"I'll write a whiny multipage diatribe to rage quit and insert a script to DDOS the instance that hurt my feelings. That's the behaviour of a well adjusted adult that's doing the right thing."
Definitely the actions of a person who should be unquestioningly trusted to be the sole arbiter of determining what is fine and dandy and what goes too far on Lemmy. Totally not indicative of every legitimate concern that every single person opposing this brought up being accurate, surely not!
ugh you're giving me flashbacks of getting autobanned by a bot on one of the main leftist subreddits because I'd once posted in one of the right-wing subs (calling someone out on nazi bullshit).
It's infinitely frustrating to see a community of people who mostly just want a socialized safety net, money out of politics, less inequality and less genocide, get run by exactly the sort of people who seem like they'd be perfectly happy implementing gulags and Stasi on the first day of the revolution.
The disturbing thing is that a LOT of people are like this. The older I get and the more I see of humanity the more it becomes clear most don't mentally age past early teens and many who have big parts of them that don't age past toddler behaviour.
As a lemming, this whole drama is categorical censorial bullshit, but also peak comedy because the fuckwad got caught and publicly called on the carpet
As a software engineer, this is stupid implementation, because you can trivially make this a configurable blocklist of strings and regex. It never needed to even be an argument. Which of course means that it was never about the implementation.
As an open source enthusiast, take the software engineer response, but add: and he’s intentionally pushing his (visibly fucked up and warped) worldview and values onto users, and he tried to obfuscate it to be sneaky. That falls in the realm of malware imo - as in, intentionally mutating the functionality of a project with a specific intent of impact on users, and then attempting to hide the evidence. And then he got called out on it, and got super butthurt, and rage quit the whole goddamn platform.
He even tried to wash it off with "but there is a setting to disable it, just navigate 32 sub menus and click toxic mode" and never addressed the fact that his software would hide the shit behind a "technicall issue" excuse
Dude clearly designed it to be included in his releases in a difficult to detect fashion. That’s “malicious developer” behavior.
In the context of OSS, you design to do , and you set things up to allow users and implementers to customize it as they see fit and necessary. Intentionally hiding opt-out mechanism - let alone shipping with shit you want or need to opt out of is very much a big tech bullshit tactic, and OSS devs who do that are objectively caustic OSS devs. Dude tried to foist his views and sensibilities onto everyone who used his shit in a very, very sneaky fashion
It’s correct and appropriate that he got blackballed from the community.
See this kinda thing is exactly why I'm still here. Some guy tried to use his software's popularity to manipulate and censor Lemmy, and it had the exact opposite effect in the end. His software got immediately forked, most instances(that I know of) stopped using/supporting it and the whole thing is getting memed to death so now the entire usernase knows about it and can specifically avoid this guy and all the software he maintains.
When this kind of thing happens on a platform like reddit or some other closed system, we can often suspect and sometimes experimentally prove that some kind of censorship or manipulation is happening, but it is way more difficult to detect and there's little the users can do about it.
Not here.
Here the users have the power, the knowledge, and the motivation to not only find problems like this, but to take collective action against them. You all have just proved it, once again.
It was especially stupid when everyone already was scrutinizing his code. Like users found his secret block list that was better hidden than this, and didn't think anyone would find the ddos code? What a freakin' moron.
I'm watching two users that have been defending him while skirting around the actual problems. Right now, I'm not fully sure if they are alts of his. They aren't active at the same time, as in one stopped commenting a few hours ago and then the other started commenting, which I find suspicious.
They've been called out as possible alts in this post and another tesseract post in this community. Neither have responded to the accusations though, which I also find suspicious lol
And he's still made recent comments on his Kirk account
If this person is using alts and still commenting then they really, really need to touch grass. Thats gona be a fairly unhealthy psychological behaviour.
Patrick if you read this please actually give yourself 48 hours offline. Disconnect and go have a cuppa with a friend or family member (or both). You don't need to talk to then about any of this, the rest of the world doesn't know or care anyway. :)
Don't worry about this cesspit, we'll all be here being our lovely toxic selves when you come back.
oy vey-- I can be a real pill. but at least I can admit when I'm wrong. A lady/gentleman apologizes and exits stage left. One doesn't simply ragequit with a side of DDoS!
in all my years of slashdotting, Stumbling, Farking, Digging, redditry, and Lemming, I've never known anyone to go down this hard nor this bitter. WHAT A CUNT!
And to top it all off, startrek.website is going to defederate from db0 for TOTALLY REAL REASONS that aren't just being a salty little bitch. They just can't show you proof, cuz it's doxxing.
There's not much in the way of sane reasons to go from inactive to suddenly having an admin call out censorship being the 'last straw' causing the defed and refusing to show proof because "doxxing".
I envy tesseract dev. Really. I have barely any determination and feeling of self worth; he had enough to cosplay head of house unmourned. Sadly for him, Lemmy knew how to kill a "god".
i've personally slain bigger than patrick. [like, i'm sure we don't want to get a thread of "what's the biggest thing you've ever destroyed, please tell the story" because it would be utterly toxic and in the real way, not the patrick way} i'm sure most of us here have. "god"? please, let's not feed his nor any other dev's ego.
It was reference to game called "Morrowind" where main antagonist utters the phrase "I am a god. How can you kill a god?". Felt it fit with how self-aggradazing was our dear dev.
Took a chance with that reference, lemmy being full of nerds and all that xD
ah shit. i tried arena and it was not for me, daggerfall was not for me, skipped morrowind, loved oblivion and skyrim, but when i went back for morrowind games had developed too much and i didn't finish it because of all the jank. loved what little of the story i got though. i got as far as custom spells.
Understandable. I am quite tolerant for old game mechanics myself, and actually enjoyed both Arena and Daggerfall. Played Morrowind, and had a disk format just before facing the big bad...
And forgot to make backup of this one game.
I could not make myself go through swinging sword at larva with missing_woosh.ogg in the background again to start anew xD
