't from that part of the Mediterranean, basically, which includes English actors, East Asian actors, etc. Obviously, Nolan isn't going for historical accuracy, which, in my opinion, is a perfectly valid decision. Nearly all period films made in Hollywood today don't only use actors who are from the relevant geographic area. That's why, as I already said, I don't understand why people are getting so upset about it.
