Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville called for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to be arrested and sent to the infamous American torture prison at Guantanamo Bay. Mamdani’s crime? Calling indicted alleged war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu an “architect of genocide,” responsible for a series of atrocities in the ongoing war on Gaza.
“Sooner or later,” Mamdani will “do something more stupid than what he’s done, where we will finally say enough is enough, go put the handcuffs on him … and send him to Gitmo,” Tuberville, a Republican, said, calling Mamdani a “thug.”

It's not just socialism, it's kindness and the exemplification of a civil servant actually seeking to serve the will of the people.
In many ways, we're simply talking about the concept of a true republic here.
This is a rare vision of the America the founding fathers envisioned.

Can you name a socialist country that is doing well?
hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip · 20 pts · 56d
What kind of socialism are you referring to? That’s a pretty wide net you’re casting.
Social democracy (which is technically still capitalism)? Democratic socialism with decentralized authority? Anarchism? Union socialism?
Or are you just looking at examples of Stalinism, Maoism and Marxist-Leninist socialism? Libertarian socialism?
Do you realize the price of change is human life with any society? Capitalism has cost countless lives and the death toll is increasing.

Not socialist but social democracies.
Socialism is when WORKERS OWN THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION.
These two countries are both free market privately owned economies. They both have extream(for the USA) regulations when it comes to how private enterprise can operate but at the end of the day they are both 100% capitalists.

arrow74@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 56d

raze2012@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 56d
They really will do or say anything but their job, huh?
If we're being real, Mamdami hasn't even gotten his big plans rolling yet. He passed an easy tax (for people owning houses that don't even live in NYC) and fixed some potholes. His biggest win was bartering with the state government to get more support (instead of the dreaded "tax the rich"). The rest was normal stuff with good PR aimed at the 21st century. That's it.
But these relics spent decades minmaxing for cable news and can't look human on social media at all. They are used to saying words then doing nothing. The bar is that low and they are scared at a dude bending his knees (he hasn't even jumped yet).
At least they are finally breaking their fake decorum and sayong the quiet parts out loud. Makes it so much easier to tear down in the long term.

Aqarius@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 56d
It's also kinda wrong for fascism, in that in a lot of ways, fascism in practice is a sort of merger of the state and big business.
raze2012@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 56d
Fascism is heavily contradictory. Maybe Joe' shop is watched carefully for making gay cakes, but WalMart will do whatever they want as long as they donate a ballroom every few years
lavander@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 55d
Historical fascism wasn’t like that: big companies were watched more closely. Each director board of a large company needed to have at least one representative of the fascist party.
Of course, the question is what you do with that power. And there probably fascism fails the “evil test”
But in principle I think that business (especially big business) should serve the common interest (represented by the state) and not the other way around
raze2012@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 55d
Yeah, I know what you mean. Sadly, our fascism is a really, really stupid form based around a teenager's fantasy of a dictatorship. Trump doesn't care about the potential of large private corporations usurping the throne so he let's then run free as long as they kiss the ring.
If this managed to extend to decades instead of years (and somehow Trump lived that long), it'd be such a predictable ending for him.
DupaCycki@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 56d
A senator openly calls for arresting a mayor, without naming any crimes, since none were committed, and sending him to the illegal prison where only innocent people are sent and tortured for no reason other than guards' enjoyment.
People like him belong in high security prisons, ideally far away from society. Assuming they won't receive capital punishment.

benjirenji@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 55d
You don't need crimes or due process if you send them to an illegal prison. That's the whole point of an illegal prison.
With shit like this "protecting democracy" or "preserve our institutions" sounds so fucking hollow. "Protect our way of life" becomes a fascist dog whistle than just an actual desire for security.
Napster153@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 56d

raze2012@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 56d
The issue is the low information voter isn't hearing the reasonable thing at all. The media will spin Mamdami's point ("mamdami hates jews!"), then top it off with this quote. So Tubeville sounds "strong" and "defending America". They won't ever mention Netanyahu at all, nor the genocide.