Everyone’s wrong sometimes that’s just the stale croutons in this human ceasar salad they call “life”. It takes a special kind of grit to be such a massive dog-rocket when your wrong tho
The modern Mega-Toddler. All the behaviors of your average toddler, but in the body of a adult. It used to be an oddity, someone much maligned in the papers and film. Now it's entire movements and even nations, with the prototype oddity suddenly running things.
It's been a consistent play of Trump since even his campaign in 2015-2016. He says something stupid or does something stupid. His defenders say he didn't mean it like that and try to offer nuance or context, and then Trump clarifies that no, the plain meaning of what he said was exactly what he intended.
But yeah, after Hokit disparaged Michelle Obama at White House UFC fight, I had a moment of clarity that the new masculine flex is to discharge your strength to do something awful, something cruel or tasteless or obviously amoral, to demonstrate either that you are beyond the reach of consequences or because you don't care about the consequences. Another recent example is when Trump interfered with the World Cup and cancelled the red card and one-game penalty of Folarin Balogun.
I doubt that it's just manosphere-types emulating Donald Trump, but because this is a thing he specifically does time and again, it's recognizable when other people do it.
Is lemmy turning into reddit or something? I just see bits and pieces of this drama, don't really care enough to deep dive in it.. but found out I'm on the "list".
no, someone tried to turn it into Reddit using their frontend to try and act like an admin on instances they're not an admin on, acting like an entitled reddit powermod/admin doling out shadowbans; and the fediverse collectively told him to fuck himself.
Most people, I'd think, would consider thousands of other people yelling all at once telling you you've done a tremendously dumb thing, to be a fine moment for self-reflection. AdmiralPatrick is not one of those people.
As I gain a better understanding of how federated social media works, I just find it even more confusing. This dude appointed himself batman of lemmy, but he's just a single dev of a single frontend. Don't most instances have multiple frontends? Even if a secret block list was the key to getting lemmy to finally go mainstream (it's not), implementing it at a frontend level is simultaneously both way too wide and way too small of a net. If tesseract was the only way anyone could access lemmy, maybe a secret block list could actually change the winds, but it's such a small slice of the fediverse. It's like if batman was only beating up jaywalkers and was like "You're welcome, Gotham. The city is saved."
What was the point of any of it? Someone was inevitably going to discover it was happening. There were so many people on the block list. Was he just going to personally defend against the ranks of people he found annoying forever? Keep adding more and more regex as the list grows to multiple thousands of users? They're still on the platform, dude. It's just one filter on one frontend. What the hell are you trying to accomplish?
This dude appointed himself batman of lemmy, but he's just a single dev of a single frontend. Don't most instances have multiple frontends? Even if a secret block list was the key to getting lemmy to finally go mainstream (it's not), implementing it at a frontend level is simultaneously both way too wide and way too small of a net.
You nailed it! The impact was minimal. Its so many stupid hoops to get to his frontend. The root issue was keeping it a secret. And that's why everyone was clowning on him, with many users (myself included) wishing we were on that list.
Apparently that broke Admiral cucktits because his secret list of gay lefties didn't make him as cool as Batman. It made him like... Ketchup man or some 4th rate villain with a stupid gimmick, who thinks he's "protecting" Gotham by rubbing ketchup on all the street corners to stop robbers or some dumb shit.
Frankly, my own block list is huge. Mostly keywords, very few users. I would recommend it to everyone. Any social media is unbearable without blocking shit out. Everyone should personalise blocklists to their tastes.
But you can't make this decision for people. This is why I also don't like that some instances defederate a lot of other instances they don't like (and no one tells newbies). There's a niche for pre-populated block lists that are available and curated and transparent (like for ad-blockers).
The bots agree with me so it must be everyone else that is wrong. /s
I forget where but remember hearing a story once. If I hosted a banger of a party and everyone passes out at my house. I wake up the next morning to see a giant shit log in the kitchen sink and Joe says Jerry did it. I might be willing to hear Jerry out. But if I got 10 people say yeah Jerry is the one who took a shit in your sink. Well I'm going to be making Jerry clean my fucking sink.
The most dumbfounding thing to me is that the list isn't even base64 encoded. Its just sitting in the repo plain-text. I can't decided if its laziness, a lack of data integrity standards, lack of imagination, or if he wanted all this drama one day.
Just here to point out that GodlessCommie, the sole active mod of Late Stage Capitalism is one of these losers, making the sub his own personal crybaby safe space.
I've got a user @XLE@piefed.social doing the same thing in one of the tesseract threads, defending the tesseract dev, trying to say I'm calling for doxxing...by saying we should expose the actions of bigots like the Tesseract dev. Take a look for yourselves, only a conservative could be so low iq and determined, my god.
I tried to ask, imo in a pretty friendly engaging tone, what they meant with those accusations, and now apparently im under suspicion as well for asking question and disagreeing
id rather not jump into any conclusions about them as a person, but its a damn weird aand p cringy energy
That's funny, because when I dared to question your buddy who made something easy to interpret as doxxing incitement against all "friends" of AdmiralPatrick...
...he started spreading my name around - including making two posts encouraging his mob to report me, and several comments in random other posts including the one you're on.
If your idea of "letting it go" is you admitting you have blatant double standards, and acknowledge exactly how your "friend"'s behavior appeared as a call for mass targeted harassment, then I accept your willingness to "let it go."
The frog pairs nicely with the use of "low IQ" and "cancer" comments. But at least you're having fun giving ammunition to anybody who wants to prove Lemmy communities harbor harassers while pretending they don't see any.
Edit: you suck at hiding your use of alt accounts.
mmh delicious irony. Whos the one harassing who again? you, that tries to revive a dead disagreement, or me, literally just minding my business the last two days, interacting with you exactly zero times since?
in regards to your edit, i can explain that one as well. i dm'ed the guy because youve clearly got a grudge going. thought it only fair he got a heads up.
im assuming he then got curious and looked at my comment history 🤷♂️

