It is like saying that you are going to remake Die Hard but make it more historically accurate.

That building isn't even in L.A.!

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · 30 pts · 30d (2 replies)

I’d watch a historically accurate Die Hard.

BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk · 32 pts · 30d (1 reply)

errer@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 30d

It’s pretty hard to watch

takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 30d

That building isn't even in L.A.!

Akshtually, that depends how you look at it. Yes, it isn't in the downtown LA, but it is located in Century City that technically is in Los Angeles (west part of it, on the border with Beverly Hills)

It was called Fox Plaza now it is called 2121 Avenue of the Stars

arctanthrope@lemmy.world · 81 pts · 30d (12 replies)

even at the time it was first told it was a fantasy story about a mythologized distant past. complaining that the Odyssey doesn't have costumes accurate to the time of Homer is like complaining that Lord of the Rings doesn't have Aragorn running around in a WW2-era English army uniform

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 41 pts · 30d (6 replies)

Yeah.... This isn't about costumes at all. It's about casting a woman of color as Helen of Troy.

drmoose@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 30d (2 replies)

I generally don't like virtue signaling but I just watched Odyssey the casting was on point for the entire movie. Amazing performance all around and hated Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong'o did amazing jobs - these people are 100% just racists and bigots.

I'm a Greek mythology nerd too and this is by far my favorite Hollywood take in this niche!

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 29d (1 reply)

I generally don't like virtue signaling

So normally, you'd be against this because casting a black person in a historically white role is "virtue signaling"?

Have you ever considered that the casting director chooses who they think is best for the job?

You're honestly telling on yourself when you call shit "virtue signaling." You're tacitly admitting that you could never believe that a person might be the best for the job because of their race or gender.

If it's used regarding something not related to race, you're admitting to everyone that you lack basic empathy, and therefore refuse to accept that others might have that empathy. "They must be virtue signaling, because nobody actually wants to help the homeless."

This "everything is virtue signaling" bullshit is for the birds. It's a thought terminating cliche that literally makes people racist and sociopathic

Stop. Do better.

drmoose@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 29d

So normally, you'd be against this because casting a black person in a historically white role is "virtue signaling"?

No, just other kinds of virtue signaling. I think re-interperting is perfectly fine as long as the context isnt something punching down like black face. I misspoke I guess but there are virtue signaling that is more akin to obvious rage bait but odyssey is clearly not it.

Yeah it's in Anatolia, the Trojans would probably look like modern Turks

Saapas@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 30d (4 replies)

It's set during Greek Bronze Age/Mycenaean civilization. I guess the historical accuracy means portraying that period accurately within the frame of the fantasy.

arctanthrope@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 30d (1 reply)

the point is that even the original ancient Greek audience would not have had, nor been expected by the author to have, an accurate conception of what it was like to live several hundred years before their own time. historical accuracy has never been a necessary, or even intended, aspect of the work

Saapas@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 30d

I mean he probably assumed and intended them to be thought of as looking more like his time than the setting. So that could be another point of "historical authenticity", setting it to time period of Homer.

Some people just enjoy that sort of "accuracy" even in this type of work. It can be neat

andros_rex@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 30d (1 reply)

Which there are valid complaints about costuming in that context, but that’s not really what the crowd whining about “historical accuracy” gives a shit about.

Like, if it were SCA nerds nitpicking dyes and fabric types, or armor construction - sure, that’s lots of fun. As someone with an interest in textile history I do get annoyed by the fact that the last decade of filmmaking seems to have deprioritized making pretty costumes and everything looks so cheap nowadays.

But that’s not what right wing chuds are complaining about. They don’t actually give two shits about historical accuracy (consider how popular 300 is with that crowd…) Odysseus could have a fucking lightsaber and they wouldn’t care as long as everyone was white.

He's been broken since that diver rescued those kids rather than wait for Elon to build a cave diving submarine, and Musk's grown-up rational response was to call him a paedophile.

jj4211@lemmy.world · 63 pts · 30d (5 replies)

According to some that knew him, he's been broken long before that. Notably his first wife basically described exactly the man we are seeing long before that incident, but no one really took that in at the time. Even before they split up, saw a video about him taking delivery of one of his first rich person cars and on the video she already clearly thought this was some stupid bullshit.

Before folks were able to curate his public image and moderate his "creative input". He was seen as a crucial brand to maintain and powerful folks were eager to maintain the "real life Tony Stark" concept. Those are the guardrails that have worn out.

Duamerthrax@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 30d (1 reply)

I call the rescue diver incident his public Mask Off moment. Everything before that could be considered harmless shitposts or trolling other rich people.

starik@lemmy.today · 16 pts · 30d

That’s when I realized something was seriously wrong with him, and he wasn’t just an autistic, eccentric genius.

TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today · 13 pts · 30d (1 reply)

Yeah, he's always been this person. Pretty much everyone who's ever worked with him has always described him as a contrarian twat. I think his public image started to shift soon after firing his longtime secretary/mommy Mary Beth Brown, who used to control all his public engagement.

JcbAzPx@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 30d

He's also always been self aggrandizing. He occasionally brags about how he was one of the best Quake players in the world. Turns out he just had access to a corporate T1 line which gave him a major advantage in online tournaments. When someone else with similar access soundly trounced him, he accused that person of cheating for doing exactly what he himself was doing.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 29d

Yeah I remember reading her article about him before he was widely disliked and coming to the conclusion he was a scumbag, but even then I didn't expect him to get as bad as he did

On the other hand he is so insecure and sad that not even the global billionaire pedophile ring wants him with.

jj4211@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 30d

It's amazing how it is never enough for him. He gets declared richest man in the world. But no, that's not good enough, I'm his mind by all rights he really should be worth more than everyone else in the world put together. Technically he was saying this about SpaceX when he was whining after no longer being a trillionaire, but you know it was triggered by his personal "downgrade" back to "mere billionaire" rather than some grand view of SpaceX unrelated to his personal ego.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 30d (2 replies)

erowid.org was a lifesaver for me back in my experimenting days.

Ketamine is a dissociative, so if you take enough to "k-hole," you aren't "feeling like you're detained" anywhere because you aren't feeling anything about your surroundings. It's 100% internal (and a wild fucking ride hahah). I prefer it to psychedelics because for me it lacked the anxiety and confusing "weirdness" that almost always comes along with those.

It is also very safe in terms of acute doses. Which is why we literally use it to sedate infants. It's only bad on your body (bladder) when you use it habitually.

If Nolan were trying to be accurate to the historical period, there wouldn't be a black woman in the cast, or any actors who aren't from that part of the Mediterranean, basically, which includes English actors, East Asian actors, etc. Obviously, Nolan isn't going for historical accuracy, which, in my opinion, is a perfectly valid decision. Nearly all period films made in Hollywood today don't only use actors who are from the relevant geographic area. What debate are we having exactly? My expressed position is that Elon Musk will not have sex with you, no matter how much time you spend glazing him online. Do you have a counter to that position? Are we going to accomplish some Hegelian dialectic shit and come to a middle position? Perhaps Musk will allow you to suck his cock, since you are so eager for it.