... Because that screenshot was of a post two days ago, not today. But he's completely right about who's doing the sketchy voting today.
Did you know, that if you click on a user link, it takes you to their profile, which on the voyager app shows that users newest comment at the top?
Well know you do
the more you know
you can just block me if you dont want to engage ✌️
stalking... fucking lmao dude. Looking at ANOTHER users commrnt history is stalking, and merely saying the word 'expose' is doxxing
👶🧠
edit: oh i see how it is. You can harass users all day long but as soon as someone actually backs you into a corner regarding your antisocial behaviour, oop suddenly the coward disappears and if i press for answers, im stalking and harrassing.
Log of the internet. Youre obviously not equipped for it. Find a new hobby.
you know, I said the exact same thing after several weeks of beanposting the first time, years ago, now I merely accept them as part of lemmy history; I suspect the same will happen here where "hey remember that guy who tried to play admin on other instances and got laughed out of the cool kids club?" will become some sort of in-joke
If your free software is borderline malware (which it is because it's intentionally depriving users access to certain information with a deliberate attempt hide that fact from the users) I think people have a right to be harsh.
If it is malware then harshness is justified, but I'd be willing to debate over the strict definition of malware and whether it technically applies here.
But I don't think most of the harshness we've seen is actually borne of that kind of outrage. Even the OP of this meme says they are not upset and are having a wonderful time.
I never said it's strictly malware, I said borderline malware. It can't be strictly malware because most definitions of malware focus on the malware taking (some or full) control of the system or extracting valuable information, things that generally pose as a direct threat of damage to the end user or system.
But restricting user access to information without the user knowing information is being restricted and taking deliberate steps to hide this is being done in the first place is all malicious behavior. If you asked from a layman if this should be considered malware behavior or not most people would consider this malware behavior, hence borderline malware.
And I don't see how it not being "strictly malware" would change anything. People are outraged by what it is doing and how it is doing it, not by whether it fits the strict definition of malware.
Don't put words in my mouth. I said that I wasn't upset, after you made a comment implying I was and that I should seek out a refund -- I don't use the Tesseract frontend, and never have. That doesn't mean I "don't actually care" about someone trying to play Reddit admin and sneakily impose their will onto the rest of the fediverse.
If you want to make a stupid argument, that's fine; but make it on your own, don't rope me into it.
Well, today you learned that I can care about something stupid someone else did, and be entertained by how poorly they handled it, all at the same time. I'm glad I could help clarify things for you.
See, to me, you sound like an alt of AdmiralPatrick, or possibly one of his few remaining friends, and seem to be here exclusively to make passive aggressive comments at his detractors and/or run defense for him. I wonder why that would be...

My favorite reply from him when I called him out in a different thread: "why can't you just let people use their own computers how they choose"
I'm guessing he has never heard the wisdom of not throwing stones in a glass house. The cognitive dissonance is hilarious, though.

Yes, he does. And he is very flexible in his own interpretation of the rules. He's the kind of power-tripper I hoped leaving behind on reddit.

It was reference to game called "Morrowind" where main antagonist utters the phrase "I am a god. How can you kill a god?". Felt it fit with how self-aggradazing was our dear dev.

I just see bits and pieces of this drama, don't really care enough to deep dive in it.. but found out I'm on the "list".
volore@scribe.disroot.org · 59 pts · 21d
no, someone tried to turn it into Reddit using their frontend to try and act like an admin on instances they're not an admin on, acting like an entitled reddit powermod/admin doling out shadowbans; and the fediverse collectively told him to fuck himself.
Most people, I'd think, would consider thousands of other people yelling all at once telling you you've done a tremendously dumb thing, to be a fine moment for self-reflection. AdmiralPatrick is not one of those people.
raspirate@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 20d
VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 10 pts · 19d

Malyca@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 21d

I just think the reaction from fediverse users has been too harsh when you consider that Tesseract was free and open source software.
Goodeye8@piefed.social · 26 pts · 21d
If your free software is borderline malware (which it is because it's intentionally depriving users access to certain information with a deliberate attempt hide that fact from the users) I think people have a right to be harsh.
charonn0@startrek.website · -21 pts · 21d
If it is malware then harshness is justified, but I'd be willing to debate over the strict definition of malware and whether it technically applies here.
But I don't think most of the harshness we've seen is actually borne of that kind of outrage. Even the OP of this meme says they are not upset and are having a wonderful time.
Goodeye8@piefed.social · 14 pts · 21d
